Fantasy Premier League Rate My Team Surgery

Welcome to the first of this summer’s pre-season Rate My Team Surgeries.

These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1. Each time one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team will put forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start the discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing our squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my balanced 3-4-3 selection.

My Team

Key Concerns

My lack of Manchester United or Chelsea defence is a concern as both sets of players are highly owned. It is the gaping Red Devils shaped hole in my back line that is my biggest issue as Chelsea’s fixtures are not great after their opener at home to Burnley, while Jose Mourinho’s troops early matches look superb. David De Gea or Eric Bailly are targets – although each will need funds to be freed up elsewhere.

De Gea could be a possibility as I’m not wholly convinced by my cheap as chips West Brom goalkeeper double up. Would I be better off going for the Spaniard, or indeed the save points that perhaps West Ham stopper Joe Hart or Watford’s Heurelho Gomes may offer early on?

The third striker spot is a tough one this season. Southampton’s Charlie Austin is there as a place holder currently and I’d be particularly keen to hear arguments for other strikers priced at 6.5 or below or even why I should invest more in this berth.

Nailed On Picks

Flexibility is driving my initial selection – and that for me is why Harry Kane is nailed on. Downgrading an injured or poorly performing Kane is easy, upgrading to the game’s most expensive striker could require surgery or an early wildcard. I’m also not convinced that Dele Alli or Christian Eriksen will match last season’s golden boot winner’s output.

Kevin De Bruyne looks the best attacking Manchester City option for me and is 0.5 cheaper than the only other one I’d consider – Gabriel Jesus. The Belgian looked particularly commanding in City’s 3-0 rout of Spurs in pre-season.

One of Nathan Ake or Charlie Daniels looks essential for me. Bournemouth defenders are among the best FPL resources due to their command of attacking points. Clean sheets are merely a nice extra for them. Both this pair appeal, but currently Ake has the edge as one of the best defenders last season for points per match. He was also 2016/17’s best player in terms of baseline bonus points.

As a Brighton fan I’ve got to have some representation and I believe defence is the main place to find it. With two assists full back Markus Suttner has impressed in pre-season and has even been fielded on the wing at times during matches. Lewis Dunk is another option here  – but his ill discipline concerns me. Also talk of his bonus potential hinges on clean sheets – which I’m not convinced my team will excel at in the top flight. Suttner’s attacking potential gives him the edge for me.

Romelu Lukaku is going nowhere with United’s fixtures and his strong pre-season form. Don’t even attempt to persuade me to ditch him.

The Punt

John Stones is my main punt. I originally had United’s Victor Lindeloff in this place but I’m concerned that he may be eased into Premier League action and miss the odd game at the start. City’s Stones could also be a rotation risk, hence the punt, but with wingbacks set to be deployed I can see him earning starts at first and if pre-season is anything to go by he could also bring me attacking returns. Already he has scored twice and assisted another goal during pre-season. If he can carry on that form his lowly 3.6% ownership and 5.5 price tag could rocket.

Formation

I’ve tried to construct a team around a four at the back formation but it just doesn’t sit right with this dullard. I favour the attacking prospects of midfielders and strikers over the dull ache of disappointment when a defender loses a clean sheet.

I’m currently favouring 3-4-3 but am willing to swap to 3-5-2 should five viable midfielders emerge and the third striker well dries up completely.

    Thoughts on this guys?

    Forster, Elliott

    Trippier, Bertrand, Dawson, Clark, Mee

    KDB, Willian, Zaha, Tadic, Carroll

    Kane, Lukaku, J-Rod

    1.0 ITB for post-GW1 flexibility

...or for an upgrade somewhere (J-Rod to 6.5 or 7.0, or Willian/Zaha to 8.0 like Pogba or Mkhitaryan,...).

I'm not sure about double So'ton defence and I think you should upgrade Forster to DDG. Unsure about Tadic and J.Rod, but you could upgrade one of them to Ramsey/Gayle/Austin with your extra 0.5

How about Dawson to Mee instead? I know WBA have good fixtures and Dawson carries an attacking threat, but not sure I trust their defence enough to want to double up.

