Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 25

Pinpointing the Premier League’s latest whipping boys proved key to captaincy success in Gameweek 24, with Romelu Lukaku (9.7) scoring four in Everton’s 6-3 rout of Bournemouth at Goodison Park.

That scoreline means that the Cherries have shipped 16 goals in their last five matches and should ensure that players from their next opponents, Manchester City, fare well in this week Captain poll.

Given his brace against Swansea at the weekend – bringing his tally to three goals in just two Premier League starts – City starlet Gabriel Jesus (9.2) is likely to be a frontrunner ahead of Monday’s Vitality Stadium clash.

In terms of frequency of goal attempts in the box, he is now faster than team-mate Sergio Aguero (12.8), who found himself on the bench for a second successive match against the Swans.

While the Samba star has gathered more than 88,000 new FPL managers since Saturday, 38,000 have jettisoned the Argentine.

City midfielders Kevin De Bruyne (10.6) and Raheem Sterling (7.8) could also benefit from Aguero’s plummeting stock. The Belgian schemer now has two goals and an assist in his last three, while the England winger has been the master of creative consistency, recording eight assists in his last nine.

Leicester City’s fragile backline is another worth targeting when considering where to place the armband. Manchester United’s comfortable 3-0 win over the Foxes at the King Power Stadium on Sunday means that Claudio Ranieri’s defence have conceded 10 over their last four

Next up for the Italian’s hapless rearguard is a trip to Swansea City, which promotes the Welsh side’s set piece specialist Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.4) as a strong differential captaincy option. The 8.2% owned Icelander now has three goals and a pair of assists under new manager Paul Clement, as well as three double-digit hauls at the Liberty Stadium.

Another alternative armband candidate is Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe (7.8), who scored a brace away to Crystal Palace at the weekend. The 27.8% owned veteran next faces a home tie against a Southampton side that has shipped 11 goals in their last six matches, with just one shutout earned over that spell.

Following their successful day out at Leicester, Manchester United once again face a favourable defence, when Watford drop by Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Hornets have just two clean sheets and have conceded 22 times on the on the road, which presents Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.6) with a golden opportunity to top this week’s poll. The Swede’s strike against the Foxes was his 15th of the season, and he has been the FPL most popular captain pick for seven successive Gameweeks.

Alternative United assets include Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.8), who racked up a 14 point return on Sunday, his biggest of the campaign, thanks to a goal, assist and maximum bonus returns.

Before Marco Silva took charge of Hull City, their trip to Arsenal this weekend would have cemented Alexis Sanchez (11.8)’s captaincy credentials. But in his four league matches in charge, the Portuguese has seemingly transformed the Tigers.

Over that period, Silva’s side have defeated Liverpool and Bournemouth, kept Manchester United at bay in a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford and proved a stubborn opponent to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, where they eventually lost 2-0.

Although the 35.8% owned Sanchez, who has 10 attacking returns in his last 12, is likely to be a popular selection, the considerable improvement from his Gameweek opponents could see him miss out on top spot.

Last week’s captaincy poster boy Lukaku could suffer the same fate: he is unlikely to find the Middlesbrough defence as obliging as the Cherries when Everton visit the Riverside Stadium next weekend. Aitor Karanka’s troops have conceded 14 goals in 12 home matches, earning four clean sheets.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of this week’s deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

My defence is in a bit of disarray, I have Amat, Evans and Smith. Other two are Kosc and Coleman.

I have the exact money for Amat to Alonso (-4)... worth it or should I double up on Everton with Baines?

With a defence of PVA Brunt Baines Pieters and Friend.

Is a -4 worth it to get Alonso this week? Can't see Burnley scoring but it's whether any of those 3 can keep clean sheets?!

My issue is that i'm now 100 off the top of my ML, so I need to up my game and ensure I maximise over these upcoming blanks and double gameweeks (not sure other members of the ML are fully aware such opportunities)...

