Scout Notes – Champions League – Tuesday

Arsenal somehow manage to avoid a third consecutive Champions League opening defeat while Manchester City’s match (and the transport network) fall foul of the weather on a stormy night in every sense of the word.

Sanchez snatches point for Gunners

A 77th-minute strike from Alexis Sanchez (11.0) gave Arsenal a point they barely deserved from their Champions League opener in Paris.

Possession, attempts and shots on target stats might have been almost even, but the hosts were markedly the better side and should have won easily if not for their profligacy in front of goal.

The chief culprit was Edinson Cavani, who opened the scoring after just 42 seconds and then want on to waste three further chances as Arsenal struggled to find any rhythm throughout a torrid first half.

Arsene Wenger made three changes from the side that beat Southampton on Saturday, with Sanchez and Alex Iwobi (5.8) replacing Lucas Perez (8.5) and Theo Walcott (7.5), with the Chilean playing up front.

More surprisingly, Wenger opted for David Ospina (4.9) over Petr Cech (5.5) in goal. It was a purely tactical choice, the Frenchman insisted, which will be a relief for the 16.9% of Fantasy Premier League managers who own Cech – the third most popular keeper in the game.

“I have two world-class goalkeepers. I can give them both games. If they do not play, you can’t keep two world-class goalkeepers. But we have an in-house rule that the keepers know. It’s important to have clear rules like that. They know what the rules are for the season and, if they change, I’ll tell them. It’s down to performances whether he stays in the team but, on what he delivered tonight, David has the right to stay in the team for the next Champions League game.” – Arsene Wenger

Walcott’s omission, meanwhile, was precautionary for what Wenger described as a ‘very short term’ knee problem.

Arsenal, who looked porous at the back all night, improved after the break, but it took the introduction of Olivier Giroud (9.0) to change the course of the match. The move meant a return to the left flank for Sanchez and he thrived in that more familiar role, firing home a rebound from an Iwobi shot.

It’s two goals and as many assists in his last pair of starts now for Sanchez – he currently sits third in this week’s Captain Poll ahead of a trip to a Hull side that have conceded an attempt on goal every 4.6 minutes so far, quicker than any other side.

Giroud is yet to start a match this season, and he won’t be doing that in the Champions League any time soon having been sent off for a second bookable offence following a clash with Marco Verratti. That, conversely, could improve the striker’s domestic minutes if Wenger looks to rotate his squad for future European ties.

Arsenal XI: Ospina, Monreal, Koscielny, Mustafi, Bellerin, Coquelin (Xhaka 71), Ozil (Elneny 85), Cazorla, Oxlade-Chamberlain (Giroud 63), Iwobi, Sanchez.

Pep’s European bow washed away

Torrential rain and a lightning storm that struck down Manchester’s tram network put paid to Pep Guardiola’s first group stage match as City boss.

There was time, however, to at least announce the team, with a number of decisions giving some pointers ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Bournemouth.

As expected, Sergio Aguero (13.0) was given the nod up front but remains banned domestically, while the in-form Kevin De Bruyne (10.5) continued in midfield despite limping off towards the end of the Manchester derby with what the local press had reported as cramp through fatigue.

Guardiola went for Aleksandar Kolarov (5.9) and Pablo Zabaleta (4.9) as his full-backs, which could indicate that Bacary Sagna and Gael Clichy (both 5.4) are being lined up to start versus Bournemouth.

And Nolito (9.0) was replaced by Jesus Navas (6.4), again suggesting that the Celta Vigo signing is being preserved for a run at the Cherries.

The tie was re-scheduled to this evening, leaving City with just two full days to prepare for the Bournemouth fixture, and Guardiola might well shuffle his pack further as a result.

Man City XI: Bravo, Zabaleta, Otamendi, Stones, Kolarov, Fernandinho, Navas, De Bruyne, Silva, Sterling, Aguero.

It'll be interesting to see who starts today. Could well be Lamela because of his defensive work.

    Considering AOA this week:

    Foster
    Shaw / Azpi
    Hazard / Firmino / Cazorla / Lamela / Capoue
    Ibra / Benteke / Rondon

    Jaku / McAuley / Amat / Smith (4.0)

I hate the chip, and I can't really decide a front 8 because I'm getting a bit fed up of Capoue's points sitting on my bench! Thoughts?

I think I speak for the majority when I say, regardless of the risk, owning both Zlatan and Aguero limits your team too much given the wealth of options that it appears we have this season.
Furthermore, Aguero has to be the preferred option considering his experience and City's superior attacking threat.

    Without Ibra:

    Foster, Pickford
    Valencia, Walker, Koscielny, Baines, Holebas
    Mane, Bolasie, Payet, Snodgrass, Payet
    Aguero, Kane, Wilson

Personally, quality defence is an underrated quantity in FPL and the rest of this team doesn't suffer without the Swede.

The only issue is his massive ownership, its as simple as that.

You sure doubling up on Payet is wise?

I like your defence but unless you plan to play 4 at the back there is one too many heavy hitter in there and a benching head ache waiting to happen.

Too much money in defence. Are you playing 442?

Downgrade a defender, Antonio for Payet, upgrade Bolasie and Wilson.

My loyalty lies with Payet, Antonio seems a win/win but I still think Dimi is worth the extra cash long term. Payet will return every other game whilst Antonio relies solely on his goal threat. 4 headers, 4 goals is also a bit fishy, similar to Capoue's 3 half volleys on target, three scored.

