Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Virgil van Dijk

Having arrived at Southampton last summer with a reputation as a goal scoring defender, after netting nine times in two seasons at Celtic, Virgil van Dijk managed a respectable three strikes in 34 Premier League appearances as Saints secured a sixth place finish.

The Dutch international, who cost Southampton £13 million, impressed in his first season in England, forming a strong centre-back partnership with Jose Fonte, and, having settled at St. Mary’s, could be set for an even more productive campaign this time around.

The 25-year-old is an imposing figure, standing at six foot four inches tall, and, as is the case with the majority of Dutch footballers, is very strong technically, with the central defender confident when dribbling the ball, and also able to initiate attacks through his wide range of passing.

The fact that Van Dijk was handed a new six-year contract in May certainly illustrates the club’s faith in the former Groningen defender, so he’ll be expected to continue his development as a player over the coming years.

Key Factors

  • Van Dijk’s attacking statistics last season were pretty impressive across the board, finishing fifth among defenders for both penalty box touches (71), and shots on target (nine). He ended the campaign joint-eighth among defenders for total goal attempts, with 29, the same number as Crystal Palace’s Scott Dann, who netted five times in 2015/16. The Dutchman is particularly dominant in the air, having won 158 headers last term, 36 more than any other defender. His aerial presence should continue to be crucial at both ends of the pitch, then, and with Dusan Tadic looking nailed on under new Saints boss Claude Puel, Van Dijk should benefit from strong set-piece delivery in the final third. It’s worth noting he’s already found the back of the net during pre-season, scoring in Southampton’s 2-1 win against FC Twente.
  • Despite the changes in management, Southampton have registered 15, 15 and 12 clean sheets over the past three seasons, providing Fantasy managers with a reliable source of defensive returns. The early signs under Puel appear positive in that regard, having only conceded one goal in four matches thus far during pre-season, so Van Dijk should continue to offer a dual threat at either end of the pitch.
  • After finishing last season with 130 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), joint-tenth among defenders, Van Dijk has once again been valued at 5.5. That’s the same price as fellow Saints defenders Fonte and Ryan Bertrand, while Cedric Soares and Cuco Martina, who look set to battle it out for the right-back position once again, are available at 5.0 and 4.5 respectively. The Dutchman’s superior goal threat makes him the standout option, with his ability to shoot from long distance, be it from open play or a free-kick, also an added string to his bow. That’s reflected by the former Celtic man currently having an ownership of 11.2% in FPL, more than both Fonte (9%) and Bertrand (4.4%).
  • Southampton face three very appealing home fixtures over the opening five Gameweeks (WAT, SUN, SWA), affording Puel the perfect opportunity to get off to a strong start at St Mary’s. Although that is somewhat offset by the fact they also travel to both Man United and Arsenal, Van Dijk’s goal threat means he’s still more than capable of prevailing across those tricky pair of road trips.
  • While Van Dijk offers plenty of appeal due to his attacking threat and potential clean sheet points, the Dutch international also flourishes when it comes to the Bonus Point System (BPS). He gained 16 bonus points last term, fifth among defenders, and finished fourth at the back for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI), making him a particularly strong option for those plum home fixtures in which Southampton have historically thrived in.

    RMT

    Mandanda - Jakupovic
Baines - Dann - Stones (if City) - Pieters - Paredes
    Hazard - Mkhitaryan - Silva - Eriksen - Kightly
    Aguero - Gray - 6.0 or under

Attack is a bit lacking but I want to keep an expensive midfield as I will want Özil later and maybe Payet/Mahrez as well.

What formation will you play? You need a better 5th mid if playing 5. You cant get a decent plying forward for 6 or less.

        3-4-3 always.

        Alternative is this

        Mandanda - Jakupovic
Baines - Dann - Stones (if City) - Pieters - Paredes
        Hazard - Mkhitaryan - Bolasie - Eriksen - Kightly
        Aguero - Gray - Lukaku

I'd down grade Mkhi and upgrade Kightly. Make your 6.0 attacker a 6.5 and get Wilson/Long.

Tinkering and tinkering. So far settled on this:

    Courtois/4.0
    Baines/Shaw/Friend/Evans/Paredes
    Gradel/Eriksen/Mkhitaryan/Townsend/Feghouli
    Aguero/Ibra/Sakho (assuming he leaves WHU)

Him starting is enough for me really. Don't expect too much for 5.0 but he should live up to that price at least I think. I'll replace him with a 6.5 after GW 2 anyway.

For anyone who is interested ...I ran a cash league last year and I'm been asked if I want to run it again, as it was popular and I've been shown to be reliable, paying out right after the season ended.

Entry is only £10 and I'm hoping to get at least 30, which would see the top 4 paid out.

GK : Valdes in pole position
RB : Nsue has the shirt after strong pre-season
CB : Gibson a definite, but the other spot is up for grabs
LB : Friend is nailed on
CM : Clayton and De Roon look Boro's most likely pairing
RM : Adomah just leads the way
LM : Fischer's display at Villa puts him out in front
10 : Up for grabs until Ramirez's clearance comes through
ST : It's neck-and-neck between Rhodes and Negredo

Most people will shy away from it as VVD is 5.5, but with those away fixtures, pairing him with Kone for the first 7 GWs (perfect for those planning to wc in the 2nd international break) you get

    WAT, MID,SUN, EVE,SWA,CRY,WBA

    7 home games in 7

      • 11 Years

The only thing is that having a 5.5 defender on the bench is a waste.

I'd rather go Shaw/Terry and play him every week.

like I said, most people will baulk at the idea due to VVd's price

But I am playing Shaw every week already, in a 3 way with Boro I would be playing Friend every week (though if being played every week, maybe Ayala is worth the extra

I think I will have 5.5,5.5, 5.0 playing every week as it stands!

          Then a 4.5 reserve and 4.0 fodder.

Not sure. I would have thought a Cesc/Kante midfield is a bit light but some Chelsea fans seem to prefer it.

Either way though, I quite fancy Chelsea to do well this season with the players who underperformed last year seeing a resurgence. In that context, I prefer Cesc over Willian generally as he has a higher ceiling FPL-wise. Even a deeper role wouldn't overly worry me.

          Might just be me though.

Very nice. Not sure I'd start with Giroud as he is unlikely to play gw1, but then that does save you a transfer

    Draft 2.1

    Any comments/feedback appreciated

    Foster, Jaku
    Terry, Friend, Shaw, Sagna, Souare
    Hazard, Deulofeu, Ibe, Ayew, Fischer
    Aguero, Ibra, Gray

If Stones moves to City then I'll downgrade Sagna > Stones and upgrade Ibe

Just submitted my first community article. Hopefully it's not too much nonsense so it gets published and it helps someone.
