Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 7

We take our final look back at Gameweek 7, recognising the hap-hazard achievements of Arsenal’s goalscoring defender, acknowledging the tempting resilience of the Spurs backline while pondering if it’s time to re-align our squad spending.

The Player

Some would say that Laurent Koscielny was fortunate to have been credited with Arsenal’s winner on Sunday.

A clumsy cack-handed finish saw the Frenchman bundle Theo Walcott’s flick into the Burnley net, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain appearing to wade in by kicking Koscielny’s calf.
A farcical but vital goal.

Arsenal claimed the points with Koscielny awarded the maximum Fantasy Premier League bonus points. It was enough to ensure that the Gunners’ man is the first defender to figure as a Gameweek leading scorer with 15-points.

As a result, he’s also one of the first defenders to sustain a transfer bandwagon of any real significance.

Ranking sixth in the “transfers in” column heading into Gameweek 8, Koscielny has risen to 6.2 in value as FPL managers begin to switch their sights to consider big-ticket defenders.

Arsene Wenger’s rearguard has demonstrated extra steel, with the introduction of Shkodran Mustafi cited as a key factor.

While the German has gained plaudits, it’s Koscielny that’s attracting the FPL attention courtesy of his two goals – already putting him halfway to his best Premier League goalscoring tally achieved last season.

The top scoring FPL defender, Koscielny’s 11% ownership is closing the gap on team-mate Hector Bellerin – the Spaniard still retained by 25.6% of FPL managers.

The fixture list suggests there is more to come from both.

With Swansea City, Middlesbrough and Sunderland looming, Koscielny and the Arsenal defence will be expected to boast further returns before bracing for stiffening fixtures with Manchester United and Spurs.

The Team

Across North London, Spurs have made a statement.

Their victory over a previously perfect Manchester City has suddenly thrown things open. It’s paved the way for Mauricio Pochettino’s men to promote their title challenging credentials while leaving the door ajar for Arsenal and Liverpool to close the gap.

Spurs proved City’s vulnerabilities – exposing their questionable defending and the fact that Kevin De Bruyne is an almost irreparable component of their midfield.

But this is not about City – Spurs clearly have plenty to offer us.

Heung-min Son’s form has already been highlighted on these pages – his newfound spark has attracted thousands of new investors, hungry to pounce on the latest mid-price talent.

We’ve also acknowledged the performances of Dele Alli – seemingly re-energised by Son’s recent displays. He’ll continue to play second fiddle to the South Korean for now, but could be a factor on Harry Kane’s return, with Pochettino perhaps shuffling his attacking setup.

But it’s the Spurs defence providing the new temptation.

Just as Koscielny’s haul ensured his popped his head above the parapet, the Spurs defence clocked up his fourth clean sheet in seven on Sunday to earn further investment.

Kyle Walker continues to be the headline act. Now found in 35% of FPL squads, his price rise and ownership is beginning to bring new options into the equation.

Danny Rose tops the Spurs ranks with 6.5 points per game following Sunday’s assist and yet has been claimed by just 5.3% of FPL managers.

Jan Vertonghen is earning attention by virtue of his 5.6 price tag, with the 6.5 Toby Alderweireld gradually shedding owners, presumably to Walker amongst others, in every Gameweek thus far.

But the Belgian is arguably the class act on show – he has an eye for goal that can justify his price tag and should he drop to 6.4, he could yet provide good value.

However, with four away trips in the next six, this is arguably not the time to seize on the potential offered by Pochettino’s rearguard.

Like Arsenal’s defence, the most opportune window may arrive at Christmas, when, despite the busy schedule, both north London clubs are treated to softening fixtures.

The Talking Point

So will December offer the perfect window to re-align our squad spending, or should we take the lead offered by Koscienly and the Spurs defence now?

Certainly, the Frenchman’s 15-point tally reminded us of the value that can be gleaned from big-hitting defenders. If you can absorb some frustrating two-point returns, the big scores can follow and, in the mid-term, justify the spend.

