Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 9

We round off coverage of Gameweek 9 with the regular digestible summary, embracing a Liverpool asset who has elevated his status, a City striker who has us questioning unwritten rules and a revitalised force in West London who may just provide us with new solutions.

The Player

When Philippe Coutinho fired a Gameweek 1 brace at Arsenal, sparking an early transfer bandwagon, the majority of seasoned Fantasy Football managers sat back and watched.

We’d seen enough of the silky Brazilian to recognise an ability to light up matches with his brilliance and, more importantly, a talent for the spectacular.

At the same time, we were more than hesitant to promote Coutinho to heavy-hitter status, let alone declare him as an essential component of our squads.

Since then, that scepticism has been somewhat justified.

Coutinho simmered following his 15-point haul, but was then derailed by international exertions that saw him restricted to a sub role for the 4-1 mauling of champions Leicester City.

That was enough to distract us – to have us focus attention on team-mates Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana.

Arguably, however, Coutinho has now done enough to drown out their claims and extinguish our concerns.

While Mane outscored him in Saturday’s against West Bromwich Albion, it was Coutinho who again picked up the maximum Fantasy Premier League bonus points as he inspired the Liverpool victory.

The 10-points lifted him within touching distance of Arsenal pairing Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott at the summit of the midfield standings, ahead of an extraordinary run of fixtures that hands him the platform to supersede the Gunners’ duo.

That schedule offers the ideal opportunity to abandon all doubts – even with another of Jurgen Klopp’s midfield installed, Coutinho as a second option, now looks an almost irresistible force.

Much as we’d like to look down on the swathes of managers who jumped on his potential back in Gameweek 1, contributing to his burgeoning 36% ownership, non-owners are now faced with acknowledging that their decision to become early adopters appears valid.

The Team

We expected a reaction to the Gameweek 6 drubbing at the hands of Arsenal but few would have anticipated what has followed.

Antonio Conte was emphatic with his changes following that 3-0 setback.

Amidst rumours and speculation of unrest, the Italian’s preferred three-man defence was installed.

The significance of the signing of Marcos Alonso, a capture that raised eyebrows, became clear as he was deployed as an forward-thinking left wing-back. Remarkably, the much-maligned Fantasy asset that is Victor Moses was stationed on the opposite flank.

The change has transformed Chelsea to likely also-rans to true top four contenders once again.

Three victories, three clean sheets and, crucially, Fantasy returns have flowed.

The 4-0 demolition of Manchester United was undoubtedly the finest hour, offering confirmation that we need to re-assess the Stamford Bridge offerings.

Conte’s system has expanded our options.

Eden Hazard assumes top billing along with Diego Costa, both timing their continued ascent to coincide with mounting doubts on the funds tied up in Sergio Aguero.

But Chelsea’s prospects may not end with those two former heavy-hitters.

The aforementioned Alonso is rapidly pushing for top bracket consideration in defence, while even N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic have been transformed from non-scoring bench fodder, to genuinely profitable budget midfield options.

A string of testing fixtures for the month ahead may dampen our enthusiasm for now.

But navigate the forthcoming spell successfully, with Fantasy potential intact, and Chelsea’s new revived cast of assets can present profitable targets for the Christmas period.

The Talking Point

We’ve never really had doubts on Sergio Aguero.

When he’s fit, he sits at the top of our priority list – comforting those who have him in their squad, stalking those who dare to ignore him.

A timebomb of points potential, we’ve learned to grin and bear the brief lulls in his output, safe in the knowledge that an explosion of points is imminent. He rarely disappoints.

But now a series of events have chained together to stir up new concerns.

Words swapped between the player and manager Pep Guardiola appear to suggest that Aguero is being dragged from his comfort zone.

It seems that the striker is being tasked with closing down defenders, switching his priority from waiting to spring the last man, to shutting down the opponent and winning back possession.

The City manager made no qualms about dropping Aguero to the bench in Barcelona – adamant that he could not fulfil his tactical vision for that match.

Suddenly, we can’t be certain on Aguero’s pitch time.

A second leg with Barcelona and another international break beckon – factors that could influence Aguero’s minutes for Premier League fixtures that, ordinarily, would appear profitable encounters for his owners.

With just two points from his last three Gameweeks, can we really go to Aguero with the armband?

If not, then surely his lofty price tag becomes a liability in a FPL landscape that appears to be promoting a five-man midfield, comprised of double-figure scoring big-hitters?

These questions and concerns are currently circling, praying on our minds and leading us to consider a potential exit plan.

Over 40,000 at the time of writing have already shown Aguero to the door. The rest of us will wait on his Gameweek 10 performance at West Bromwich Albion, willing him to show us enough to calm matters.

We have enjoyed five seasons which have seen the Argentine stand out as an almost unshakable Fantasy asset – stalled only by a string of injury doubts.

The fact that we’re now questioning the merits of a fully-fit Aguero demonstrates another twist in what has become the most testing of Fantasy campaigns.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I like Chadli but some will be put off by the city fixture.

I personally think he could easily return points against city and beyond, and he's on pens. Hard to find better at his price.

Stoke played the 2 worst teams in the league and kept a CS. Cant see that continuing but a 4.4 def is appealing. Personally, I have my eyes on Fuchs and Cedric when he is fit.

