Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round-Up

Sergio Aguero emerges from the bench to net in his first appearance under new Man City boss Pep Guardiola. Chuba Akpom and Joel Campbell grab a goal apiece as Arsenal defeat an MLS All-Stars team, whilst a Mark Noble penalty isn’t enough as West Ham fall to defeat in the Europa League qualifiers.

AT&T All-Stars 1 Arsenal 2

Chuba Akpom struck late, from a Nacho Monreal cross, to secure victory for Arsenal over a star-studded MLS team.

Joel Campbell opened the scoring in the first half, converting a penalty he had earned himself, before a certain Didier Drogba came off the bench to score his usual goal against the Gunners.

With Per Mertesacker missing the start of the season with a knee injury, Gabriel sidelined due to illness and Laurent Koscielny yet to return to action, Arsene Wenger handed a debut to new singing Rob Holding at the heart of the defence. Petr Cech and Jack Wilshere were also given their first run-outs of pre-season and Theo Walcott started up front.

Wenger then made five changes at half-time, with Hector Bellerin and Granit Xhaka, playing for the first time since Euro 2016.

The more pertinent events seem to be happening off the field, with reports that the Gunners are close to signing Leicester midfielder Riyad Mahrez. Although he refused to discuss an transfer targets, Wenger confirmed he is determined to bolster his options in the final third:

”At the moment, I do not have too many attacking options. Let’s not forget that there are still a few players at home, and that a few players didn’t play today, like Cazorla. Then of course you have Ozil and Ramsey at home, even Giroud is not here. We have options, but we still look outside to find one more”.

The Arsenal boss also took time to praise the performance of Holding – priced at 4.5 in FPL – in the heart of defence:

“He has adapted surprisingly in a very good way. He reads the game well and understands what’s going on. He anticipates well and that’s a quality, at such a young age, that you don’t find a lot”.

Arsenal XI: Cech (Martinez 67), Debuchy (Bellerin 46), Gibbs (Monreal 46), Holding, Bielik (Xhaka 46), Campbell (Reine Adelaide 67), Oxlade-Chamberlain (Willock 67), Elneny (Zelalem 67), Coquelin (Chambers 46), Wilshere (Iwobi 46), Walcott (Akpom 67).

Man City 1 Borussia Dortmund 1 (City win 6-5 on penalties)

Pep Guardiola oversaw a win, of sorts, as stand-in goalkeeper Angus Gunn excelled in a penalty shoot-out victory over Dortmund.

The side was decidedly more senior than the one that took the field against Bayern Munich, and Guardiola took the chance to start with an experimental formation involving three centre-halves – Nicolas Otamendi, Aleksandar Kolarov and Tosin Adarabioyo – and Gael Clichy and Jesus Navas used as wing-backs.

Dortmund had the better of the first period, but the introduction of yet more first team regulars among eight changes at the break galvanised City.

On came Yaya Toure, David Silva, Wilfried Bony and Sergio Aguero as Guardiola reverted to a back four and watched his team exert a measure of control that led to Aguero’s 76th minute tap-in from a Silva pass.

Jason Denayer was also given his first run-out of the summer, as was new signing Nolito, who came on as a late sub for Toure.

An even later equaliser then sent the match into penalties as half-time substitute Gunn enjoyed his moment of glory.

One player who covered himself in rather less glory was unused sub Samir Nasri – the first official ‘victim’ of Guardiola’s new stand against overweight players.

The City boss issued an update on the Frenchman, who has yet to feature due to fitness concerns:

“Samir arrived a little bit overweight but he’s much much better now. Still there is a little bit of weight. Last season he was injured and we want to avoid that. The players that are on the pitch they are fit, their weight is in the right place to arrive at many minutes like Tosin [Adarabioyo] today or like Fernandinho or like Kolarov and all the other ones. But hopefully in the next two weeks he will be right with us.”

Man City XI: Caballero (Gunn 45), Clichy (Maffeo 45), Otamendi (Denayer 45), Adarabioyo, Kolarov (Angelino 64), Fernando (A.Garcia 45), Delph (Toure 45 sub: Nolito 84), Fernandinho (c), Zinchenko (Silva 45), Navas (Bony 45 sub: Sterling 84), Iheanacho (Aguero 45).