While midfielders arguably remain the main target for our funds, Koscielny now averages 7.0 points per appearance – only Sergio Aguero amongst the forwards can better that.

Crucially, the Arsenal man has offered 6.9 points per million; his nearest rival within the ranks of forwards – Jermain Defoe (5.3) – would not even place in the top ten defenders for value.

Aguero as a consistent captaincy option perhaps remains a mainstay. Alongside him, the form of Romelu Lukaku and Diego Costa is difficult to ignore.

But the third striker spot is under pressure. The option of deploying 3-5-2 or even 4-4-2 and investing that extra million in defence looks all the more compelling after the events of Gameweek 7.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Who would you rather own?

    A) Heaton Vertonghen Mustafi
    B) Grant Walker Koscielny

It's a STO keeper vs BUR keeper really, BUR seem strong defensively at home yet there's more prospect of BAPs and attacking returns from option B perhaps?

    Cheers

It's hard to ditch Lukaku in the form he's in but I don't fancy 3 of his next 4 fixtures. Thinking Aguero Deeney Defoe and spending on some premium defenders could be the way to go

On wildcard my dilemma is basically.

    A) Own Walcott and son to go with sterling, firmino and capoue with Costa lukaku and aguero.

    Or

    B) Upgrade Walcott / son to Sanchez and go aguero, lukaku, deeney.

As all of those players are playing oop as strikers in real life, he's asking if you would play them if they were sold as fwds in fpl... or at least if it would change the 3 you're currently fielding.

Nope, holding and possibly captaining him if it sounds like Sanchez and Aguero arrive back late with the risk of limited mins.

The Liverpool defense is not the best and I want Lukaku as his replacement so can wait a week as away to City is not much better.

I have Sanchez, an Arsenal defender and will bring a Spurs defender in with my transfer so the need to spread his money around is not great for me this week plus it's GW8 right, magic happens!

Edit. The only person I would have lost him for this week is Costa but he plays twice for Spain than back for the early kick off against two centre backs who will push his buttons so I'm happy to keep Ibra and move him out next week if he flops again.

Yes -whilst I can't have enduring patience at his price, it's not like he's playing badly. He's getting the attempts on goal.

Over the 7 gameweeks he's not returning badly either, just badly for somebody priced at 11.5.

If he was 9m I doubt we'd be having so many of these conversations.

It's no different to 12 months ago when Aguero went 7 games without doing much, people lost faith and captained Mahrez.

I watched the midweek game and Aguero also did everything but score and his stats backed up that he was doing the right things but it just wasn't falling for him, sound like anyone we know?

If his stats had fallen off a cliff then he would have been gone on Sunday night but I also saw how easily Swansea opened Liverpool up, he can wait a week and I'll take the drop then make the correct decision with any replacement next week.

            Two differences for me:

Aguero scored something like 1 in 7 games and we know he score far more often than that. We don't really know what Ibra can output in Man Utd team at 35 years of age.

Aguero scored in 1 in 7, Ibra has 4 in 7. He may score at this rate for the rest of the season. It's not exactly bad, aside from Aguero/Kane/Costa we'd be happy with that from anybody else.

Also interestingly Aguero turned it around at this point but his underlying stats then got much worse. That's why underlying stats mean nothing.

I would compare Ibra to Pelle from last year. Amazing stats, scored 4 in the first 7. Still had great stats in the next 7 games, got 3 goals.

Most of us that still own him are not looking at the next 7 games, it's the next one while the other options/replacement's all have their own question marks.

You can't dismiss underlying stats, 2 years ago Tadic was a huge pick on here with big stats, last year Aguero had big stats, both exploded in GW8, if underlying stats are so worthless why are you on sites like this? Might as well play pin the tail on the donkey with how you chose your players.

