Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 3

This morning we take a look at our latest captain poll, assessing the likely favourites for the armband in Gameweek 3.

You can find the poll in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We predicted that Sergio Aguero (13.1) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.6) would slug it out at the summit of the Gameweek 2 captain poll. They not only dominated voting but both excelled, bringing in a brace, maximum bonus and a 26-point Fantasy Premier League haul to those who chose to captain them.

We expect more of the same this Gameweek as Manchester City’s Aguero hosts a West Ham side that has looked disjointed due to injuries so far this campaign.

Meanwhile, the Manchester United frontman, who at 51% ownership has overtaken the 50.2% owned Aguero as FPL’s most popular player, visits a Hull side that have won both their opening fixtures. In the big Swede’s favour, the Tigers have conceding the third highest number of shots in the box of any Premier League side to date.

However, there could be a third protagonist to upset this duo’s dominance, with the 22.9% owned Eden Hazard (10.1) bringing in attacking points in both matches under Antonio Conte. The Chelsea wide man entertains a Burnley outfit that have conceded more shots than any side this season.

For those eyeing up a differential armband candidate, Southampton midfielders Dusan Tadic (7.4) and Nathan Redmond (6.1) look ideally placed. Although Tadic has yet to register attacking returns, his strong underlying statistics suggest that could change when Sunderland visit. The Serbian’s ownership in FPL is now down to just 4.6% after being discarded by more than 42,000 managers.

Nathan Redmond, who sits in 11% of FPL managers’ sides, has a goal to his name already and looks set to profit from his out of position striker role in this potentially prosperous encounter.

Ibrahimovic’s team mate Paul Pogba (8.5) offers another intriguing alternative armband option, following a strong debut in Gameweek 2 at home to Southampton.

After two matches without a goal, the 16.4% owned Harry Kane (11.0) will be lucky to register significant interest. The Spurs striker has continued to struggle in front of goal without the suspended Mousa Dembele in the side and, in Gameweek 2, his star waned further when he was forced into a number 10 role to accommodate Vincent Janssen (8.0), who was Tottenham’s most attacking player against Crystal Palace. Visitors Liverpool have already shipped five goals this season, but it could be the 1.9% owned Janssen who prospers rather than Kane.

Another of last season’s stars to fall out of favour this term is Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez, who has been jettisoned by 35,000 FPL managers already this Gameweek on the back of two relatively poor displays from last season’s champions. A home tie against Swansea, however, could be the ideal fixture for the 27.9% owned midfielder to prove he is worthy of a price hike to 9.5 this season.

Who is gonna everyone captain in GW 4 when there is Manchester derby, Arsenal against Southampton, Leicester against Liverpool, Chelsea away to Swansea who are solid at home (yeah, I know, Hull beat them)?

Hazard best bet, right? Or risk with Kun/Ibra and expect goal fest? Punt on Foster away to Bournemouth?

Yeah, seems like everybody gonna captain Ibra now and Aguero is under radar because of 'tough fixture'. In fact, WHU defence is pretty bad and Kun could easily score hattrick.

hazard is a good option. I'm not choosing kun/ibra.

Arsenal is the most likely team to win according to the odds, so Ozil would also be a good choice. Payet is also worth considering as they're playing watford at home

I'd ignore odds, United will win easily. Watford are pretty solid you know and what form has Payet?

Payet is class but I would not captain yet. Aguero would be my (C) choice he has a knack for scoring against ManU (everyone) if memory serves

week 4? man utd will win easily? You might be right, but I think it is quite risky.

The point is, there are no amazing captain choices in week 4. I think ozil is a much safer bet than kun/ibra.

Any chance we get to see new lineups? Maybe Pogba, Fellaini and another defensive midfielder instead of Rooney/Martial/Mata?

And what about man city? Will he play silva/de bruyne/nolito/sterling. I wouldn't be surprised to see a more defensive lineup. I expect a defensive game.

Guys what do I do, had a shocker and missed out on Haz price rise and now can't go Oscar and Firmino for Haz and Bolaise.
    Have 2FT and 0 money:
    Foster, Jaku
    Terry, Shaw, Stones, Friend, Amat
    Mahrez, Oscar, Firmino, Redmond, Capoue
    Aguero, Ibra, Gray

I'm keeping hold of Firmino for now, I think he'll come good (it's only been two game weeks after all). I'd be tempted to change Oscar to Lamela. This weekend's fixture for Spurs may not look great for FF, but thereafter they have a run of favourable fixtures. Would also give you 0.4 ITB for a rainy day.

How likely it is that price of Eriksen falls tonight? Atm gonna take Mirallas in his place but I would still want to wait some more time. Future transfer plans include Barkley to Özil so thats why I want Mirallas.

Other problem is Carroll. Rondon the best bet? I dont like Grays fixtures, have Redmond already and dont have enough money for Ned Greedo.

Not for a hit, Mahrez would then need to outscore him by 4 and surely Liverpool wont be as bad as they were against Burnley.

If you want Mahrez long-term then do it, but I wouldn't take a hit for just one gameweek.

