Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Virgil van Dijk

Having arrived at Southampton last summer with a reputation as a goal scoring defender, after netting nine times in two seasons at Celtic, Virgil van Dijk managed a respectable three strikes in 34 Premier League appearances as Saints secured a sixth place finish.

The Dutch international, who cost Southampton £13 million, impressed in his first season in England, forming a strong centre-back partnership with Jose Fonte, and, having settled at St. Mary’s, could be set for an even more productive campaign this time around.

The 25-year-old is an imposing figure, standing at six foot four inches tall, and, as is the case with the majority of Dutch footballers, is very strong technically, with the central defender confident when dribbling the ball, and also able to initiate attacks through his wide range of passing.

The fact that Van Dijk was handed a new six-year contract in May certainly illustrates the club’s faith in the former Groningen defender, so he’ll be expected to continue his development as a player over the coming years.

Key Factors

  • Van Dijk’s attacking statistics last season were pretty impressive across the board, finishing fifth among defenders for both penalty box touches (71), and shots on target (nine). He ended the campaign joint-eighth among defenders for total goal attempts, with 29, the same number as Crystal Palace’s Scott Dann, who netted five times in 2015/16. The Dutchman is particularly dominant in the air, having won 158 headers last term, 36 more than any other defender. His aerial presence should continue to be crucial at both ends of the pitch, then, and with Dusan Tadic looking nailed on under new Saints boss Claude Puel, Van Dijk should benefit from strong set-piece delivery in the final third. It’s worth noting he’s already found the back of the net during pre-season, scoring in Southampton’s 2-1 win against FC Twente.
  • Despite the changes in management, Southampton have registered 15, 15 and 12 clean sheets over the past three seasons, providing Fantasy managers with a reliable source of defensive returns. The early signs under Puel appear positive in that regard, having only conceded one goal in four matches thus far during pre-season, so Van Dijk should continue to offer a dual threat at either end of the pitch.
  • After finishing last season with 130 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), joint-tenth among defenders, Van Dijk has once again been valued at 5.5. That’s the same price as fellow Saints defenders Fonte and Ryan Bertrand, while Cedric Soares and Cuco Martina, who look set to battle it out for the right-back position once again, are available at 5.0 and 4.5 respectively. The Dutchman’s superior goal threat makes him the standout option, with his ability to shoot from long distance, be it from open play or a free-kick, also an added string to his bow. That’s reflected by the former Celtic man currently having an ownership of 11.2% in FPL, more than both Fonte (9%) and Bertrand (4.4%).
  • Southampton face three very appealing home fixtures over the opening five Gameweeks (WAT, SUN, SWA), affording Puel the perfect opportunity to get off to a strong start at St Mary’s. Although that is somewhat offset by the fact they also travel to both Man United and Arsenal, Van Dijk’s goal threat means he’s still more than capable of prevailing across those tricky pair of road trips.
  • While Van Dijk offers plenty of appeal due to his attacking threat and potential clean sheet points, the Dutch international also flourishes when it comes to the Bonus Point System (BPS). He gained 16 bonus points last term, fifth among defenders, and finished fourth at the back for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI), making him a particularly strong option for those plum home fixtures in which Southampton have historically thrived in.

    Forster. Jak
    Stones. Terry. Friend. Taylor. Evans
    Haz. Mahrez. Tadic. Townsend. Capoue
    Kun. Rooney. Long

Prob switch Tadic for Barkley week 2. More i look at Hull the more i want any body playing them .. hence Mahrez

As goes for anyone playing Sunderland - They have had a successful pre season but as of yet have failed to sign anyone. All respect though due to the Big Sam saga. I like the idea of Rooney, I guess your hoping he is not pushed out of the limelight by Ibra - depends where Jose plays him though, seems like an expensive midfielder if played there... My feeling with Tadic is that without Pelle he will get less assists but more goals as his importance will increase and becomes a more likely penalty taker. Stones is a risky option due to the Everton defensive record last year... Terry is too however with Zouma returning from long term injury he may keep his place. Forster in goal is a good option - there are plenty of 4.5 keeper steals though. I too have Townsend as my fourth midfielder, just hoping he can live up to the expectation and the price tag.

Overall team is well balanced: 8/10.

Only aquero as couldn't afford ibra, settled on 343 despite 352 seeming a good option in a season of great midfielders and expensive strikers. So until further events/transfers and the community shield this is my team.

