Hall of Fame Analysis – Part One

The break from Premier League action has handed us the opportunity to take a look at the latest standings in our Live Hall of Fame.

This ranking system is applied to everyone who takes part in our Fantasy Premier League mini-leagues – both the free and members league. Managers’ performances over the seasons are then traced to give a Hall of Fame rating.

This first article in a two-part analysis will take a close look at the histories and strategies deployed by those leading the current live HoF rankings. This has been updated to take into account Gameweek 11 and can be viewed by Members via this link.

The second part will focus in more detail on the players they have drafted and reveal the HoF leaders’ template.

If you would like to know more about the Hall of Fame we have included a quick guide in this article. Alternatively, you can view this movie to listen to Mark and Rate My Team’s Chris Atkinson talk you through it.

The career version, which shows the standings at the end of each season, is free to view here or via the HoF tab on the home page.

Live Hall of Fame Top 10

There is no shifting long time leader Ville Ronka from the HoF summit.

The Finnish manager is ranked 64,886 this season but his FPL history suggests he will be climbing far higher by Gameweek 38 to once again top the ratings. His lowest finish was 4,668th in 2012/13 and highest 90th in the following campaign, across a nine-season career that has included four top 1,000 finishes.

This term has seen Ville once again adopt tried and tested tactics of avoiding hits, saving transfers to enable him to take two at a time, and keep a close eye on the transfer market to hop onto successful bandwagons. A fruitful Gameweek 4 wildcard, where he moved from a season low 530,027 to 295,498 heralded a steady climb into the top 100,000. As with all our top ten, his Bench Boost and Triple Captain chips are in intact, with the latter two likely to be saved for double Gameweeks.

Currently, he has just one Liverpool player, Roberto Firmino, in a midfield that also includes Alexis Sanchez, Joe Allen, Darren Fletcher and Raheem Sterling. With just 0.7 in the bank it remains to be seen whether he will look to recruit the latest popular bandwagon Eden Hazard in time for the next Gameweek. It is possible that the potentially injured Sanchez could be ditched.

Matthew Jones (aka MJ6987), has climbed from 10th in the live HoF to second and is now 3,521th in the overall FPL rankings. A great start, in which he gained a Gameweek 1 rank of 10,062 has been key to his stellar campaign.

A Gameweek 6 wildcard helped too. This saw him avert a slide, which saw him finish the previous Gameweek with a rank of 72,681, and cement a top 10,000 rank from Gameweek 7 onwards. He looks well on course to notch a third top 1,000 finish.

As with Ville Ronka, Matthew has yet to take a hit this season, although he has made an early transfer leaving 1.2 in the bank. This indicates Sanchez has been jettisoned for Eden Hazard, to slot into a midfield that already includes both Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho.

Another climber is Jay Egersdoff, who moves from 15th to third after reaching 3,298th in the overall FPL rankings. A Gameweek 6 wildcard saw him rise from 44,965th to 12,177th and stay in the top 10,000 from the following Gameweek. A five-man midfield, of Stoke’s Joe Allen, Arsenal’s Sanchez and Theo Walcott, Liverpool duo Coutinho and Firmino, supplemented by Hull’s Adama Diomande as a third striker, has also been key to his success.

With ten seasons under his belt already, seven of which ended in the top 5,000, he has the pedigree to maintain this form.

Marlen Rattiner’s FPL rank of 41,539th has seen him fall from second at the end of last season to fourth in the latest HoF standings. His Gameweek 6 wildcard proved less successful than those above him, seeing him slide from 41,135th to 61,093rd. Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson’s Gameweek 11 absence also let him down recently, although his doubling up on Firmino and Coutinho helped avert disaster. A fourth top 1,000 finish in this, his ninth season, is still well within reach.