You're right about the defence though, too much invested. I just find it very difficult to go without all four of Arsenal, Spurs, Everton and Man Utd given fixtures and defensive form.

The chat about Ibra is fairly mute when you consider you have opted for Kane who isn't much cheaper and therefore your team doesn't benefit for the extra funds that much anyway.

A team with Aguero/Kane is fairly similar to Aguero/Ibra

Agree with this given Kane's price. Forgot they were the same value but I think Kane will be very difficult to go without, just like Ibra.

Yeah I agree both will be difficult to go without but the argument for a team with Ibra limiting your overall squad is irrelevant if you're having Kane in your side.

Too true. I think I'm getting carried away with the excitement of actually having options this season. Sitting on Mahrez, Vardy, Ali, Kun, Kane and Bellerin all season definitely got boring last campaign.

Team, marks our of 10 to use two FT next week for Sterling & Ibra (out) to Aguero & Mane (in) so my front 7 reads:

    GW5
    Sterling (BOU)-Sanchez (hul)-Hazard (LIV)-Antonio (wba)-Capoue (mun)
    Ibra (wat)-Benteke (STO)

    GW6
    Mane (HUL)-Sanchez (CHE)-Hazard (ars)-Antonio (SOU)-Capoue (bur)
    Aguero (swa)-Benteke (sun)

then upgrade third striker (Long) with remaining cash to Rashford for Utd attacking cover when they face Stoke for

    GW7
    Mane (swa)-Sanchez (bur)-Hazard (hul)-Antonio (MID)-Capoue (BOU)
    Aguero (tot)-Rashford (STO)
    (bench: Benteke vs EVE)

Covering all "big team vs small team" points potential in the next 3 weeks, with exception of MUN vs lei in GW6

Haha that made me laugh 😉 Rationale is that Utd have (liv) and (che) afterwards, so Rashford affords exposure to (STO) without the cost crippling my team for the next two fixtures. Alternatively, I use a points hits to free up funds from Hazard (5.2/.3 replacement) for Ibra in place of Rashford

Very similar to the team I'm buidling towards.
I'd wildcard if waiting means you won't get team but I'd worry about goalkeeps as you could end up with none in a few gws.

        Yeah, this.

You'll get forced into downgrading someone to afford this anyway so you may as well get Foster or Heaton.

After how many GWs do the overall rankings become more stable?

I mean right now it seems like one good GW score can get you into top 5 K or even better

depends how fast a template team develops, once the majority settle on set of consistent scorers it becomes harder to find the differentials to beat the competition.

No particular week. Every season is different. Like last year was probably the most competitive FPL I have ever been involved in as 'casual' type players done well for a long time meaning more people stayed interested in the game.

Over last few seasons I have noticed a trend that with every passing GW, the leaders create a bigger gap over others.

One GW say your rank is 20K and you are 30 points behind the leader
Next GW it is likely that you may go up to 15K but the gap between you and leader becomes 35 or even 45 points

    hazard capoue redmond lamela firmino
    lukaku ibra
    heaton gray friend souare
1FT and 4.4 in the bank

    A) son instead of lamela
    B) iheanacho instead of gray
    C) baines instead of souare and play shaw stones baines and keep the team

    Heaton
    McAuley Valencia Stones
    Redmond Hazard Sanchez Firmino Capoue
    Ibra (c), Lukaku

    Bench: Valdes Gray Pieters Amat

Got 1 FT and 0.2 in the bank. so I can't afford a direct swap from gray to iheanacho.

Shall I keep or use the FT? Planning on wildcarding next week.

      1. Deeney is a decent punt, he hasn't looked great so far bar the last game, but could be good with their fixtures

    1FT, 0m ITB

    Foster
    Valencia Stones Evans (Friend Amat)
    Hazard Sanchez Barkley Lamela (Capoue)
    Zlatan Costa Gray

    Which move?
    (A) Barkley to Antonio
    (B) Friend to 4.5m defender (Holebas?)
    (C) Hold (probably pointless with WC next week)

If Cazorla rises, I am going to be .1 out.

        Here is my WC team,

        Foster / Jaku
        Baines / Stones / Valencia / Friend / Amat
        Hazard / Firm / Caz / Antonio / Cap
        Aguero / Luk / Benteke

        Options could be;

Foster to Heaton, though Heaton looks set to rise.
        Friend to Kingsley? Not ideal.
Keep Redmond and don't upgrade to Antonio.

Well, it's not the end of the world having Williams. Not sure how bappy he's been this season but he could outscore the mod.

Looks a good team though - only worry is the obvious lack of Ibra with frightening ownership.

I know, I've been over and over it in my head. I really don't like my team with him in it. In my opinion, it's Ibra or Aguero for me - and Aguero hands down wins.

I really won't be happy if I can't get Baines. Even considering putting Dawson in for Friend - he's 4.4 and out til Oct but he'll be straight in the side.

Great option. Pieters (yuck) or Kelly are the other options at 4.4.

Kelly would be the one for me.

I already have Pieters, he's getting the chop for Baines. He shouldn't drop to 4.4 before Friday.

Kelly is a good shout - may have to go down that route.

All this is hypothetical because I could get really lucky and Cazorla doesn't rise... Fingers crossed!
