Moving Target – Gaston Ramirez

Last week, Middlesbrough finally confirmed the transfer of midfielder Gaston Ramirez on a free transfer after being released by Southampton. The 25-year-old has signed a three-year contract at the Riverside, where he spent a successful loan spell last season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, ‘Boro manager Aitor Karanka expressed his delight at securing the Uruguayan on a permanent basis:

“It’s good to have him with us again. He was a key player last season and we both knew we wanted to work together again. It’s taken time, but it’s good to have him here. It’s good for the team, for the club, and for him. So we’re all pleased.”

The History

Starting off his youth career at Penarol in Uruguay, Ramirez made his professional debut for the club in 2009 at the age of 18. He went on to make 42 league appearances, scoring eight goals, before securing a move to Italian side Bologna in August 2010 for a fee of € 2.5 million.

Ramirez enjoyed a reasonably successful first campaign in Italy, bagging four goals and two assists in 25 league matches, before really finding his feet during the 2011/12 campaign, where he netted eight times and provided five assists in 33 league appearances.

Those performances persuaded Southampton to pay a reported £12 million for his services in August 2012, but he struggled for consistency during his first season in England, despite scoring five goals and bagging three assists in 26 league appearances.

The midfielder spent much of the 2013/14 season on the fringes of the Southampton side under Mauricio Pochettino, before moving to Hull City on a season-long loan in September 2014. He once again struggled to establish himself as a regular starter, though, totalling 23 league appearances for the Tigers, scoring just one Premier League goal.

In January, Ramirez moved to Middlesbrough on loan for the remainder of the 2015/16 campaign, and proved to be a pivotal figure as ‘Boro secured promotion back to the Premier League, scoring seven goals and registering four assists in 18 league matches.

Having played 13 times for Uruguay Under 20s, scoring three goals, Ramirez made his senior debut against Indonesia in October 2010. He also represented his country in the London 2012 football tournament and the 2014 World Cup, and currently has 38 caps to his name, although he has yet to score for his country.

The Prospects

During his loan spell with ‘Boro last season, Ramirez primarily featured in the number ten role in Karanka’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation. While the Spanish boss is known to rotate his attacking options, fellow new signing Viktor Fischer appears likely to occupy one of the wide berths, with the likes of Albert Adomah, Stewart Downing and Cristhian Stuani battling for the other wide position.

Ramirez did only come on as a substitute in three of his 18 league outings for ‘Boro last season, though, suggesting he could be the attacking midfielder least prone to rotation.

Looking at last season’s underlying statistics, Ramirez averaged a shot every 32.4 minutes, better than Stuani (36.6), Adomah (39.9) and Downing (48.2), although Fischer did manage a shot every 29 minutes playing for Ajax. Assessing the creativity of the players last season, Ramirez once again led the way, averaging a key pass every 33.2 minutes, better than Downing (48.2), Adomah (50.2) and Stuani (124.6), while Fischer only created a chance every 62.7 minutes playing in the Eredivisie.

With Fischer, Downing and Adomah all valued at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), it’s likely Ramirez will be priced the same or 6.0 at a push. Certainly, with such favourable opening fixtures (STO, sun, wba, CPL), Ramirez, like many of ‘Boro’s Fantasy assets, look worthy of consideration as budget options for our initial 15-man squads.

The fact that Karanka’s men only scored 63 goals in the Championship last term, ranking them eighth in the division, may bring a sense of caution in backing ‘Boro attackers from the off, though. Nonetheless, their attack has been boosted by the arrival of former Man City striker Alberto Negredo, who netted a debut goal for the Teeside team at the weekend after an effort from Ramirez cannoned back off the post.

Priced at 6.5, Negredo’s instant impact has propelled him onto many radars as a cheap third striker option, though if Ramirez comes in at 5.5, he looks a decent budget midfield option for the opening weeks of the season. Given that he’s familiar with both the Premier League and Karanka’s tactical system, the South American will be looking to finally prove himself after those disappointing spells in the top-flight at Southampton and Hull.

