Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Andre Gray

As evidenced by the success of Grant Holt, Rickie Lambert, Charlie Austin, Jamie Vardy and Odion Ighalo over the past few years, the promoted clubs can often provide us with budget forwards that far outdo their favourable price tags.

After bagging 23 goals and eight assists in Burnley’s Championship winning season, Andre Gray has the potential to be the next one off the conveyor belt.

Signed by Sean Dyche last summer for a club-record fee of around £9 million, Gray has followed a similar path to the likes of Austin and Vardy by working his way through the lower leagues to make it to the top-flight.

Having played a part in 43% of the Clarets’ goals on their way to the Championship title, he looks worthy of serious consideration for our three-man frontlines.

  • Gray has wasted no time in announcing himself to Fantasy managers over the summer period by scoring eight times, including a weekend hat-trick at Rangers. The Premier League’s form forward over pre-season, he’s been both consistent and explosive and found the net in all five of his appearances. Despite a kind 6.5 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he’s shaping up to be a decent differential and is owned by just 10% so far.
  • Last season, Gray averaged a shot every 31.3 minutes, which was slightly better than Southampton’s Shane Long (34.9), who is currently the highest owned forward (15.2%) priced 6.5 and under in FPL. Elsewhere in this bracket, Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson was less impressive in this regard, averaging a shot every 48.2 minutes last term, with West Ham’s Andy Carroll (27.6), Southampton’s Charlie Austin (29.1) and Middlesbrough’s Alvaro Negredo (29.4) the quickest.
  • Gray also impresses in terms of goal conversion. He netted an eye-catching 21.1%of his opportunities in the previous season – superior to the similarly priced Carroll (16.1%), Long (15.6%) and Austin (12.5%), although Wilson did lead the way, with an impressive goal conversion rate of 29.4% last term, albeit from just 13 appearances. His prospects would be boosted if he’s afforded spot-kicks ahead of team-mate Sam Vokes – Gray took five last term, scoring four, though Vokes scored three when his strike partner was on the pitch. Certainly, this would justify the extra outlay comapred to Vokes’ cost of 6.0.
  • Compared to forwards at the other promoted clubs, Gray’s appeal is heightened by a security of starts – Dyche tends to favour consistency of selection and is unlikely to chop and change unnecessarily. The same can’t be said for either Middlesbrough or Hull right now. Aitor Karanka operates with a 4-2-3-1 formation, so while Negredo looks to be the first-choice striker, Jordan Rhodes seems likely to steal minutes off the Spaniard given the ‘Boro manager’s penchant for rotation. With last term’s top scorer Abel Hernandez linked with a move away, few FPL bosses will be prepared to invest in Hull’s attack right now until some sense of stability is restored.
  • Gray’s prospects are boosted by the fact that Burnley are the only team facing four home matches in the first six Gameweeks (SWA, LIV, che, HUL, lei, WAT), due to their Gameweek 2 fixture against Liverpool being reversed as the Reds put the finishing touches to their new Main Stand. The former Brentford forward looks to have the ideal platform to hit the ground running, then, with the fixtures against Swansea, Hull and Watford in particular looking very favourable.

Is Cazorla nailed on, when fit? Not asking for fpl, just in general

I think so, Wenger called him their "technical security" or something like that.. He sees him as his best conductor.

All depends on Xhaka imo. Cazorla was there to hold up play and make good long passes up the pitch, which worked as Coquelin would just give him the ball every time. However, I now see Coquelin and Xhaka working together as he offers the same as Cazorla (in that position) but with extra tackling/interception ability and would boss the game more.

But While Ozil is out gaining fitness, Cazorla is nailed.

Rate this draft please. I think my other draft is better but I'll see what other think of this one:

    Mandanda (Jakupovic)
Aina - Stones - Morgan (Smith - Lenihan)
De Bruyne - Hazard - Mahrez - Deulofeu - Fischer
    Aguero - Rooney (Diomande)

2 x 4.5 keepers or Forster and Jakupovic.

I have no other Southampton or Hull defence planned but if it were 2 x 4.5's I would probably be doubling up with some of my defenders sides

True. Which is why I mostly select keepers who have no ability to get clean sheets.