Dipping to fifth from third is Peter Kouwenberg who has an overall FPL rank of 47,279, his second stint inside the top 100,000 in a topsy-turvy season that saw him reach a low of 267,598 in Gameweek 2. A Gameweek 4 wildcard proved less than successful seeing him rise 50,000 places initially, only to slide back outside the top 200,000 within three Gameweeks. He has taken eight hits already, including one this week. Could he be another that has moved early for Hazard?

Bruce Savage is our third highest climber, moving from 19th to sixth place in the HoF, after reaching an impressive 3,827th in the FPL rankings. He is another who used his wildcard in Gameweek 6 to good effect, climbing 200,000 places and then staying within the top 10,000 shortly afterwards. His tactic of opting for a premium frontline of Sergio Aguero, Romelu Lukaku and Diego Costa is clearly paying dividends in this latest campaign which forms part of an 11-season career that includes three top 1,000 finishes.

Slipping from fifth to seventh is David Meechan, who has nine seasons under his belt including two top 1,000 finishes. A fall to 286,560th in the overall FPL rankings saw David join the Gameweek 6 wildcard club, which helped him climb more than 200,000 places. Now ranked at 26,607 he has just taken his second hit of the season, indicating that he may well be another to have jumped aboard the Hazard bandwagon before the Belgian’s double price rise this week.

Sir Edo Nygren’s sensational ascent, from 66th in the HoF rankings at the end of 2015/16 to eighth, makes him the HoF top ten’s second highest climber. With an overall rank of 565th, he looks set for an impressive finish, in an 11-season career that has seen him earn top 5,000 final ranks seven times. His midfield of Sanchez, Walcott, Sadio Mane, Joe Allen and Firmino has been made possible by opting for a 3-5-2 formation that includes Diomande in attack. As with many in the top ten, a Gameweek 6 wildcard has proved pivotal to his campaign, seeing him rise to the edge of the top 1,000. So far he is yet to take a hit.

The highest climber and best ranked HoF manager is Mark Mansfield, who leaps from 109th to ninth after securing an overall rank at the end of  Gameweek 11 of 312nd. Unusually among the top ten, a Gameweek 8 wildcard was deployed, seeing him move from 7,824th to 1,853rd.

Going into Gameweek 12 Mark has already used his two free transfers, also indicating he is another to snap up Hazard ahead of his price rises. With two top 500 finishes already in his previous ten seasons, he looks well placed to march further up the rankings and challenge for the title.

Chris Greene dips from ninth to tenth after a disastrous Gameweek 11, which saw him finish with a below average score of 50 and drop to 65,999 in the overall FPL standings. A Gameweek 4 wildcard offered a short-term boost, helping his rank move from 82,446 to 25,525 but that proved to be his season high point, with four red arrows to follow. Ditching Eden Hazard for one of his two hits this season in Gameweek 6, in a move that also saw Sergio Aguero come in, was another instrumental Gameweek. This saw him initially rise to 26,996 but then slip down the rankings.

Chris is among the late bloomers in the HoF, finishing in the top 5,000, including three top 1,000 ranks, in the last six seasons. In the previous four seasons, 69,993 was his highest season position.

Notable Mentions

Among former FPL winners, last year’s champion Dimitri Nicolaou is having a torrid season. He slips from 1,357 to 3,407 in the HoF and is currently languishing at 1,524,376 in the overall rankings. Dimitri has taken nine hits so far and wildcarded in Gameweek 6 to no avail.

Tom Fenley, 2013/14’s winner, has also fallen down the HoF, from 488th to 673rd. He is currently 394,857th in the overall FPL standings. His Gameweek 8 wildcard saw him earn three red arrows in a row.

FPL champion of 2014/15 Simon March (aka Dufflinks) is another to fall, from 61st to 128th, after finishing Gameweek 11 with a rank of 333,085. As with Tom his Gameweek 8 wildcard also worsened his season, attracting three red arrows.

Among our Moderators and Contributors Evs is top placed at 14th, up seven places on his 2015/16 Career HoF ranking. Currently at 52,906th he has remained within the top 100,000 throughout the season and wildcarded in Gameweek 6.