NK Domzale 2 West Ham1

West Ham emerged from their first competitive fixture of the season with a vital away goal and serious concerns about their defence.

The Hammers were outplayed for large swathes of their UEFA Europa League third qualifying round first leg in Slovenia, and only a superb late double save by Adrian kept the scoreline the right side of manageable.

Coach Slaven Bilic had to watch the match from the stands as he serves a UEFA touchline ban, and the view from there was not a good one – with Aaron Cresswell out for four months with a knee injury picked up against Karlsruhe he was forced to play Sam Byram out of position at left back while using Michail Antonio on the opposite flank.

The latter struggled throughout, perhaps raising question marks over his ability to nail down a role in Bilic’s defence. Antonio lost possession in the lead-up to Domzale’s first goal, when Havard Nordtveit was adjudged to have handled in the area, and was way out of position when the hosts regained the lead early in the second half.

In between those two strikes Mark Noble converted a penalty after Winston Reid had been flattened by Domzale’s goalkeeper Axel Maraval, but West Ham were second-best for most of the night, betrayed by an understandable lack of sharpness and a defence that failed to work as a unit.

New signing Sofiane Feghouli was one of the few positives for the Hammers, attacking with real potency and providing excellent set-piece deliveries in the absence of Dmitri Payet, but he faded markedly after the break – much like the rest of the team.

After the loss, assistant boss Nikola Jurcevi gave an update on injured duo Gokhan Tore and Manuel Lanzini ahead of next week’s return leg:

It’s difficult to say which players will play because Gokhan Tore was injured in training on Monday and he must have a scan. Tore has hurt his knee, but we are not sure how serious, It was a very easy training, but after five minutes he felt some pain in his knee. He will have a scan on Friday and we hope it will not be serious. With (Manuel) Lanzini, we don’t have exact information. He will come back from America, where he wanted to play in the Olympic Games for Argentina. We don’t know, but we think he will not be fit for the next game against Domzale.”

West Ham XI: Adrian, Antonio (Quina 80), Nordtveit, Reid, Byram, Obiang, Kouyate, Feghouli, Noble, Valencia, Carroll.

Is this too much money spent on defence?

    Foster (4.5) / Heaton (4.5)

    Azpi (6.0) / Van Dijk (5.5) / Pieters (4.5) / Friend (4.5) / Paredes (4.0)

Wilson right now, but I like Gray enough I'm even considering both and seeing if that helps the rest of my team. I like the look of Rondon too, but I think Wilson/Gray trumps him.

    Valdes (Jaku)
Shaw - Cedric - Taylor (Funes Mori - Lenihan)
Hazard - Martial - Ayew - Deulofeu (Leko)
    Aguero - Vardy - Long

Initially plan to rotate Cedric/Taylor/Funes Mori for the first 3 GWs.

I'll be jumping on price changes and probably WC during the international break.

Think I'll leave it at this for now and revisit next weekend - unless anyone can see anything obvious?

I'll be keeping an eye on Ayew & Funes Mori (Stones), and may potentially go Valdes -> Foster.

      Looks decent overall.
      * I'd monitor the Cedric situation. Cuco Martina has been good at right back in pre-season and Cedric mightn't be 100% up to speed back from the Euros.
      * Funes mori won't start unless John Stones is sold.
      * I'd be concerned that Martial mightn't start Gameweek 1 back from the Euros
      *Deulofeu mightn't be nailed

Funes Mori started over Stones in the latter games of last season. I know it's a different manager, different times etc. but it's not set in stone.

I'd expect two centre backs to be brought in when Stones leaves, so RFM isn't guaranteed anything at this stage so there is some element of value to your comment 🙂

the thing is there are still plenty of players to flesh a good team out, but if you can't get the premium player you may as well block people out and use it to your advantage.

Everyone goes straight for the strikers normally so you can get some leverage early by effectively crapping out other people's defences!

There has been plenty said about the respective merits of Spurs players in the first 4 games of the season with Dembele missing, but just how important was he last year?

With Dembele in the side Spurs won 51% of their games, compared to 44% without him. Without him the loss rate was 44%, including both games against Newcastle, Southampton and West Ham. With him Spurs lost just 2 games, a mere 7% of the time.

