The Technical Area – Firmino’s Opening Gameweeks

Heading into the 2017/18 season, the Fantasy Premier League reclassification of Roberto Firmino from midfielder to forward was a source of much chatter.

Three Gameweeks in and Firmino has made fools of those of us who shied away.

The Brazilian sits joint-top in the overall standings on 26 points, having notched two goals, a pair assists, and twice taken home a maximum bonus points haul. Indeed, only Manchester United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan (106) leads Firmino (101) in the Bonus Points System (BPS) to date.

Over this international break, interest in the Liverpool man has been understandably high. He has experienced one price hike already (from 8.5 to 8.6), and could possibly rise again between now and the Gameweek 4 deadline.

With Liverpool in rampant form – as evidenced by last week’s 4-0 demolition of Arsenal – Firmino offers managers an opportunity to save valuable funds by downgrading a premium forward option to a lower-priced alternative who has hitherto managed to outperform his more expensive rivals.

Here in the Technical Area, we thought that this week represented a good opportunity to dig into Firmino’s game in greater depth.

Specifically, we will be exploring how his profile compares to that of other FPL forwards and whether that early-season form can continue as the campaign unfolds.

Certainly not an English fan in that I don't have a tattoo but I find it strange people criticising players who are at least trying their best whilst the England manager is handicapped due to an ever decreasing pool of players to choose from.

compared to other major footballing nations England produced less quality players before the prem and this has been maintained. They were not a powerhouse before and blaming the prem is clutching tbh

It's obvious (to me anyway) that limiting players from outside of the home nations in Premiership squads to say, 8 and greater distribution of Sky money to grass roots football would only improve England's chances.
                    Get in Rashford!

don't agree with the limiting of players (my opinion) but the money being put into grass roots i 100% agree would improve things in ten to fifteen years

Look at the Forest/Liverpool/Villa teams who won the EC bud.Ive seen it with my own club. The likes of Lee Clark being replaced by Bassedas and Fraser Forster getting sold while we kept Krul.Im not against players from outside the Uk but I think limiting them to a sensible number increases younger players chances of making it.Not all kids hit the deck running and it also forces managers to play these youngsters rather than loaning them out or releasing them.We just have a different way of thinking I suppose.

1.Limit players from outside of UK to increase selection pool.
2.Increase trickle down of Sky money to grass roots.
3.Reduce fixture congestion. Some suggestions include all cup ties settled on the day or even scrapping League cup altogether.

Is it just me or does Alli look far less hard working this season?

Doesn't press nearly as hard as what I remember

I actually thought the same towards the end of last season. Was happy to drift wide. But he's back scoring goals now, so what do I know.