Should I WC to get in Ibra today before his price rises? I can't see to get rid of Oka/Albri 🙁

    Forster (Heaton)

I would honestly much rather take a hit or two than waste my WC after two matches. It's ludicrous. Valencia could get dropped, Redmond might not score again, Lamela might turn out as unconvincing as he has been for years and then where are you? Take a -8 and save your WC. Srsly.

Not sure if you read the question properly before your anti-early-WC rant :p

You're right Redmond, Valencia & Lamela might not produce. Neither may Albri,Oka and Rooney.
These are all reasons to WC in Shaw, Ibra, Capoue, Jak etc before they all price rise multiple times?

Corners, most free kicks, and can score from open play (better goal scorer than Bolasie, Barkley & Del).

I see so many people advising against ditching Tadic before Sunderland, but this Sunderland is not the Sunderland of previous seasons. Moyes isn't a bumbling joke of a manager like Poyet. Sunderland may have lost their past two matches but they weren't embarrassed. If City didn't put five passed them, I don't see why people think a team as unconvincing like Southampton are going to be the ones that do.

They've lost the first two, one at home to a newly promoted side and Moyes admits they're in a 'relegation battle' two games in.

I think it's worth the risk keeping Tadic for this week.

      1. Teror

Narrowly lost both. One away against a team that is unlikely to finish lower than second. I think most people would've bet that Sunderland would be battling relegation early this season but that doesn't mean they'll be getting battered every week like Roberto Martinez's Wigan.

I mean, I've got no horse in this race: I dumped Tadic for a -4 to bring in Ibra on Friday, saving me 0.2 in the process, I just think people's reasoning is a bit superficial.

Small sample, but Saints are 5th in the league for mins per chance, (bearing in mind on of those games was United).

That frequency, versus a team with a very questionable centre back pairing, and the fact they're one of the worst in the league for conceded chances (so far), warrants at least one more week from Tadic and co i reckon.

Any thoughts on Routledge to Barry and Valdes to Hennessy?

I don't think Barry is worth a FT just cos he scored his first goal in 100 years.
Only if already WC'ing or needing to free up cash for must have player

It's more just to get Routledge out and Everton have favourable fixtures. Capoue is an option but arsenal and utd coming up

Why would you want to get Barry in? First goal in over two years and rarely makes assists either. Keep Routledge.

Essay time. Capoue has shot out of the blocks - and obviously the logic is that he will not sustain solid form, and is nothing more than a 5th midfielder having a spurt. His historical form and Watford's modest hopes for the season paint a certain picture. However, if we look at teams in similar positions to Watford - clubs hoping to miss out on the relegation scrap and aim for mid-table obscurity - Capoue's appeal grows markedly. Palace, Swansea, Bournemouth - all have players in the 'number 10 (ish)' role between 5.5 and 7.0m who the FFS community often consider role players. These are the ones who are often our fourth midfielder in a 3-4-3, or our fifth in a 3-5-2. Plus - they can be very valuable for rotation. Now, if we suddenly have a 4.5 midfielder in this role in offers much greater value for the rest of our team (especially with two must-have expensive strikers). It may all fall away into a stream of 1s and 2s, but if Capoue continues in a role bursting from deep he clearly offers a goal and assist threat. This could be vital to affording a third mid-tier to premium striker.

So I've got two long term injuries on my team already - Ayew and Andy "The Crock" Carroll. This leaves me with a bit of a dilemma and I'm on the verge of using my Wild Card. I'm trying to swap Vardy for Zlatan.

Do I drop Ayew for a cheaper mid and take the hit on swapping out Vardy or just go for it and play the wild card? I can worry about Carroll next week.

    My mids are

Capoue , Mane, Martial, Tadic, Townsend

With Capoue Form , Mane returning back from injury and townsend have great fixtures ahead.

Who should i swap for barkley ? with 1.0 iTB

The only mid I don't like there is Townsend. If Mané is going to be back, why don't you keep hold of these players? If you're keen to get Barkley in then do a straight swap with Mané.

I'd say Mane, just not liking Liverpools fixtures and townsend could get some assists with Benteke incoming

thanks, but Mane is already dropped to 0.1 and barkley rise to 7.6 , will it effect team value ?

Yeah. Following bandwagons early always helps to boost team value, but it's not vital for success. At this stage, missing one game like Mané has can cause people to sell. I would imagine that his price will go back up again though.

Take another punt on Musa this week? always looks dangerous...or get a 6.5m fwd in and bank the cash for another week? Firm, Ramirez, Tadic as replaceable mids..

Question 1 - If you know you're gonna WC the next day is advisable to burns your FTs to get 2 certain risers, just to have more cash to play with (granted of course some one you actually want to WC in isn't rising as well).

Question 2 - Does you retain any FTs after a wildcard? I'm guessing the answer is no and thus the answer to Q1 is yes and that made a mistake getting Lamela/Barkley in last night 😐

      1) You can use your WC straight away to catch double risers. No point using your FT for this plan.

      2) No FT's retained.
