The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 2 – Saturday

So far, it all seems pretty simple.

Manchester United are walking through teams and all we have to do as Fantasy managers is back them and count the points.

Romelu Lukaku – while wholly unconvincing throughout against Swansea City – again managed to earn his 53.5% of FPL managers points, with 67% of those owners backing him with the captaincy.

For all the naysaying that took place during today’s display, the fact remains that the Belgian is now three goals ahead of both Harry Kane and Gabriel Jesus – perhaps his most likely rivals for a spot in our forward lines.

Should they dare to blank in Sunday and Monday’s matches then further sales of both will follow, with Lukaku hoovering up yet more owners.

But the day truly belonged to Paul Pogba.

A 15-point haul in South Wales saw him reach new heights to follow his eight points gained in the opening weekend victory over West Ham.

A lot has been said and written on the presence of Nemanja Matic and how this has unleashed Pogba’s attacking talents. However, when we look closer, there is perhaps another individual key to Pogba’s recent boom.

In truth, Jose Mourinho’s side seemed to huff and puff through most of today’s victory, and Pogba cut a frustrated figure at times – indeed, he walked a disciplinary tightrope in the first half.

But late on, the introduction of both Marouane Fellaini and Anthony Martial seemed to galvanise matters. On their arrival, United simply eased through the gears and tore the Swans asunder, with Pogba the main benefactor.

United have now scored eight goals over two matches, with six of those strikes arriving after the 75-minute mark with Fellaini on the pitch.

When he arrives, Pogba appears unshackled to run at tired legs and spread devastation. Notably, his only points earned without Fellaini on the pitch so far has been his assist for Bailly’s opener today.

So while it’s difficult to question the thousands of FPL managers that are now flocking to Pogba, we still need to consider that, to this point, the influence of Matic has perhaps not been as significant as billed.

It’s only when Mourinho reinforces his midfield further that Pogba has proved unstoppable.

Meanwhile, Mkhitaryan quietly gained another two assists without taking control of the game or matching Pogba’s impact.

He is undoubtedly the creator to Pogba’s destroyer. The question is, are we forced to choose between them and if so, is it as straightforward as opting for the Frenchman?

Having just taken a points hit to acquire Mkhitaryan, he’s going nowhere. And with Phil Jones available for just 5.0 in a defence that’s already kept two shut-outs, this Fantasy manager can’t currently find a place for Pogba.

That’s a worry. Potentially, Pogba is transformed and, match after match, he could prove untameable for opposing defences.

But the Fellaini factor is interesting and we perhaps still need to show some caution. Leicester City in Gameweek 3 will likely provide a sterner test which may yet slow the United and Pogba juggernaut.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Depending on how Spurs look today, I'm thinking Mane ➡ Eriksen could well be my move this week. Just wonder if Salah got his rest yesterday, will Mane next weekend?

Big game player is Mané, particularly at Anfield. He's pretty much fixture proof. I wouldn't be getting rid at all, he's quietly started the season on fire and has almost gone under the radar a little with others initially keen on Salah & Firmino.

Definitely one of those transfers with the potential for arse biting.

Maybe I'll keep a close eye on KDB instead 🙂

Thinking about this too, although may ditch Salah instead. Salah is a bit less integral just yet imo - Mane is getting very involved in build up play, which is seemingly reducing his bps

Players can appear as great options at the start of the season and be worth jumping on. Players may play deeper than expected and become not so great options. But if you have spent weeks if not longer creating a squad based on form, fixtures, potential from last season, among many other factors,. Surely you understand these people do not become bad options just because they have blanked and some lesser player scored. Last season ibra scored first 2 gameweek and Sanchez blanked . This was only one example of early wildcards to completely change teams then all of a sudden Sanchez got like 15 Points and ibra blanked for a few. Kane will come good . So should kdb. People need to stop the whole getting rid of players after one game and getting high rotation risks players who happened to have one or two good weeks.

I think it depends though.if you do Fab to Pogba quickly in week to get price rises I get it.

But constructing your whole team around kane then shipping kane because he didn't score (had a lot of shots) seems crazy to me.

Watching games makes a lot of things clear that points and stats just don't show. Full games mind you, not highlights.

It's tough, but even 2 weeks in, it's usually quite clear to see whether some choices you've made have been mistakes.

Basing choices on pre-season and last season is a worse indicator imo, so acting on what I've seen is usually the way I go.

Agreed on your general point though - point hauls alone shouldn't make a decision

I agree with this. Trying to avoid all the kneejerks this week and save my FT even though I have scored a disappointing 29 so far. I will miss out on price rises though, in case I want them later but I think it's a risk I'll have to take rather than regretting getting a player out who comes good eventually because of kneejerk.

Mahrez smashed it in GW1-2 in 15/16. I refused to buy the hype and talked myself out of getting him for another few weeks.

On the other hand last year, I bought the Everton hype after 2GWs and purchased Kevin Mirallas as part of a WC.

When I looked back at the squad I WCd from, it contained Eriksen, Firmino, Agüero, Heaton, Walker.

      Swings and roundabouts.

Many will call it madness but I'm pretty set on thiese transfers for this gw -

    Lukaku + Fraser ➡ Chicharito + Alli for -4 giving me -

    Foster
    Stephens - Yoshida - Hegazi
    Mane - Alli - Mkhitaryan - Phillips
    Aguero - Kane - Chicharito

    Elliot - Carroll - Long - Rosenior

I like to stay ahead of the curve and a few risks early in the season is what I like when there is no set template yet.

    Thoughts? 🙂

The irony is, if he has quiet games against arsenal, that'll be 3 weeks of consecutive sales by the time GW4 kicks off after the international break.

He could be a nice pickup for around 8.8 or so if it goes that way

What people seem to miss in this Pogba-Mkhitaryan debate is the fact that Pogba is way bigger threat on set pieces than Mkhi.

Due to his height Pogba will always be in the box for corners and indirect free kicks and because he is the best free kick taker in United, those duties lie with him too.

Yeah i was kind of thinking that if Mkhi does well, it's likely to be through assists. And those assists are most likely to be scored by either Lukaku or Pogba (fair enough - Rashford / Martial / Mata etc as well & maybe the CB's from corners)

Whereas Pogba should hopefully score more goals. I'd never be captaining either of them anyways, they're just there to be a productive 2nd/3rd midfielder.

Also Pogba was 0.1 cheaper yesterday which was also a factor 🙂

Only when Pogba was pushed forward and Swansea changed formation. That was very stupid of Clement. Won't happen with other decent teams.

Mkhi on the other hand is due some goals soon and he'll play further forward than Pogba anyways.

Both good picks mind you. But I'll take Mkhi over a 6 gw period than Pogba.
