Captain Poll – Gameweek 24

The Gameweek 24 Captain Poll may just reveal a shift in our thinking regarding the Fantasy Premier League armband.

With Arsenal facing a testing trip to Stamford Bridge, interest in Alexis Sanchez (11.9), who has topped the poll for the last two weeks, is likely to be muted.

Despite delivering attacking returns in all but one of his last 11 league encounters, the Chilean faces a Blues defence that has conceded the fewest amount of close range efforts over the last four Gameweeks.

Chelsea’s Golden Boot leader Diego Costa (10.4) could present a more popular option in that match, given that the Gunners have shipped six goals and earned just a single clean sheet in four.

Blues schemer Eden Hazard (10.2) has three assists in five, but with just a single goal in his previous eight Gameweeks, confidence in the Belgian continues to waver.

Liverpool have suffered a dreadful start to 2017, failing to keep a clean sheet, while suffering a Premier League defeat to Swansea City and domestic cup exits at the hands of Wolves and Southampton.

But with Sadio Mane (9.0) likely to make his first start since returning from Africa Cup of Nations duty, the Reds assets could gain some traction ahead of a favourable trip to Hull City.

Three goals and an assist in his last four away trips arguably make the Senegalese winger the pick of the bunch, with Roberto Firmino (8.4) proving erratic and Philippe Coutinho (8.3) still to establish a rhythm following his recent ankle injury.

The Tigers have shown improved resilience since Marco Silva took charge but are still seeking their first clean sheet at the KCOM Stadium, where their long-suffering supporters have witnessed 21 goals conceded from 11 matches.

A cast of Spurs attacking assets did themselves few favours with last night’s 0-0 stalemate with Sunderland. A home encounter against another north east side, Middlesbrough, should offer the platform to make amends and ensure that Harry Kane (11.2), Dele Alli (8.8) and Christian Eriksen (8.8) feature prominently in this week’s poll reckoning.

Alli’s eight goals from his last seven Gameweeks presents a hugely impressive CV, while Kane notched a hat-trick in his last home league outing and boasts six goals in as many matches. Eriksen is now without a goal in seven outings, though three chances created and two shots on target in Tuesday’s draw on Wearside indicates that his underlying threat continues.

Romelu Lukaku (9.6) is also expected to be among those vying for top spot, as Everton prepare to welcome a Bournemouth outfit that has leaked 10 goals in their last four matches, more than any other side over that spell.

Meanwhile, the 26.1% owned Belgian striker, who faces Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium this evening, has three goals and an assist in five prior to tonight’s clash.

Everton team-mate Ross Barkley (7.0) could offers an interesting differential armband option, with three assists and a goal in his previous five appearances. His performance in the Potteries warrants monitoring ahead of the Cherries meeting.

Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.7) has played second fiddle to Sanchez in the last two polls but has remained the most popular captain pick among FPL managers. The Swede has earned that accolade for six consecutive Gameweeks.

He could well claim top position in our poll this time around ahead of a meeting with a faltering Leicester City side. Having blanked at Stoke City in Gameweek 22, Ibrahimovic will seek a return to the scoresheet in this evening’s Old Trafford meeting with Hull City which would set him up for a clash with the Foxes defence. Claudio Ranieri’s rearguard have claimed just two clean sheets since Gameweek 8.

In any other season, a home tie against Swansea City would have made Sergio Aguero (12.8) a shoo-in for the Gameweek armband.

But with one goal in his last four starts, the Manchester City striker’s stock has plummeted with his ownership dipping to just below the 20% mark this week.

Kevin De Bruyne (10.5) could surpass his team-mate, following a 13-point FPL haul in his previous outing against Spurs but, in truth, both require overwhelmingly convincing performances in tonight’s meeting with West Ham to figure in our Gameweek 24 thinking.

Two goals and a clean sheet at Bournemouth on Tuesday evening hints that Sam Allardyce may, at last, be making an impact at Crystal Palace. Their strong performance has prompted us to nominate Christian Benteke (7.3), who notched for the first time since Gameweek 15 last night, for consideration when Sunderland drop by Selhurst Park on Saturday.

Wilfried Zaha (5.5), who made his first appearance since his AFCON absence at the Vitality Stadium, is another differential option that could attract interest. Found in just 4.4% of FPL squads, he looked lively on the south coast, firing in three efforts on goal.

West Brom’s excellent home form hands their key attacking assets an opportunity to garner votes.

