The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 2 – Saturday

So far, it all seems pretty simple.

Manchester United are walking through teams and all we have to do as Fantasy managers is back them and count the points.

Romelu Lukaku – while wholly unconvincing throughout against Swansea City – again managed to earn his 53.5% of FPL managers points, with 67% of those owners backing him with the captaincy.

For all the naysaying that took place during today’s display, the fact remains that the Belgian is now three goals ahead of both Harry Kane and Gabriel Jesus – perhaps his most likely rivals for a spot in our forward lines.

Should they dare to blank in Sunday and Monday’s matches then further sales of both will follow, with Lukaku hoovering up yet more owners.

But the day truly belonged to Paul Pogba.

A 15-point haul in South Wales saw him reach new heights to follow his eight points gained in the opening weekend victory over West Ham.

A lot has been said and written on the presence of Nemanja Matic and how this has unleashed Pogba’s attacking talents. However, when we look closer, there is perhaps another individual key to Pogba’s recent boom.

In truth, Jose Mourinho’s side seemed to huff and puff through most of today’s victory, and Pogba cut a frustrated figure at times – indeed, he walked a disciplinary tightrope in the first half.

But late on, the introduction of both Marouane Fellaini and Anthony Martial seemed to galvanise matters. On their arrival, United simply eased through the gears and tore the Swans asunder, with Pogba the main benefactor.

United have now scored eight goals over two matches, with six of those strikes arriving after the 75-minute mark with Fellaini on the pitch.

When he arrives, Pogba appears unshackled to run at tired legs and spread devastation. Notably, his only points earned without Fellaini on the pitch so far has been his assist for Bailly’s opener today.

So while it’s difficult to question the thousands of FPL managers that are now flocking to Pogba, we still need to consider that, to this point, the influence of Matic has perhaps not been as significant as billed.

It’s only when Mourinho reinforces his midfield further that Pogba has proved unstoppable.

Meanwhile, Mkhitaryan quietly gained another two assists without taking control of the game or matching Pogba’s impact.

He is undoubtedly the creator to Pogba’s destroyer. The question is, are we forced to choose between them and if so, is it as straightforward as opting for the Frenchman?

Having just taken a points hit to acquire Mkhitaryan, he’s going nowhere. And with Phil Jones available for just 5.0 in a defence that’s already kept two shut-outs, this Fantasy manager can’t currently find a place for Pogba.

That’s a worry. Potentially, Pogba is transformed and, match after match, he could prove untameable for opposing defences.

But the Fellaini factor is interesting and we perhaps still need to show some caution. Leicester City in Gameweek 3 will likely provide a sterner test which may yet slow the United and Pogba juggernaut.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Somebody asking me a few pages back about bringing in Mkhi and Eriksen.

Mkhi and Eriksen are feeding the top two (?) strikers in the league in two top teams. Why on earth would we not get them ?

Mkhi has gone from a problem pick to becoming almost integral to United in the position behind Lukaku...Mourinho will be in no hurry to bench him any time soon (who else would he play there?)

In a game that has an element of luck about it picking the two players who provide chances for Lukaku and Kane is a bit of a no brainer imo.

not exactly the same role but change of formation perhaps depending on the situation if he gone cold in the match..3 man midfield or Fellaini ? or retaining Mata at 10 ? well he definitely is a good option but I am undecided yet to sacrifice other players for him..

You've answered the question then. That formation is working for Mourinho and all of Pogba Mkhi and Lukaku look really good in it.

He won't be changing anything anytime soon.

Exactly. I think on average I see him hit a target from a cross once per season and I watch a lot of, if not all, the top 5's matches every season.

He should have been 5-5.5mil max this season.

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

Do you have any idea how rare it is for any team to get 10 penalties in a PL season?

In addition, when Milner is on the pitch there's no guarantee that Firmino would take a penalty if one was awarded.

        1. Postman Ty
          • 9 Years
          6 years, 10 months ago

          Last season penalties awarded:
          BOU: 10
          MCI: 9
          TOT: 9
          LIV: 8
And this season with Salah they will win more. From pre-season it looked like Firmino was primed to be taking them this season. Better to keep him well practiced since Milner is clearly going to be in and out of the team.

          1. Ruth_NZ
            • 9 Years
            6 years, 10 months ago

Yes. So the chance of a team having 10 penalties last season was 5%. The average number per team was just over 5. And that was in a record season for the number of penalties awarded.

