Costa Axed for Foxes Visit?

According to a multitude of reports emerging this evening, Diego Costa has been dropped from Chelsea’s matchday squad for their trip to Leicester City on Saturday evening.

While we normally shy away from breaking news based on rumour and gossip, when those stories surround a major Fantasy asset and build such momentum, they prove difficult to ignore.

Right now, there is little or no hope of having the reports confirmed prior to Saturday’s 11.30am deadline.

It is said that Chelsea are not willing to comment and, certainly, Antonio Conte did not allude to any such issues in his press conference, referring instead to “one or two situations” to assess prior to naming his line-up.

Arguably, Conte could have taken the opportunity to raise doubts had a fitness issue been a factor. Certainly, the reports suggest that Costa has not trained this week and yet the Chelsea boss did not mention this or raise any concerns on Costa’s availability.

Instead, it seems that these reports stem from a dispute between the player and club, emphasising that Costa has been “dropped” and citing a number of issues as the cause.

The Mail first broke the story at 6.07pm this evening, reporting a dispute with Chelsea’s fitness coaches.

Describe “a blazing row with Antonio Conte over his fitness”, the Mail went on to claim that the player felt he was struggling with a lower back problem, an opinion which the fitness coaches and Conte himself have apparently dismissed.

However, further reports have also highlighted another angle of possible dispute, namely recent interest from China, reportedly amounting to a staggering offer of £30 million-a-year for the player.

The upshot of tonight’s breaking stories offers Fantasy managers little but uncertainty.

Given the scale of the reporting, we should perhaps expect Costa’s absence but, until we hear from the club and Conte, we cannot be sure on the nature or severity of the issue.

However, with Chelsea facing Leicester in the evening kick-off, it is inevitable that Conte will be forced to comment should Costa be omitted from the squad.

His reaction and response to that questioning will be fascinating, with Costa’s 44.5% ownership hanging on each and every word.

In an already remarkable season, both in the Premier League and from a Fantasy perspective, this could prove to be the biggest twist yet.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Definitely him. Most odd. God knows what will come out of this.

If it's purely an argument, surely Chelsea have to repair this? their whole title challenge hinges on it.

If Costa is gone, I feel like going for 3-5-2... Just played around with it and:

      Heaton - Pickford
      Alonso - Baines - Evans - Pieters - Amat
      Sanchez - Hazard - Alli - Coutinho - Phillips
      Ibra - Lukaku - 4.3m

for instance leaves me with 1.2m in the bank...

Just to make people aware, there has been tension between Conte and Costa before this week. For example...

In the Leicester game (I think it was), Conte was gesticulating at Costa about making the "wrong" runs (too wide). Costa reacted furiously and made the 'rotating hands' gesture to Conte 3 times in the next couple of minutes. "If you don't like the way I am playing, take me off" was the essential message.

Conte ignored him and Costa played the whole game. He wasn't injured (as I initially assumed). He just didn't like Conte berating him from the touchline.

Make of that what you will. But the idea of a clash having occurred is no surprise to me.

Giroud is going up tonight and Costa dropping so that's a .2 shift already....There will be more movement in the transfer window again tomorrow, player prices seem to change so dramatically at the moment. I got him for 9.6, current value 10.7 so 10.1 to sell....If he is a doubt for Hull he will probably be down to 10.3 by next transfer window. I'm almost certainly making the move to ditch him for Giroud....If he scores he will go up another .3 as well I'd imagine !

Raises the question though - should FPL be flagging managerial decisions and such like.

I notice that Rotowire have Costa flagged as "Out" "Manager Decision".

Should this also arrive in FPL? I'll open the floor on that one.

that would be a no from me. has to pay to know whats going on once in a while, without relying on fplags

Tough call, a manager can change his mind if an apology is received or even because of pressure from above

That's the issue. A manager can change that decision at a whim and overnight - plus we'd only get an update on the situation when the manager is next questioned. So I don;t think a red "out" flag could ever be used. Doubt could be the only flag applied and probably a minor one.

Where does it all end then?

We have enough false flags based on hearsay and surmise when the player is not injured as it is.

I pointed out a few weeks ago that if you were going to flag 'doubt' based on nothing but newspaper froth then why not flag doubt based on actuality? And I gave as an example the fact that Aké could shortly be recalled from loan.

We don't need more flags, we need less. And they need to be certain. A red flag is for an injury or other absolute unavailability (AFCON). A yellow is to indicate the chance of recovery in time for the next game. And that should be it. Nothing more than that. No guesswork.

Fair enough - it would be an addition to the existing criteria for sure so would lead to more flags.

Just to comment on injury doubts though - there is always going to be uncertainty surrounding them - they're not certain by their very nature. They are probably as certain that a player is a doubt as they can be - if that makes sense 😉

I don't think the 75% flags do any harm if they are divorced from the price rises. That's the real problem most folk have with them.

But they ARE divorced from price rises and falls. Yellow flags don't change the thresholds in any way. The only thing they (sometimes) do is to mislead managers into selling (or not buying) a player who is not injured at all. That's the only way they affect price changes.

My problem with them is the inaccuracy. A player shouldn't be flagged as injured unless the club or player says they are (or they miss a match for that reason). Until then it's guesswork and we don't need flags based on guesswork.

I'm torn on this one. Don't want to lose the value, but not keen on the move either

          On a WC....RMT please
          Heaton, Pickford
          Azpi, Walker, Baines, Pieters, Amat
          Sanchez, Coutinho, Phillips, Stanislas, Sims
          Aguero, Kane, Defoe

Heard Pickford may be back in about 4 weeks so may stick and carry on playing Heaton. I feel Coutinho will hit form again. Would appreciate any suggestions on how I could improve this team
