Crabtree Clinches FPL Crown

In yet another tense final day, Ben Crabtree has been crowned the Fantasy Premier League champion for 2016/17.

Nestled in the top ten since Gameweek 28, Ben – who made just a single four-point hit in the final 11 Gameweeks –
claimed top spot for the first time in the very final round of fixtures.

Trailing Uwais Ahmed by two points heading into today’s deadline, Ben went ahead before kick-off following Uwais’ four-point transfer hit.

That saw Liverpool pair Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho swapped in for Spurs’ Dele Alli and Leroy Sane of Manchester City – trades that would eventually prove decisive in the battle at the top.

Ben – with two free transfers – made equally radical transfer moves, shifting out Eden Hazard and Victor Anichebe for Bournemouth’s Junior Stanislas and Chelsea’s Diego Costa.

Starting on Ben’s bench, the Cherries midfielder was the makeweight for the gutsy signing of Costa, although, on the day, it was Stanislas who was to prove the unlikely hero.

He scored the opening goal of the day and, with Josh King in Ben’s starting XI but missing out through injury, those points from the bench helped him extend an early lead.

The Stanislas strike, together with assists from Christian Eriksen and Leroy Sane, saw Ben seize a 12-point advantage heading into half-time.

While Uwais quickly countered with early second-half goals from his signings Lallana and Coutinho, Ben edged further ahead with an assist from his own Gameweek 38 capture, Costa.

The tide looked to be turning back in Uwais’ favour when Cesc Fabregas produced one of two assists in the second period. However, Ben Davies’ strike for Spurs on 84 minutes in their 7-1 rout of Hull City was to deal the killer blow.

While Uwais edged the bonus points on the final whistle, the two awarded to Stanislas on Ben’s bench, introduced as the auto-sub for King, were to take him to a final tally of 97. That surpassed Uwais final tally by three points on the day, and by a five-point margin in the overall ranks.

A proven FPL manager of some pedigree, Ben bettered his previous best rank of 353rd back in the 2011/12 season to become the FPL’s latest champion.

Huge congratulations go to Ben from all at Fantasy Football Scout, and also to Uwais who fought a valiant battle to give us a dramatic final day.

Elsewhere, Bibek Thapa from Nepal stormed to a 99 – 68 victory over Polish manager Peter B to claim the FPL cup.

Many congratulations go to Bibek.

We will have further post-season coverage coming up in the next 24-hours, as we round up the winners of this season’s Scout Leagues and Cups.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Be interesting whenever we find the best pick and forget team of the year. Probably a good bit behind the overall winner.

Among the overall top 4k rank and top 200 of my country, my best fpl season ever, over the moon 🙂

Picked toby and coutinho for hazard and Gibbs, both with the goals, got 100 pts in the final gw 🙂

Pfft, tis all about luck anyway. Crap season. Year of the casual. Money is ruining the league. The ball they were using may as well have been a beach volleyball at times. How are we supposed to continue to do well at this game with all these unpredictable foreigners coming in for big money, forcing our young lads to settle for reserves. The chips have added nothing and have ruined the fun. The referees were out to get me. I just ate a dodgy spaghetti bolognese.

He'd heard that King was likely out. Along with Haz being a doubt to start he probably figured those moves were the best to give him a good starting 11 with someone half decent on the bench just in case - which proved to be the case. He gambled and won by looks of it.

Before we all go off and forget about FPL , I wanted to put down my thoughts about what I have learnt this season and want to carry forward with me. I know every season is different, and the same moves may work otherwise, but I would like to know everyone's else's views so we can all improve next year.
    1. Don't ignore defense. I have had 5 weeks of 3m+ ranks this year more so than any other. This was primarily due to high player prices. Looking back at those scores, the big name attackers Ibra, kun etc failed and the cheap defense got 1-2 each. Defense can back you up on a bad week. 5 playing defenders is a must, I played Amat WAYYY too much
    2. Don't be put off by good players when they're on 4YC. Your bench should be capable of handling a player missing one week. If the fixtures are good and the player is in form, buy.
    3. Don't be afraid to take hits early on. I started the season thinking "this year im gonna take zero hits", which led me to use my wildcard early in gameweek 4. We have seen the benefits of a late second wildcard this year, so the first wildcard should be left as late as possible, by then we know who's the must have goalkeeper, must have defenses etc.
    4. Look for talismans, not coverage. Pool for example had no clear talisman (well maybe Mane). Going Walcott over sanchez on coverage killed me early on. I almost went with Alli and Eriksen on my wildcard, thinking they could cover Kane points. I was talked out of it fortunately.
    5. Don't punt on new additions in the transfer window unless they're your world class players like Griezmann etc. I got burnt by Zaza on my wildcard
    6. Don't start taking crazy punts and going for differentials if you're doing bad, especially with the captains. Play your usual game, buy the players you want and you think will perform the best, irrespective of ownership.
    7. Don't sell players early on just cause they're falling in price. I sold Firmino to Barkley because Firmino was falling and Barkley rising. Firmino got a brace the next game and Barkley got 2 points. The markets are very volatile in weeks 1-8, so just ride it out.
    8. In general, the game favours midfielders. This goes for the BPS system, the clean sheet point, extra point for goal etc. This may have been more stark this year with the wealth of sub 5-7m midfield options whereas for the same 3rd striker range were abysmal. This maybe different next year if a breakout cheapie like Kane emerges.
    9. Captain away from home - A trend I've noticed recently, smaller teams when theyre away to a big team park the bus and are happy to lose 1-0 or 2-0 than get smashed. However, when a big team visits a small team, they're often willing to have a go which allows good attacking opportunities for the big team. Hence the home captain is not as much as a banker as we think.
    10. 4-4-2 - I've never played a 4-4-2 formation in any of my previous fpl seasons. I think with the way the prices are being inflated for the big name attackers, the defense plays a huge role. Someone like Walker at 5.5 offers much more than say a Snodgrass at 5.5. Have to consider this next year if prices are gonna go through the roof again.

