Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 25

Pinpointing the Premier League’s latest whipping boys proved key to captaincy success in Gameweek 24, with Romelu Lukaku (9.7) scoring four in Everton’s 6-3 rout of Bournemouth at Goodison Park.

That scoreline means that the Cherries have shipped 16 goals in their last five matches and should ensure that players from their next opponents, Manchester City, fare well in this week Captain poll.

Given his brace against Swansea at the weekend – bringing his tally to three goals in just two Premier League starts – City starlet Gabriel Jesus (9.2) is likely to be a frontrunner ahead of Monday’s Vitality Stadium clash.

In terms of frequency of goal attempts in the box, he is now faster than team-mate Sergio Aguero (12.8), who found himself on the bench for a second successive match against the Swans.

While the Samba star has gathered more than 88,000 new FPL managers since Saturday, 38,000 have jettisoned the Argentine.

City midfielders Kevin De Bruyne (10.6) and Raheem Sterling (7.8) could also benefit from Aguero’s plummeting stock. The Belgian schemer now has two goals and an assist in his last three, while the England winger has been the master of creative consistency, recording eight assists in his last nine.

Leicester City’s fragile backline is another worth targeting when considering where to place the armband. Manchester United’s comfortable 3-0 win over the Foxes at the King Power Stadium on Sunday means that Claudio Ranieri’s defence have conceded 10 over their last four

Next up for the Italian’s hapless rearguard is a trip to Swansea City, which promotes the Welsh side’s set piece specialist Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.4) as a strong differential captaincy option. The 8.2% owned Icelander now has three goals and a pair of assists under new manager Paul Clement, as well as three double-digit hauls at the Liberty Stadium.

Another alternative armband candidate is Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe (7.8), who scored a brace away to Crystal Palace at the weekend. The 27.8% owned veteran next faces a home tie against a Southampton side that has shipped 11 goals in their last six matches, with just one shutout earned over that spell.

Following their successful day out at Leicester, Manchester United once again face a favourable defence, when Watford drop by Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Hornets have just two clean sheets and have conceded 22 times on the on the road, which presents Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.6) with a golden opportunity to top this week’s poll. The Swede’s strike against the Foxes was his 15th of the season, and he has been the FPL most popular captain pick for seven successive Gameweeks.

Alternative United assets include Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.8), who racked up a 14 point return on Sunday, his biggest of the campaign, thanks to a goal, assist and maximum bonus returns.

Before Marco Silva took charge of Hull City, their trip to Arsenal this weekend would have cemented Alexis Sanchez (11.8)’s captaincy credentials. But in his four league matches in charge, the Portuguese has seemingly transformed the Tigers.

Over that period, Silva’s side have defeated Liverpool and Bournemouth, kept Manchester United at bay in a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford and proved a stubborn opponent to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, where they eventually lost 2-0.

Although the 35.8% owned Sanchez, who has 10 attacking returns in his last 12, is likely to be a popular selection, the considerable improvement from his Gameweek opponents could see him miss out on top spot.

Last week’s captaincy poster boy Lukaku could suffer the same fate: he is unlikely to find the Middlesbrough defence as obliging as the Cherries when Everton visit the Riverside Stadium next weekend. Aitor Karanka’s troops have conceded 14 goals in 12 home matches, earning four clean sheets.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of this week’s deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

I can do Sanchez + Stanislas -> Hazard + Siggy for free

Can only just afford it though. It sounds boring but it seems mad to ditch Sanchez before HULL?

How is everyone currently looking for GW28?

I am currently sitting on 8 players. What number would you be happy with? (this is assuming there are only 3 fixtures)

I think I would be happy with 8 or 9 to be honest, you don’t want to totally wreck your team...

    Foster

    Maguire / A.Smith / Baines

    Siggy / Phillips

    Carroll / Lukaku

      Jaku
      Baines Brunt
      Philips Sigurdsson Philips
      Lukaku Rondon

Lukaku is yet to be transferred in. Ibra or costa will make way. Not sure if it will be worth transferring in antonio for sanchez/pedro but always an option

      Jaku
Brunt - Byram - Baines (Chambers, Mustafi)
Phillips - Antonio - Carroll (Sanchez - Alli)
      Lukaku - Carroll (Costa)

So 9. WIth 7.4 itb (Based on currect prices) for week 29 restructuring, 1 or 2 transfers will give a good team again.