Morning team, is there an article or post detailing which players were involved in competitions over the summer/who's unlikely to be risked on GW1?

Now that I have a grav please rate my team...

Foster (great run to start in a defensive team)
Boruc (decent rotation when WBA fixtures get hairy)

Jones (providing he looks a starter - dubious)
Stones (if the City move goes through soon)
Terry (I think Conte will love him)
    Friend (good fixtures)
McAuley (clean sheets and goal threat)

    Mkhitaryan (can't help myself)
Hazard ( back to his best?)
Bolasie (maverick who done me proud briefly last year)
Sigurdsson (always confident when owning him)
    Hojbjerg (benchboy - monitoring Leko)

    Aguero (C)
Costa (if the Atleti rumour calms down)
Austin (likely to start and potential gold)

    Can't wait folks!

      Heaton over Boruc.

Not keen on 3/5 of the defensive picks.

Like the rest but with potential doubt over Austin starting.

I'm not keen either but I can see the whoopsy stickers. Man U for 5, City for 5 and Chelsea 5.5. Bargains if they are nailed. I can easily tidy it up if not with a couple of downgrades.

I don't see Bournemouth keeping clean sheets. I would stay away from doubling up on West Brom, but that's a fear I have. I don't start the season with doubled up defence. If you really want Bournemouth coverage, Francis can offer some attacking return if he keeps up his end-season form. I would recommend Taylor. If you want WBA, keep an eye on Evans. BPS magnet. I don't like Bolasie as a pick, but I can see why people rate him. Maybe downgrade Hazard (since you have Costa) to Mahrez to upgrade Bolasie to a 6.5? Asides from the rotation threats, solid team.

        Cheers.

Will look at Mahrez if he stays at Leicester. I take your point re Bolasie but he's a guilty pleasure now.

A part of me wants to pick a team of 11 nailed on giants and 4 cheapos and select based on gw1-3 then wildcard my real team during international break. But I fear it's negative thinking when that wildcard might come in really handy in November or something.

Was just considering Costa. Just had a check through Conte's time at Juventus though and his strikers goal scoring records is a bit concerning. To say he won the Title 3 times his highest scoring striker was Tevez with 19 in the league in 13/14. Llorente got 16 in the same season, but after that it's Matri & Vidal with 10 each in separate seasons.

      You Butchered it.

Nah pretty good team that, fairly template 🙂
I'd be worried about going Kun-less, first name on my team. Would personally prefer going Kun + Bench instead of Lukaku + Firmino

Leaving Kun out would anyway be just temporarily (if I ever have the nerves to keep him out) as apparently he's back from holidays quite out of shape, again to be be monitored over next 3 weeks.

Regarding template, I agree here on FFS it is template but the selected players are far from the "most selected by" in the game, so might be still good diferential vs. the mass 🙂

Very similar to mine! Have Willian over Fab currently (plays higher up the pitch so better chance of being involved in goals IMO), otherwise same midfield. Gone for Aguero, Carroll and Berahino up front, and have Fuchs, Gabriel and Fernandez in place of Baines, Friend and McAuley (also have Shaw and Pieters). Then Courtois and Jakupovic as the GKs.

I am still monitoring the Mandanda incorporation into the team, but the guy is a beast, so if he's nailed i'll start him especially if Berahino moves out of WBA.
I pretty feel it might actually end-up 0-0 also if CPL do not sign a striker by gw1...

Which is the best way to go, a quality front eight that you can rotate due to fixtures or a fixed front seven with a cheap £4.5 million midfielder.

In the past I have always gone with the second option because I was never comfortable benching a quality player even if they had a tough fixture.