Is it just me or is anyone else having difficulty “getting into” FF this year?
This is my tenth year playing now, and I’ve loved playing it every year, and have never been one to pack it in after GW 4 or even Christmas, always seeing crap seasons through to the end.
I'm doing decent enough so far, nothing special, but I’m finding it really difficult to actually enjoy playing it this year.

Is anyone else feeling the same, or felt the same way in previous seasons?

I feel the same. It has nothing to do with my crap rank, more with the fact i can't be bothered or phased when I do bad. It's never been like this for me in 10yrs. Strangely enough I'm close to the top of a main h2h league with a bit of money involved. A first for me who always concentrated on overall rank.

I'm the same, I'm doing okay in a couple of money leagues this year, but just can't find the motivation to actually care.

Maybe it's just because I've been playing for so long and it's becoming repetitive perhaps. I don't know, hope it passes.

Having only scored a best of 60 points in a gw this season I'm finding it tough going. Trying to make a big decision this season is harder coz so many good players about. Like now iv 2fts and want/need coutinho but reluctant to get rid of sterling yet.
Seems this way all season for me anyway.

Yeah can't seem many teams keeping clean sheets this season anyway while your here would it be worth doing a -4 hit on Antonio don't have faith in him anymore to get points and if so who would get for him? I'm thinking Chadli or Redmond?

I would move him on, his stats are way down since his position change to 'wing-back' and, in general, City aren't performing as well.

Is it time to cash in on capoue? Had him from day one never played him and probably won't 0.4 mill to be made if I swap for Fletcher could come in very handy watcha reckon

Good move as Capoue's price is only going down and being left redundant on the bench. I cashed in on him to upgrade Antonio to Walcott a couple of weeks ago.

          Greetings chaps!

Who to bring in as my replacement for Antonio?

          My team as it stands;

          Adrian // (Jaku)

          Koscielny // Daniels // Kingsley // (Mee) // (McAuley)

          Mane // Lallana // Sanchez // Alli // Antonio

          Aguero // Rashford // (Dio)

I have 1 transfer and a total of £7.2 to spend when replacing the West Ham man?

Willian/Pedro – All a bit up in the air as to which of these two will play!
Taddy Daddy – No form and tough upcoming fixtures
Arnie – Decent fixtures, but on 4 bookings
          Shaqiri – Inconsistent goal scorer
Siggy – Swansea are out of form, and Siggy was shunted to the left wing last time out
Chadli – Does have some appealing fixtures on the horizon, but plays City next
Wilshere – Good fixtures and playing for a form side, but it's Wilshere and will most likely be injured soon.
Redmond – 3 out of the next 4 at home, but against the best sides in the league… still might be a good shout
Chamberlain/Iwobi – No idea which of these will get the nod

          ...any thoughts, suggestions, recommendations?

Makes me laugh at people saying they dont enjoy ff anymore / this season. Then they post on the biggest fpl fan site in the world! You wouldnt be on here if you didnt have even a small amount of love for it still. What we havent had yet this season is a crazy gw8 which usually raises the excitment levels to new heights& gets people back into the swing. It will come and for me, into the new year is where the cream always rise back to the top.

Agree with both of you. It just takes one big gameweek. Thats what keeps me interested. I was 250 points down in my mini league 3 seasons ago with 14 games left. Won it by 50 points. It was the best fun as I had nothing to lose.

          Good day one and all!

How's it going? Been out of the loop most of the last week. Looks like I've lost another 0.3m on Antonio and Ibra combined.

I definitely want rid of the former and really Ibra needs to go to even against Burnley (h). Only have 0.2m in the bank so could keep Ibra and sell Antonio for Lallana or is there a higher priced mid I should be looking at?

Sterling looks like he may need to go to....Other mids = Walcott / Firmino / Capoue.

Have Baines too but I think I can survive with him in my team another week. 2 FTs

Doh. Of course. They Lalallaana it is then. I think he is just as likely to score point as the other 3 amigos.

Don't get rid of Ibra this week, would potentially captain him.

Coutinho is the Liv mid you would want if possible! Maybe via a Capoue downgrade.

I also have Antonio, Ibra and Baines. So much lost value this week 🙁

Have two transfers and personally doing Aguero and Antonio to Austin and KDB/Coutinho. I've kept Ibra this long, i'm gonna stick with him. Have defensive cover so Baines isn't a worry right now. Would probably do Antonio to Lallana in your position.

Not sure I can go back to Redmond!

I was thinking Ibra to Lukaku though. Maybe bring in Mane or Coutinho and do Baines to Alonso.

              Hazard back on radars eh...

I thought i'd give you some against the grain transfers. Redmond's stats are great and he actually has some really good fixtures too. Hazard the same situation bit I can understand if you want to go safe.

Why do you feel that Sterling has to go? I know his returns haven't been impressive of late, but according to squawka, his key passes and chances created have been stable throughout the season. Surely the fixtures would make you expect returns over the coming weeks?

It seems just wrong to ship Zlatan ahead of Burnley, but I'm not sure that I would go for Lallana ahead of Coutinho. Don't you have other areas in your team where you could free up the cash with that second trade?

Anyone else think bringing Coutinho in now ahead of the international break is too risky. Or do I need to live a little, this game is about the short term?

It's either that or keep Son.