Ok I exaggerated when I said they mean nothing. I do rate underlying stats, that's why I never played Capoue. That's why I sold him for a profit before he started blanking. Same reason for why I got Antonio in and have now sold him.

That said the number one predictor of future goals is past goals, no other statistic has a higher correlation. So all the shots on target, touches in the box and so on don't give me any hope that Ibra will turn it around in the short term.

That's a fair point but again I'd argue that last year it gave hope to people with Aguero, two years ago it made Tadic a bandwagon on here when he had not produced, both times they exploded, I'm not saying you should rely on them but I'm not sure you should dismiss them either.

Anyone who's watched United in the last two league games would have seen how much they created in both games, they are looking like they have goals in them now and only a wonder game from a keeper who will probably never do that again stopped them scoring another 4 or 5 last week.

I guess the warning signs are there for both camps, depends on which way you want to view them.

Safe to safe the opposition played a big part in the explosions. Sunderland lost 8-0 and Newcastle lost 6-1. Hard to compare Pool or Chelsea to those two.

I don't pay too much attention to previous results in games like this, who called Arsenal beating Chelsea 3 nil in another derby? Not many I'd guess.

    c. rashford > deeney
    d. save

    cech
    baines evans holebas

I'd downgrade Bolaise if you are not going to play him every week. With Snod fixtures you are probably going to play him. Spend the money on that defence.
      As to your question
A Rose. Better option than Walker soon to be .1 less and smaller ownership - good diff.

Cheers. Yup, need to sort out Bolasie soon. Probably over the next gw or two as not to keen to take a hit for that. Thoughts on Rashford's starting prospects? Want to keep him but all this talk of him being a rotation risk is unnerving.

Yeah you could lose Bolaise over time and sort the defence without hits if you got the patience.
Don't know on Rashford. Anything I say would be pure conjecture. I have him so hope he does start.

If I had Walcott I'd definitely consider it. I don't really have any great options myself.

Lukaku has an awful match and Aguero/Sanchez/Son may not play much.

      Bellerin it is!

I have Bellerin too. Thought crossed my mind but one goal goes in and its not great even if there was some sort of attacking return. Defender captain never worked for me before you got to get luck.

Had a look at your team . Nice but those 4 yellows must be disconcerting, they should all be ok for next week though. Interested you have Clyne so you think fixtures will win over form for pool defence? Tempted but gut just can't trust that defence

Yeah not worried about the yellows, I think they'll all come good for next week.

I do think Liverpool will keep come clean sheets. They have such a good long run its got to start at some point! Karius gives me hope.

Thanks. After Utd game fixtures are so good for rest of the year. Might take a punt on Clyne.
It comes down to a pool defender with awful form and good fixtures or Spurs defender with great form and horrible fixtures. Tha old nugget eh.

Flight times and time differences not good. For instance Sanchez game is at around midnight GMT 2-3 days before his Game. Unless I am mistaken he had reduced minutes after last international break.

Considering team value that is a nice team. I can't see any obvious suggestions for transfers that would lead to increased TV. I would stick and have 2FT for week after and see what you think then.

Yes, but as I said, prices are rising more often now.
Would have liked to upgrade a defender with the extra 0.5. Shaw isn't getting any gametime and Mou is looking less likely to play him when fit.
Also, after few weeks, would have to compromise on subs as bargain players' prices rise dramatically...

Do we think Son is nailed regardless of Kane?

    1. Ruth_NZ

      Obviously not.

"Nailed" is a peculiar concept anyway, especially in a CL team that has many options and a manager with a history of using rotation. Mostly "nailed" consists of the wishful thinking of FPL managers.

Son has been in great form and is doubtless 1st choice at the moment. But even that doesn't mean every PL game necessarily. Will he play 90 against WBA after games in Korea and Iran and 3 days before an important CL game against his old club? I somehow doubt that.

Any levelling off of his playing form and even his status as 1st choice could go. Alli has been rested this season. Son can certainly be.

None of that makes him a bad FPL pick of course. 😉
