Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 9

We round off coverage of Gameweek 9 with the regular digestible summary, embracing a Liverpool asset who has elevated his status, a City striker who has us questioning unwritten rules and a revitalised force in West London who may just provide us with new solutions.

The Player

When Philippe Coutinho fired a Gameweek 1 brace at Arsenal, sparking an early transfer bandwagon, the majority of seasoned Fantasy Football managers sat back and watched.

We’d seen enough of the silky Brazilian to recognise an ability to light up matches with his brilliance and, more importantly, a talent for the spectacular.

At the same time, we were more than hesitant to promote Coutinho to heavy-hitter status, let alone declare him as an essential component of our squads.

Since then, that scepticism has been somewhat justified.

Coutinho simmered following his 15-point haul, but was then derailed by international exertions that saw him restricted to a sub role for the 4-1 mauling of champions Leicester City.

That was enough to distract us – to have us focus attention on team-mates Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana.

Arguably, however, Coutinho has now done enough to drown out their claims and extinguish our concerns.

While Mane outscored him in Saturday’s against West Bromwich Albion, it was Coutinho who again picked up the maximum Fantasy Premier League bonus points as he inspired the Liverpool victory.

The 10-points lifted him within touching distance of Arsenal pairing Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott at the summit of the midfield standings, ahead of an extraordinary run of fixtures that hands him the platform to supersede the Gunners’ duo.

That schedule offers the ideal opportunity to abandon all doubts – even with another of Jurgen Klopp’s midfield installed, Coutinho as a second option, now looks an almost irresistible force.

Much as we’d like to look down on the swathes of managers who jumped on his potential back in Gameweek 1, contributing to his burgeoning 36% ownership, non-owners are now faced with acknowledging that their decision to become early adopters appears valid.

The Team

We expected a reaction to the Gameweek 6 drubbing at the hands of Arsenal but few would have anticipated what has followed.

Antonio Conte was emphatic with his changes following that 3-0 setback.

Amidst rumours and speculation of unrest, the Italian’s preferred three-man defence was installed.

The significance of the signing of Marcos Alonso, a capture that raised eyebrows, became clear as he was deployed as an forward-thinking left wing-back. Remarkably, the much-maligned Fantasy asset that is Victor Moses was stationed on the opposite flank.

The change has transformed Chelsea to likely also-rans to true top four contenders once again.

Three victories, three clean sheets and, crucially, Fantasy returns have flowed.

The 4-0 demolition of Manchester United was undoubtedly the finest hour, offering confirmation that we need to re-assess the Stamford Bridge offerings.

Conte’s system has expanded our options.

Eden Hazard assumes top billing along with Diego Costa, both timing their continued ascent to coincide with mounting doubts on the funds tied up in Sergio Aguero.

But Chelsea’s prospects may not end with those two former heavy-hitters.

The aforementioned Alonso is rapidly pushing for top bracket consideration in defence, while even N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic have been transformed from non-scoring bench fodder, to genuinely profitable budget midfield options.

A string of testing fixtures for the month ahead may dampen our enthusiasm for now.

But navigate the forthcoming spell successfully, with Fantasy potential intact, and Chelsea’s new revived cast of assets can present profitable targets for the Christmas period.

The Talking Point

We’ve never really had doubts on Sergio Aguero.

When he’s fit, he sits at the top of our priority list – comforting those who have him in their squad, stalking those who dare to ignore him.

A timebomb of points potential, we’ve learned to grin and bear the brief lulls in his output, safe in the knowledge that an explosion of points is imminent. He rarely disappoints.

But now a series of events have chained together to stir up new concerns.

Words swapped between the player and manager Pep Guardiola appear to suggest that Aguero is being dragged from his comfort zone.

It seems that the striker is being tasked with closing down defenders, switching his priority from waiting to spring the last man, to shutting down the opponent and winning back possession.

The City manager made no qualms about dropping Aguero to the bench in Barcelona – adamant that he could not fulfil his tactical vision for that match.

Suddenly, we can’t be certain on Aguero’s pitch time.

A second leg with Barcelona and another international break beckon – factors that could influence Aguero’s minutes for Premier League fixtures that, ordinarily, would appear profitable encounters for his owners.

With just two points from his last three Gameweeks, can we really go to Aguero with the armband?

If not, then surely his lofty price tag becomes a liability in a FPL landscape that appears to be promoting a five-man midfield, comprised of double-figure scoring big-hitters?

These questions and concerns are currently circling, praying on our minds and leading us to consider a potential exit plan.

Over 40,000 at the time of writing have already shown Aguero to the door. The rest of us will wait on his Gameweek 10 performance at West Bromwich Albion, willing him to show us enough to calm matters.

We have enjoyed five seasons which have seen the Argentine stand out as an almost unshakable Fantasy asset – stalled only by a string of injury doubts.

