Moving Target – Gaston Ramirez

Last week, Middlesbrough finally confirmed the transfer of midfielder Gaston Ramirez on a free transfer after being released by Southampton. The 25-year-old has signed a three-year contract at the Riverside, where he spent a successful loan spell last season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, ‘Boro manager Aitor Karanka expressed his delight at securing the Uruguayan on a permanent basis:

“It’s good to have him with us again. He was a key player last season and we both knew we wanted to work together again. It’s taken time, but it’s good to have him here. It’s good for the team, for the club, and for him. So we’re all pleased.”

The History

Starting off his youth career at Penarol in Uruguay, Ramirez made his professional debut for the club in 2009 at the age of 18. He went on to make 42 league appearances, scoring eight goals, before securing a move to Italian side Bologna in August 2010 for a fee of € 2.5 million.

Ramirez enjoyed a reasonably successful first campaign in Italy, bagging four goals and two assists in 25 league matches, before really finding his feet during the 2011/12 campaign, where he netted eight times and provided five assists in 33 league appearances.

Those performances persuaded Southampton to pay a reported £12 million for his services in August 2012, but he struggled for consistency during his first season in England, despite scoring five goals and bagging three assists in 26 league appearances.

The midfielder spent much of the 2013/14 season on the fringes of the Southampton side under Mauricio Pochettino, before moving to Hull City on a season-long loan in September 2014. He once again struggled to establish himself as a regular starter, though, totalling 23 league appearances for the Tigers, scoring just one Premier League goal.

In January, Ramirez moved to Middlesbrough on loan for the remainder of the 2015/16 campaign, and proved to be a pivotal figure as ‘Boro secured promotion back to the Premier League, scoring seven goals and registering four assists in 18 league matches.

Having played 13 times for Uruguay Under 20s, scoring three goals, Ramirez made his senior debut against Indonesia in October 2010. He also represented his country in the London 2012 football tournament and the 2014 World Cup, and currently has 38 caps to his name, although he has yet to score for his country.

The Prospects

During his loan spell with ‘Boro last season, Ramirez primarily featured in the number ten role in Karanka’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation. While the Spanish boss is known to rotate his attacking options, fellow new signing Viktor Fischer appears likely to occupy one of the wide berths, with the likes of Albert Adomah, Stewart Downing and Cristhian Stuani battling for the other wide position.

Ramirez did only come on as a substitute in three of his 18 league outings for ‘Boro last season, though, suggesting he could be the attacking midfielder least prone to rotation.

Looking at last season’s underlying statistics, Ramirez averaged a shot every 32.4 minutes, better than Stuani (36.6), Adomah (39.9) and Downing (48.2), although Fischer did manage a shot every 29 minutes playing for Ajax. Assessing the creativity of the players last season, Ramirez once again led the way, averaging a key pass every 33.2 minutes, better than Downing (48.2), Adomah (50.2) and Stuani (124.6), while Fischer only created a chance every 62.7 minutes playing in the Eredivisie.

With Fischer, Downing and Adomah all valued at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), it’s likely Ramirez will be priced the same or 6.0 at a push. Certainly, with such favourable opening fixtures (STO, sun, wba, CPL), Ramirez, like many of ‘Boro’s Fantasy assets, look worthy of consideration as budget options for our initial 15-man squads.

The fact that Karanka’s men only scored 63 goals in the Championship last term, ranking them eighth in the division, may bring a sense of caution in backing ‘Boro attackers from the off, though. Nonetheless, their attack has been boosted by the arrival of former Man City striker Alberto Negredo, who netted a debut goal for the Teeside team at the weekend after an effort from Ramirez cannoned back off the post.

Priced at 6.5, Negredo’s instant impact has propelled him onto many radars as a cheap third striker option, though if Ramirez comes in at 5.5, he looks a decent budget midfield option for the opening weeks of the season. Given that he’s familiar with both the Premier League and Karanka’s tactical system, the South American will be looking to finally prove himself after those disappointing spells in the top-flight at Southampton and Hull.

  1. Liverpool midfield - too many options?

Fantasy Football Scout - Daily Hot Topic - Are there too many Liverpool midfielders to choose from?

With Wijnaldum having now signed for Liverpool they have a plethora of options in midfield - Wijnaldum himself, the other new signing Mane and the older guard - Firmino, Coutinho, Milner, Lallana, Can, Lucas, Henderson, Allen.

Wijnaldum has mainly played as an attacking midfielder in his career but has made 48 appearances in central midfield, mostly for PSV.

Do we think that Klopp has brought him in as competition/backup to Mane, Coutinho and Firmino? Or is there a chance he'll get a spot in central midfield?

What price would he need to come in at to get a spot in your team, or are you just not interested?

What about players like Lallana - surely his game time is going to be limited now? Will he move on to another club and would that make him a good option at £7m?

I think Liverpool will score a lot of goals, so the likes of Firmino and Coutino will be in the points, and imo they are most nailed. For long term i'm looking at Milner who, if he is on pens and gets a share of set pieces, is great value at 6,5mil.

He is unlikely to start. I've just done more research and Klopp has intimated that Widj can play deep. Could mean he goes:

        Can-Widj
        Mane-Couts-Firm
        Sturridge

I'm staying away from Liverpool until I wildcard in GW4. They are a wait and see situation for me and their fixtures help this. I am considering the big 3 mids, along with Sturridge. Leaning towards Coutinho but will be watching their first few games.

