Fantasy Premier League Rate My Team Surgery

Welcome to the first of this summer’s pre-season Rate My Team Surgeries.

These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1. Each time one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team will put forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start the discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing our squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my balanced 3-4-3 selection.

My Team

Key Concerns

My lack of Manchester United or Chelsea defence is a concern as both sets of players are highly owned. It is the gaping Red Devils shaped hole in my back line that is my biggest issue as Chelsea’s fixtures are not great after their opener at home to Burnley, while Jose Mourinho’s troops early matches look superb. David De Gea or Eric Bailly are targets – although each will need funds to be freed up elsewhere.

De Gea could be a possibility as I’m not wholly convinced by my cheap as chips West Brom goalkeeper double up. Would I be better off going for the Spaniard, or indeed the save points that perhaps West Ham stopper Joe Hart or Watford’s Heurelho Gomes may offer early on?

The third striker spot is a tough one this season. Southampton’s Charlie Austin is there as a place holder currently and I’d be particularly keen to hear arguments for other strikers priced at 6.5 or below or even why I should invest more in this berth.

Nailed On Picks

Flexibility is driving my initial selection – and that for me is why Harry Kane is nailed on. Downgrading an injured or poorly performing Kane is easy, upgrading to the game’s most expensive striker could require surgery or an early wildcard. I’m also not convinced that Dele Alli or Christian Eriksen will match last season’s golden boot winner’s output.

Kevin De Bruyne looks the best attacking Manchester City option for me and is 0.5 cheaper than the only other one I’d consider – Gabriel Jesus. The Belgian looked particularly commanding in City’s 3-0 rout of Spurs in pre-season.

One of Nathan Ake or Charlie Daniels looks essential for me. Bournemouth defenders are among the best FPL resources due to their command of attacking points. Clean sheets are merely a nice extra for them. Both this pair appeal, but currently Ake has the edge as one of the best defenders last season for points per match. He was also 2016/17’s best player in terms of baseline bonus points.

As a Brighton fan I’ve got to have some representation and I believe defence is the main place to find it. With two assists full back Markus Suttner has impressed in pre-season and has even been fielded on the wing at times during matches. Lewis Dunk is another option here  – but his ill discipline concerns me. Also talk of his bonus potential hinges on clean sheets – which I’m not convinced my team will excel at in the top flight. Suttner’s attacking potential gives him the edge for me.

Romelu Lukaku is going nowhere with United’s fixtures and his strong pre-season form. Don’t even attempt to persuade me to ditch him.

The Punt

John Stones is my main punt. I originally had United’s Victor Lindeloff in this place but I’m concerned that he may be eased into Premier League action and miss the odd game at the start. City’s Stones could also be a rotation risk, hence the punt, but with wingbacks set to be deployed I can see him earning starts at first and if pre-season is anything to go by he could also bring me attacking returns. Already he has scored twice and assisted another goal during pre-season. If he can carry on that form his lowly 3.6% ownership and 5.5 price tag could rocket.

Formation

I’ve tried to construct a team around a four at the back formation but it just doesn’t sit right with this dullard. I favour the attacking prospects of midfielders and strikers over the dull ache of disappointment when a defender loses a clean sheet.

I’m currently favouring 3-4-3 but am willing to swap to 3-5-2 should five viable midfielders emerge and the third striker well dries up completely.

As the article says this is aimed at sparking discussion and the main aim of this thread is for you to share your RMTs and give advice.

I do hope though that some of the issues in this article do chime with your own ahead of GWK 1.

I'm canvassing the moderator team now in the search of someone who favours a heavy hitting frontline or a four at the back formation. All being well we should be able to do a follow up article with that team as well in the run up to the season's start.

I like the Stones pick, although I think he's overrated as a player he'll most probably play and is a cheap route in. I currently have Alonso, regardless of Chelsea's fixtures I'm struggling to put a team together without him in there.

I like J Rod for the cheap striker just because of his goals and assists per minute last year but Charlie Austin is a good shout so long as he nails down the position.

