The Pre-Match Preamble – Gameweek 5

This season just won’t allow us to settle.

From one Gameweek to another, our priorities are shifting with our plans forced back to the drawing board by new doubts and concerns.

The last campaign was testing but for a whole different reason.

It delivered the unexpected and some, including myself, took time to adjust to that being the norm.

We were found out by Leicester’s ascent, and it punished those who were slow to seize on the value offered by Dele Alli and Harry Kane.

Equally, when Eden Hazard flopped, and Mesut Ozil engaged his long grind of assists, some like myself, were taken by surprise.

But once you latched on to those trends, you could almost rest easy.

It felt like there were five, maybe six or seven slots in our team safely designated, leaving us to concentrate on managing the peripheral players around them according to form and fixture.

So far, this season is very different.

It feels like the stabilisers are off and, wobbling along from Gameweek to Gameweeek, we have to re-learn the real skill involved in Fantasy Football.

I don’t think we can yet bank on a set of consistent points scorers. Sergio Aguero aside, all bets are off elsewhere in our squad.

Eden Hazard has swung from near essential to disposable in a fortnight; even Zlatan Ibrahimovic will come under pressure should he blank on Sunday.

There is no comfort zone.

Each 0.1 feels precious, each transfer a significant opportunity to swap one midfield heavy hitter for another.

Loyalty and faith in players can pay off but the temptation to be fickle and act swiftly feels greater than ever.

In this week’s ScoutCast I discussed this very subject – the fact that I believe there’s a viable tactic in swapping heavy-hitters week to week, rather than settle them in and trade mid-price and budget assets.

Phillipe Coutinho, Riyad Mahrez, and Eden Hazard have already shown that we can expect runs of blanks and, usually, we’re quite happy to absorb them.

But with so much of our funds tied up in attack, can we afford to accept it? Can we expect to make up the shortfall for their failings by trading with sub 7.5 assets?

I suspect this season demands unparalleled flexibility, pushing us to explore the idea of trading big name midfielders in and out on a weekly basis, absorbing the price losses but attempting to exploit short-term form and fixtures.

It feels like we’ve been able to trundle for the last few seasons, relying heavily on a solid spine and making transfer decisions that influence our Gameweek tally, without threatening to make or break it.

But this feels different – this feels like there are constant risks and rewards to consider.

There’s a thrill to it – there is more excitement and expectation, but it also feels precarious and dangerous.

Like the day the stabilisers came off, I’m taking things steady but aware that, if I move too slowly, I may just come a cropper.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I wasn't aware that Everton was live until this morning.

Now I have to witness Lukaku potentially trolling me. Could be painful.

    Afternoon all...

So currently leaning towards bringing in the cheap midfielder in for Hazard or Sanchez and swapping Defoe to Lukaku. That means turning to Capoue for my fourth mid, but, given the fixtures, that kind of looks okay.

I'm seeing a few WC's going this way too.

Question is, Sanchez out with the 0.5 to boost my defence - provisionally opting for Stones - or just lose Hazard to ride out his tough fixtures.

I'll be sleeping on that tonight.

I would give Hazard another chance to be honest.

But I agree, it is too tempting to ditch a player of that price after a double blank with such other good ptions

Hard not to be tempted. Almost tempted on the consensus to rid of him, alone. But that's a psychological flaw....

2 goals and an assist across 5 games, returns in 3 of 5. Should've done better vs Swansea, and still a quality player.

Might favour outing Ozil today, ahead of him

Can't wait for the Troll to return to all those who captained him, including me, today.

If that happens, and given the quality of defending for the goals last week, I'd much rather keep Defoe...

I would go Haz out. Quite frankly, Sanchez to me looks the more likely to score of the two of them.

Have been looking at a big front 3 and Capoue 4th mid myself, something like:

      Heaton - Pickford
      Baines - Valencia - Holebas - Pieters - Amat
      Ozil - Firmino - Antonio - Capoue - 4.5
      Aguero - Ibra - Lukaku

This week is going to be a headache for finalising the wildcard!

Yeah, I saw - that's what I was referring to above.

I can actually go Haz out and a 4.4 to keep Sanchez which could be pretty powerful as a differential.

I would much prefer Ozil + 4.5 -> Cazorla + Snoddy/Pereya/Bolasie to give more flexibility. But if Ozil performs this is the team I'll probably WC to.

i think downgrading ibra to benteke or costa and having a better 5th mid (or promoting the 4.5 to someone who could be 4th mid) is a better tactic...

      Hazard out

You said it above , this is the season to switch around assets
Hazard had the bad fixtures for now so he's the one to lose . Can always get back once fixtures turn again

Even with Watford's fixtures? They're pretty exceptional and, arguably, Sanchez and Ibra/Aguero/Lukaku could easily combine to bridge the gap to those who can afford a 7.5 midfield option.