With Firmino being the only one I am considering currently (and that says something, as I love Mane, and have watched a lot of him at Saints) it's worth noting that Firmino didn't perform well when not in the no.10 or False 9 position. In those positions he was hugely impressive in comparison to the wing role.

      No. 10 / False 9 - 11 goals and 10 assists in 28 games

Playing on the left or right wing / deeper attacking mid position - 1 assist in 21 games

Worth monitoring where Klopp will deploy him, but he appears to be a must playing behind Studge, or as the main focus point when Studge is inevitably injured.

Currently have Firmino but with 2.0m ITB still. Can't decided whether to go with a pair of cheap strikers or not. I may yet get Hazard instead if I do. The Benteke situation is holding me up more than anything.

As a Liverpool fan I've not really been interested in any of the attacking midfielders, the points are going to very spread out across the pitch and there's likely going to be rotation at that.

The only one who has really grabbed me is Grujic, who has looked very good in pre-season going box-to-box and will grab goals when he plays. He won't start a whole lot, but at 5.0 I'm tempted as somebody I'm not relying upon.

From everything I've seen, and this is an oversimplification, it looks to be:

Sturridge, Origi & Ings fighting over 1 spot
Mane, Cout, Firmino, Wijnaldum, Ojo & Lallana fighting over 3 spots
Milner, Henderson, Can & Grujic fighting over 2 spots

That said, Wijnaldum will probably play in some of the deeper spots sometimes, while Hendo and/or Milner could play further up.

Either way, I think we're set for a lot of rotation in attacking areas, so premium options are almost off the table, at least from the start.

There should always be one player in your front 8 you are happy to have sitting on the bench, but will get a 2 point cameo if required.

You should have one of Gray/Deeney.

Ibra has scored in his league debut at Inter, Barca and PSG. Scored in his first 5 La liga games. He is Serie A top scorer twice and Ligue 1 top scorer 3 times. He won bets player in the league 6 times. I think those who think he won't challenge for the golden boot are not being realistic. He is the best player in the league (including Kun). Especially that Mourinho adores him and will build the entire team around him. He will certainly be on penalties and will take some FKs. Even in case he doesn't hit the ground running from the start, he is downgradable to anyone with just 1 transfer (apart from Kun). I don't see what not to like.

There is too much uncertainty in Arsenal and Liverpool and Hazard being priced too high plus the many good mid price options make me want to spend the money getting guaranteed quality. I am staying away from Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea attacking assets at the moment. Ozila n Sanchez having long breaks fter international tournaments. Liverpool have too many attacking options so we don't know how they line up.

The thing with Ibra that he is capable of explosions as much as Kun is if not better since he is a much better assister. Many are arguing that Kun is a must because if you dont have him and he explodes, you have to tear up you team to fit him in. The same applies to Ibra imo.

I always wanted to see him in the Premier League. At the moment he's not in my team but that could change soon. We're not sure who will take penalties for United. I think Rooney is still the first choice.

    Foster (4.5) - Heaton (4.5)
    Shaw (5.5) - Williams (5.0) - Souare (4.5) - Friend (4.5) - Kone (4.5)
    Hazard (10.00) - Mikh (9.5) - Siggy (7.5) - Townsend (6.5) - Hojberg (4.5)
    Kun (13.00) - Costa (9.5) - Long (6.5)

I quite like the balance of my team. Rotating GKs, 3-way DEF rotation - not decided on Shaw and Williams yet.

    Foster
    Fuchs Williams Fiend
    KDB Miki Ayew Mahrez(c)
    Vardy Gray Bats

Vahrez are proven and hull have no spine. Then Ayew(c) week 2 and miki gw 3 then wc.

Any advice on this team would be very much appreciated! I really need the help:

    Goalkeepers
    De Gea (5.5) Jakupovic (4.0)

    Defense
Bellerin (6.5) Dawson (5.0) Alderweireld (6.5) ------ Friend and Browning on the bench (4.5 and 4)

    Midfield
De Bruyne (10.5) Mkhitaryan (9.5) Drinkwater (5.5) Payet (9.5) ---- Grujic on the bench (5)

    Forwards
    Gray (6.5) Kane (11) Long (6.5)

Yeah i wasn't too sure on them either, but I can't think of any alternative to drinkwater in the 5.5 area, and the pickings under that aren't exactly thrilling. would dawson to morgan work?

        1. HamezMace
          • 9 Years

I would look for a three way rotation of 4.5m defenders, there will be some stand out options as we move through the pre-season and likely line ups are confirmed.

I'm not sure about 5.5 mids, but I would downgrade your 5th mid to a 4.5 player - anyone who usually starts, as they are generally just going to sit on the bench everyweek, and then look for a 6m midfielder, I'm sure there will be better options than Drinkwater.

    Draft 5 :

    Foster Jakupovic
    Shaw Terry Baines Friend Paredes
    Mahrez Alli Siggy Fischer Capoue
    Aguero Ibra Austin

Going with Ibra plainly because it's always easier to downgrade than upgrade.
Austin ahead of Long, because he is a better finisher.
Fischer is a punt, Middlesbrough's fixtures are tasty and the guy has a good goalscoring record at Ajax.
