The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 2 – Saturday

So far, it all seems pretty simple.

Manchester United are walking through teams and all we have to do as Fantasy managers is back them and count the points.

Romelu Lukaku – while wholly unconvincing throughout against Swansea City – again managed to earn his 53.5% of FPL managers points, with 67% of those owners backing him with the captaincy.

For all the naysaying that took place during today’s display, the fact remains that the Belgian is now three goals ahead of both Harry Kane and Gabriel Jesus – perhaps his most likely rivals for a spot in our forward lines.

Should they dare to blank in Sunday and Monday’s matches then further sales of both will follow, with Lukaku hoovering up yet more owners.

But the day truly belonged to Paul Pogba.

A 15-point haul in South Wales saw him reach new heights to follow his eight points gained in the opening weekend victory over West Ham.

A lot has been said and written on the presence of Nemanja Matic and how this has unleashed Pogba’s attacking talents. However, when we look closer, there is perhaps another individual key to Pogba’s recent boom.

In truth, Jose Mourinho’s side seemed to huff and puff through most of today’s victory, and Pogba cut a frustrated figure at times – indeed, he walked a disciplinary tightrope in the first half.

But late on, the introduction of both Marouane Fellaini and Anthony Martial seemed to galvanise matters. On their arrival, United simply eased through the gears and tore the Swans asunder, with Pogba the main benefactor.

United have now scored eight goals over two matches, with six of those strikes arriving after the 75-minute mark with Fellaini on the pitch.

When he arrives, Pogba appears unshackled to run at tired legs and spread devastation. Notably, his only points earned without Fellaini on the pitch so far has been his assist for Bailly’s opener today.

So while it’s difficult to question the thousands of FPL managers that are now flocking to Pogba, we still need to consider that, to this point, the influence of Matic has perhaps not been as significant as billed.

It’s only when Mourinho reinforces his midfield further that Pogba has proved unstoppable.

Meanwhile, Mkhitaryan quietly gained another two assists without taking control of the game or matching Pogba’s impact.

He is undoubtedly the creator to Pogba’s destroyer. The question is, are we forced to choose between them and if so, is it as straightforward as opting for the Frenchman?

Having just taken a points hit to acquire Mkhitaryan, he’s going nowhere. And with Phil Jones available for just 5.0 in a defence that’s already kept two shut-outs, this Fantasy manager can’t currently find a place for Pogba.

That’s a worry. Potentially, Pogba is transformed and, match after match, he could prove untameable for opposing defences.

But the Fellaini factor is interesting and we perhaps still need to show some caution. Leicester City in Gameweek 3 will likely provide a sterner test which may yet slow the United and Pogba juggernaut.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Best option is downgrading Danilo or Willian since both are going to get dropped son.
I'd go Willian since Jesé or Richarlison have emerged at 6.0 but not many 4.5 defenders have emerged , should be more Danilo downgrade options next week.

My point below still stands. Nothing to do with Fellaini. Was just the change from being a 2 man midfield to a 3 man midfield. In addition to the other team getting tired and chasing the game

Yeah two weeks in a row it had nothing to do with fellaini but was to do with it going to a 3 man midfield (i.e. could have been any midfielder not specifically fellaini) and the other team got tired and tried to chase the game due to being in a losing position.
Also both weeks martial was bought on who did have a really big impact

        2. DoobNoob
          • 11 Years

Yeah and around the same time Swansea went from 5 at the back to 4. They also got more tired and started to go for the game leaving them more open at the back. I also think it was far less the fact that it was fellaini and more that it was a midfielder, it could have been herrera that came on, and Pogba would have played with the exact same freedom. Nothing to do with fellaini

            Look it's just a theory.

They mentioned it on MOTD as well.

            And Fellaini is physically enormous.

All good points, except that changing to a 3-man midfield reduces Pogba's defensive duties, don't you think? That's the point about Fellaini coming on. Ok it could be Herrera, but he was released by the switch, late on.

Just think he's a useless footballer. All he's got is his height, and he doesn't even use that very well. His technical skills are poor. So often he messes up simple 5-yard passes, or miss traps passes to him.

Is it time to retire the scoutpicks?