Without Dembele in the side Spurs conceded 13 goals (1.44 per game) and scored 12 (1.33 per game). With him 57 were scored (1.97 per game) and 22 conceded (0.76 per game). It would appear then that both attacking and defensive prospects are hindered without Dembele in the lineup.

Dembele himself certainly isn't an attractive fantasy pick with just 3 goals and 1 assist last season, but without him the likes of Kane, Walker, Eriksen etc. certainly come with a degree of caution.

oh, wait... it just occurred to me that PL teams scored a combined 567 goals at home and only 459 goals away! 😯

That's over 100 goals more for home than away players! How is that possible when players evidently don't score more home than away!?

And, quite surprisingly, teams also won 578 points at home, and only 455 away! 😯 It almost looks as if teams got better results at home than away!

I'm not convinced by that one actually. There's more to keeping clean sheets than just having defensive players on the pitch. Dembele's ridiculous pass and dribble completion means he just doesn't give the ball away. With the Pochettino system pushing players high up the pitch this is vital for avoiding counter attacks and getting CS's

        Yep.

That's why I think the Wanyama signing means that Spurs options are all perfectly viable for the start of the season.

My take is that the attack suffered without Dembele because Alli wasn't playing in an attacking role in the matches that he missed.

If you want to know why the defence suffered without Dembele check out his Tackles Per Game last season, compared to Mason, Carroll or Alli who replaced him in that role. Then look at Wanyama's Tackles Per Game. I think he'll protect the defence as well as Dembele did, and will enable Alli to play in the hole, a combination which was crucial to Kane's success last season.

I can't say I fully agree. In the games that Dembele missed, Alli only played in the deeper role on two occasions. GW6 v Cpl and GW7 v Man City, the one game without Dembele that Kane scored. In the other games featuring Alli but no Dembele, Tom Carroll played in that role twice, Eriksen once and Mason once. Alli was up alongside Kane but no goals came

          1. Ludo
            • 10 Years

Alli also played deep in GW27 against Swansea in Dembele's absence. But it's not just that Alli was always playing deep in the games Dembele wasn't - he was often not in the team at all. For the final two games of the season that Dembele missed through suspension, (2-1 and 5-1 defeats against Southampton and Newcastle), Alli was also suspended. Dembele played the first three games of the season on the right wing, which came before Alli had broken into the team. Alli also only made a cameo off the bench in the defeat to West Ham, another match where they were without Dembele.

What this means it that the games that Alli played in the hole last season closely correspond with those that Dembele played in the double pivot. More precisely, Alli started in the hole in 17 of the 21 games that Dembele played in the double pivot, and in just 4 of the 17 games where Dembele didn't.

Kane with Dembele at DM - 21 games, 20 goals, 1 assist
Kane without Dembele at DM - 17 games, 5 goals

Kane with Alli at AM - 21 games, 19 goals, 1 assist
Kane without Alli at AM - 17 games, 7 goals

Given the overlap of fixtures, it's no surprise that both conditions seem to make a similar difference to Kane's performance. In my opinion, though, the impact of Dembele's absence on Kane was largely coincidental, with Alli being the real key.

Good points well made. Kane and Alli certainly struck up a great understanding last season, and of course Kane is capable of scoring goals without Dembele on the pitch. from both the stats and having the privilege/heartache of watching spurs every week you really cannot underestimate Dembele's Impact to just keep the team ticking along, and allowing everything else to work to full effectiveness.

Also, in terms of tackles Wanyama won 55% of 129, Dembele won 72% of 117. Dembele was also vastly superior at holding onto the ball and therefore avoiding counter attacks with the rest of the team pushed on

Fair enough, Wanyama isn't quite at Dembele's level in that regard, but I still think he represents a significant improvement on last season's options.

Tackles Won Per Game in 2015/16:

            Dembele - 3.19
            Wanyama - 2.44
            Mason - 1.98
            Alli - 1.86
            Carroll - 1.25

These are far from directly comparable because:

              1) Spurs had over 55% possession, Saints less than 50%.

              2) Mason and Carroll played mostly scrap minutes, so their per game stats will be like per 20 minutes, whereas Wanyama's are like per 85 minutes.

                per90 tackles+interceptions (successful):

                Wanyama 5.8
                Carroll 5.2
                Mason 3.8

This still is without possession adjustment.

Yep, I realised that myself - the stats I posted were per 90 minutes, not per game, for the exact reason you pointed out.