Mark is the FFScout team’s second highest ranked FPL manager, moving from 49th to 27th. He is ranked 43,131st in FPL and has remained within the top 100,000 since Gameweek 7.

It's different, that's for sure. Do you rotate Redmond and Wilson based on fixtures? Rotating attackers like that doesn't often work, in my experience.

Maybe downgrade one to upgrade the other. You need a Chelsea attacker soon. Except that I think it's fine for now.

I think you need to be looking at GWK 15 onwards in particular when Chelsea (expensive) and Swansea (cheap and basically Sigurdsson) have better fixtures.

With that in mind - and if you are sure you are happy with KDB over Aguero - then I'd look to get in one of HAzard/Costa and one of Azpi/Alonso.

I'd also consider Sigurdsson- but that's not urgent.

Looking ahead to Chelsea's kind run looks key.

I can't be more specific but from writing about the HoF top ten I'd say that Liverpool has been key to their success and I'd wager at least five of the top ten have already moved to get Hazard in looking at their current transfers.

was also considering doing the follwing as an alternative, disclaimer it would mean a really bad front 3. Its bold and risky but it could pay off.

                Lukaku to Anichebe
                Williams to Naughton

Allowing me to have the following midfield

                Sanchez, KDB, Coutinho, Hazard,Firmino

At the beginning of the 95/96 season I entered the Shoot magazine "Dream Machine" fantasy football competition.

My forwards included Ravenelli and Fowler who got four goals between them on the opening day in a 3-3 draw between Boro and Liverpool. I was subsequently ranked in the top 1,000 in the competition (which I found out my dialling a premium rate number and entering my team's code).

Since then I've done pretty much nothing of note fantasy football wise.

I won £100 cash prize Manager Of the Month (February) in 1998 for the dream team-esque game in Glasgow's biggest free newspaper at the time, the Glaswegian - the game used only players from the 5 professional teams in Glasgow at the time (Celtic, Rangers, Patrick Thistle, Queens Park and Clyde). Doubling up on the Thistle defence (3 clean sheets) and my midfield heavy hitter (in all senses) Jorg Albertz were my secret.

I'm going to create controversy here ...

Hall of fame is just hall of 'Dullard' managers
*i don't mean this in a bad way , nothing wrong with that approach

I think , if anyone played the 'dullard' way , pick highly owned players , stats based , no punts , go with the crowd , then anyone would get top 10k each year

I think there's some truth in that.

I get in the top 10K most years. This year I sort of did a different thing and stepped out of the dullard way - result I'm 1.2m in the world.

There's more to it though. This bunch think in advance much more. They are already onto Chelsea...the doubled up on Liverpool midfielders early - not many overall have done that.

Also like Ville Ronka he saves a transfer every other week - which means he can make bigger changes without hits more often. He's very patient but it's worked for him.

I have to agree with saving trades. I think it's the best way to go unless you really cannot field a team of 11. You have so many more options with 2 trades. I have seen a few comments on here with people taking hits which has paid off which is great.
There are many different ways to skin a cat.

I've had to take more hits this season due to circumstance - what is remarkable about the HoF top ten is that they are always set up so that they can take their time and save transfers.

Mark adopted Ville's tactic o saving trades a couple of seasons ago and got into the top 100. As long as you can start with a good base its definitely the ideal way to play the game - helps move with form and fixtures really easily.

            being a bit slow here.
The benefits of saving trades is??
Greater flexibility when releasing the funds from 2 sales?
the assumption that there are GWs that signify a major fixture shift?

Yep, you can make two trades without a hit. so for example get Aguero in without surgery in gwk 6. Or HAzard in now without necessarily ditching a higher priced player. So much more flexibility. You can also take the odd hit with them to do a little spring cleaning.

