The Numbers Game – Manchester City

Next up in our summer series of team-by-team analysis of the 2016/17 campaign are Manchester City.

We start by checking out the team performance levels over the previous campaign to look for any trends of improvement before assessing the Citizens’ standout individuals ahead of the 2017/18 season.

The arrival of Pep Guardiola helped the Etihad side up their points total from 66 to 78 last term, yet they finished some 15 points off the summit for the second successive campaign, claiming third position in the Spaniard’s first year in charge.

City also improved their goal tally, from 71 to 80, which was again the third best on offer, six behind Spurs at the summit.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Who would you rather have Alonso or Willian? I know ones a Defender and ones a Midfielder but their both priced @ 7m and I'm thinking about just going with Alonso and no Chelsea attackers, just feel he's a much better option.

Alonso last Season: 30 Starts, 6 Goals, 3 Assists, 15 Clean Sheets

Willian last Season: 15 Starts, 8 Goals, 2 Assists, 6 Clean Sheet (obviously Clean Sheets not worth a lot to Willian as well)

Considering Chelsea didn't get many cleanies at the end of last season, I'd go willian.
Can't be banking on attacking returns alone from Alonso

If it's a 3-week punt ahead of an early WC, then I can see the argument for Willian.

But for long-term, Alonso all day long.

Alonso if you don't intend to wildcard early - Definitely more nailed on when Hazard is back

Not putting Alonso down, but not tactically astute to start with that much money on a defender. You can always get him in if/when he starts scoring regularly.

Anyone running with defence rotation pairings? At the moment I'm going with LEI-NEW-WAT 4.5 defenders, keen to see if anyone else is doing something similar.

It depends. If he's played in at least a couple of friendlies before GW1, I'd be more inclined to get him in. Lack of match practice will put me off.

He's travelling to Germany for the game against Hertha Berlin apparently. (Unless I'm mistaken?)That means he'll be available for the Audi Cup too. I think he's very much on track to start GW1.

Could I get a few opinions on my team please:

    Foster (4.0)
    Kolasinac Trippier Cedric (Tomkins 4.0)
    KDB Willian Mkhi Ramsay Phillips
    Lukaku Kane (4.5)

Unsure on Phillips, so it leaves me with the below:

    A) Phillips & Lukaku
    B) Ayew/Lanzini/Zaha & Lacazette
    C) Ayew/Lanzini/Zaha & Jesus

Any other advice would be much appreciated!

Personally don't like 433 but that's just my opinion, this is probably the best way to play it however. Just one thing: you can swap Mee for a 4.0. No point having 3 starting players on your bench

I believe this is gonna be one of my final drafts: 3-4-3

    Gk: Begovic, Ryan

Def: Tomkins, Trippier, Kompany, Francis, Naughton

Mid: Alli, Coutinho, Willian, Ramsey, RTC

    Fwd: Jesus, Kaku, Gabb

    Reasoning:
Gk: fixtures for first 10 gw are decent
Def: want a cry/bourne/swansea rotation for good fixtures
    Mid: seeking a balance team
Fwd: two premium strikers + gabb due to good fixtures

Problem: No Kane, no solid captain choices out of Kaku.

    Any thoughts?

Don't think Tomkins is nailed now that they've signed Riedewald.

Thanks, I'll monitor this. If I can't find a cry 4.5m starter I'll have to change the entire 4.5m rotation.

I have similar problems with captain.
3 4 3 who would say that was out of the box until this season.
Gone to and fro with 3 4 and 5 in my backline.

      Similar side but playing 4 4 2
Foster (Elliot) Different but the same.
      Rudiger Trippier Bertrand Lindeloff (Yedlin)
      Cout Alli Zaha Pedro (Carroll)
      Kaku Jesus (4.5)

Maybe an extra defender (Bertrand/W Brom)

        Who's your other midfielder?

Only premium keeper people should consider this season is Courtois as he's .5 cheaper than any Chelsea defender.

This is coming from a guy who had Joe Hart back when he was £7m mind you

Courtois doesn't get many save points vs DDG though, right?

Not sure how nailed Lindelof will be.

All about the clean sheets and Courtiois outscored De Gea last season

When was this? Joe Hart being 7M. Sorry, this is only my second season.

For those rotating 4.5 DEFs... who are you going with?

    Stumped.

Dunk is nailed and has some favourable games, Mee is also nailed, Danny Simpson too. I don't have this just off the top of my head thinking who is nailed on.

Not seeing much love for Salah, what's everyone's thoughts on him? I think he looks sharp and has a point to prove after the Chelsea era.

Pool attackers will share points a lot. Mane probably the safer pick at just $0.5 more.
