The Numbers Game – Swansea City

Swansea City are the next side to be assessed as part of our in-depth team-by-team analysis series for members.

We start by checking in on the team statistics in an attempt to spot trends or improvements over the past 12 months before we shift to analyse player data, as we attempt to narrow the field ahead of the new campaign.

Having been ensconced in the security of mid-table in 2015/16 – claiming 47 points to finish in twelfth position – the Swans were left floundering last season. With just three wins in the opening 19 Gameweeks of 2016/17, the Welsh outfit looked doomed at the midway point until the arrival of Paul Clement.

Appointed as successor to Francesco Guidolin, the new manager chalked up four victories in his first six fixtures to steer his side out of the drop zone. Swansea ultimately clinched fifteenth spot on 41 points – seven clear of relegation, scoring 45 goals.

    Arsene Wenger Updates

Francis Coquelin limped off in the first half of our Emirates Cup opener against Benfica on Saturday.

The French midfielder missed the following day’s defeat against Sevilla through injury and, after the game, Arsène Wenger revealed the latest on the 26-year-old.

    on Francis Coquelin…
He looks like he has a scan tomorrow and I don’t think he will be available for the weekend. He doesn’t look bad, but he will not be available. [It is an] ankle problem, ligament.

    on Kieran Gibbs…
He has been sick over the weekend. He was supposed to play for the reserves on Thursday night at Boreham Wood but couldn’t play. At the moment he’s not available.

on whether he sees Gibbs’ future at Arsenal…
He has one year to go [on his contract].

on whether Mustafi will miss the Leicester game…
It depends. Mustafi has come back today and will have tests during the week. For the weekend [Community Shield], he will be short.

on what the latest is on Lucas Perez…
He is injured at the moment.

on whether Lucas is likely to feature during the season…
    Yes.

on Lucas’ agent saying his shirt number was given away without consultation…
Well look, we sort that out internally.

Should get forward the most of the two, loves to take long shots and creates good chances.

Yes, but also costs 2.5 more. Those 2.5 mean the difference between Morata and Kane, or Lanzini and Alli/Eriksen/Mané.

Don't get either then. I'm not really considering Pogba myself, but I think he's a much better FPL option than Herrera if you really want one of the two.

Herrera also the most likely to be benched if Mourinho decides all three aren't needed for a particular game and reverts to 4-2-3-1

No evidence, just how I think we'll play this season. 4-3-3 in tougher/away games, 4-2-3-1 when we may need an extra attacking player to unlock a tight, 10-man defence.

May be that Matic is dropped for those games, but Herrera works so hard on the pitch that he does seem to get rested a fair amount ahead of important games.

I think Pogba is the better FPL option.

But Herrera at 5.5 can't be overlooked IMO it gives me a lot of options.

I can comfortably bring in Lukaku Kane and Aguero

I mean, I really hope you're right - but I feel there are better options than Herrera at the same price. I've got Fraser from Bournemouth in my team and I'm a Utd fan 😆

I agree - he's one of my favourite players.

However, in some games, e.g. Burnley at home, we may sacrifice the extra man in midfield in favour of an extra attacking player (Mata) to play the no.10 role to unlock the tight 10-man defence.

I think that player would be Herrera, but to be fair it could also be Matic.

They won't and don't need to play 4231 with Matic and Herrera every game. That's only gonna be used against tougher opponents. Since Pogba is guaranteed to start, it's not hard to imagine Herrera's time will be less with Matic joining.

It's Mourinho we are talking about here.

Fellaini and Carrick all play the gosling midfielder role.

Not that many actual mids to compete with Herrera

                He's on free kicks ATM.
                Only £7.5m
                He's on pens

Guranteed starter, did very well in pre season and will play striker. Everton are an attacking team and Rooney is known for scoring against big clubs.

And he was the 8th fastest footballer in 2016.

I have sources for all those arguments I've been posting around the place won't do it but all my points are confirmed as of now.

                    He is guranteed.

He wants a place in the World Cup which means he has to play every game and be motivated to impress if he wants to earn his place.

He wouldn't jkin Everton on a significant pay cut if he wasn't a starter he woukd staying at United where he started around half of games and Mourinho wanted him to stay on his immense contract.

This Everton move means he has ambition to be a top striker and will not benched if he has a bad game.

Myhill if Forster is injured/rotated. So either way you're guaranteed WBA's keeper.
None are 100% nailed on 4.0 but Elliot at Newcastle looks the most likely.

    RMT

Last year finished top 4k. This year I fancy changing things up a bit. 5 at the back. I prefer, say, Walker or Bertrand to Zaha.

    Forster (Eliot)
    Bailly Trip Jones Walker Bertrand
    KdB Coutinho Willian (Carroll, RLC)
    Kane Jesús (Quaner)

I'm a Man Utd fan - highly likely that Jones starts the season.

    Thoughts? Thanks 🙂

You think Lukaku will be a dud early on?

      1. El Lobito 10
        • 6 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

No - he will do as well, but I feel Jesus and Kane are better prospects.

City's preseason, their new attacking play and their penchant for obliterating teams early on puts Jesus ahead.

Kane as default and lastly, because the jury is still very much out on Utd's ability to become a high scoring side.

What about you? I may downgrade Kane to lukaku, even if it scares the sh*% out of me.

Arsenal have won one out of six opening day matches at home, a run including defeats to Aston Villa and West Ham.

      Decent at the mo.
Pied - short term 1 or 2 games most ? , then good
Austin - watch Saints last preseason game
Hegazi - rather get Mee imo
      Hart - Dunno

Better options than Lindelof, who's been in and out of preseason, like Trippier for example.

    1. Rash

Imo yes as I think United will now play 433 instead of 4321 so only 2 spots now instead of 3

      Probably. Look below.

    3. Skalla

Yes will effect him the most unless he plays wide instead of Rashford, so not a good FPL option until we know for sure!

  28. Rover

Seeing the Matic transfer in a slightly different light (i.e. focus away from just Pogba), what does that mean for United wingbacks? Supposing they go with 4 at the back, in a 433 or a 4231, we'll have:

    Valencia Lindelof Bailly Darmian
    Herrera Matic
    Mkhi Pogba Rashford
    Lukaku

as the most likely starting XI, with possible rotations around Mkhi and Rashford with Mata, Lingard and Martial on the sidelines.

But if they were to go with 5 at the back (or 3 depending on how you see it), then in a 3412, we'd have:

    Lindelof Bailly Jones
    Valencia Herrerra Matic Lingard
    Pogba
    Lukaku Rashford

Or in a 3421 we'd have Mkhi next to Pogba and Lukaku up front.

This probably makes Darmian an even bigger rotation risk (already with Blind and Shaw). But is it likely to be 4atb for PL and 5atb for greater defensive solidarity in cup matches?

    1. Rover
      • 7 Years

Also regarding Mkhi/Rashford minutes if wingbacks are used. One of them will be dropped.

Is Danilo a decent 5.5 option into City wingback potential? Walker a bit pricey

Surely at cost of nearly £30m and having played 41 games for Real Madrid last season, and wants more gametime, not going to be left too often on bench allowing of course for Pep's rotation plans.
