The Numbers Game – Southampton

Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, offering in-depth team-by-team analysis are Southampton. A side that carry extra significance ahead of the new campaign given their exceptionally kind early fixtures.

To get underway, we’ll analyse performance at a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements. We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for potential targets ahead of next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

In addition, we’ll also focus on any specific periods of interest brought about by tactical changes or breakout Fantasy performances – in this case we’ll focus on the Saints’ home/away displays, investigating a trend that saw them score just 17 goals in front of their own supporters.

Southampton finished in sixth spot under Ronald Koeman back in 2015/16 – a total of 63 points was just three points behind Manchester City in fourth. But the Dutchman’s decision to move to Everton proved detrimental to their prospects, with replacement Claude Puel struggling to maintain those standards.

Despite claiming eight place, Southampton bagged just 46 points and found the net on 41 occasions – a tally that bettered only the bottom five and well behind the 59 strikes under Koeman.

I already have Willian and Austin, it's difficult to make a balanced team that covers all top 6 clubs and still somehow have Alonso.

Do you need to cover all 6 top clubs ? I've no liverpool or Arsenal and not worried. Double up on spurs and Chelsea tho.

I think it's best to do so. One of those is surely going to struggle at some point and it's a very good GW1 tactic to cover them all and jump ships when they do. It's also a good tactic to spread the value, which means Alonso and Kane aren't really necessary GW1 picks, because their alternatives (Lukaku, Aguero, other premium wingbacks) probably aren't going to struggle as much as the cheap punts you've chosen, but can't afford to replace.

    Any thoughts appreciated!

    Foster - Elliott
    Trippier - Cedric - Dunk - Francis - 4.0
    Coutinho - KDB - Willian - Tadic - T. Caroll
    Lukaku - Kane - Austin

KDB instead of Alli for City cover, and Austin + Willian --> Rooney + 6.5 mid after GW6.
Only problem I see right now is the defence and maybe too much Southampton? Cheers for the help!

Does anyone fancy giving me some advice on a few seemingly irrelevant transfers? The team I was going to roll with for GW1 was this:

    Foster
    Alonso Trippier Bertrand Lindelof
    Coutinho Mkhi Willian
    Kane Aguero Austin
    (Elliot, Hünemeier, Milivojevic, T.Carroll)

However, I am getting rather worried about the status of Lindelof and whether he'll even start. In that light, I'm strongly considering transferring out Foster and Lindelof, and replacing them team-for-team with De Gea and Hegazi. Now, I know for fact that Hegazi is not nailed at all, but he's looked promising in the off-season. I'm also fully aware that, if they were both to be nailed, Foster + Lindelof is a far better duo than De Gea and Hegazi. However, I'd much rather my West Brom defensive coverage end up not playing GW1 than my Man Utd defensive coverage. Either way, I'd be quite alright with Milivojevic playing GW1 at home to Huddersfield.

So, in short, do you think given my team (which I'm not looking for critique on unless you really feel the need!), it'd be worth making those transfers for sheer peace of mind that my Man Utd defensive coverage will definitely start?

Do it, for now. Your team will change multiple times in the next 2-3 weeks.

    2. QGOONER
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

Appears you're putting all your eggs into one basket. All strikers, including Kane and Aguero, are capable of blanking for consecutive weeks and the defense is too heavily invested (yes consider binning Lindelof until proven otherwise)

Invest more in your MIDs. 4-5 usable MIDs are going to be useful in the long run

Better sweeping, better cross collector, better distribution, could argue better shot stopping (but it's very close)

Neuer has revolutionised goalkeeping, de Gea has not

          1. fedolefan
            • 10 Years

Yeah, I'm not sure how one can say he's better than DDG at cross collecting, shot stopping. DDG doesn't make too many errors there and I'm sure Neuer gets a pass for his mistakes since they come in a league we don't follow. Distribution probably.

Neuer makes more mistakes I feel but commands his box much better. He's also a leader and has been vital into winning the biggest trophies in the game. Buffon another.

Thoughts on this squad folks? Can switch between 4-4-2 and 4-3-3 depending on fixtures.

    Forster Elliot
    Alonso kompany trippier Dawson Rangel
    Sane Willian Ramsey Milli Carroll
    Kane lukaku chicarito

Well balanced - plan for when you want Alli or Mane or both?

The midfield is the area where you are punting but it could work. Rest look v nice.

Cheers bud. No clear plan in sight, just hoping one of Kane or lukaku flop so I can dump them 🙂

I prepared to risk it - too many other player I want.
Could be that he does not score as highly like Bellerin and Toby last year- I doubt it though.
First sign of a haul and going to 7.1 and he is in.