KDB looks a brilliant assetsasset but is there a reason you'd not even consider Aguero for your Man City coverage?

Like it aside from Stones. Much prefer Betrand for the better fixtures, attacking potential, nailed-on-ness and arguably better defence

The more people who ignore Stones - the better he becomes as a punt. 🙂

😀 It just seems so un-dullard. And quite frankly bordering on risky. 3-5-2 has happened pre-season, sure. But I don't think that gives us any indication at all what Pep will start with early doors. And even if it does, Fernandinho as a RCB to accommodate Yaya in midfield seems a very Pep move

Don't like the first two fixtures. Think he'll do ok for his price if they don't sign another. On the whole though I think Brighton will struggle for goals - that's why I've gone for a cheap bit of everything player like Suttner.

IMO you could easily have done a fifth mid like JWP, downgraded Austin to a cheapo, and upgraded your goalies to DDG and Hart. What do you think, Jonty?

Nice Jonty, although i have had to fight the Kane urges to make the balance of my team work. Kane downgrade to Jesus, in a front line with Kaku and Abrahams has allowed me to upgrade Foster to DDG and Pied to Bertrand.

I agree that BOU def are fantasy gold but their GW1-6 fixtures are putting me off at the moment, so aim to swap SOU->BOU defenders when the fixtures become more favourable. Do you sit in the camp that believes its the year of the wing backs and 5-2-3? Guessing by the dullard statement at the end its probably a no

Brighton rotate reasonably well with Bou. Ake bench GWK 3 with Suttner coming in.

I don't see the value in a 5.0 defender you'll bench in 50% of the first four gameweeks, Jonty. I'd much rather have Yoshida/Cedric for SWA-WHU-hud-WAT than Ake/Suttner for wba-WAT-wat-WBA

Nice midfield. Personally I'm holding fire on too much faith in Spurs attack but if they gel- Alli will be in the mix,

Amazing what going Kaneless can get in midfield.

Keep an eye on Coutinho transfer moves....looks solid though - apart from Blind....huge rotation risk. I think for security you need to spend more for a Man Utd def.

I'd say you've wasted at least 1m in defence. Could easily lose Bellerin or Cedric (may not start) for a 4.0/4.5 and put some more cash in midfield

^ a lot of cash in defence that could be better used

If you think of Alonso as being in midfield then your team is:
      Bellerin Cedric Trippier
      Alonso Tadic Pogba Willian Zaha
      Kane Lukaku Austin

      Solid team.

Because Cedric might not be fit yet you could swap Ballerin to new guy Kolasinac£6m and upgrade to Bertrand or another sure start 5.5m defender?

      1. Captain Roberto
        • 6 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

p.s. then you can play about with the 3x£7m midfield to create a more varied cost balance that would allow you to move for hot players without having to make more than one transfer.

Its the way of it that you set a team then decide to change one player and start a cascade of changes ending at a different team all together lol

But you seem to be a Southampton fan so I say go with your favourites 🙂

Pretty settled on this now I think...

    Foster Myhill
    Trippier Bertrand Dawson (Francis Suttner)
    KDB 9.5 Coutinho Zaha Carroll
    Lukaku Jesus 4.5

The premium mid slot is killing me. I wanted Alli, Eriksen or Mane there, and probably had all 3 of them ahead of KDB too, but I'm more than concerned by Wembley and the first 2 fixtures. The worry with Mane is rotation around the CL ties gw2 and the potential of Salah.

Starting to consider Ozil for that juicy gw1 fixture. Also possibly Willian for the same reason, with plans to upgrade. Thoughts?

I'm always wary of WBA strikers - Pulis has a habit of killing off their threat and transferring it to tall centre backs.

I think Dawson will get you more points than JRod for less money.

      1. Captain Roberto
        • 6 Years

Alternatively, there is a focus on the defender's goals because their attack is so poor it stands out more. Defensively they are not really very good for clean sheets, which is where defenders consistently get their points. Rodriguez scored goals when fit. With Rondon doing all the donkey work he could be allowed freedom to play. Pulis has said he really likes him and has been chasing him so he looks like a sure starter in the £6m budget striker slot. West Brom look to have good fixtures too for a decent run off the mark.