    Current Team:

    Heaton
    Brunt Alonso McAuley
    Sanchez Eriksen PHillips Snodgrass
    Ibrahimovic Kane Lukaku

    Jaku Davies Friend Amat

    0 FT, 1.0m ITB

soooo... GW26 is a pretty straight-forward blank and can field a full 11 easily enough...

in preparation for the first major blank week and if GW28 was this week, my team would be:

    Jaku
    Brunt McAuley
    Snodgrass Davies Phillips
    Lukaku

    7 starters (possibly 6)

the blankers in my team for GW28:

    Heaton
    Alonso Friend Amat
    Sanchez Eriksen
    Ibrahimovic Kane

3 FTs until GW28 would allow me to bulk up a starting team to 10...

Amat / Friend >> Everton Def
    Ibrahimovic / Kane >> Carroll
    Sanchez / Eriksen >> Siggy

Then work sanchez or erkisen and ibra or kane back in the following 2 weeks, probably wont go anything like that... but its killed my morning at work thinking about it...

    Thoughts, or other proposed plans???

For me it depends on who you think are season keepers and what price you got for them.

I'd be looking to get rid of Sanchez next week for Sigurðsson and try to leave the Ibra move til after GW27 at home to Bournmouth.

There could be some upsets in FA Cup anyway so hold 2fts for just before GW28 kicks off.

Think it was tactical to attempt to cope with Everton's wing backs. Stan (if you look at his record) doesn't last the full 90 much. Seems to me Howe wanted someone more industrious

How many points to you reckon you can make up between now and end of season?

    I'm 170 and 185 behind in 2 ML's but don't reckon I catch them.

Other 2 I'm 85 and 115 behind which I reckon I can catch. Most have used all of their chips in these 2.

Seriously? Maybe I'm being over confident. There's 14 GW's left, for you that would only mean an extra 7 points each GW. Suppose it comes down to what players they have and how we all play the blanks, DGW's etc

A lot depends on if your opponents have used their chips and how aware they are of blanks/DGWs. Definitely realistic to catch the 85 and probably the 115 if you set yourself up well for DGWs

wow how on earth are you so far behind?! 85 points yes, anything over 100 would be very difficult. I overturned a 100+ plus deficit last season over around 8-10 GW's however wasn't able to maintain and got pipped over the last 3 GW's of the season. you can catch up but need to make sure you stay there!

    Need some input guys:

Did Antonio play offensive or was he fielded deeper?

James Morrison looks like a great differential/bench gem at 4.6m, but when Evans is back will he also be fielded deeper? (He played wing or nr 10 last game I believe?)

I'm looking to keep Ibra for Watford, theb do Ibra --> Costa for the Swansea game

Just feel Ibra hasn't been able to defend his price-tag the last 6 games.

    1. Park the bus
      • 13 Years

Antonio was still playing high up the pitch

Morrison I like but when Evans comes back it would concern me: Brunt could (hopefully) move into midfield which then means one of Morrison or Chadli would be dropped.

Ibra - ueh def keep for Watford, decision to make GW 26 whether him or Sanchez exits for Hazard or Costa.

    Any thing worth a FT?

    Grant (Heaton)
    Coleman, Alonso, Holgate (Brunt, Amat)
    Antonio, Alli, Sanchez, Phillips (Marney)
    Ibra, Kane, Lukaku

Gambling on a Holgate start over a West Brom cleansheet and so happy with defence. A few damp squibs in midfield, but nothing that can't wait until next week?

    Heaton Pickford
    Alonso *Coleman Pieters *Smith *Holgate
Sanchez Alli Eriksen *Phillips de Roon
    Ibrahimovic Costa *Lukaku

    0 FT 0.1 ITB.

    G2G this week?
Then Alexis > Hazard next week
Find a way to get Siggy and Brunt in for GW27/8
    Sound plan?

Could get this with a couple of trasnfers over the next few weeks, what do you think?

    Heaton / Pickford

    Alonso / Evans / Jones / PVA / Holgate

    Mane / Sanchez / Alli / Pedro / T.Carroll

    Ibra / Lukaku / Jesus

Looks like you have forgotten about blanks in 26 and 28...

Are these 7 players enough for GW28 if only the confirmed 3 matches are played?

    Foster (eve) / Jaku (SWA)
    Baines Coleman (WBA) Brunt (eve)
    Siggy (hul) Snodgrass (bou)
    Lukaku (WBA)

    Appreciate your thoughts!

      I reckon so.

The only thing you are not insured against is a Bournemouth cleansheet, but that seems unlikely at this point.