This season seems slightly different to me. There seems so many good midfield options at the £6.5-£7.5 million plus some good £6.5 million strikers that it seems fairly easy to have a really good front eight this season where it will be easier to rotate due to fixtures. One example would be where you have say, Andros Townsend in midfield and Andre Gray up front. If Palace had Hull at home And Burnley were away to Chelsea, you would obviously play Townsend and bench Gray. If you had a cheap midfielder you would probably still play Gray, where the possibility of him scoring more than 2 points remote, if not impossible.

The problem may arise when all your front 8 players have good fixtures, who to drop and will you get it right. Sods law suggests that you wont and will end up benching the wrong player.

I would really appreciate everyones thoughts on this. Currently I have Darren Fletcher as my fifth midfielder but could quite easily upgrade to a far better player with a bit of tinkering.

Either way has merit. Agree that this season the first route is more easy to achieve. But as you say, complete roll of the dice. Ask again in 8 weeks 🙂

I also struggle with that dilemma. I don't usually care about benching £, and I like to have options to choose from. I find myself benching points when I have a decent 8, which is ineveitable. Although I usually finding myself benching the same player. Also, since the money is spread out fairly evenly everywhere, getting bandwagons will be tougher and will usually require 2 transfers. I'm starting with Capoue as my fodder and am leaning towards the 7, but will probably be tempted by 8 again when I WC.

"where the possibility of him scoring more than 2 points remote, if not impossible." i dont agree with this. every team concedes. and gray is where most of burnley (he plays for burnley right?) are likely to come from.

Totally agree with you, that's why I said not impossible. What I meant was the likelihood of him scoring away at one of the big guns is probably less than 25% but if he was playing at home against a lower team he would have a far greater chance of scoring, because like you say, if Burnley score, there is a strong possibility that it will be Gray.

I'm just not sure that if you have someone like Gray as your third forward, then you may struggle if you also have a cheap 5th midfielder because I can see Burnley blanking on occasions and it might be better to have a rotation policy if you have players from Burnley, Palace etc.

The second option for me but the tricky thing is always working out how predictable these team's results will be. Last season was an absolute nightmare for that

Agree, but I do think that this season will be more like the previous ones. Can anyone realistically think that we will have another season like last season? ie. Leicester winning the league.

It is tempting to just have Aguero up front this season, and flood the defence and midfield with top players. Lukaku, Costa etc will be playing in 4-4-2. Mane and Matip could be fantastic this season. Matip goes forward, Mane looks good in preseason.

Which option is better for the first 3 GWs only:

    A) Foster solo, with a 4.0
    B) Mandanda/Mannone rotation

Been on Foster for a while but now I have a spare 0.5 kicking around, so might swell upgrade the 4.0 keeper. Only problem is whether Mandanda will go straight in as no.1 and whether there's an outside chance Moyes will prefer Pickford to Mannone?

I agree I'm not convinced by him either but playing for Soton he was my choice from that price range...Don't think Negredo will score well playing for Boro and it usually takes strikers from promoted clubs a while to settle..I like the WAT fixture for Long in GW1 also

So Townsend is in a lot of teams then, mine included at present, but are the opening 2 fixtures (WBA, tot) really that good for his prospects?

WBA were one of the better defensive teams in the league away from home last year, and I expect Pulis to set them up primarily not to concede in this game. And considering that most of us have at least 1 WBA defender/keeper, any Townsend attacking returns will be negated somewhat.

And then there's Spurs away, who were probably the best team defensively last season, not to mention that Palace struggle away from home in attack.

Factoring in a likely GW4 WC, it has me wondering if Andros is worth it for the opening trio. Discuss.

I agree, I'm on Townsend at the minute but also have double WBA def and looking to use WC in GW4. There just doesn't seem to be anyone better in around that price other than a punt on someone like Iwobi, Redmond, Fegouli, etc.

I'm looking at ditching Townsend for a 4.5m and beefing up the defence

Pulis' teams have a history of struggling against wingers. It's a home again so I'd expect him to get attacking returns.

Did you see what he did to Spurs on the last day of last season? They will be without Dembele again.