I'm having a big issue with midfield.

I don't particularly like the ones around 7m~ aside from Antonio. I think Cazorla will slow down as the penalties dry up and I don't like Lallana as a fantasy asset.

But then it's tough to get Ozil, KDB, Hazard and Sanchez as well as a big front 3. It's what's making me consider Capoue as 4th mid even though I'm not expecting a huge amount of points

Perhaps the way to think about is by comparing the mids and the forwards at the same price. I would rather Benteke and Defoe than any of the 7m mids, so the question becomes which premium attackers are most important to have.

I always try and build my team around 8 solid players and the rest differentials. Hazard is not a solid player in my opinion - was nil and void last night.

For me he is coming out, (To bring Kun and 5.0 mil mid in). I feel comfortable that over the next 4 fixtures Capoue will out perform him...........over the season to have a sub 5 mil midfielder (from a relegation favourite team), out perform a 10 mil midfielder (from a championship contender team), is unlikely. For now however, with 2 blanks in a row, he makes the decision quite easy.

This is not the season to carry a 10m player if you're not confident or going to captain him.

Ibra and Aguero mean the funds need to be spread and used wisely, Hazard and his fixtures seem an obvious reason to give him a breather until GW15, season keepers are so last year unless you're planning on captaining them like Ibra and Aguero IMO.

      Scary, though isn't it?

I know it's been like this before but, honestly, I can't remember it. It feels like we've been able to be a little too relaxed in previous seasons and play the odds.

Now it feels to do well; you have to think on your feet, not while resting on laurels.

Can't agree more. Although rather than scary I find it more exciting. It puts the skill back into the game, which means unlike last season we should see the gap between casual and experience players reestablish itself even with the introduction of chips.

This season will be all about playing the fixtures and price fluctuations to perfection rather than just getting a set of 'set and forget' premo's and hoping for the best.

The cat amongst the pigeons as they say. 😉

Have to disagree with Mark on this. There are more options, but let's be realistic, its been 4 weeks. How many of last season's norms were definites in 4 weeks? Even Vardy was still up for debate at this point.

I can see some sort of clear options settling by say gw8-10. The things which are causing much of a headache this season imo are the worth of any City or Liverpool mid when they will constantly rotate point hauls. Either stick with one long term or avoid all together. Bringing them in and out seems a bad strategy

Agree with this. I would just say that the rush to declare this the season of anything is a bit premature, just 4+ gameweeks into the season. We use our hindsight to say that the Leicester and Spurs value assets were so great because the season proved us right, but were the indicators and evidence already there a year ago?

Hi guys, what do you think of my WC team?
    Heaton - (Pickford)
    Valencia - Williams - McAuley - (Holebas - Amat)
    Hazard - Firmino - Antonio - Capoue - (Rodwell)
    Kun - Ibra - Lukaku
    Any suggestions appreciated?

    A. Hazard to Coutino
    B. Hazard to Mane

I am thinking to double up on Firmino and Mane / Coutino vs Hull at Home. Already have Firmino.
    Any thoughts on the same.

I think Defoe will offer better value than Lukaku over the next few say 10 weeks, good fixtures and on pens.

    Maybe I'm crazy

Agree. His next 4 are outstanding and next 8 only hold one bad attacking fixture

I'm gonna be patient and not knee jerk, my plan is to keep Defoe and Snodgrass in for the next 10 and not knee jerk them out, both good options and as they are cheap I think the secret is to be patient

        Hopefully no injuries for either

            Aguero-Costa-Defoe

Costa may go for Lukaku when he's about to be suspended but i think he will do well over the next 3 so I'll be sticking for now

Hazard to payet for free is good? I have Antonio but with the next three fixtures double wham could work well

Morning all. Hope today is a GREAT day for the FFS community.

After sleeping on it, I think the idea of a Pool double up in midfield is too tempting to pass up. Whether that's with Capoue as 4th and a big front three or a more balanced midfield and Deeney up front is still up for debate.

But one thing is certain; this is for me the most exciting wildcard week I can remember

    Hi all,

I asked this question earlier this morning my time so wouldn't mind asking again to get further opinions from you international friends who would have been fast asleep earlier.

As part of my Aguero back in plan I have the following options to pick from:

    A. Benteke, Snodgrass, Sanchez

    B. Lukaku, Cazorla, Arnuatovic

    C. Deeney, Sanchez, Bolasie

    D. Benteke, Ozil, Bolasie and 0.9mil to upgrade a 4.1 or 4.5mil defender

Please take a second to list your preferred option of it was your team?

    Your helps appreciated. 😉