I'm still just deciding who to captain for the weekend 😛

As long as you have more than 6 players come GW28 I think you'll do alright.

I can't see many points in it really. Everyone will own Everton attack and WBA defence, and probably WBA attack and Everton defence. Unlikely to be many real winners.

It just wasn't possible to do really the last time because dgw players then blanked and the dgw players everyone would have wanted didn't have a double.

Until fixtures are cancelled and rescheduled I can't really say what I'd do.

Getting the BB / TC decision right is crucial and the premium player with the best she gets the TC.

He's a frustrating one. I got rid of Sigurdsson last night.

If Mirallas gets back in the starting XI for a good run he could do well but you'll always worry about whether he'll start or not and it's a headache you just don't need over these blanks.

I hope you mean for not of,

But yeah, very frustrating, means another transfer used and therefore one less GW26&28 player or one more hit.

          For yes 🙂

It's annoying to make the transfer but its for a player that will do me well for a good few weeks that was rising in price so just went for it.

I've got him too, don't know what to do because I ain't got any sure way to rid myself of him without sacrificing Ibra or Erik currently, which I don't wanna do. Would have to be a -4 to Snoddy at this point and I still have no Siggy either. Sometimes it's about playing catch up this game, which can be very frustrating.

I have a group chat with my mates in our mini league and not one of them has mentioned anything about the blanks/DGW's coming up. This raises a couple of questions..

Do I have the conscience to tell them about the blanks? (No. Probably not.)

Should I get in as many players that don't blank and reep the rewards? I'm currently 5th and chasing.

Of course maybe they are aware of the blanks and are keeping quiet the same as me

Maguire won't be rotated and has looked like he has a goal in him. Prob robertson due to value though and attacking threat from open play.

        Fair play, listed below

        Grant-Pickford
        Rose-Baines-Holbeas-Lovren-Amat
        Sanchez-Eriksen-Coutinho-Phillips-Hojlberg
        Ibra-Kane-Defoe

Lovren to brunt would have been good but your .1 short...

I would go rose to coleman or brunt 1st as you need at least 3 starting defenders...

Then I'd look to do Cout to Siggy

That would then leave enough for alonso to come in if you were so inclined...

Yep, that's exactly what I would have done. I think you're right on Rose, will probably get him out for Brunt as I've already got Baines.

I only just got Cout in, probably won't take a hit to get him out this week. He may get points v Spurs. But yeah, siggy would be the aim.

            Cheers for the advice mate!

Aguero to be at MCI next year?

Was a discussion before last match where most people thought he'd start. Is it beginning to look less and less likely?

I wouldn't be surprised to see him at Madrid with a player + cash to MCI deal. (Isco or Morata...)

Im a city fan but can see the time has / is coming.
See a massive difference from Aguero to Jesus in the hunting down players, tracking back a bit and less greedy.
Strikers should be greedy but not every single time. I've become increasingly frustrated with clear cut chances missed because of Aguero's refusal to pass.

If you look at his number of Assists this season - 1, compared with Costa - 7 and Ibra - 5 it highlights what I am saying.

I've had a recent conversation with an FPL enthusiast about Aguero's lack of tracking back and overall body language attitude the way he drops his head and walks about at times.

Aguero isn't going to sit on the bench to play second fiddle. He'll be gone is Jesus is going to lead the line.

Lets see how the rest of the season plays out.

Made my transfers on Saturday night after kakus four goals. I am worried I have focussed too much on gameweek 26/28 and the blanks. I'm second(37 points behind) in a mini league for cash in which the leader has three united players and 2 city players, he has not taken a hit in transfer at all so the way I see it he is guaranteed to have less starting players than me in 26 possibly and 28 for sure.
As a result l am after dropping IBRA for Kaku this week, and have kept a hapless two Bournemouth players on the beach for the past two game weeks.

My wildcard is played but I feel I am now in a position to start carrying transfers over and from GW 29 onwards can work towards getting in a couple of city/utd players. Is this a sensible approach or have I weakened my team as a result "over thinking" is it safe to heavily invest in Everton ATM. Even if it means dropping some nailed on players I.e IBRA,sterling, Sanchez.Kdb. I have found myself desperate to have Valencia and Jesus in my team for weeks now but I have chosen fixtures over form and I am very apprehensive