        Forster as he is 5.0.

Basically is it better to have the 5 plus a risky 4
or a 4.5 plus another 4.5 as it adds up the same

I think there are 4 standout 5.5 midfield options IMO:

    Gradel - Fischer - Ramirez - Feghouli

I've got Wilson & Payet so that kind of rules Gradel & Feghouli out for me because i don't want to double up on WHU or BOU.

That leaves Fischer & Ramirez (who has just come onto the scene to muddy the waters)

Who would you go for as a 4th mid out of:

    A) Fischer
    or
    B) Ramirez

Firmino should do well against an injured defence of Arsenal.
Negredo should start and subbed off only if he has a rough day.
VVD is proven goal scorer and baps magnet.
I feel I am satisfied from this lot.

Depends if you need the extra money by picking Deul.
Tadic more assured of starts at present.

    Why is nobody getting Willian?

    Conté's ideal player ...

I think the general consensus has been Hazard or Batshuiyi.

Hazard starts off slow and Batsh is unproven.

Hazard good in pre-season though, and easy downgrade. But then Haz->Will makes Ibra a shoe-in 🙂

Personally I am avoiding all Chelsea for the time being, I'm just repeating what I have seen over the past couple of weeks.

Completely different styles of play 🙂

This system should suit him far better.

Why? Presumably he'll have more defensive work to do in the 4-4-2 than he did in the 4-2-3-1.

Yep he probably will, but the whole team in general will be more defensive.
The CMs will be extremely defensive, and the onus to transition into attack will be on the two wingers.
Long direct balls up to Bats / Costa / Lukaku who will hold up play and then Willian / Hazard / Pedro / Cuadrado run onto the ball from a delayed run.

That's not how top teams play. That isn't how Conte plays.

Well that's me assuming he takes his style of play at Juve / Italy to Chelsea.. Isn't that how they used to play? With target men who don't score too often as they're in the team to bring others into play?

I could be wrong, I thought it was all about the ball being distributed from Bonucci / Chiellini up to a CF who would hold it up for one of Pogba or the two wingers to run past them, and if no pass was on, it would be played back to Pirlo who would then distribute it himself?

Target men yes and from deep , yes but this is breaking it tooo simple. Conte's is all about hard-work , discipline and organisation. Only after the play is built up to a point when long balls are considered....long balls are not just a ball to a target man. They are also about finding the angles and delivering the perfect throughball. Remember the Gia goal against Belgium or Hazard's two goals against RM?

a 442 will suit him better than a 4231? Maybe as a player , 442 is his best system but not as a Fantasy Asset.

4 premium-ish mids. Rate this draft please

Rate this draft please. I think my other draft is better but I'll see what other think of this one:

    Mandanda (Jakupovic)
Aina - Stones - Morgan (Smith - Lenihan)
    Hazard - Mahrez - Payet - Silva - Deulofeu
    Aguero - Gray (Diomande)

    RMT

Will change it but this is it for now. Midfield isn't amazing but could be some solid value plays

    Mandanda-Pickford
    Friend-Shaw-Azpil-Evans-Byram
    Ayew-Tadic-Deulo-Mhiky-hojbjerg
    Aguero-Ibra-Austin

I feel like I need another elite MID on my squad. I'm pretty much set on having Aguero and Ibra on my team though.

I haven't posted my side before but I think it is interesting. I plan on having 4 big guns who play every game and rotating pretty much everyone else. For a 4.5 rotation the defence works pretty well imo

    Forster - Jakupovic
    Pieters - Mee - Friend - Evans - Kone
    Hazard - Mahrez - Delofeu - Fischer - Redmond
    Aguero - Ibrahimovic - Gray

I am fully aware of the benching headache this will bring about.

          Hazard - Fischer
          Aguero - Ibrahimovic

Ok how about prepping a team for the first 4 GW's:

    Foster / Heaton
Azpil / Shaw / Ward / Friend (Lenihan)
Hazard / Willian / Redmond / Bolasie / Fischer or Ramirez
    Zlatan / Gray / Aguero