        Options options! 🙂

Hi! So with your insight and my preferences, I have landed on this:

    Foster

    Trippier - Bertrand - Tomkins

Coutinho - Willian - Redmond - De Bruyne

    Austin - Lukaku - Kane

Subs: Elliot - Carroll - Mee -Hünemeier

What do you think? Kane is the big question imo, he really is a slow starter and with both Lukaku and Kane the funds really is eaten up, and that is not including any City players who looks extremly sharp. Downgrading Kane to Jesus will free up 2 mill who can be spent on defence,

Kane --> Jesus and Tomkins --> Azpi?

Looks good. Keep an eye on Tomkins pre season though - could be a rotation risk.

Also Hünemeier will only play if Dunk/Duffy are out...so that'll be rare. With a large ownership for a 4.0 def I can see a price fall come wildcard time gwk 3-4...maybe switch to a lower owned non playing bench fodder.

Anyone considering an alternative option with higher investment in midfield, achieved through 2 mid-priced forwards:

    Foster Elliot
    Daniels Yoshida Trippier Suttner Hunemeier
    Pogba KDB Alli Coutinho TCarroll
    Lukaku Defoe Chicharito

Obviously goes without Kane and potentially defence is a bit light
The templates I've seen have gone for 2 high priced forwards with Jesus or Kane.

I could put Zaha / Fabregas in the midfield to free up some funds for defence

    Any thoughts?

The main concern with this approach is a lack of captaincy options. I have no qualms about captaining KDB, Alli or Coutinho, but many don't like the idea of captaining a mid.

I like it. Prefer Austin over Chicha to start though.

I quite like it though have a few observations.

Pogba is still a bit of a gamble for gw1 seeing as Matic has had no preseason with the team and may not play gw1. Regardless I have him on my team atm but will monitor the situation.

I don't fancy Zaha apart from his opening fixture. I'm more convinced by a 6+ wing back as I don't see value in midfield atm. I would rather have Kolasinac instead of Suttner and downgrade Zaha to Fraser/JWP.

The united back line has been on my mind a lot as well. I couldn't justify 6.0 on Bailly due to his lack of attacking threat and he doesn't tend to get a lot of bonus points. I do think having United cover at the back is essential.

    My team at present:

    Ddg
    Dawson, Trippier, Kolasinac Yoshida
    KDB Willian pogba
    Kane Lukaku Austin

Main concerns are Alonso and Kol and their price but I think I have a good balance. Danilo interests me if Mendy is confirmed out for the first few. I also want Kane as the logic of an easy DG if he doesn't perform is attractive.

Fabi -> 4.0 surely? Only gw6 is a concern, and seeing as it's Arsenal v Pulis, I'd be nervous about benching Foster.

Like the Milo punt, but like you say, Alonso and Kola force you into it. I'd much rather have Zaha there and lighten the defence. Like the rest.

Jonty, I think one thing to consider currently is the dearth of third strikers without caveats. Of all of them, Benteke and Defoe are the ones I'd be most comfortable with-even Firmino is suspect, as I have no doubts the Pool mids will do better than him this season. Everyone below them has issues - Soton strikers not nailed, Chicharito bad fixtures to start with, etc. I would suggest going for JWP who also gets CS points in a 3-5-2 and the money allows you to upgrade Foster to De Gea...

I may well switch to a 3-5-2 but that relies on there being a 4.5 striker who plays - we could do that last season with Diomande and Anichebe but that player hasn't emerged yet. That would mean benching more than 4.5....and currently Carroll offers better chance of retaining value in mid.

As soon as a 4.5 striker emerges who actually plays I'll consider 3-5-2 definitely.

Fair point, I really like Carroll as a bench player as well

Only posted this as I was waking up. Sorry for the repost!