Weekend visitors Stoke City have hardly convinced on their travels, shipping 20 goals over 11 road trips. Mark Hughes’ men have also conceded 12 over their last six before tonight’s home encounter with Everton.

The 21.9% owned Matt Phillips (5.9) has blanked in his last three but has been strong on home turf, earning two goals and four assists at The Hawthorns. Similarly, Chris Brunt’s three goals and trio of assists have all arrived over the last five in front of the Baggies’ faithful.

Finally, Salomon Rondon (6.8) is once again expected to lead the line for Tony Pulis’ troops and will be hoping to add to his five goals and two assists in home matches.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of next week’s deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Giroud out for Costa or Benteke? If I go for Benteke it would give me funds to boost my defence
    Team looks like:

    Heaton, Forster
Van Aanholt, McAuley, Gibson, Baines, Amat
    Antonio, Sanchez, Eriksen, Alli, Capoue
    Lukaku, Giroud, Rondon

On first thought I felt Tekkers is needed - your defence is a bit lightweight.

However, because you have Rondon too, it might be a good idea to bring in Costa to beef up your frontline - seems a bit lightweight to have Tekkers, Trollaku and Blankdon there
      (Rondon and soon-to-be Kaku owner)

My defence seems G2G for this gameweek, midfield is strong, and frontline like you say is a bit lightweight. Is it worth taking a -4 to beat the price rise of Coleman since he will be in my team for the next games coming up? I could possibly play 4 at the back with 2 EVE, McAuley, and PVA?

Yeah that's a viable strategy to be honest right now - just depends what your plans are going forward for the blank.

Might be an idea to get even Hernandez in and then as you say load up at the back

I'm fine for GW26, but for GW28 I only have 5 guaranteed starters. Costa looks like an amazing choice for his GW26 fixture so I really need him in. Over the next few weeks i'll slowly start transferring in players who won't blank but it will be devastating to take out the Spurs midfielders 🙁

Yeah totally, I'm going to have a midfield space free for that week (currently have KdB) and hoping I can fit in Haz... may end up taking a punt on Pedro/Willian though (whichever is more in favour at that point lol)

Too far away to know yet - could be all injured by then!

I think the reason why Pedro was left out the starting team last night was because he's been playing most games this season.. I think I would favour him over Willian, but you never know who will score the goals from midfield...

Toss up between Baines and Coleman - I like Baines (don't own either yet btw, but have Baines pencilled in atm) because of pens, I think that's genuinely an ideal situation to have with a defender as a random 5 pointer plus inevitable BPS which could = bonus points is so valuable.

Coleman looking great and surging forward, though - it really is a 50/50.

anyone thinking of using a transfer to remove stanislas despite him playing 26 and 28. next few fixtures are terrible.

only viable option is snodgrass. zaha is an option too but that would be confining yourself to using 2 extra FT over the next 5 week

He's good enough to leave even though he hasn't done much so far. Imo use your transfers to populate your team for the blanks.

      - Snodgrass is a good option if you're going to move though.

    Look a solid plan??…

    Tonight with my 2FTs:
    Hazard+Carroll > Zaha+Lukaku

    Next GW:
    Amat > Coleman

    Gives me:

    Heaton
    Alonso - Walker - Coleman
    Sanchez - Eriksen - Zaha - Phillips
    Kane - Zlatan - Lukaku
    (Jaku - Pieters - Evans - Capoue)

Or do all tonight? but I do have a critical head to head this week

I'd do the first two, then wait and see if Evans is confirmed fit by TP before the weekend. If yes, obviously leave it. If not, take the 4.

        Foster
        Brunt - Coleman - Luiz
        Sanchez - Erikssen - Alli - Phillips
        Ibra - Lukaku - Carroll

        Jaku - Rose - Mee - Clayton

Doing Giroud & Chambers to Coleman & Carroll with my 2 FTs.

Rose to Baines worth (-4) if he's out?

          Hey again Karan

Where would you fit Baines in if Rose is out? I don't think it's worth the -4 as you're just giving yourself a benching headache - who would you drop? Got a good xi and they're the only ones actually scoring points for you. No need to take a -4 if you won't even be needing the player you're bringing in / it doesn't improve your team.

This week I would drop Luiz (ARS) if I took a (-4) for him but I know there's no point taking a hit for a defender. I can do Rose to Baines next week also for free.

            Thanks again! 😀

Yeah. Plus Chelsea fixtures do sort themselves out before long, and if he is on FKs every now and again you might get the odd goal. They're so tight at the back you could find CS' in all sorts of places (I'm keeping Alonso all season now) and I can't see us really smashing Chelsea this weekend, so tbh I'd be keeping Luiz (as I said, I'm keeping Alonso)

              NP 🙂

How does this team look? Asking for a friend.

