The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 22

A day for differentials.

Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino and West Bromwich Albion’s Gareth McAuley are the only two players with more than 10% ownership to hit double-digits.

Firmino was teetering on the edge prior to the today’s deadline – owned by just over 456,000 FPL managers or 10.6% – the Brazilian had shed 340,000 since Gameweek 16.

Such losses are understandable, sparked by a dismal run of paltry returns. A single goal over ten barren Gameweeks – his strike in a 4-1 victory over Stoke City – did little to stem a tide of rejection. With Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana thriving, Firmino owners were switching allegiance or looking elsewhere as rival heavy-hitters delivered.

Today’s 14-points will reverse matters, for now at least. That fifth double-figure haul for Firmino ironically arrived on a day that saw Philippe Coutinho make a return to the Liverpool starting line-up. Withdrawn on 65 minutes, his comeback was curtailed as he gave way to allow his compatriot to take centre-stage.

While his two goals were not enough to save Liverpool from defeat, Firmino’s own Fantasy stock is revived, just as thousands were making or considering the move for his Brazilian team-mate.

But Coutinho’s early withdrawal has already proved enough to give some early adopters the jitters. Meanwhile, after suffering a third successive blank, Lallana has now returned just a single goal and an assist in six starts.

Based on early transfer activity, both are facing ownership losses over the extended gap to Gameweek 23, with this shifting affection from one Liverpool asset to another typical of behaviour this season.

Two prolonged spells of form from Coutinho’s and Lallana have come close to resolving the argument but, in truth, we look unlikely to ever settle on one of Klopp’s midfield as a dependable “solution”.

Perhaps the key question should be whether we should overlook them altogether.

Two draws and a defeat has stalled the Liverpool title bid, while over the last four Gameweeks, their attacking numbers are settled in mid-table. They face Chelsea next.

Sadio Mane’s absence appears to be a key factor and, arguably, until his return, we should reserve judgement, regardless of Firmino’s flurry.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Save FT?

    Heaton
    Alonso - Baines - Brunt
    Sanchez - Hazard - Eriksen - Phillips
    Ibra (C) - Giroud - Defoe

    Pickford - Friend - Capoue - Amat (1FT - 0.8 ITB)

    Cheers.

See how Hazard does against Hull, but if he blanks I'd look to ship him for someone that's better value

Who do u think is best replacement for Holebas... (4.6m)

    Funes Mori, Holgate, Pieters... other?
(Can't get Wimmer as have triple Spurs as is)..

Have an eye on blanks too so thinking maybe an Everton defender would be best.. plus I dont have one of these.

Are either Funes Mori or Holgate nailed?
    Anybody else to consider?

Funes Mori looks nailed. Definitely ahead of Jagielka in the pecking order.
Holgate is more of a question mark. It will depend on whether they revert to 4 at the back.

    1. Have Baines, should I get Coleman instead
    2. Have Eriksen, should I get Alli instead

Obviously if we are being literal, not a single player is essential.

So what does being 'essential' actually mean to you?

A must have player or players that you can build your team around

This is what I mean though. "Must have" is just another way of saying essential. But why must you have that player? What happens if you don't?

For me, "Essential" is the wrong term. No one is essential.
      I'd use "overly risky".
Not having Sanchez, the highest scorer and most popular captain option, is just too risky. But for those who are chasing, a risky strategy is needed.

If you see almost everyone on this board happy when a player scores, yet you don't own him, then he becomes essential in my eyes. That honor right now rests with one Marcos Alonso.

Which one of these would you get if you already own Lukaku?
    A) Barkley
    B) Antonio

P.S. I know doubling up doesn't matter with the bigger teams, but with a team like Everton, a double up could mean trouble, like I got myself into earlier in the season.

Antonio has seemed to tick along ok for his price making it hard to get rid of him, I planned to ditch him a few weeks ago but he keeps performing. I feel Barkley is less reliable and good be dropped again with a few bad performances but probably has better fixtures and a higher points ceiling.

Yeah, almost certain of that, but you should be able to deal with the odd benching. Think Pep just fancies the attacking threat of Zabaleta a lot more. He's another midfielder for him who can assist and score the odd goal.

Yoshida nailed for now and actually been playing well compared to previous seasons, wouldn't put anyone of getting him, I will be for Amat when I can afford that luxury. I like friend and mori in that price bracket and personally schlupp, big Sam will work his magic eventually and you have a winger down as a defender which is always appealing

Big Sam has a hard job to fix the Palace mess. I think Funes Mori is the safe choice with strong fixtures. Will get Yoshida after the transfer window closes

    Baines, Brunt, Daniels (Chambers, Yoshi)
    Sanchez, Haz, Alli, Phillips (Stanislas)
    Ibra, Lukaku, Giroud

    Stanislas-Carroll + Daniels-Rose?

Hmm, wouldn't want to spend two transfers just to get your dream defender. Next thing you know, Giroud loses his place or Lukaku blanks again, and you'll need the transfers.

Nowhere near as tight as Spurs at the back though, and I don't think their fixtures are great (Bournemouth).

Really want to get another dangerous wing-back into my team to pair with Baines and Brunt.

Walker is up to 6.2 now, Rose 6.1. I'm really struggling to split them to be honest. If not for the yellows I think I'd take Rose for sure. Rose is the differential as well as Walker is in 32.9% of teams now.

If Southampton beat Leicester later, Leicester will be just 5 points clear of the relegation zone with a worse goal diffence (than Palace in 18th) They play Burnley, Swansea and Hull (potentially massive games) around Man UTD and Arsenal in their next 5 league games. All that with the Champions league KO's to worry about. Best price 16/1 (17.0) to get relegated. Worth a few quid.

Spurs defence looks in a bit of a state right now, with Toby & Vert both injured. With EL back soon they could be struggling?

        How does it line up?

Walker & Rose obviously as LB/RB or wing backs and then:

Wimmer & Dier as CB's? Where does Davies & Trippier fit in? Can either play CB's? Or Wanyama who wasn't too bad when he slotted in.

A or B, but you already have Alli so wouldn't double Spurs mid

        Randolph/Jaku
        Baines, Walker, Alonso, McCauley, Holgate
        Sanchez, Antonio, Erksen, Lallana, Fletcher
        Kane, Ibra, Negredo

        1FT, 1.4itb

Need to get rid of Negredo and possibly Lallana. Willing to take a hit. What do you reckon?

        A) Giroud & Mirallas/Milner/Iwobi
        B) Defoe & Pedro
        C) A Carroll, no hit
        D) Lukaku & Stanislaus
        E) other

          C

Wouldn't get rid of Lallana for a hit. Could've easily scored today.

Keep in mind the difference between in form and out of form is whether one finishes a goal chance or not.
            Lallana couldn't finish.
