Scout Report – Wesley Hoedt

Southampton bolstered their defensive options with the signing of Dutch international Wesley Hoedt from Lazio for an undisclosed fee, reportedly worth £15 million.

The 23-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the Saints, and gave an insight as to what we can expect from him during his time at St Mary’s:

“I’m a strong, physical central defender with qualities on the ball. My main task will be defending, but hopefully, I can add those qualities on the ball to Southampton.”

The History

Hoedt joined hometown club AZ Alkmaar at the age of 11 and progressed through the club’s academy to make his senior debut in a UEFA Europa League match against PAOK in December 2013.

He established himself in the first-team squad the following season and made 24 league appearances, scoring twice.

The defender agreed to join Lazio on a free transfer in the summer of 2015 and featured regularly in Serie A over 24 starts.

The Dutchman found it difficult to break into the XI at the start of last season, but was a regular during the second half of the campaign, scoring two goals in 23 league outings.

Hoedt represented Holland at U20 and U21 levels, making 10 appearances, before making his senior debut against Bulgaria in March this year.

He has started five of Holland’s last six matches and looks to have emerged as a first choice option for his country.

The Prospects

A ball-playing centre-back with an impressive left foot, Hoedt looks to have the credentials to be a huge asset for Southampton.

Indeed, he displays many of the same characteristics as compatriot Virgil van Dijk, who, against the odds, still remains a Southampton player following the passing of last Thursday’s transfer deadline.

Hoedt has the ability to switch play with accurate long diagonal passes and is strong in the tackle.

Still only 23, he has good experience from his time in both Holland and Italy, and should warrant a regular starting berth at St Mary’s.

Saints have started the season strongly at the back, keeping clean sheets in two of their three matches.

Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens have been a solid pairing in central defence, flanked by full-backs Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares.

They have only given up four big chances, although they do rank joint-fourth for the most penalty area attempts conceded with 28.

Mauricio Pellegrino decided to name Hoedt on the bench for last weekend’s goalless draw with Huddersfield Town, but is likely to turn to the Dutch defender sooner rather than later.

Looking at the underlying statistics of the three central defenders last season, Hoedt only averaged a clearance, block or interception every 13.2 minutes.

That was inferior to both Yoshida (10.1) and Stephens (12).

However, standing at 6ft 2 in tall, Hoedt did win an incredible 84% of his aerial duels, which was considerably better than both Yoshida (57%) and Stephens (43%).

That alone could be enough to warrant him coming straight into the starting XI – Saints have conceded more headed chances (14) than any other side so far.

At the other end of the pitch, Hoedt averaged a shot every 94.1 minutes, superior to both Yoshida (138) and Stephens (367.25).

Hoedt has scored six goals in senior football and may well provide more of an atacking threat than Stephens and Yoshida, although the latter has caught the eye so far, registering four shots already.

As the senior centre-back, and having just signed a new contract, Yoshida may be the more likely to retain his start in central defence.

But the Japanese defender has played all three matches this season as the left-sided centre-back – the position which Hoedt should take up, which perhaps offers a little hope to Stephens’ 0.9% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Yoshida and Stephens owners could be best advised to hold for the time being, until we see who Pellegrino chooses for the Gameweek 4 home meeting with Watford.

Matters are complicated further by Van Dijk’s failure to see a deadline day move. Reports today confirmed that he was back training with the full squad having been forced to work alone in solo sessions to this point.

The article speculates that Pellegrino will provide an update on his status prior to the Gameweek 4 meeting with Watford. It also states that Van Dijk will require reserve team action before threatening to be a factor in the starting XI. Even so, with the possibility that he will be an additional option, it is clear that the situation in the centre of the Southampton defence is far from certain.

Their schedule remains very favourable (WAT cpl MUN sto NEW WBA bha BUR) all the way up to Gameweek 11, so owning one of their back four, or even Fraser Forster in goal, looks advisable.

Hoedt has been priced at 5.0 in FPL, in line with Yoshida, Stephens and Cedric, with Ryan Bertrand more expensive at 5.5.

That has us lean towards Cedric at right-back as the best option right now, both in terms of value and as a more assured starter than any of the centre-backs.

The Portuguese international has also offered a strong attacking threat so far, registering four shots (three from inside the penalty area) and producing more crosses (16) than any other Saints player.

In the Sky Sports game, Hoedt is priced at 7.5, cheaper than Bertrand, Cedric and Yoshida but more than Stephens, who has provided excellent value so far at just 6.5.

Given the significant outlay made on the Dutch defender, there appears little doubt he will eventually be considered for starts by Pellegrino.

While the Saints boss is a firm advocate of the 4-2-3-1 formation, he did use a five-man defence on nine occasions while in charge at Alaves last season, so there is a chance he is considering starting with three centre-backs.

Vice-chairman of football Les Reed spoke of Hoedt’s signing adding flexibility to Pellegrino’s centre-back options, so with Cedric and Bertrand appearing well-suited to the wing-back positions, such a change can’t be ruled out.

The next few matches – along with Pellegrino’s comments on Van Dijk – should reveal more on the prospects for Hoedt, Stephens and Yoshida. However, it’s unlikely that any update will prevent us from prioritising the Saints’ full-backs from this point on.

Calling all those playing the sky game...

Still a bit confused with the overhaul. The game says:

“The first Overhaul period will be for the whole of Gameweek 4 and up until the first kick off of Gameweek 5. The second Overhaul period will be for the whole of Gameweek 28 and up until the first kick off of Gameweek 29. You will be able to make unlimited transfers during those periods until the first game day deadline”

So I thought that this meant that the overhaul starts at the GW4 deadline which is Saturday and yet the chip is available now.

