Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 33

Our last poll was dominated by two players, Sergio Aguero and Dele Alli, who garnered more than half of all votes.

This latest run-down is set to be another close call, with two Golden Boot-chasing strikers looking like stand-out captaincy picks for their favourable home encounters in Gameweek 33.

Romelu Lukaku’s (10.4) sensational form in front of his own fans carried on at the weekend, with his brace against Leicester City meaning he has scored 12 goals in his last seven Goodison Park encounters and 23 in total this season – more than any other player.

Next up is a visit from a Burnley side that has conceded 30 times and kept just three clean sheets in their 16 league road trips, which should ensure the 45.4% owned Belgian is among this week’s frontrunners.

Prior to a three-match injury lay-off, Harry Kane (11.3) was also on a hot streak, finding the net six times between Gameweeks 24 and 27 to bring his season total to 19.

With a promising 30-minute run-out under his belt in Tottenham’s 4-0 rout of Watford on Saturday, he looks primed for interest for the visit of an obliging Bournemouth defence to White Hart Lane this weekend – the Cherries have shipped 14 goals and kept just one clean sheet in their last six away matches.

Already more than 36,000 FPL managers have brought in the England striker and his 9.6% ownership is set to rise further before the next deadline.

But while Kane looks likely to be the main attraction among Mauricco Pochetinno’s troops, Spurs’ midfield trio of Dele Alli (9.1), Christian Eriksen (8.8) and Son Heung-min (8.4) are others likely to feature prominently.

Against Watford, Son was outstanding, with a 19-point haul from two goals, an assist and maximum bonus returns. Should he be retained in the starting XI to support Kane as expected, the South Korean looks a strong bet to add to his 11 goals for the campaign. Since Saturday he is the most bought asset, with more than 53,000 new FPL managers.

Alli also got on the scoresheet, bagging his 16th goal of the season against the Hornets, while his Danish team-mate also demands attention with five goals and nine assists in front of his own fans.

Sergio Aguero (12.8), who pipped Alli to the summit of Gameweek 32’s poll by just 2% of the vote, also looks an enticing armband option ahead of Manchester City’s trip to Southampton. The Argentine’s strike against Hull City on Saturday was his fifth in six starts. The Saints, however, have proved resilient at home in recent weeks, with two clean sheets in their last four St Mary’s encounters.

In addition, the City marksman has not been an explosive option of late, with his last double-digit FPL points haul coming in Gameweek 13.

Liverpool’s fatigued Brazilian duo, Philippe Coutinho (8.4) and Roberto Firmino (8.6), were preserved away at Stoke City, but with a goal apiece from the bench, they are among other strong candidates in our poll’s chasing pack.

They take on a West Brom side incapable of keeping a clean sheet at The Hawthorns of late, with their last shut-out on home turf arriving against Stoke in Gameweek 24.

A trip to Middlesbrough would have ensured Alexis Sanchez (11.6) competed for the summit – if it had taken place earlier this season when he was fielded as a central striker. But being stranded on Arsenal’s left wing over his last four matches has curtailed his threat markedly and he’s scored just once across that period. Potential backers will be keeping a close eye on the 26.8%-owned Chilean’s performance at Crystal Palace tonight to see if he can revive his output.

Theo Walcott (7.4) and Mesut Ozil (9.4) are two more Gunners’ assets that will be closely monitored at Selhurst Park after impressing in recent matches. The German playmaker has registered a goal and assist in his last two, while Waclott has two strikes over the same period.

Both are also strong differential options, given they have an ownership base below 10%.

Interest in Chelsea duo Diego Costa (10.5) and Eden Hazard (10.3), as well as Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.4), is likely to be tempered when they face each other in a tricky clash at Old Trafford on Sunday.

This could see some voters instead decide to back a differential, with Troy Deeney (6.9) among the best options as he prepares to host a Swansea City side that has conceded 10 goals in their last six. The 7%-owned Hornets’ talisman has scored four in as many home starts and being reduced to a bench role against Spurs on Saturday should mean he’s well-rested for the Swans’ visit.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 33 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article, offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Is Rojo a decent signing for DGW34 and the rest of the season?
    Thinking of Baines + Holgate -> Rojo + Holgate + 0.4

No obvious option for only 1 transfer.

      Siggy > JWP
      Alonso > Holgate
      Sanchez > Coutinho/Walcott

Don't really like any of them massively.

    A) Fletcher to Zaha (Play my AOO next week, do Llorente to Negredo week after)

    Jaku, Grant,

    Kane, Kaku, Llorente.

Two great rounds for me now, but I'm slightly worried over GW33. Team:

    06.ITB
    Pickford
    Alonso - Valencia - Brunt
    Alli - Eriksen - King - Sanch - Son
    Llorente - Luk

    Grant – Rondon - Mawson - Maguire

    1. Bench input? Only doubt is Brunt vs Mawson, Maguire if fit
    2. Transfer input? Considering Rondon -> Deeney, then WC in GW34
    3. Spurs triple input? Get rid of Erik for Cout? Got Erik for Cout due to his illnes uncertainty, regrets...

    Cheers!

