Development Squad – Heatmaps Preview

Update Four of our summer development programme is imminent, so I thought I’d bring you an early preview of the new feature introduced in this round of changes – the Fantasy Football Scout heatmaps.

While you may be familiar with the use of heatmaps in football as a means of displaying player touches in a single match, we wanted to go further.

As our members know, we enable our Opta data to be displayed per match, across the season or indeed over a number of intervals. These include all home or away matches, or even the last two, four and six matches or Gameweeks – home or away.

By ensuring that our heatmaps could also be built and displayed for these intervals, we were able to increase their scope significantly.

Firstly, this meant that would could create meaningful heatmaps for events other than just touches.

Because we could visualise data over a group of matches, or even the season, there was some real value in mapping events such as shots, chances created and passes received, among others.

These really came alive when we built heatmaps into our comparison tools.

This enables us to view patterns in player behaviour – analysing queries such as “where has Alexis Sanchez received passes in his last four home matches, compared with away matches”.

The answer is below.
Alexis Sanchez Passes Received Last Four Home vs Last Four Aways
members

As you can see, Sanchez received the majority of his passes out on the left flank over his last four away matches, while he took up more central positions when receiving the ball at the Emirates.

This is the kind of analysis that is now possible, confirming information that has been difficult to decipher or collect previously – other than by watching all of Sanchez’s previous matches, of course.

But our heatmaps can also be applied to teams and, in this way, Fantasy managers can analyse pairings created by forthcoming fixtures and attempt to identify areas of strength and weakness.

For example, AFC Bournemouth travel to West Brom for Gameweek 1 and, analysing their heatmaps for last season (all matches), we can find some areas of potential for the visitors.

West Brom Challenges Lost vs Bournemouth Successful Take-ons – 2016/17 Season
members

West Bromwich Albion’s lost challenges are mapped on the left, indicating that they were more susceptible to being beaten by attackers on the right-side of their defence.

Equally, if we look at Bournemouth’s map of successful take-ons – when a player beats his defender – we see that the Cherries are particularly strong down their left flank.

We can therefore deduce that West Brom’s Craig Dawson may be targeted by Ryan Fraser and Charlie Daniels in this match and that they may get some joy in this area, perhaps even some Fantasy returns.

These are just two examples of how the feature can be used to improve your analysis of teams and players.

I’ve also produced a preview movie showing further cases and illustrating the heatmaps in action.

Heatmaps are currently on our test server and will be made available to our members as part of Update Four, which is due to go live later this week.

          Downgrade to 4.5.

Not a fan of Rooney personally. But I understand why you're having two cheaper strikers - really strengthens the rest of the team.

          Danilo not long term playing.

You don't need to spend so much on your bench. Free up the 1-2m to upgrade other positions.

Rooney is finished. Lindelof is not nailed.

Austin I feel is a 50/50 for starting. I've seen Mkhi in pre season and he's looked really good, I would hope him to start behind Lukaku, but with Matic arriving, Pogba might be pushed further up.

Ayew is a great enabler. It's a risk, but fair play if you stick with him. I think your defence is too expensive, I would downgrade Alonso but if you want him then maybe Bailly -> 4.5 then upgrade Fraser to Zaha.

Bit cheap in defence in my opinion so maybe downgrade Willian to upgrade there- Dawson's a good pick, as is Ake. I wouldn't get Morgan. Also Pied would only play 1 gwk if he does play so I wouldn't pick him.

My current team, key players dropped due to pre-season.

My current team, starting 11 for the opening weeks is:

Foster, Yoshida, Trippier, Zabaleta, Ince, De Bruyne, Alli, Willian, Chicarito, Lukaku, Kane.

Originally I had Cedric as nailed on for the opening weeks, but seeing as he's had a longer lay off for the confederation cup, he's not guaranteed to start so I've opted for Yoshida who I'd say is guaranteed. Trying to take advantages of those early Saints fixtures.

Zabaleta is in because for me he's the best 5.0 out there. The opening fixture is a doozey, but past that, West Ham look likely to do well.

Ince is in for his pre-season form, a.
    t 6.0 he's my cheap long shot.

Willian is in because as a starter he really should be around the 9.0 mark with his dribbling, set pieces, assist and goals potential in a championship team, as soon as Hazard is back, he'll be dropped though, I probably will have wild carded by then.

Alli and Kane are my last debated players. Spurs aren't fit yet and Kane is a notorious slow starter. I'm tempted to play Jesus and Salah in favour of these two (Not Coutinho as if he is forced to stay I see his head not being right for a while) these two changes would also allow me to upgrade a couple of defenders to Bailly and Kolasinic who I like. This is my debate at the moment, Kane and Alli to swap or not.

Mostly like - question marks over Arnautovic (one to watch at this stage) and Fabregas (rotation risk). Think there is more value in getting an 8/6 million combo for these two - perhaps Pogba & Philipps?

Like the Danilo pick a lot at this early stage as well.

Fabregas as Danilo are picks for the opening games I think they will play them until other players are fit again ( think I will use my WC in the early stages ) maybe free up some money to do Arnau -> Mhki then