The fact that we’re now questioning the merits of a fully-fit Aguero demonstrates another twist in what has become the most testing of Fantasy campaigns.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

They're against Hull. That's reason enough for a treble up. I wouldn't transfer in a Watford player if you already have two, but the fact you already have three means I'd say go for a treble.

As a Holebas owner I endorse him highly.

Dann - good on set pieces, less so on clean sheets. Fixture proof it seems though.

          Alonso - more pricey.

I'd say Holebas short term, but all have strengths.

It's OK, I have Collins too - he'll leave soon. Maybe next week for a hit as tough game for my other defenders next week.

But if you're looking at Antonio, Snodgrass & Collins out v soon, make sure you pick someone for 3-5 GWs - as you don't want a short term punt that you're stuck with and have to play

With Snodgrass out, I need to make a change. I'm happy with the majority of my team but have 0 ITB. Luckily I have 2 FTs to find some money elsewhere if I wanted to upgrade on Snodgrass.

    A. Snodgrass to Stanislas (if fit);
    B. Snodgrass to Allen; or
    C. Cech and Snodgrass to Forster and Redmond?

    I already have Koscielny.

If HULL are really that bad and guaranteed to concede a few you could go like this for the next 6 gameweeks:

Remember a few years ago employing this tactic against Wolves when they tanked out of the league. And Villa last year. Worked overall as long as you're happy with the rest of your team.

Obviously from that list Negredo aint scoring because Boro now hate goals.

Chadli has horrid next two, but then the fun begins. I'm definitely getting him in in 2 weeks time.

Between now and then? Shaqiri gives you two good fixtures, Redmond and Bolasie give you one (but play slightly more advanced positions). Go with your gut on that one.

      But Chadli longer term methinks.

Everyone has different views on Aguero. It really is your call. I'm keeping for the next lovely run of games (unless he's benched). History has showed us that he scores at will when playing, so I trust him to get back to that.

I've been holding Slimani for the run of easy fixtures he has starting next GW - I could sell him, but like you say if Aguero doesn't get starts then Slimani could easily outscore him. Selling Aguero is more a psychological problem

Slimani big differential. But just worry he'll be benched ahead of Champions League.

This place is pretty horrid for Aguero decision making - people very extreme on both sides. He's been the best FFS player by some distance over the last few years, but he's out of form and there's worries over if Pep likes him - the answer no one knows is if it's a long term issue or he scores 3 on the weekend and we all forget about this hump.

As you say psychological problem. You'll feel great if you make the right decision, a mug if you don't.

          Classic fantasy football.

Swapping in and out Liverpool midfielders will send you one way - madness. I'd double up on Liverpool if you're swaying for a move.

This could be Firmino's week, next Mane, then Lallana, then Cout, then Wij etc etc etc, chasing last week's points probably wont work too well

I would look at other areas of the team if you don't want to burn a FT, maybe do a GK swap or something.

Firm and Cout will score very similarly over the course of the season so I would just stick with what you have. Payet looks a good option too but his fixtures are horrible, he is possibly fixture proof though.

If you absolutely have to then C but I would use one FT on some non essential improvements and save ready to double when you need to

sanchez payet firmino allen ( snodgrass )

yeah I see that team is pretty solid,

I would be unsure about keeping Snoddy but whoever you swap him for would really just be to bank any price rises.

    Thoughts on this plan:

Play AOA as Capoue faces Hull at home

    Heaton
    Lovren – Holebas
Sanchez (vc) – Wally – Firmino – Arnie – Capoue
    Aguero – Lukaku – Deeney ©

Bench: Baines – Robertson – Amat

    saves my FT this week.
Then I have 2 FTs for the next week, in order to re-arrange defenders (Baines & Robertson)

    Thoughts on this idea..?

What's the general consensus on Capoue? Seems like his ship has sailed.

I bought him at 4.5 so am considering shipping now at 5.2 to buy a 4.4 fifth mid (probably Fletcher) so I can upgrade my defence a bit, do you think that's wise?

You have no rush to sell Capoue this week.

Hull at home, either as a starter or 1st sub.

You can even absorb another 0.1m drop in his price from 5.2 to 5.1 (if it should happen) without it affecting your selling price of 4.8 as you bought at 4.5.

        • 7 Years

This season, 6 weeks out of 9 I have had defenders out score my captain choice, sometimes more than one defender and if like last week my top 4 scorers were my defensive unit (Grant, Bellerin, Pieters and Holebas) and then MacAuley on the bench would have been as well.

It is a maverick move to captain a defender but to say never do it? also Holebas is OOP

Don't have two yet mate. This will be over the next 2-3GW (I am bringing Butland in too after the break).

I don't disagree with Mane in principle but then I would have Sanchez, Walcott AND Mane and Firmino. If both teams do poorly one week, so will my team (which is a reocurring theme in recent weeks).

Allen is cheaper and seems to be playing at number 10. Arnie is all on last years form where he was a cheap beast. Shaqiri a player who does well in short spells it seems, often subbed off and injury prone. He's a good option at that price for sure, but other two have merits too.