    Heaton Grant
    Alonso Valencia Bertrand Davies Mawson
    Sanchez Alli Eriksen Sigurdsson King
    Lukaku Vardy Llorente

and I think of creating this team:

    Heaton Grant

    Kane Lukaku Anichebe

    Do you approve?

Is the state returned as a free bet or cash in this offer? It usually says explicitly that the refund is a free bet, but I can't see anything in the T&Cs on this one. Implies that if you lose your in play bet, you could withdraw that £50 stake back into your account.

On Kane vs Lukaku captaincy issue

Since GW12 (wba-bur 4-0), Burnley have conceded more than two goals only once (GW27 swa-bur 3-2). Since GW12 their most common away score is 1-2 (tot, mci, ars, wat, liv).

In the same time frame, Bournemouth have conceded three goals or more ten times, out of which five were away, including the 6-3 battering at Everton (GW24).

GW 32 ownership in top 10K:

        Lukaku -- 86.8%
        Kane -- 2.6 %

        just something to think about.

From which perspective? Making sure you have the highly owned player in the event you do not fall behind if he does well (the conservative approach), or having the differential to try and advance if he does well? I will have both (and therefore, expect both to blank! LOL).

the question was about who to captain.

Lukaku (c) can do a lot of damage to OR if you do not (c) him.

Right, I misread it. My mistake. To some degree, the same calculus applies to this decision -- captain Kane and Lukaku does well, you fall behind. Captain Kane and he outscore Lukaku, you jump way ahead. Risk scenarios.

Thats why im on Lukaku, although Kanes % will surely be 15-20% this week?

it will surely rise, but it will get nowhere near Lukaku levels.

plus, there's Lukaku's home form to consider . . . and the fact that Harry hadn't played for a month before last weekend and may not be fully match fit. and Spurs have surely proved they can win without him, so Poch may not push him so early on in his return.

yeah true, although i think he's pretty much not a risk now- looked hungry when he came n and could've easily got returns. If i didn't have eriksen and alli i would probably captain Kane, but don't want to put all my eggs in one basket

Ultimate set up to benefit. Kane somewhat of a differential against leaky side at home. High risk, high reward.

Kane for sure imo. Although I don't have him so it's between Kaku and Alli/Eriksen. Think Kaku nudges that one.

Think Jose has given us an insight of what to expect with rotation pretty soon? Surely Shaw has now played himself into this too. It could be a concerning few weeks for Utd owned players, especially if Utd drop more points in the league.
Jose could soon be putting all his eggs into the europa league basket.
Having Utd players for theyre DGW may be a poor choice.

Yep I am worried as a Valencia-owner. I still think Ibra will play (or at least be used) in both DGW matches - even if they won't get points again Chelsea

At the minute Ibra looks like the most nailed. That may change later too though.

I don't expect Shaw to play vs. Chelsea, let's put it that way. As for the DGW, the way I see it is the big names I'll have in my team (Ibrahimovic, Valencia) will at the very least get one of the games, in which case I'll be no worse off than with any other pick.

Agree regarding the Chelsea match. But if Valencia only gets the game against City, there are plenty of better and cheaper options imo.

Hmm, true. Since I already have Valencia though, I'm not going to spend a transfer (and likely a -4 given I have other priorities) getting him out before a double gameweek, even if he only plays once.

I am in the same boat. Not spending a transfer getting rid. But I probably wouldn't bring him in if I didn't own him.

Only United, Palace and Boro have a DGW in gw 34.

A lot of People have saved their WCs for GW 35/36.

This. At the moment I only have Valencia as a DGW34 player, I'll get Ibrahimovic as well given that he seems to be rotation-proof, and Benteke for this week. Maybe Valdes or a Boro defender too.

Many on here talking as if Kane brace/hattie is a done deal. I could understand the clamour to get him in if there was no other obvious captain pick and other Spurs attackers weren't delivering but neither are the case.

I have Lukaku, Alli and Eriksen. Am leaning towards captaining Lukaku and relying on my Spurs mids to get points which could easily be shared around.

No-one is talking about Benteke who has a double next week, is on pens and has a must win game at home to a Leicester side who shipped 4 yesterday and will be rotating again.

I'm going Vardy > Benteke and captaining Lukaku. Next week I'll do Sanchez & Carroll > Ibra plus form mid (Wally, Couts)

So, great. You have a plan and should follow it. There is no right or wrong, just preferences based on research and hunches. It's not like we are all involved in some political forum where we need to convince the other side that their views are off (or are we?).

To Kane or not to Kane?

    A) Kun to Kane and save trade
    B) Kun to Kane and Maguire to Gibson
    C) Kun to Ibra and Siggy/Sterling to Eriksen
    D) Something else

    Heaton
    Valencia / Davies / Alonso
    Sanchez / Alli / Sterling / Sigurdsson
    Kun / Lukaku / Origi

    Jakupovic / Stephens / Maguire / T. Carroll

2ft, .5itb, WC and BB available

Thanks Jazz, a couple of lucky points here and there.
Kane is a tough one. I'm almost tempted to get in Benteke for Origi and have a look around at some Middlesbough defenders for Maguire.
I'm not one to put all my eggs in one basket but Spurs are the form team and everyone is doing well.
