Selection

The Watchlist Updated – Zaha Topples Out

Our Watchlist player rankings – listing would-be mid-term targets – were revised earlier this week following Gameweek 1.

These can be found in your sidebar on desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet.

They effectively collate our current thinking on player selection for each position, listing the factors that are contributing to the given rank.

When viewing, it’s important to bear in mind the “rules” at play, particularly when it comes to “coverage”. While Harry Kane sits high in the forward rankings, this can dent the appeal of both Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli as midfield options. Similarly, if a goalkeeper looks to be the go-to method of covering a defence, this will be reflected in the ranking assigned to their defenders.

As a rule, we try to force ourselves to commit to one player per position per club. However, in some circumstances – when we consider it viable, and maybe even advisable, to double up – two players will be listed.

Right now, with just a single Gameweek to consider, form has not played a major role in the rankings. This will kick in once we have three to four Gameweeks to analyse. However, in some cases – should a striker score a hat-trick for example – we will start reflecting this in the factors shown.

In general, there have been few seismic changes following the opening weekend.

In goal, we’ve promoted West Brom’s Ben Foster to the summit in light of Newcastle United’s defensive injuries that limit Rob Elliot’s budget potential.

Huddersfield Town’s Jonas Lossl is the biggest climber on show after his impressive haul in the shut-out of Crystal Palace.

West Ham’s Joe Hart also experiences a slight climb, despite the Hammers’ Old Trafford drubbing. Their fixtures improve radically very soon, with their prospects gradually improving as each of the first three away matches are ticked off. Hart, at just 4.5, is currently the cheapest secure route into Slaven Bilic’s backline.

In defence, we have chosen to topple Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia, with Phil Jones currently offering strong value at just 5.0.

Victor Lindelof is clearly set to be eased into action by Jose Mourinho, so Jones looks destined for a run in the United rearguard – while he remains fit, of course.

He ranks high, though Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand – with his ridiculously favourable early schedule – is elevated to top spot.

Lower down, Arsenal’s Sead Kolasinac is a climber following his impressive Gameweek 1 debut, while John Stones is our current candidate in Man City’s defence – at least while we can assess how Pep Guardiola intends to rotate at wing-back.

In midfield, we’ve elected to keep faith with Kevin De Bruyne for now, although he is under real threat from the buoyant Mo Salah, along with the Spurs pair Eriksen and Alli, who both recorded returns in Gameweek 1.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is a climber and gets the nod over Paul Pogba as our weapon of choice in the Man United midfield. The option to double on Jose Mourinho’s attack looks far more favourable following Sunday’s impressive dismantling of West Ham.

Mkhitaryan’s lot is improved by the injury to Wilfried Zaha, with the Crystal Palace winger reportedly set to be sidelined for up to four weeks. We await confirmation from Palace, although as it stands, Zaha’s transfer traffic is only heading one way.

A dearth of obvious replacements – with Willian likely to come under threat from a fit-again Eden Hazard – also boosts Mkhitaryan’s prospects.

Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey is another 7.0 option who is yet to establish steady stock. Benched against Leicester City, the Welshman is not assured of his start at Stoke City in Gameweek 2.

Gylfi Sigurdsson makes his first appearance in our thinking following confirmation of his move to Everton. He enters low thanks to the Toffees’ abhorrent set of fixtures over the next four Gameweeks. However, clearly, the Icelander is set to rise up our rankings as those next four encounters are ticked off.

In attack, Romelu Lukaku’s explosive Premier League debut for United saw him leapfrog Harry Kane at the top.

The Spurs striker needs to find a response against Chelsea in Gameweek 2 to hold off the claims of Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus; the Brazilian is preferred to the Sergio Aguero option, despite his blank at the Amex Stadium.

Under this, there are climbs for Roberto Firmino, Jamie Vardy and Alexandre Lacazette after impressive Gameweek 1 performances.

However, they seem likely to struggle to break into the top three, unless Kane and Jesus continue to falter.

Huddersfield Town’s Steve Mounie is promoted as our budget option of choice, though Burnley’s Sam Vokes also climbs having matched his opening day brace.

The likes of Javier Hernandez, Jay Rodriguez and Jermain Defoe are yet to fire, but will have their opportunity to climb in our reckoning following Gameweek 2.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Took an uncharacteristic early hit last night and did danilo and zaha to lowe and mhki.

It kinda made sense then...but now not too sure....how should I be feeling?

    Team is

    Foster elliot
    Daniels Stephens lowe (Suttner long)
    Kdb salah mhki Ritchie (carroll)
    Kane lukaku gabbi

He's famously known for being known for being famously poor away from home.

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/01/23/is-lukaku-really-a-fantasy-troll/

Only 54% of goals scored at home by January this year (of the big hitters, only Kane was scoring more away). Not sure about the rest of the year, but would be easy to find out. I don't think he would be famously anything based on just one half of the season, though.

