The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 28

Eleven goals from the three matches – a hat-trick from a midfield differential and another double-digit return from Romelu Lukaku – with Liverpool’s attack yet to feature, Gameweek 28 looks destined to punch well above its weight.

Brought in by more than 143,000 ahead of Gameweek 28, second only to Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson among midfielders, Bournemouth’s Josh King is clearly the headline act so far.

It all started disastrously for King’s legion of new owners, with the Norwegian calmly side-footing his early spot-kick wide to register a -2 deficit.

However, he was to recover spectacularly, notching only the second hat-trick by an FPL midfielder this season, only falling short of matching Alexis Sanchez’ Gameweek 14 tally of 23-points due to his early penalty miss.

Deployed in a central striker role in recent matches, King was again played in the No 10 position behind Benik Afobe but found his route to goal nonetheless.

Incredibly, he has now produced eight goals in his last seven Gameweeks and looks an assured starter and vital source of goals for the Cherries for the remainder of the season.

The fixture list may stiffen, but King’s potential to go on providing points for a price tag of just 5.5 will surely drive an instant boom in ownership.

Already more than 10,000 have made the move ahead of the Gameweek 29 home meeting with Swansea City – only Spurs’ Harry Kane has seen more transfers since today’s 2pm deadline.

The availability such a budget midfield option, potentially playing in a striker’s role, could now raise further doubts on relying on a three-man forward line.

Southampton’s Manolo Gabbiadini will be targeted by many once he returns to action but, arguably, with such value available in midfield, there remains a strong case for the 3-5-2.

Certainly, Lukaku looks destined to remain part of our strike force, regardless of formation. He also played a key role in ensuring that the Gameweek 28 tallies will be higher than perhaps expected.

The top captain pick, with 767,000 trusting the striker with the armband, he once again proved his new reassuring level of consistency, particularly at Goodison Park.

Scoring for the fifth consecutive home outing, Lukaku produced a seventh double-figure return and, regardless of the frenzied clamour for Kane ahead of Gameweek 29, his role in our squads surely cannot be questioned.

With three of the next five at home – against Hull City, Leicester City and Burnley – Lukaku will remain locked in and will likely challenge as a captaincy contender over those matches.

While there was disappointment, with Swansea City’s Fernando Llorente failing to provide for his 378,000 new owners having limped off with a dead leg, it seems likely that Gameweek 28 could yet supply some significant scores – particularly if the Liverpool midfield can sparkle at Anfield on Sunday.

Having been flattened by the paltry returns from Manchester City’s midweek failings, Gameweek 28 has already provided unexpected fireworks with Messrs Mane, Coutinho, and perhaps Firmino, yet to take the stage to follow King’s lead.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Guttted with a 31-8, and a foolish firmino buy on Thursday. Have Mane (c) and Firm left. Current team and plan:

    Pick, Foster
    Coleman, Alonso, Baines, Brunt, 4.0
    Mane, Firmino, Eriksen, Siggy, Carroll
    Kane, Lukaku, Llorente
    4.5m itb

Firmino and Baines to Sanchez and Walker/Valencia. If I take Walker, I'll have 0.5 itb which is enough for gabbiadini.

    Thoughts? Thank you very much.

Bad luck... so far. Manè will still score well imo and Firmino may still play.
Your team is well set up going fwd so that's good!
No rush on the F > S move either... monitor Baines injury as he has a great fix this week. May be better off selling Brunt instead.

Get rid of Llorente, he is like a lightning. Occasionaly but with no consistent. Brunt out to Valencia.

First thought is that on Thursday, it wasn't a foolish move so don't beat yourself up.

Would wait on Baines news if you can, Brunt would be an out depending on injury for Baines.

That is an upgrade which isn't the worst. Going forward, a bit much money invested in defence for me. Tough calls if your looking for the top bracket Sanchez types. Just think Brunt is expendable going forward, if Baines is available for HULL

is that for free? don't think worth a hit.

need to have a think about sanchez. tough to know how arsenal will perform from here in, but i reckon, it'll be good, now that the pressure is off winning anything important

Thanks, axolotl. The two trades would be for a -4. I think Arsenal will score big against west Brom, and I think Sanchez could explode. My concern on defense is that if Baines is hurt, I really don't have a good thirsmdefender for next week.

