The Stock Check – Gameweek 1 – Monday

Chelsea’s stars of 2014/15 rise to the occasion at Stamford Bridge as both Diego Costa and Eden Hazard deliver goals to earn Antonio Conte a victory in his first Premier League outing. Here’s the final Stock Check of Gameweek 1.

On the Rise

Eden Hazard
The Belgian’s spot-kick was hugely significant, not least because it saw Hazard deliver in Gameweek 1, but also because it appears to confirm him as Chelsea’s designated penalty taker. That’s something of a puzzle given that Oscar took one in pre-season with Hazard on the pitch. Now with penalties secured, Hazard’s stock, like that of Riyad Mahrez, has enjoyed a major boost.

Diego Costa
Owned by just 7% of FPL managers, Costa’s fine winning strike rolled us back to the 2014/15 campaign and offered a reminder of his clinical finishing ability. His future at Chelsea is far from assured but if he can hint at returning to his debut season strike rate, he may yet enter our thinking. However, an early booking and a reckless challenge on Adrian also demonstrated just why we have to show extreme caution.

Cesar Azpilicueta
The Spanish full-back has significantly improved his attacking game and is now offering just as much from the left as Branislav Ivanovic on the right. Unlike the Serb, Azpilicueta’s starting role has rarely come under question and with no rival for his position, he continues to stand out as the key option in Antonio Conte’s defence. Tonight’s assist and bonus only underlined that further.

James Collins
Slaven Bilic opted for the Welsh warhorse over Angelo Ogbonna, potentially unlocking a 4.5 option in West Ham’s backline. That already brought Collins to our attention, even before his dramatic blast from a West Ham corner. A start against AFC Bournemouth should be guaranteed but it remains if he can hold off Ogbonna in the long-term.

In Decline

Andre Ayew
The Ghanaian’s West Ham bow lasted just 34 minutes before he gave way with a thigh problem. That was a blow to his 9.5% ownership who must now wait anxiously to see if he can recover for Sunday’s potentially profitable meeting with the Bournemouth defence. With Payet a likely starter, Bilic won’t need to take a risk with his new signing.

Michail Antonio
Charged with containing Hazard, he was always in for a testing evening. Seemingly consigned to a right-back role with Bilic collecting options on the flanks, Antonio was hooked shortly after conceding the early second-half penalty. His start against AFC Bournemouth could be in doubt – his fragility against top class opponents certainly isn’t, nor is his reluctance to continue as a full-back.

Sofiane Feghouli
The 5.5 midfield option is another in the West Ham treatment room. He missed tonight’s encounter with a hamstring problem which materialised in training according to Bilic.

Oscar
We thought he was on spot-kicks, clearly he is not. That’s a major dent to his appeal and with Cesc Fabregas breathing down his neck, the Brazilian’s owners will rarely be able to rest easy.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Does this defense for next week look good?

    Stones Walker Amat

    Bench: Friend Shaw

Yes. As an opinion though feel defense is slightly expensive with Amat also now a starter.

I also think its a little expensive, but the way my team is set there are no decent options for me to upgrade to.

probably not, because there's a chance of a 1-1 with both of your players not doing anything and getting 2 points each. although if you feel it may pay off then go for it

Although I'm playing Friend over Amat and Evans this week as I think he has more of a chance of a CS than either of the two. Think we are underestimating Hull even after their brilliant showing last weekend.

I know. That is why I'm not sure. Don't fancy Gerard anymore since Bolasie has signed he could be a rotation risk and unlikely to start up front now that Lukaku is back, but I guess I could wait a week.

Hmm.. If u r planning to Wilcard early like after GW3 not sure losing points on transfers before that is a good idea. If not then can go for B). Personally feel Leicester and Arsenal seem to be little short on motivation

I'm waiting until further news on Ayew but right now as a Ibra Hazard and Aguero owner I'm going with Ibra (I don't know if you have him or not) I'm not going Aguero right now only because he has a CL game tomorrow, and i'm not going with Hazard because I'm always cautious of players playing at Watford because it hasn't been a very successful place for me in the past and I feel Ibra should do well on his home debut

Not many. Maybe the odd one goal like how they did beginning of last season. That way's get 2 FTs to go for Ibra for Hull game. What I meant by getting Ibra was I have a player in my team currently I can discard easily along with Vardy to get Ibra and someone else for a cost of -4.

A Bournemouth supporter posted pre-season that he is not the same player yet following his injury.

However, I am still scarred after selling him after he failed to score at home to Villa last season! So if I say keep him for one or two more games, the advice is somewhat tainted.

Hate having my midfield or strikers playing each my defenders.
So want to play Amat over Valencia and play Tadic and bench Valencia. What ye think. I think Southhampton will score and if they do Tadic more than likely involved.

I honestly don't get why so many are going to bench Shaw. Why would you have a 5,5 defender in your team, if you're gonna bench him at home in a decent match?

I agree. Shaw is the premium defender for my team as I am planning to play him for atleast 30 games. No point having him if u r not sure he will keep clean sheet against Soton at home. Can rather get a 4.5 defender instead and rotate him.

Normally I don't expect to be in a situation where I would be happy with starting all five of my defenders. Shaw actually plays the scariest offense out of them. BTW, Southampton had the most shots by far this weekend, so based on what we know (granted that isn't saying much, could have been poor WAT defense or just a flukey good game) he doesn't seem that desirable.

See above Valencia same situation. I bought him for attacking qualities as much as defensive. I will play him 90% of the time but gut says no this week.

Barely touched the ball, but Chelsea controlled the game. Not the right game to judge him, as the ball rarely got close to the Chelsea goal. He almost got a goal in injury time tho..

West Ham were poor. Carroll was up front alone and very isolated didn't get any service at all

He struggled, but mainly because West Ham were so deep. Didnt make any chances, but I dont it was his fault. Terry and especially Cahill caused him some trouble in the aerial duels so he never really dominated. And when Andy won it, there was never enough teammates around to build play and make chances. Dont worry though, v Bournemouth it will be a totally different game.

    Foster
    Stones Amat Shaw
    Firmino Routledge Martial Hazard
    Gray Aguero Vardy

    Bench: Jaku Friend Morgan Capoue

In two minds whether to play Friend over Stones. Other than that I'm fairly happy. Not making any transfers - or at least attempting to stay strong and not! I feel that 56 points was an acceptable start - something to build upon.