"Mark has won this week’s instalment of the Nathan Ake versus Charlie Daniels (5.0) Bournemouth defender debate after spotting a fragility down Watford’s right flank.

The Hornets are set to be without regular right back Daryl Janmaat through injury when they drop by the Vitality Stadium, and they also conceded seven chances on that flank against Liverpool last weekend.

This sets the scene for Daniels, who scored four and assisted a further three last season, to prosper.

So convinced are we by Watford’s weakness on the right that we have also included Cherries’ left sided midfielder Ryan Fraser (5.5) in our 3-4-3 formation. A favourite of Eddie Howe, the Bournemouth boss has started Fraser in 17 of the last 21 Premier League matches. With 1.4% ownership, he could prove to be a lucrative differential for those looking to replace injured Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha."

    Well Salah to Pogba done.

I agree with many who think it is crazy but when I look at the next two fixtures, price changes and possible WC in GW3 it all added up to the right move for me.

Now watch Salah net a brace against Arsenal.

United must be playing Swansea every week are they? People do realise that their fixtures are going to get harder? And they do realise that by transferring the players in you don't receive the points they have already got? All these United points are doing is making idiots knee jerk. That means your one move behind every time. One thing I've learnt is to take everything on here with a pinch of salt because when I do listen it goes wrong. Where are the calculated moves? Being one step behind means you will never be one step in front. Anticipate the next haul, look at the fixtures. Have people forgotten about city? It's just chaos on here. I guess I'll use it to my advantage though. After all, Chaos is a ladder.

Sure but look at their upcoming fixtures.

Not exactly a bleak horizon for a while.

      26 Aug 17:30 3 Leicester (H) 2
      09 Sep 17:30 4 Stoke (A) 2
      17 Sep 16:00 5 Everton (H) 3
      23 Sep 15:00 6 Southampton (A) 3
      30 Sep 15:00 7 Crystal Palace (H) 2
      14 Oct 12:30 8 Liverpool (A) 4
      21 Oct 15:00 9 Huddersfield (A) 2

Then it stiffens up after that, the exception being GW8 away at Anfield.

Swansea are horseshit and they were at 1-0 until 80. United aren't the beast everyone are thinking they are. The won't put 3/4 past any of those teams

Swansea were better than I expected. United's attack seemed much too deliberate until later in the game. It's true, they will see better competition, but I think they could also improve quite a lot as an attacking unit.

I think I will hold off on Pogba. I may want to double up on Spurs KDB to Alli/Eriksen and Firmino to Jesus so need to hold the $$$ to do this

Let's hope it work out Kiwi.
Tomorrow and Monday will tell a lot. If Spurs and City dont kick off we might be in short term financial problems. It I will take that for what will work medium term and hopefully short term too.

Jones or a Cedric / Yosh might be better if you don't have already.

Am i right in thinking that when a player falls bellow there base price for example Trippier that it takes less transfers in to get a price rise until the point of reaching their base price

Think it just depends on transfers in/out if a player has a mass exodus of ownership they drop and if a load of people jump on a bandwagon then they rise. In trippiers case he had a mass exodus of owners once he got injured.

I'm thinking of Salah to pogba after last night's benching and the fact that Liverpool have so many games in a short run, and arsenal and man city next. Good plan. Any reason not too?

I disagree. Fellaini is the type of player that can change a game.

I've seen him give away numerous penalties. 🙂

he got 28 goals for bristol city. Chelsea rate him very highly and wont be making the lukaku mistake. Also when llorente comes back can you imagine a double 6"4 strike force. Will make west brom look like dwarfs.

Loaning him out to other prem teams for years then selling him before trying to buy him back 2 years later. Fully expect he'll be a chelsea squad player in the next year or two.

Nope just find chelseas transfer policy hilarious.

              Lukaku > Everton £28m
Two years later bid £75m to bring him back.

              Nemanja Matic bought for £1.5m
Swapped as part of deal for David Luiz
Bought back for £21m 3 years later.

David Luiz bought for £25m plus nemanja matic
              Sold to psg for £50m
              Bought back for £34m

Makes me wonder whether the agents who get a cut of every deal have a lot more influence at chelsea than they are willing to admit.