        Courtois
        Brunt - Coleman - Alonso
        Sánchez - Alli - Antonio - Eriksen
        Kane - Costa - Jesus

        Jakupovic - Holgate - Højbjerg - 3.9

OK. He or she needs to probably lose Courtois - that's a lot invested in a keeper and could be used elsewhere.

Jesus is a huge punt. Admirable, but I prefer players who will definitely start. Who knows, though - if he starts and scores tonight we could all be bringing him in xD

Will there be a couple of DGW fixtures? Im just wondering when to use my bench boost if its likely that I'll be using my Triple Captain in GW 37?

Thanks. I read that previously. It seems like there will only be one GW where there are a few DGW games in GW 37 then. The bench boost chip appears fairly pointless this season then. :-/

Big teams don't tend to cede as many shots - tends to be a handful of passages of play which are decisive (c.f. Mourinho against any big side... think particularly about Liverpool 0-2 Chelsea in that Stevie Slip game)

I'm thinking of playing Jaku over Randolph (SOU) for the same reasons, Leo.

2fts and I need advice on who to ship as i have a benching problem in defense, and not convinced by either mirallas or phillips.

        Heaton/pickford
        Baines/mccauley/azpi/dann/pieters
        De roon/sanchez/mirallas/phillips/alli
        Kane/kaku/ibra

        1.Who do i lose in D? Dann?
2.Drop someone in the front 3 to help upgrade mirallas or phillips?
        3.Other?

I like the Scotty Dann pick!

Erm, your team is pretty damn good - no idea how you've gotten to that and still have 2 FTs!

I think bench Dann, yeah, just about (it's really tough!) and tbh the only transfer I can think of is either De Roon -> Carroll to give you a playing mid for the blanks, or Heaton -> Jaku for the same reason. Save the other.

        These transfers worth it?

        Giroud OUT // Costa IN
Gibson OUT // Coleman IN (-4)

I already have Baines in defence, but is this a good idea for stocking up on the blanks, and before Coleman rises in price?

Stocking up for the coming blanks should be priority.

Next GW is just a few days. I'm slightly hesitated on a hit for DF.

Not sure on a hit for a defender. Think Costa in is a good idea - if you don't have Kaku, he's an even better choice as he plays 26&28. Giroud has to go.

You can wait on Coleman if you have Baines I reckon.

Ideal would be an assist or a goal but no bonus - purely from an ML standpoint, one near rival hasn't got him, but another has captained him. So yeah, that's my hope.

Expecting a goal and assist, which I believe is a 24 pointer.

I'd say play Jaku. There might be lot of save points on offer. Ars-Che on the other hand might turn out to be a close game with less number of shots with FT scores as 1-1 or 2-1.

          Robertson.

I'm getting him in at 4.3 for Amat - happy for him to sit on my bench at that price as 3rd sub, but also fine to play him in 26 (BUR) and 28 (SWA).

Nyom and Byram the other candidates. Nyom nailed and playing well; Byram a ? so far, but as the only specialist right back other than ancient Arbeloa you have to think he'll be starting (but I'd watch and wait for sure!)

Alexis - Alli - Philips - Erikson - Lallana is my midfield.

Would like to bring in Zaha but for whom?

        Philips - Good fixtures
Lallana - Believe pool will come back strong.

I think you'll have to leave it mate.

Phillips will get you points in the WBA home games.
Lallana has Hull and they have Mane back, which seems to enable Lallana.

Give it one more week, then maybe Lallana goes after Hull.

Yes. May be the best thing to do.

But Zaha's fixtures of Sunderland, Stoke, Boro, Westbrom makes a strong case.

Any 'needed' defenders that should be in every team apart from Baines/Coleman or Brunt/McAuley?

Think maybe Alonso as Chelsea are the league leaders and that man is so far forward it is untrue.
I'd have also said Rose before his injury (I'd never have touched actually cos he's on 8ycs which is a transfer waiting to happen) cos of attacking intent, but I think Walker also qualifies.

But overall that's far too expensive for a defence... think EVE WBA [TOP 6] is probably the combo.

Leaning on pieters and azpi in a 3-4-3

Yeah, that's actually probably OK. I did say above to bench Dann, but Sunderland at home seems fertile ground for him to score you a goal. I love him as an FPL asset - very rare you see that a team has scored and you think instantly that it could've been a defender.