    Please help

Not mine after my first year in PL though. Too many lost points and cash on the bench. I want to minimize benching headache so a GK and a defender with 4.0 and a mid with 4.5 are essential. If they are nailed on, even better but i prefer to spend all the cash available for the XI starters.

Alright, but the points not lost on your bench may be offset by the weeks you have 10 starters or first choice players getting 1-point sub cameos. It's not for me.

Ozil to Mikhi for me. Team in form plus player who has found his feet in PL vs team on the ropes and the player with a chip on his shoulder.

With the money saved Cork to Brady and also upgrade one of Holgate/Mbemba. Personally I would go for Bavies over Vert or even a saints defender.

Like the Pickford, Maguire and Mahrez picks.

Any chance of a 4.5 midfielder dropping before saturday?

    Loftus-Cheek perhaps?

Just made 0.1 by switching out Kane and getting him back.

If I could do the same with Loftus-Cheek and get him on saturday morning that would enable me to upgrade the 4th defender.

He won't drop. Check out FPL Statistics, only -33% with 9% ownership. I think he's on the bench for many people so I doubt they'll be concerned. Those transferring him out will only be doing so on wildcards so won't affect the price drop.

    Any thoughts on this?

    Fabianksi (Elliot)
    Alonso Jones Cedric Davies (Naughton)
    Mkhi Pogba Alli Salah Brady
    Firmi Morata (Calvert-Lewin)

Too much of a risk to go without Kane and Kaku even though I've doubled and tripled up on Spurs and United assets?

It's a risk but a good one. Go for it!

Actually it's very similar to my WC draft of 3 days ago. On reflection I thought I liked a captain option and brought back Kaku.

Same thoughts here Andy. Having Kaku gives me that captain option that I won't have with either Mkhi or Pogba.

or Firmino or Morata. It's a bit of a vacuum.

Please help...What should i do with this lot?

    Foster
    KOLA, DANILO, Stephens
    Eriksen, Willian, RAMSEY, JWP
    Kane, Lukaku, Firmino

    Elliot, Carroll, FRASIER, HUNEMIER

    0.5 itb
Players I need to lose in CAPS. Should I:

    A. Wildcard
    B. JWP ➡️ Brady
    C. Danilo ➡️ Naughton
    D. Both the above -4
    E. Kola & William/Ramsey ➡️ Jones & Mikhi -4

    Thanks

      F. JWP ➡️ Chabolah (to save money for some premium mids)

You don't need to lose Kola and Ramsey. However, Danilo, JWP, Stephens, Willian may well lose their places along with non-playing Frser and Hunmeier. That only leaves 9 (inc spare keeper). I think I'd Wildcard on that.

I'm assuming that Willian and Stephens have at least a couple of weeks left. So hoping a -4 could get me out of this mess. Maybe

        JWP, Danilo ➡️ Brady ,Naughton-4

Solid move, but needs a hit and you'll prob WC in a week or two anyway. It's probably a safe, low-risk move for now.

Also isn't Frasier injured? Any news on him?

I believe he still is, hence my reference to him being a non-player.

    Good day,

    Wildcard team

    Foster
    Cedric / jones / alonso
    Salah / eriksen / Ali / Brady
    Firmino / lukaku / mounie

Sub: eliot / atsu / naughton / daniels

    0.2 left in bank
(Naughton sub for jones in case he does not start)

    Thoughts appreciated as always

Kane owners: if he blanks against Everton, do you take another price drop on the chin? Could easily be down to 11.7 then. Maybe just as sensible to go without for now, and get back after he gets back in form - at the cost of missing out on first haul.

I brought eriksen and Ali as coverage in the meantime

IF he doesn't they'll be a stampede of sellers and he'll drop 0.5. THAT will be the time to buy him!

There's a cap of 0.3 per GW, very rarely anyone dropping more than 0.2 over a GW.

Very rare yes, but millions of players have held onto him this long and will panic en mass.

He's my captain against Swansea regardless of his performance against Everton. He's proven and will come good barring injuries.

Could actualyl be tempted to play WC next GW anyway, and bu back cheaper. But then I have a couple of defense issues to deal with as well.

Hey, I've got some questions. If you make a transfer and confirm it. Then use the free hit chip, will the next gameweek team revert back to your original team without the one transfer or will it be with the transfer you made? Also do you get to save your gameweek free transfer if you use free hit chip?

Based on FPL explanation the transfer would become null and void as the team returns to what it was at start of GW and saved transfers are also lost ..

okay, cool. Thanks. I'll be using it because 7/11 of my players have terrible fixtures and/or may not even start. Not a good week to own city and pool defenders and lejune is back so my saviour mbemba probably wont start.

Alexis posted this a few hours ago. Can someone who speaks Spanish correctly translate this, please?
Google translate is rubbish but I get the point. He's disappointed, hurt, slightly depressed and it would be nice if Arsenal & Chile could get get their shit together.

      AND THE TOMORROW IS COMING.
You get tired of being criticized with reason and without reason, you get tired of wanting to be defeated, you get tired of saying to yourself "once more I'll get up" after crying after a defeat, and you get tired of telling the world and people who are with you, that everything is going well. And the worst, that nobody ever realizes how that makes you feel ... I have the number 7 of chile and it is a huge responsibility, that is why I am sorry that journalists and bad people criticize without knowing .

Morning peeps! I can now afford Blind over Jones due to Kane dropping.

Yay or nay? Just wondering if Jones is more nailed than Blind.