Man U is worth a triple up this season. Get one defender (Jones) or DDG, Mkhi and Kaku. If Kaku blanks away then Mkhi & Martial will shine. Its fool proof

Im sure Man U will win it. I just know Jose will have the last laugh. Man Us problem last season was they couldnt score enough but their defence was pretty good. Well this season they have addressed their attack and have an improved defence now. Defences win titles and I think City will still concede despite their massive investment at the back

Did Zaha for Atsu. Now have 2 Newcastle with Ritchie and £2M for earning interest. Ugly but hope to fix soon, perhaps Newcastle will put another 3 past Huddersfield like last time and West Ham then Swansea follow so both winnable.

Arsu or PVA? Of course PVA highly unlikely to get clean sheet so reliant on some sort of attacking returns from a defender playing as a winger against a disfunctional liverpool defense.

    Forster
    Stephens/Mee/Ake/PVA
    KDB/Willian/Ritchie
    Firminho/Kane/Lukaku

In same fixture last March Newcastle won 1-3
goals from Mooy (pen), Ritchie (pen), Murphy and Gayle.

In reverse fixture, strangely, Huddersfield won away 1-2
      Gayle, Wells and Paye.

I need someone to tell me this isn't a terrible idea. I'm currently ignoring Ramsey and Willian as Zaha replacements and taking a punt on Atsu. Looked sharp against Tottenham and will leave me with 2 mil to upgrade either Gabbiadini to Firmino or Jesus to Kane (if Kane goes mental).

    Advice needed

Need to get rid of Lindelof as he wont be playing anytime soon. Problem is he is now 5.4m and most other decent defenders are 5.5m

I have Bertrand & forster from saints already. so going saints might be too much? Even though they have some decent fixtures

My backline at the moment is:

    Lindelof - Ake - Monreal - Bertrand

Just had a nightmare. Sanchez and Hazard fully fit.

    What does one do then?

Why is everyone mentioning Hazard and Sanchez in the same sentence. You only need Hazard when its guaranteed he is getting points. Sanchez is select and forget although he did troll me bad last season did nothing for like 6 games I sell him and he explodes in dgw

Hazard is far more consistent and far more likely to hit a 200+ season consistently than Sanchez.

Sanchez had a freak season last year. Before that he only managed 13 goals. He won't be scoring that many again.

Besides, with Lacazette in the side, he won't get the ball as much as last season.

This is in no way to say he won't be a 200+ calibre player, but rather that it is unlikely he repeats last season.

Want to put Ramsey in for Zaha but have too much money in Attack/Mid already I think (plus in that price range - Willian & Tadic).

So looking at Ince!? To upgrade a defender next week.

    How does this look?

    Zaha + Dummett ---> Mooy + Jones (-4)

    Leave £1.0 ITB

I've dithered for a couple of nights, but reckon I need to get rid of Zaha... who would be the best replacement? Already have Willian.

    A) Ramsey
    B) Wijnaldum (loves his home fixtures)
    C) Ritchie (good fixtures and hopefully pens)
    D) Someone else?
    E) Risk another night to hear pressers (tomorrow?)

    Rest of squad:
    Foster Elliot
    Bailly Bertrand Dawson Suttner Hunemeier
    KDB Willian Zaha JWP Carroll
    Kane Lukaku Firmino

Ownership Tactic forcing my hand here. I am content with it though, Willian could bag something against Spurs hopefully. Early WC too.

Even with Hazard back training? Could be having to move Willian on soon as well

I know Hazard will not play vs Spurs. Pedro might be out again too, but he should be okay. Think Willian survives until the international break, WC GW4

    Simple question, so please answer

Stones (vs Everton) or Daniels (vs Watford) to start?

      Daniels for attacking threat.

Ok. One more quick question. I've already got Willian. Should I:

        Swap
        1. ZAHA for RAMSEY
        2. ZAHA for RITCHIE
        3. ZAHA for RITCHIE + WILLIAN for POGBA (-4 points)
        4. ZAHA for MOOY + WILLIAN for MKHITARYAN (-4 points)

        Or any other ideas

        Thanks!!

Zaha won't fall in price tonight I'm assuming? He hasn't hit the threshold. When will we hear confirmation from Crystal Palace? If I do have to take him out, it'll be for Ince or Wijnaldum.

Probably worth transferring him out tonight to be on the safe side if your set on it

I'm leaving it to the last minute. I want an extra 24 hours to get official news on Zaha, but if he touches 100% in the next half-hour I'll have to make the decision.

I went zaha to atsu... I considered ramsey but got worried about mins ,
considered -4 to spruce up but wasnt brave enough to take a hit .. I can still put up a decent 11..