Takes lots of concentration though to keep an eye on fixture swings, ownership and form.

I bet the common theme of most of us near the top of the HoF is the investment of time towards FPL. I read articles on here, articles on a Facebook group, engage in live chat, I analyse a lot of stats, and keep a close eye on price changes - basically any bit of information that gives me an advantage. This all takes up a lot of time.

so we're back to form v. fixtures.
Is there a Hof template for which is more important?
obviously it's these two factors that are going to impact the 3rd factor of ownership.

Ideally it's form (looking back) plus fixtures (looking forward).
Fixtures are little use without form, but they are the icing on the cake.
As you say, if a player has both form and fixtures, then ownership should follow.

I don't really think I have a style. Perhaps my strength is that I tend to adapt to different styles of seasons well. I have periods where I save transfers, and periods where I can get "hitty", but I have only had one season outside the top 10k.

This season certainly seems to favour those taking hits more than normal.

I think an important H2H match in GW12 may be ruined by my impatient, alcoholic driven hit this week, which AOA may help. AOAs weren't really designed for playing Fletcher though.

How did you know that I had sold Firmy, or was that just a flippant remark?

This is key to me. The forward thinking and getting players in before they explode. Difference between top 1k and the rest of the pack. Knee jerking gundogan in after two goals is the opposite

Yes clearly super skill in the villa Ronke's of this world who place top 1k and higher each year
No idea how they do that

Unless it's just random theory , where out of 3m regular players , there will be 1 who places high each year .
Especially if he is good enough to place top 10k through skill

1000 regular top 10k players by law of average would produce 1 who averages way higher ...not sure if they would be necessarily a better players than Jonty , Tm etc ...

Maybe i'm going to add to the controversy here.
I think it's people with the stats that have the real advantage. It's also if you have the skill reading those stats.
I've never been a member and don't have the stats but always hover around 10k to 50k mark. So i've felt at a distinct disadvantage. I've a rival who's a FFScout member, and it's like playing against a chess computer. Beaten him once in 8 years.

You may think it makes no difference but if you are selecting the optimal stats based transfer it means that over a season you'll get it right more times than not. That's at least 38 optimised transfers.

I use what i know from watching matches, a bit of MOTD, and the telegraph footy summary.
I happy with aiming for a top 10k rank.

I think this is very true, and where maybe the confusion with Dullard is made.

I don't watch anywhere near enough Football, as I much prefer to analyse stats to get the information I need. I don't always get it right, but feel I subtly get it right more often than not based on the statistical approach. It's how folk get the enjoyment of playing FPL, by either being a football nut and watching loads, or the way I do it. There is no right or wrong way, just the way you like to approach FPL to get your personal enjoyment.

        El_Duderino..
I don't read stats and I'm having a really good Hof rank.
It's all abot a few things..
        1. Getting template players Before everyone else. Lukaku and Payet gw4, 17+9pts, is a very good example. Now they are both gone since i bought Walcott and Austin gw8, 13+13pts.
        2. Prefer fixtures over form, Sanches and Allen gw10, 13+10pts.
        3. If possible, stay away from players in European competitions.
        4. Look at fixtures over long term. Bought Mane, Firmino and Lovren gw6, just to release them for christmas.
Fantasy football scout articles (for non-members) enough for being a skilled manager.
        Good luck mr El_Duderino..

Dullards may dominate the upper reaches of the Hall of Fame, but most FPL Winners do not finish in the top 10k every season.

And there is more to being a successful dullard than simply following your formula. Some rely on stats and some don't. Some are willing to take a few well-judged hits and others aren't. And the better ones are trend-setters who know when to get ahead of the crowd by replacing some of the currently highly owned players with others before they become part of the new template. Going with the crowd increases the probability of finishing in a similar position to the rest of the crowd, but that position will not always be in the top 10k.

If it was that easy to get top 10k every season then why are there so few who actually achieve this? In my Top 10k Any Season there are very few if any who have achieved this, and most of those in PKM's Top 1k ANY Season mini-league have not achieved this either.