I like this squads balance, however am starting to go off Sane and Firmino.. I think Lukaku is required but also need some City cover retained. How do you feel about rotating 4.5 mids in order to go with a big front three plus Kolasinac..?

    Foster
    Trippier Baily 4.5
    Sane Pogba Willian Ramsey
    Kane Jesus Firmino

    Myhill Carroll 4.5 4.0

    Firmino>Lukaku
    Sane>RLC
    4.5>Kolasinac

Rotating cheap mids/fwds rarely works. I'm not a fan - takes alot of luck and skill to pull that strategy off.

When I've tried it I've ended up benching lots of points.

Sorry for the late reply. I agree. I may even get a 6.0 mid in for Sane to allow the Firmino>Lukau move and go with a big three up top. (have 0.5m ITB)

feel strong midfield is the best way to go .4 midfields got over 200 points last year and only 2 strikers did.

    foster
    cedric dnaiels tripper
alli zaha couinho william de bruyne
    lukaku benteke

    nordfeldt rangel mcburnie lowton

Only caveat is that your third striker may lose value.

Hi mates, I'm on to this:

    Foster (Elliot)
    Lindelof, Stones, Holding (Trippier, Rosenior)
    KDB, Coutinho, Willian, Loftus-Cheek (Carroll)
    Austin, Kane, Lukaku

0.5 in the bank for flexibility. Any sigguestions ?

Would try and avoid playing RLC as a starter - could upgrade him to Milijovic (5.0 mid for Palace, he's on set pieces)

Austin a rotation risk, monitor to see if hes nailed on over Gabbi before GW1

Would put Trippier in the starting XI rather than on the bench

      Good luck!

Hey folks, put together a 5-3-2 to try and cope with the lack of outstanding 3rd striker options and 4th/5th mids. I'm planning a GW7 WC to adjust to whichever cheaper players emerge in form, would appreciate a RMT!

    Foster

    Valencia / Kompany / Trippier / Bertrand / Daniels

    KDB / Pogba / Willian

    Lukaku / Kane

    (Elliot / Miliojevic / Carroll / Fletcher)

If a Capou -esque budget attacker emerges before my WC, I plan to downgrade Valencia/Kompany to a decent 4.5 to generate 1.5-2m to upgrade to a possible 7m midfielder or 6.5 striker

Looks good...as I say I'm not a fan of a heavy defence but that could be to my cost.

Most of my drafts have been with 3/4 at the back, but I've just been unimpressed at the lack of options for budget players further up the field - for the same price I'd rather have Val/Kompany than Ince/Ritchie/Austin/Gayle etc. No one seems to have really shone in pre season articles for me sadly

    Thoughts?

    DeGea
    Trippier / Daniels / Dawson / Yoshida
    DeBruyne / Coutinho / Willian / Zaha
    Kane / Lukaku

    Elliot / Carroll / Long / Quaner

Anybody else looking at Cresswell for your 5.0 def?

He was out for a lot of last year but the two seasons prior he scored 133 and 129 so pretty consistent and great for that price.

I prefer 2. Drop Rangel entirely. He is the highest owned 4.0 filler and his value will drop a lot faster with no playtime. Pick the least owned uninjured 4.0 def filler.

Both great. I like Ake currently for bonus potential, goal threat plus he's a diffeential. If Daniels doesn't score then I can see his very high ownership ditching him.

firmino isnt great at that price, consider coutinho?
as a gooner ramsey isnt necessary, neiter is any arsenal player. good team otherwise.

Firmino is a great third forward, i think he will score 20+ goals and 10+ assists.Fantastic player and Klopp's favourite.I prefer Ramsey over Willian, the Chelsea is not the same without Hazard, and when he returns Willian will be a sub.

Yoshida to Cedric if Cedric is fit to start GW1.

I like Jonty's team but would personally opt for:

Austin Kane Foster > Defoe Jesus DDG

I think the latter 3 will get more points over the season but it all comes down to that man Kane.

This solves the issue of a cheap (potentially rotated) striker and no United defence