    1. bojack
      • 7 Years
      6 years, 11 months ago

You're right about defenders. Walker at 5.5 was the first player I picked as he was way under priced.

I think those players who looked underpriced at the begining of the year: Walker, Coutinho, Lukaku proved so.

good pick on walker. I got burnt by his rotation with trippier at the end of last season so I avoided. I didn't own any spurs defense till I got vertonghen in my gw 35 wc and he got 0 cs after that.

This has probably been done already, but what are your highs and lows this season?

My low was definitely selling Alonso before his brace. Took me a while to get over that as I didnt need to do it at all.

High was Harry Kane over the last two weeks. He won me my mini leagues.

High: very few I'm afraid. I was ranked 2.2 million in week 19 and 19 weeks later I made it to 264k so I suppose that was a positive.

Heatster was one high and McCauley another.

Low: keeping Kun for so long, taking up my budget and ignoring Sanchez. Sunk me.

Season over. out with a 95pt Bang. Clawed back into the top 200K from well outside the 1M mark. Very happy.
Time to take Norwegian FPL seriously now. No rest.

What was your "Team of the Year" - the team that got you the most points?

    Mine was:

    Foster
    Alonso, Valencia, Pieters
    Sanchez, Eriksen, Firmino, Coutinho
    Lukaku, Aguero, Kane

    Pickford, Yoshida, Brunt, Alli

I never got around to owning Heaton. There was always a more important transfer to make and I always assumed West Brom's defense will start providing clean sheets eventually.

It's funny how even in his biggest failure of a season so far, Aguero still provided a lot of points.

Here is my top11 pro-rated across the season. Whether I had them for a few weeks or most of the season, these guys helped me across the line. I managed to catch the Allen and Phillips hype just as they were on their rolls, and swiftly got rid straight after.

Ake would've been a season-keeper had he stayed at Bournemouth.

    Heaton
    Alonso Brunt Ake
    Sanchez Alli Sane Allen Phillips
    Kane Lukaku

Nice 🙂 Love the Allen, Brunt and Ake inclusions, I owned all three but at the wrong times!

My top "Average Points Scored for me" team:

      Cech - Heaton
      Coleman - Gibson - Yoshida - Alonso - Walker
      Sane - King - Alli - Eriksen - Walcott
      Jesus - Aguero - Benteke

    Goooooood morning all!

The excitement of yesterday looks to have calmed down. I've just picked up a signed Jose Enrique Liverpool shirt as my prize from work - not ideal as a Man United fan but at least he was a decent FPL prospect for a short time a few seasons back! 🙂

I finished 1 point ahead of 5k in the end - 4,935. I've never been in the top 5k at any point in any season so to clinch it on the last day with a score of 100 is fantastic and a great way to end the season.

Thanks everyone for answering my posts this year - I've probably not been around as much as I'd like but still frequent here often enough.

Cheers to everyone who has watched the Scoutcast as well. I'm sure I'm not everyone's first choice to be on but hopefully I've improved this year in my first full season on the show and if Mark will have me back next year I'll try and improve some more!

    Enjoy your summers 🙂

Thanks you too, been enjoying both the scoutcast and the Let's talk, which surely has contributed to my fine top 1k rank this season. Like many others on here I'm so into FPL that I dont need advice really, it's more the discussions and different likes/dislikes about topics that helps imo. You are good at keeping an open mind, and dont read too much into past stats and trends (like this player always do well here or there, this team always do bad or good when that situation occurs etc) which many other "smart" fpl'ers tend to do too much imo. So thanks for that, and enjoy your summer 🙂

That's exactly what I'm trying to do with the streams - just open the discussion. There's plenty of places that already give advice 🙂
