The Numbers Game – Watford

Our series of summer members’ articles continues this afternoon as we assess what’s on offer at the managerial merry-go-round that is Watford.

To begin with, we analyse the Hornets’ performances on a team level, checking out last season’s data in order to spot trends and areas of improvement. Following that, we take a look at the players to pinpoint their key individuals.

For this article, we also focus on new manager Marco Silva’s impact on his former club Hull City after an impressive stint at the KCOM Stadidum during the second half of 2016/17.

Watford parted company with Quique Sanchez Flores at the end of 2015/16, scoring 40 times on their way to finishing in thirteenth spot on 45 points.

Yet the now-departed Walter Mazzarri failed to improve upon those performances in his only season at the helm. The Vicarage Road outfit scored the same number of goals but picked up just 40 points, ending the campaign in seventeenth position.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Have him but I am now SERIOUSLY considering removing him. Reason? De Boer plays him as CB in all of the last friendlies.

He loses his potential that way.

I am already checking for replacement myself. I like the player but FPL wise if he keeps playing as CB he loses all potential as I said

Kolasinac for attacking returns. Bailly doesn't have much of a goal threat. Safest and cheapest way into the united def is DDg at the moment.

Perhaps the solution to the paucity of 3rd striker options has been staring us in the face.

2 big up top in 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 formations.

Just feels scary being so tied historically to 3-4-3.

    1. Meltens

But then it's a bench fodder striker v Alli/Eriksen/Salah. They could potentially outscore this 3rd forward.

Not sure I follow, is it Fraser + King (for instance) vs Alli and bench fodder? T.Carrol a lot better than all 4.5 strikers in my opinion.

I would, for opening fixtures prefer Valencia, but over the whole season don't think he is worth 6.5m. TAA is hard to predict, not sure if he starts or not.

Yes. Kolasinac/Valencia/Walker are decent replacements and you could use that money to upgrade Alexander Arnold. I am in two minds with Alonso as Chelsea fixtures after gameweek 1 are pretty bad.
