Scout Notes – EFL Cup – Wednesday

Liverpool slump once again as a late Long goal takes Southampton to Wembley to set up a likely double Gameweek scenario for Arsenal and Alexis Sanchez.

Liverpool 0 Southampton 1 (0-2 on aggregate)

Shane Long (6.1) sent Southampton to Wembley with a 90th minute EFL Cup semi-final winner that a resolute Saints thoroughly deserved.

Liverpool dominated possession but rarely threatened, with Daniel Sturridge (9.7) missing the one clear chance they created when he volleyed over from just five yards out. The only other major scare for the visitors came when Fraser Forster (5.1) somehow slapped the ball off the goal-line from his own fumble.

Oriol Romeu (4.5) and Maya Yoshida (4.2) were superb for the Saints, who sat deep and yet always carried a threat on the break; a threat that finally bore fruit when Long smashed home from a Josh Sims (4.2) assist.

With the EFL Cup final taking place on Sunday, February 26, Southampton’s Gameweek 26 home match with Arsenal will now be postponed. If that translates to a double Gameweek 34 or 37, as it did in the previous two seasons, then the Saints will also face either a trip to Chelsea or Middlesbrough. Arsenal will entertain Sunderland or go to Stoke City.

There will be more time to assess the scenario in full. However, clearly, the immediate impact is that with Manchester United also favourites to progress to the final via tonight’s tie with Hull City, we face the prospect of being without both Alexis Sanchez and Zlatan Ibrahimovic for Gameweek 26 – the top two owned Fantasy Premier League assets.

While that will come as a blow, the preferred strategy will surely be to bench both and absorb their loss for that weekend.

In saying that, it’s worth bearing in mind that, should Arsenal and United both progress to the FA Cup quarter finals – which take place on the weekend of Gameweek 28 – Sanchez and Ibra could conceivably face two blanks over three rounds of fixtures.

The upside, of course, would be the subsequent doubles to follow as a result of rescheduling, making them key targets for the Triple Captain chip, or as part of a Bench Boosted squad.

Returning to Southampton’s triumph, skipper Virgil van Dijk (5.8) missed the Anfield tie as he continues to struggle with an ankle problem. Reports on Wednesday suggested that the Dutchman would be facing up to three months on the sidelines with the injury setback suffered against Leicester City on Sunday, although the club are yet to confirm that prognosis.

Claude Puel addressed Van Dijk’s situation post-match, to reveal that the defender is to undergo further scans and consult specialist advice. That would certainly indicate that we are unlikely to see Van Dijk for the Gameweek 23 trip to Swansea City.

Jack Stephens (4.0) was a more than able deputy for the Dutchman in Tuesday’s tie, one of just two changes Puel made to his side. Stephens, along with Yoshida, now represents a budget route into a Saints defence that, as demonstrated in last night’s tie, could offer real value as a source of defensive returns. However, that presumes that Puel will not move into the market prior to Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

Elsewhere for the Saints, both James Ward-Prowse (5.0) and Jay Rodriguez (6.3) were withdrawn with injuries, with the latter suffering an ankle problem which saw him swapped for Long at half-time. Both appear to be early doubts for Saturday’s FA Cup tie with Arsenal and the Tuesday meeting with the Swans.

Jurgen Klopp was more bold with his Liverpool line-up, bringing in four fresh faces, most notably Joel Matip (5.3), who replaced Ragnar Klavan (4.6) after finally being cleared to play following his bizarre club versus country issue.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (4.3) again came in for Nathaniel Clyne (5.8). The England right-back played the full match at the weekend, but a recurrence of his rib injury sidelined him against the Saints.

It has been a terrible January for the Reds, who have won just once in six attempts – and that was 1-0 at League Two Plymouth.

The return of Philippe Coutinho (8.3 and 18.7%-owned) has not borne fruit as yet – the Brazilian managed 87 minutes but again lacked any real spark– and Liverpool have sorely missed Sadio Mane’s (9.0) attacking verve.

To cap a miserable month, Mane’s Senegal finished top of their group in the Africa Cup of Nations 24 hours before the Reds’ EFL Cup exit, so his absence will be extended further.

With Chelsea and Spurs to come over the next three Gameweeks, any sign of an end to their 2017 slump could remain equally elusive.

Liverpool XI: Karius, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Lovren, Milner, Can (Origi 78), Henderson, Lallana, Firmino, Sturridge, Coutinho (Wijnaldum 87).
Subs not used: Mignolet, Klavan, Moreno, Lucas, Woodburn.

Southampton XI: Forster, Cedric, Stephens, Yoshida, Bertrand, Ward-Prowse (Hojbjerg 59), Romeu, Davis, Tadic, Rodriguez (Long 45), Redmond (Sims 81).
Subs not used: Lewis, Clasie, Martina, McQueen.

Realistically need to have 2FT for next week with FA cup draw.

Bearing in mind the potential fixtures on gw 28. Prob look to free up cash for Giroud - Lukaku. Is downgrading Defoe and idea?

      How many FTs?

Keep Giroud for Watford before moving him on to Lukaku (I and basically everyone else on FFS who owns Gru are doing this)

IF you have to make a transfer this week, I'd be tempted to move Holebas on for Williams or Funes Mori since you can no longer afford Baines/Goalman. Or maybe just sidegrading Jevans to Brunt.