    Butland - Jakupovic

Fuchs - Friend - Shaw - Evans- Lenihan

    Mahrez - Mkhi - Eriksen - Townsend - Fletcher

    Carroll - Aquero - Lukaku

Please rate this, give ideas and if you are also using a 343 team please could you maybe post your 5 defenders below as I am unsure about mine.

    Thanks

Depends who your other striker's are, and team. Though I'd say Eriksen initially

I toyed with the idea of Eriksen but I am staying away until Dembele is back. They're all great options when Spurs are playing well but I feel like they're a bit too risky to start with.

      1) Take the first letter of each name you say in order.

      2) Find the player whose name includes these letters

    Mannone Pickford
    Shaw Dann Mee McAuley Friend
    Townsend Deulofeu Willian Mahrez Gradel
    Aguero Ibra Gray
    £0.5ITB

With the moves below I can bring Haz in, worth it guys??

    Gradel>Fletcher
    Mee>Tarkowski
    Willian>Hazard

A quick question for those of you who are considering the 3-5-2 approach:
Are you going for a 4,5 or a 6,5 striker as you third option?

It still puts a smile on my face when I think of the managerial competition to come this season. The premier league is entering it's most competitive era so far without doubt. I can't bloody wait for it start!
I'm a liverpool fan (argyle home town team) and feel we could push for 3rd place this season, no higher due to our defensive issues. Interested to get other people's thoughts on liverpools chances this season?!
Be honest though please, no need to let your passion cloud your judgement.

Really tough to call.. think a mixture of managerial appointments and big signings in the transfer market pretty much nail the Manchester clubs in the top 4 spots.. Spurs i will throw into the mix next Wanyama will make them even tighter and expect Alli Kane Eriksen Dier etc to continue to improve.. Have to expect Arsenal to be there or there abouts as will Chelsea and Liverpool with no European distractions.. would maybe lean towards Chelsea at this moment rejuvenated Hazard could be key.. Arsenal have key areas still to address and while Liverpool have a fine manager their transfer activity has been rather underwhelming so far imo

utd have the players but jose's 4-2-3-1 won't work now, just like it didn't work at Chelsea. Utd to win 3 (bou/hul/bur) of their first 11, 5 at a stretch. not biased, honest opinion.

Really think that there is so much uncertainty over the quality of your defence and over the starting XI (how Klopp intends to fit all of your attacking threats into a balanced team) that I'd not commit to anything more than top 10.

There is so much more quality across the board in the league, it's as wide open as it's ever been.

I have Chelsea in with as much of a chance as City. I have United as a potential timebomb and envisage Spurs improving on last season. One thing is for certain, it's going to be great to watch.

    Filler options to consider

    Etienne Capoue (Watford, £4.5m)
    - Nailed on and seems to have a lot more freedom to roam in Watford's current 3-5-2 system. A popular pick.

    Ben Watson (Watford, £4.5m)
    - Set pieces, but may see a reduction in minutes if Watford decide to buy another CM, or give Guediora/ Suarez more gametime this season.

    Jordon Mutch (Crystal Palace, £4.5m)
    - Carries good goal threat, can be deployed out wide right or in CM as part of a double pivot. In a 3-5-2 he looks good at RWB, but Palace seem likely to play 4-2-3-1 with Cabaye coming into CM and Puncheon/ Townsend to play wide right.

    Jonathan Leko (West Brom, £4.5m)
    - Looks decent and highly spoke of by Pulis. His certainty of a start has question marks over it though; faces competition from McClean and possibly Brunt (depending on his role as a LB).

    Shaun Maloney (Hull, £4.5m)
    - Set pieces perhaps. Has started 4 of Hull's 6 preseason games and played well, notching a goal and two assists. Hull's injury crisis at the moment might deter a lot of people.

    Michael Kightly (Burnley, £4.5m)
    - Set pieces possibly. Another player with a good amount of minutes and form in preseason, but question marks over a start in the league. Started 3, subbed on in 2 of Burnley's 6 preseason games, and has a goal and assist to his name.

    Gareth Barry (Everton, £4.5m)
    - Just completed a run out in preseason recently after his return from injury. Could be the missing puzzle to Everton's defensive problems, but likely to give you no sparks or flair. Standard 2 points each week, with the odd card/ attacking return here and there.

    Romeu/ Hojbjerg (Southampton, £4.5m)
    - Puel has experimented with a diamond 4-4-2 throughout preseason and with the CM options available it makes sense. Tadic the furthest forward with Clasie and Ward-Prowse wider, and one of Romeu or Hojbjerg will play in holding in this system. Though in a 4-2-3-1 it could be risky going with either.

Feel free to add any more that I might have missed