Possession is something I hadn't considered, and is a good point. Either way, I don't think it's a stretch to say Wanyama is a step up on Mason/Carroll at protecting Spurs' back four.

    Revamp this MF?

    Sigg (7.5) - Tadic (7.5) - Gradel (5.5) - Bolasie (6.0) - Deulofeu (6.5)

Total cost = £33m. Deulofeu is the 'dodgy' one I reckon. Downgrading him to Fletcher unlocks £2m.

But are there 7.5s worth having to replace Gradel, that will get significantly more points than Gradel/Deulofeu? Equally, are there 8.0s worth having to replace Bolasie, at the expense of a real 5th midfield option?

My midfield of : KDB - Mkhi - Mahrez - Firmino - Mirallas , means my attack and defence make for interesting reading? Which are you guys prioritising? Defense, mid or attack?

Im going for a mix of strong mid and strikers, my backs wouldnt be the best then

I'm just questioning whether or not defense is infact the most important, or whether you are best to compromise your defence, for big hitters elsewhere

Carrick and Kanté aren't FPL picks, look for more attacking cheap mids such as Gradel

Tottenham 0⃣️-1⃣️ Atletico Madrid match report

    ⭐ players: Mason, Eriksen, Lamela

    Notes
    - Spurs were the better team in the 1st half but couldn’t convert their chances.
    - Denied by the post twice and 3 or 4 good saves from Oblak.
    - Second half was lacklustre after Eriksen and Lamela were subbed but was sparked with the introduction of Ryan Mason.
    - Defended much better than the loss to Juventus but still missing 4 of their main defensive assets.
    - Janssen not convincing in the two games I’ve watched. Spurs missing Kane badly.

Tottenham 1st half (4-2-3-1): Vorm; Trippier, Walkes, Carter-Vickers, Yedlin; Wanyama, Winks; Lamela, Eriksen, Onomah; Janssen.

1’’ Trippier is down injured (ankle) after a tackle by Partey. After a minute or so he returns to the pitch. ☠
7’’ Eriksen drives a shot towards goal after a pass from Janssen but it’s saved sloppily and loops over the goal for a corner.
7’’ Resulting corner comes to nothing. Shot from about 35 yards from Winks that goes over the bar.
10’’ Onomah’s shot deep inside the box rattles the crossbar.
22’’ Lamela played in from a flick by Janssen. He readjusts himself as the defender closes him down and his shot strikes the inside of the post and comes back out.
40’’ After a quiet spell in play with no major chances, Atletico have a free kick. The ball is drifted in and despite Walkes’ effort to clear it, his header causes the ball to skim onto the path of Godin who slots it home from a yard or two out. The players look for an offside flag but they’re not going to get it. ⚽

Tottenham 2nd half: Vorm (4-2-3-1); Trippier, Walkes, Carter-Vickers, Yedlin; Carroll, Winks; Son, Mason, Onomah; Janssen.

59’’ Son dinks a ball to Mason who is running into the box. He hits it on the half-volley and forces Oblak into a strong save that put the ball out for a corner.
61’’ Yedlin, Trippier and Onomah subbed for Miller, Peters and Chadli. ↩️
62’’ Mason is fouled on the edge of the box. Janssen stands over the ball and hits it sweetly forcing Oblak into making yet another fantastic save to deny Spurs.
74’’ Vorm, Winks and Janssen subbed for McGee, Edwards and Ball. ↩️
90'' Chance for Spurs to equalise but the cross can't be reached and is cleared.

    Match rating: ★★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆

Thought Lamela was a bit sloppy at times in the first half. Gave the ball away too easily on a number of occasions. Didn't see the second half.

Thought Jansen was alright. Hold up play was decent. Brought others into play well.

How were the Americans, CCV and Yedlin? Sounds like Eriksen was on--true?

Oh dear your bench won't be of much use and your startin 11 aren't the ones you want at this stage.

      Downgrade Bellerin and Ozil.
      Bellerin to Fuchs/Baines
      Wasi to Pieters
Paredes to Lenihan - solely because Lenihan will play and Paredes won't
      Ozil to either Townsend/Gradel/Tadic

bellerin is a bad choice at the start for 3 reasons. >4.5 and get your 4.0's to dudes who play. Awful was way harsh.