Agreed, top thousand is a lot more difficult.

There are a few like yourself who finish top 10k most seasons, but Leaf claimed that anyone could get top 10k every year playing that way.

In the top 50 on the Career Hall of Fame, Ville Ronka (8) and Utkarsh Dalmia (7) are the only ones to finish in the top 10k every season.
The next best current sequences are: David Meechan, Jonty and Denial (6).
19 of this top 50 finished outside the top 10k last season.

Ville Ronka, Triggerlips and Matt Martyniak have each finished in the top thousand 4 times in the 10 seasons listed.
Next best are Marlen Rattiner, Rich Morcella, Ray Freeman, Chris Greene, James Kettles, Vegard Moberg, Bruce Savage, Evs, Martin Button, Mustafa Bialk, Jack Kennedy, Paul Marshman, Derek Simpson and Mark Sutherns (3).

So what's the secret of finishing regularly (that is, 3 or more times) in the top thousand?

      Player Prices

Player prices change during the season dependent on the popularity of the player in the transfer market. Player prices do not change until the season starts.

The price shown on your transfers page is a player's selling price. This selling price may be less than the player's current purchase price as a sell-on fee of 50% (rounded up to the nearest £0.1m) will be applied on any profits made on that player.

For example, if you buy a player for £8.3m and when you transfer him his price is £9.0m, his selling price will be £8.6m.

I bought Musa last week and have mixed feelings.

Vs WBA he seemed to stay wide and/or deep a fair bit. He did get behind the back-line a few times though, and when he did he looked threatening, but was subbed off at about 65-mins for D Grey.

He can clearly score and I can imagine him getting to the by-line and providing a few assists but I'm worried about rotation with Schlupp, Albrighton, maybe Vardy and now Grey all options in that position.

I'm keeping him for another couple of weeks (mainly as I don't like Austin's fixtures before GW14) but I'm not sure that I'd recommend him to others.

i was planning to do it but lots of people putting me off it. When i compared it to the midfield i had i would have been 50-60 points better off if i had that midfield over last 5 GW

If it 5 in midfield then might as well have the best. It seems extreme but probably no more that a Kun Ibra Costa frontline.

Nah it is way to embarrassing giving up - to yourself and in MLs.

Current OR over a million because I picked the wrong strategy from the beginning with an expensive defence, stuck with Ibra and got stubborn. Finished around 5K last season, so it isn't fun.
But now the real challenge is to try and claw your way back up the rankings. Wouldn't say I am enjoying it, but I'll take it as a difficult challenge.

Purely speculation at this point. Can't see him leaving until the summer either way. On WC as well and keeping. I would get if you wanted to get in on Kane for example before the masses, but I don't think this should be the reason.

See if Hazard gets through his games and how Sanchez is. Hard to bench 11m for a long period when an alternative has been smashing it.

On a WC myself and have a pretty similar team.

Still debating whether to go with Snoddy or Gundogan to be honest, as I think both could be good value.

I would go with Austin over Defoe. I know Soton has got 2 difficult fixtures on paper, but Liverpool at home and Everton away could easily mean goals for him, and he has very nice fixtures all the way until GW25.

I have also thought on doubling up on WBA and buying Nyom instead of Friend. Friend has difficult fixtures coming up, but WBA fixtures are nice 4 out of the next 5.

This is of course a questions of strategy, but I would upgrade De Roon. Some doubts on gametime after IB and with december fixtures coming thick and fast, rotation might be an issue again this year, where you would want someone better imo.

I have mane and firmino. Would rather have firmino for a hard game, playing up front he's more 'certain' to be involved if they only score 1 or 2. And coutinho can assist from corners and isn't afraid to shoot. But I agree with you that Mane is by far the most 'explosive' guy of the 3, and the most likely to get 2 or more goals