Alternatively, Fab or Foster > Elliott would also get you that 0.5.

After some tinkering, now unsure about which option to pick from the following 4 drafts... Any suggestions on which one is better to start the season with?

    OPTION 1: 4-3-3, £0m ITB
    De Gea (Elliot)
    Trippier/Cedric/Alonso/Daniels (Hunemeier)
    Fabregas/De Bruyne/Zaha (RLC/Oriol Romeu)
    Kane/Lukaku/Chicharito

    vs

    OPTION 2: 4-3-3, £1.0m ITB
    De Gea (Elliot)
    Trippier/Cedric/Alonso/Daniels (Hunemeier)
    Fabregas/De Bruyne/Zaha (RLC/Oriol Romeu)
    Kane/Lukaku/JRod

    vs

    OPTION 3: 4-3-3, £0m ITB
    De Gea (Elliot)
    Trippier/Cedric/Alonso/Daniels (Hunemeier)
    Fabregas/De Bruyne/Zaha (JWP/RLC)
    Kane/Lukaku/JRod

    vs

    OPTION 4: 3-4-3, £0m ITB
    De Gea (Elliot)
    Trippier/Cedric/Alonso (Rangel/Hunemeier)
    Fabregas/De Bruyne/Coutinho/ RLC (Oriol Romeu)
    Kane/Lukaku/JRod

Basically need to choose from these 4 combinations:

    1. Zaha + Daniels + Oriol Romeu + Chicharito
    2. Zaha + Daniels + Oriol Romeu + JRod + £1m ITB
    3. Zaha + Daniels + JWP + JRod
    4. Coutinho + Rangel + Oriol Romeu + JRod

How to improve this team with 3,5m in the bank?

    Forster (Elliot)
Trippier - Dawson - Kolasinac - Yoshida (Suttner)
Alli - KdB - Tadic - Zaha (Carroll)
    Lukaku - JRod (Gayle)

First thought is ofcourse upgrading JRod and/or Gayle but to who?
I would like to get some United coverage in defense also..

3.5 is too much to keep by I think. Definitely use it to updrage JRod....to a 10m striker perhaps - or even Benteke/Defoe.

        • 6 Years

Yeah I'm not going to start the season with that much in the bank. The question is how to use that money to improve the team the most..
Thought about Benteke, but doubling with Zaha good idea?
Also had Austin in mind, but unsure if he is nailed on as a starter.
Defoe might be a better option.

Experimenting with a squad without Kane.

    Foster - Myhill
    Alonso - Trippier - Bertrand - Dawson - Hunemiesier
    KDB - Eriksen - Pogba - Willian - Carroll
    Lukaku - Gabbiadini - Chicarito

I know a lot of people suggest Austin, but I prefer Gabbi.

For a squad without Kane I'd expect it to be a bit better up top. It looks light when it should look better than Kane teams.

    Any help please?

    Foster / Elliot
Cedric / Stones/Trippier/ Suttner, Brad Smith
Pogba, Fabregas, De Brune, Carroll, RLC
    Lacazette / Kane / Morata

Do i keep the big guns up top or downgrade 1 to Chicharito / someone else and upgrade the midfield area? Do i need a starting backup GK?

If you are playing one of Carroll or RLC each week you need to improve that defence and consider four at the back.

With three big guns surely Lukaku instead of Kane is better - that frees up vital extra cash.

  16. rizqifadhli

    Thoughts on my squad please..
    Foster, (Elliott)
    Cedric, Trippier, Ake, Lindelof, (Rangel)
Pogba, Cou, De Bruyne, (Carroll, Loftus-Cheek)
    Lukaku, Kane, Austin.

Lindelof is not guaranteed starter and I need to use 5.5m for a defender. Is it worth to use it on Bertrand? (but I will then have 2 Soton defenders). Matic's arrival seems will free up Pogba's role upfront, I predict some assists from him to Lukaku in game opener against West Ham. How bout Austin? Is he guaranteed starter? Gabbia and Long also look shaky tho.