That equates to "Firmino is almost guaranteed 10 pens this season", does it? Because it doesn't look that way to me. 😕

            1. Postman Ty
              • 9 Years

It was an exaggeration, so let it go.
But the league average has absolutely no relevance. It's Liverpool; they always have a huge penalty count because that's how they play and the players they use.

It was offside by 2cm, a wild guess by the ref though. A fine line between 2 goals in 2 games and disappointing you to an extent you'd like to sell.

    Foster / Elliott
    Stones / Ake / Bertrand / TAA / Suttner
    KDB / Willian / JWP / Xhaka / Carroll
    Lukaku / Kane / Firmino

Wanna catch the Pogba / Mhiki train I think

So far I'm thinking Pogba/Mkhi, Eriksen/Alli and Mane

They eat up your budget pretty good tho

I'd argue only Sanchez is the only midfielder in the whole game I'd happily captain if circumsatnces were different. Mane at home is a consideration. I think 3 Laplana mentioned are the ones to go

Agreed, and I posted the same pre season. Sanchez is the only mid we can captain en masse...all the others don't feel right so we seldom do it.

The 5 mentioned are more than capable of double figures tho. I'd say the United lads are least captain material. Mane first, Eriken, Alli

Bottomed. What do you think of the transfers below?

    Out: DDG Daniels JRod
    In: Foster Jones JHernandez

Main propose of downgrading DDG is to find the extra 1m to upgrade JRod; then getting Jones in for United cover.

Think both Daniels and JRod will drop in price either later or within the next few days.

Good moves imo, had to work out something like this too .
It's good long term to move to Jones plus Foster as they save you a million to upgrade Jay Rodri .
Worth a -4 by a far shout but certainly too sideways for a -8 .

Call it a knee jerk if you like but im wildcarding this week. Too many question marks in my team.

    TAA-Rotated today.
Daniels-In for good fixtures and absolutely no returns.
Van aanholt-Ok its only 2 games but Palace have been shocking and hes 5.5
    Fraser-As Daniels
Willian-Will probably struggle for game time when pedro and hazard are both back which looks imminent.
Firmino-Clearly Klopp has decided on full blown rotation this season and he could be next especially with Sturridge, Origi and possible coutinho return.

Anyways my question is am I mad to do something I have constantly told myself is a bad idea. Double up on watford midfielders.
Either richarlison and doucoure or richarlison and chalobah?

you can slowly phase out a few later if the replacements you contemplating are not much more promising..even a -12 could still be better than wilcarding early..

      • 9 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

Crazy to wildcard now, nothing a few hits can't solve. The sample size is so small, it's absolutely impossible to make any reasonable calls based on good information and statistic analysis.

Wildcard already active cant take a single game more of no Man U coverage. Its making me dislike watching live football cos theres a lot of money riding on this. The -12 suggestion will probably happen further down the line but im gonna jump on a few bandwagons. If i set up to catch the price risers it actually gives me a pretty damn good side IMO

    5. Veezeeboy
      • 11 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

      Go for a -8 or a -12 as suggested above .
12 points is nothing to make up in 3-4 weeks assuming your wildcard picks are going to be much better than the original ones . But get your hits right .

    De Gea
    Alonso Danilo Stephens TAA
    KDB Pogba Ramsey Tadic

    (Elliot, Carroll, Quaner, Mariappa)

Look good to go for next gameweek?

  27. JackQualt
    • 7 Years
    6 years, 10 months ago

    Foster (Elliot)
    Stephens, Bertie, Dawson, Ake (Hunemeir)
    KDB, Mihki, Ramsey, Atsu (Carrol)
    Firminho, Kane, Lukaku

    A) Ake, Ram -> Pog, non playing 4.0. -4pts
    B) Ake, Ram, KDB -> Pog, Erik, Zanky -8pts
    C) Bertie, Ram -> Pog, Zanky
    D) Firm, Ram -> Pog, Chic

Want to catch pog's rise and gain the value early. Ake's fixtures are bad enough he's bench fodder for the next two game weeks anyway, but The Bertie swap gets me a playing defender?! Firm is my only route into Liverpool. It would help if Pog wasn't forcing my hand tonight tbh

Had that breakaway that he hit at the keeper.

      -8? That's a big hit after 2 gw's.

Let it be a lesson. Don't pick cheap players from top 6 teams as it's a waste of a 3rd spot if it turns out you need it, which in your case, you do.

Can you not just do it for a -4?
