Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Virgil van Dijk

Having arrived at Southampton last summer with a reputation as a goal scoring defender, after netting nine times in two seasons at Celtic, Virgil van Dijk managed a respectable three strikes in 34 Premier League appearances as Saints secured a sixth place finish.

The Dutch international, who cost Southampton £13 million, impressed in his first season in England, forming a strong centre-back partnership with Jose Fonte, and, having settled at St. Mary’s, could be set for an even more productive campaign this time around.

The 25-year-old is an imposing figure, standing at six foot four inches tall, and, as is the case with the majority of Dutch footballers, is very strong technically, with the central defender confident when dribbling the ball, and also able to initiate attacks through his wide range of passing.

The fact that Van Dijk was handed a new six-year contract in May certainly illustrates the club’s faith in the former Groningen defender, so he’ll be expected to continue his development as a player over the coming years.

Key Factors

  • Van Dijk’s attacking statistics last season were pretty impressive across the board, finishing fifth among defenders for both penalty box touches (71), and shots on target (nine). He ended the campaign joint-eighth among defenders for total goal attempts, with 29, the same number as Crystal Palace’s Scott Dann, who netted five times in 2015/16. The Dutchman is particularly dominant in the air, having won 158 headers last term, 36 more than any other defender. His aerial presence should continue to be crucial at both ends of the pitch, then, and with Dusan Tadic looking nailed on under new Saints boss Claude Puel, Van Dijk should benefit from strong set-piece delivery in the final third. It’s worth noting he’s already found the back of the net during pre-season, scoring in Southampton’s 2-1 win against FC Twente.
  • Despite the changes in management, Southampton have registered 15, 15 and 12 clean sheets over the past three seasons, providing Fantasy managers with a reliable source of defensive returns. The early signs under Puel appear positive in that regard, having only conceded one goal in four matches thus far during pre-season, so Van Dijk should continue to offer a dual threat at either end of the pitch.
  • After finishing last season with 130 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), joint-tenth among defenders, Van Dijk has once again been valued at 5.5. That’s the same price as fellow Saints defenders Fonte and Ryan Bertrand, while Cedric Soares and Cuco Martina, who look set to battle it out for the right-back position once again, are available at 5.0 and 4.5 respectively. The Dutchman’s superior goal threat makes him the standout option, with his ability to shoot from long distance, be it from open play or a free-kick, also an added string to his bow. That’s reflected by the former Celtic man currently having an ownership of 11.2% in FPL, more than both Fonte (9%) and Bertrand (4.4%).
  • Southampton face three very appealing home fixtures over the opening five Gameweeks (WAT, SUN, SWA), affording Puel the perfect opportunity to get off to a strong start at St Mary’s. Although that is somewhat offset by the fact they also travel to both Man United and Arsenal, Van Dijk’s goal threat means he’s still more than capable of prevailing across those tricky pair of road trips.
  • While Van Dijk offers plenty of appeal due to his attacking threat and potential clean sheet points, the Dutch international also flourishes when it comes to the Bonus Point System (BPS). He gained 16 bonus points last term, fifth among defenders, and finished fourth at the back for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI), making him a particularly strong option for those plum home fixtures in which Southampton have historically thrived in.

How's this coming along? Comments gratefully received - not sold on my midfield at all.

    Courtois, Jaku
    Walker, Shaw, Gabriel, Evans, Friend
    Hazard, Lamela, Sigurdsson, Gradel, Jedinak

Don't like the midfield. Gradel, Lamela and Jedinak seem lightweight for 3rd and 4th mid spots.

Any suggestions for replacements? Could stretch to Tadic over Lamela and then get a 4m defender in instead of Friend?

Gradel is passable. Never a fan of Lamela so would look to get rid. Jedinak may as well stay being a 4.5 but you could find a few others with more potential in the 4.5s. Really depends on when you WC and how much you would use Friend to figure if saving 0.5 there is worthwhile.

Yeah I think Gradel could be worth a punt, he did well in limited minutes last year. I would prefer someone like Townsend for 6.5m but struggling to see where I can get that money from.

I agree on Lamela - he came in for me yesterday but I think Tadic will end up in there.

Jedinak is never intending to get on my pitch but might well swap him out for someone else.

    Foster
    Stones, Shaw, Wimmer (or Kone)
    Mahrez, Ozil, Ayew, Phillips
    Aguero, Ibra, Negredo

Jaku - Wolly, Pacedes, 4.5 Mid

Looking good. Might be difficult playing Phillips each week - you could think about getting someone cheaper in for Ozil or Mahrez and upgrading him.

I'm sure you know as well, but Wimmer will probably only be starting for a week or two so keep that monitored as you might want to swap him out before the season starts.

Also consider a different defender (perhaps Boro) instead of Wolly because Stoke's fixtures are tough to start the season.