Have to see - had Amat sitting on my bench since day one so it's a bit of a luxury transfer... when do you ever use your 3rd sub apart from blank weeks? That's the only time you need this. But it's a good shout.

Yoshida, Holgate and maybe even Muniesa if he starts playing again good bargain bucket buys.

I plan on keeping Sanchez/Ibra so I need a full squad elsewhere - meaning Amat has to go.

Makes sense. I'm also working my team over to get to minimum 8 players for the blanks. But I'm worried about staying competitive meantime (e.g. I will still be bringing in more Spurs cover after this weekend as otherwise I'm hugely exposed) so it's still a balancing act.

Either way, Kaku for Gru is a nobrainer after WAT - suspect everybody will be doing it (unless there's a Gru hattie... in which case we'll all be waiting for the price rises before selling)

I know some people have planned to use WC exactly to take advantage of dgw.

    Would u

    1. Use wildcard to stock up players with dgw?

    Or

    2. Use wildcard to tidy up after stocking up ?

    Other strategies ?

If you WC in GW29, you could actually say this covers both 1 and 2 to an extent

Have to see what evolves once we know all of the information.

You tend to enter the "end game" where you don't really need to tidy up around GW32-33 where you can WC to pick up DGWers, then plan your transfers in between to ensure that, if there's a second DGW, you have decent coverage there, too.

We had a lot of discussions about this last year on the site (some felt best to WC in GW32 and others in GW36) which I'm sure will be repeated once the DGW dates / teams are solidified.

      1. Pinky Blinders
        • 7 Years

I had to WC a match game earlier than most people last year because I wanted to bury my only rival in a head to head league. It felt weird going early but didn't burn me too much. The tricky bit wasn't so much the DGWs themselves, it was fielding a starting 11 for the matches in between. There was no perfect solution, especially if you wanted to GO BIG with BB first and 15 DGW players in, so you just needed to grit your teeth and look at the whole DGW period as a cumulative run of enjoyment. I think I ended up fielding 13 DGW players in GW 34 and then did the best I could with single transfers to cover 35 and 36 before the second DGW in 37. Ended up with a final OR near 2k. But more importantly, it was a huge amount of fun just planning for it almost like a mini tournament within the season. Balders also was very helpful from a teaching standpoint on how to approach it. Think a lot of folks on here learned from that experience and will happily share strategy once we get closer.

Same. I was behind in my ML but came through to win.

I went big with BB initially and then managed transfers to TC. Worked a charm

What do you lot think of Fraser from Bournmouth for a 5th mid to sit on the bench and be used in GW26/28?

Would you pay the extra for Stanislas given his habit of breaking or do you think Fraser is enough?

Decent shout - if he's sitting on the bench I'd keep it as cheap as possible as you might want that extra 0.4-5 to eke out another transfer at another time.

Do you think he'll hold his place down?

He's got to be good for 6 or 7 weeks, Stanislas gets injured a fair bit so not sure who's more risky.

Don't see why not, seems to have burst into the scene and kept his place whilst alternatives like Ibe have floundered.

Have to see how it develops over the next few (unless you want to get in right away). Tom Carroll at Swansea another to consider

How about double up Baines and Coleman to prep for blanks , and have lukaku upfront !

Definitely too early to say, but I'm looking at drafting him in for Amat at some point... bit of a "luxury transfer" imo so it'll be on a week where I have nothing better to do or on my wildcard.

Any tips on improving this team, 1 FT 0.3 ITB:

    Foster (Jaku)
    Williams McAuley Gibson (Dawson, Kingsley)
    Eriksen Phillips Sanchez Antonio (Clayton)
    Ibrahimovic Lukaku Costa

Not sure about having 3 players from the same team, especially GK and DF (put McAuley in last week). Bench is very weak as well.

Alonso (6.6) or Rose (6.1)? Who would you rather pick up right now as a season keeper?

Alonso. I'm strongly considering drafting Rose in next week but those 8 ycs are so off-putting.... 2 game suspension waiting to happen

Any news on Pickford? Will he back in time for GW26? will save me a transfer if he will be fit by then. Forster is my main keeper.

Also now Walcott is back, will iwobi be out?

    Afternoon all,

    Your thoughts massively appreciated...

    Cech
    Alonso / Brunt / Friend
    Phillips / Alli / Lallana / Sanchez
    Carroll / Ibra / Aguero

    Jaku / Davies / Ake / Pieters

I had 2FT this week so early in the week I did Capoue >Davies, not a knee jerk imo, rather a replacement of bench fodder and one that is rising in price rather than falling 🙂 If he continues to deliver, i might promote him lol

    Would you:

    1FT & 0.7 ITB

    a. save other FT to have 2 next week
    b. Ake > Holgate/Byram
    c. Lallana > Pedro/Sterling

    Many thanks all!!

      A , save?
Assess after next week, there are no glaring replacements for Lallana .
Pinch Zaha after this week maybe

Josh McEachran...Once a bright Chelsea prospect

“Real Madrid and Manchester United came in when I
was 16,” he told the Daily Mail. “I could not believe it
when my agent said ‘Real Madrid want you’ Unbelievable, isn’t it?

“Madrid had the contract waiting for me and they
wanted all my family to fly over to sign a five-year
contract, but I said, ‘No, I want to stay at Chelsea’.

“I believed that I was going to make it (at Chelsea).
When I made my debut I thought, ‘Ah, that was a good
choice for me to say no to Real Madrid,’ but looking
back now maybe I should have (gone).”