Nice midfield, nice upfront, defence is slightly subject.
Not a big fan of Lindelof & Cedric - they could leave you somewhat disappointed.

I like Austin, I think he's worth the risk at least for the first game. If he fires early, he becomes the go-to man for both Soton and the 3rd striker spot.

Any thoughts on this flexible strategy for the first few weeks of the season?

    Fabianski (4.0)
    Kolasinac, Ake, Yoshida (Suttner, 4.0)
    KDB, Alli, Salah, Puncheon (Carroll)
    Lukaku, Jesus, Ayew

    + 2m ITB.

That way, if Kane looks essential, I can quickly move to him. Alternatively, I could use the cash to upgrade Ayew to whichever 7m or less striker appears to be firing.

Bournemouth are looking to have a great season, excited to see them play.

Been tempted to have a juggle with Foster to try and flirt with DDG but not got much room unfortunately.

Toying with dropping Foster for DDG, but I like the idea of having a pricey back four to start for flexibility and that's probably where the cash would come from.

I missed Lukaku there! Instead I'd keep Jesus but I'd still downgrade Pogba and upgrade Foster to DDG

I've currently got all three, but Zaha is the best pick of the bunch. That HUD (H) fixture is the main factor

Thanks 🙂 only problem is that I hate to do later transfers in keepers 😉

Well rounded, like the defence, and I think Fraser is the best 5.5 pick.

Quite happy with this but no Arsenak or Liverpool ... what do you think of it

    Foster
    Cedric, Trippier, Alonso, Daniels
    DeB, Zaha, Willian
    Kane, Lukaku, Benteke

    Myhill, Carrol, RLC, Rosenior

Benteke likely to be moved on when Austin/Gabbi, Llorente, Chicharito etc settle down, Zaha likely to make way for Pogba, Ramsey etc

Just for that opening game v Huddersfield ... if they get a haul their prices will sky rocket.

    Kaku Laca (Quaner)

      Decent team , 7.5/10
im not sold on Cout , not mad on players with potential Transfers pending and if anything salah looks the option based on pre season.
other than that cant fault much at all , Laca is almost like a differential signing based on other teams and would expect him to hit the ground running , fancy arsenal to score many, still not mad on defence potentially a better premium defence option than Monreal worth considering ?

This is my squad before testing out the heat maps. It is built for GW 1 through 3 with a plan to wild card during the first international break. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Foster
    Bertrand Trippier Koasinac Danilo Valencia
    RLC KDB
    Lukaku Jesus Kane

    Elliot Carroll Oriol Romeu Mesa

interesting 5-3-2 approach particularly as it looks like a season of WBs, I would how ever be slightly concerned with only one household name in midflied, neither carroll, romeu or mesa scream points and RLC is a fantasy punt by most which can go either way

Cheers - 5-2-3 formation at the moment. I figure that one of my 4.5 mids will play each week and get 2 points, which is what you might expect at best in most GWs from a 4.5 defender.

Hey guys, first time I'm playing fantasy, so any suggestions would be great!

    Foster / Heaton
    Daniels / Cedric / Dunk / Mee / McAuley
Sanchez / De Bruyne / Coutino / Alli / Loftus Cheek
    Firmino / Austin / Rondon

I'm worried about Chelsea defenders thinking they won't do as well as last year. Thanks everyone!

I can only see one viable captain option in that team and you don't need Heaton + Foster.

Downgrade Heaton to Myhill for an extra 1m to upgrade Mee to Trippier.

Downgrade Coutinho to Ince, and upgrade Firmino to Lukaku.

Rondon -> Gayle or Austin too

Is there a downside to a strong midfield? It seems as though elite midfielders can score as many points as elite attackers. The other thought was with Sanchez, Coutino, KDB, and Alli was that I wouldn't be sitting any of them unless there was an injury.