Question to all you FPL veterans!
Fairly new to the game (2nd season) and wondering if its better to play the WC for gw30 during the int. break and capitalize it over 9 weeks rather than wait for the famous gw36 and make it count only for that dgw.
Pro: Can set a team full of players with good fixtures knowing which teams are eventually gonna have a dgw and make use of it for these extra games.
Con: might need to tweak your team prior to the dgw to get the 'all' 15 players in place.
    Thoughts?

There is no generic gw to play it. It is all dependant on YOUR situation. Personally speaking, I could have kept it for the so called bumper dgws, but my team would have been in a worse mess than it is now

I think it depends on your team now and whether you can achieve a good balance in the run up to GW37.

Personally I don't think a GW30 WC can adequately include Liverpool mids, Gylfi, Coleman, Lukaku etc for a good team now AND DGW34 players AND give 15 players on DGW37 (certainly not a nailed playing bench of DGWers).

In a nut shell, I don't think a GW30 WC can cover all the bases that some seem to be targeting (injuries, form, rotation are issues post WC) and that a sensible use of transfers over the next 7 weeks with a WC in GW36 with BB DGW37 will generate more points.

      1. TheCardinal
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 3 months ago

That is true. However there is no guarantee that all the 15 selected will end up playing both the matches anyway right? ( Like the city dgw) .
Also, players like Lukaku and mane having 1 cracking fixture might outscore say a double GW guy too who gives 4 points over 2 games ( like city dgw again).
There is risk in both. Only point being if my WC in 36 fails for whatever reason ..I don't have time to rectify anything..On the other hand a gw30 WC gives me the extra flexibility..Downside ofcourse being I will have a few key players in dgw having a single fixture which in all fairness as I mentioned might not be a big loss in the end?

        1. Hotdogs for Tea
          • 8 Years
          7 years, 3 months ago

i am sure that many will consider a few prime single GW players in any pre DGW WC ... but ... I like the idea of putting off this decision, i.e. the decision of whether to pick Gylfi, Mane, Coleman etc as a single GW player in GW37, until GW37, rather than decide now.

Also my bench in GW37 will be much stronger, nailed and full of DGW players for the BB (two premium keepers maybe?) which I would not select with a GW30 WC.

GW37 will be the biggest gameweek and therefore have the best choice of player and at the moment and am inclined to concentrate on that to get the best mixture of players without worrying about subsequent game weeks

Of course when I see the actual fixtures I will make a valued judgment accordingly

Cheers mate, still have Mane, Coutinho, Heaton and 13pts off the bench so hoping to recover from a torrid couple of weeks 🙂

Tough luck this week, I'll be praying for an Origi hatty!

Will definitely not be bringing him in... That is absolutely correct, owners got lucky 😀

Sanchez - Mane - Alli - Siggy.... No room for royalty there...

Not lucky, he had form before this game. Smart decision.

Maybe a smart decision, but it's still lucky... No matter how good a player's form is, it doesn't determine that in the next game he will score a hat trick... As a non-owner I'm also lucky that he failed the pen, otherwise would have been 3 points more for him 😉

I think there was an element of luck. Any other GW and not many people would have been bringing him in - only because of all the blanks. And this is the week he decides to get his biggest haul.

There were also quite a lot who wouldn't have got him had Phillips been declared fit.

Most owners would not be owners if it wasn't this exact game week, that's true too... Many got lucky that he scored a hatty in this particular fixture... What's not lucky in that...

The mind that stops at lucky when seeking to explain successes is bordering on narcoleptic 😉

Every human life is filled with coincidence, successful or not... If a positive coincidence can be deemed good luck, then there you have it 😉

Could be one of these ones you look at it in a couple of weeks if he keeps producing and his ownership rises and still nicely priced you think i'm going to have to get him now to be safe lol

What's the latest on Rose? I'm thinking Davies in for a few games if Rose is still sidelined...

Think he'll magically appear after the International Break. No player has ever become fit just in time for the international.

Did not expect this week to push me back inside the top 10k again, certainly not after that King penalty miss and Brunt benched. Holebas to Olsson for a hit was really a waste this week though

King said he'd score 4 in his next two so only 1 goal v Swansea sadly.

Isn't it better to do Bench Boost sooner rather than later (GW37) when there may be many teams who don't play their proper 11

Aguero, Phillips, Nyom> Kane, 7.7, Valencia for -8 to fix up my team worth it?
If so who's the best 7.7 option other than siggy?