      1. Pumpkinhead
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 9 months ago

Very Fair - Phillips can be upgraded to Redmond or any other 6.0 mid - if he falters.

Wimmer is really a place holder - If Verts injury drags on - would be a cheap in to the D.

Good point on Wolly - Friend seems an easy swap.

I think I would use your spare 0.5m on a 6m midfielder at the start of the season, easier to downgrade than to be disciplined and keep that in the bank for an upgrade. Otherwise I think Gradel could be a good shout at 5.5m

It must be stressful to make decisions based only on someone else's say-so because then if/when it doesn't work out, how do you know what moves to make? Just ask the group again I suppose. The RMTs I find useful to unearth the odd idea that I hadn't yet considered especially at the budget end of the market (EG Fry, Friend, Capoue - the guys who won't even make the 11 most of the time) but no-one really knows who will perform best out of the group of 7.5 mids or the 6.5 strikers. Some players you pick will fail and some will succeed but it's a lot more satisfying when they succeed and you know you picked them based on your own logic and analysis of form and fixtures and likewise it's a lot less stressful when a player fails if you have a clear idea why you picked him in the first place

      2. Debauchy
        • 11 Years
        7 years, 9 months ago

Yeah. It is difficult not to though , if you're on here every day being bombarded with the same reasons to pick player X , it kinda grows on you hey ?

          • 8 Years
          7 years, 9 months ago

Some do, yeah. I use the opinions and RMTs to unearth a few ideas for the shortlist for further research. I'm still going Carroll over Gray and Arnautovic over Tadic to start in spite of 80% of RMTs disagreeing. As you mentioned, you really have to consider if the person giving the advice knows any more than you do

    Three random questions:

When is Brunt going to be back from the injury? GW 3?

Why is Valencia being overlooked so much compared to Shaw?

And isn't Delaney a good option too? Yes, he's priced at 5.0 but he's got good fixtures compared to most defenders in that price bracket and he scored 2 goals and 4 assists last season.

Not sure on Brunt, Valencia has a fair bit of competition including Darmian and Tomkins is a new signing so Delaney may not even start.

If we do not buy another RB you can expect Valencia to start. In the friendly against Galatasaray Valencia started, and it looked like Jose was using our strongest side (apart from Smalling and a new midfielder). I am atleast confident he will start (unless new RB), and as you say his attacking return has been great in pre- season and he picked up many points towards the end of last season. But as I have stated many times there are rumours regarding a new RB, specifically Fabinho.

Well it is a possibility, but I think we will get pogba (or another midfielder) and if we get fabinho he will actually play RB. I am not going to pretend that I know a lot about fabinho, but I doubt Jose would buy a player to play him out of his usual position...

That's fair enough, but it's the only form we've got at the moment. I agree though pre-season form should be considered, but not as much as form in the league

I've gone kun, ibra and hazard too and there isn't really a better option. You can only only really play around with your third forward, and maybe 2 of the mids and defenders

So i have a similar team but i've got firmino over tadic. I've had to downgrade one of my defenders tho

Won a LCFC shirt from my mini league from the 15/16 season, now I am unsure about which player print to get on it though.

Is there a common conception about it, like would you avoid getting Mahrez, if you feared he would leave the club? Preferably I would get the 15/16 version, but it is sold out.

Hope to hear from you on this one 😉

Don't like the defence and it's too expensive anyhow

Navas? That's a rogue pick for sure. Nolito sterling and Kdb all surely above him in the pecking order now

Antonio is far too expensive for a midfielder who may well end up playing at RB

        There's no aguero

Good points on Navas. Brought in Tadic instead.

The defense is mostly build around the early fixtures - looking to bring in Arsenal/Liverpool/Chelsea a few GW's in.

      Current draft. Explanations below.

      Foster, Jakupovic
      Shaw, Terry, Evans, Friend, Mee
      Hazard, Mahrez, Firmino, Alli, Capoue
      Aguero, Wilson, Gray

      * Originally had Foster/Heaton but feared benching points, plus save 0.5 with Jakupovic as permanent bench keeper.
      * Evans/Friend/Mee rotation in the first 20GWs gives 18 home fixtures, and only 1 fixture against last year's top 10 (WHM at home)
      * Admittedly unsure about Terry's gametime but cannot squeeze 0.5 for Azpilicueta
      * I like midfielders who play like forwards - Hazard, Mahrez, Firmino and Alli are all goalscorers who like to get into the box
      * Having 2x 6.5 strikers possibly a risk, but having Ibrahimovic/Kane upsets the balance too much, and too many question marks in the 9-9.5 range (Costa, Lukaku, Batshuayi, Rooney etc)
      * All 3 of my strikers are nailed on for their teams, and take penalties

      Criticisms very gratefully received.
