Scout Report – Wesley Hoedt

Southampton bolstered their defensive options with the signing of Dutch international Wesley Hoedt from Lazio for an undisclosed fee, reportedly worth £15 million.

The 23-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the Saints, and gave an insight as to what we can expect from him during his time at St Mary’s:

“I’m a strong, physical central defender with qualities on the ball. My main task will be defending, but hopefully, I can add those qualities on the ball to Southampton.”

The History

Hoedt joined hometown club AZ Alkmaar at the age of 11 and progressed through the club’s academy to make his senior debut in a UEFA Europa League match against PAOK in December 2013.

He established himself in the first-team squad the following season and made 24 league appearances, scoring twice.

The defender agreed to join Lazio on a free transfer in the summer of 2015 and featured regularly in Serie A over 24 starts.

The Dutchman found it difficult to break into the XI at the start of last season, but was a regular during the second half of the campaign, scoring two goals in 23 league outings.

Hoedt represented Holland at U20 and U21 levels, making 10 appearances, before making his senior debut against Bulgaria in March this year.

He has started five of Holland’s last six matches and looks to have emerged as a first choice option for his country.

The Prospects

A ball-playing centre-back with an impressive left foot, Hoedt looks to have the credentials to be a huge asset for Southampton.

Indeed, he displays many of the same characteristics as compatriot Virgil van Dijk, who, against the odds, still remains a Southampton player following the passing of last Thursday’s transfer deadline.

Hoedt has the ability to switch play with accurate long diagonal passes and is strong in the tackle.

Still only 23, he has good experience from his time in both Holland and Italy, and should warrant a regular starting berth at St Mary’s.

Saints have started the season strongly at the back, keeping clean sheets in two of their three matches.

Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens have been a solid pairing in central defence, flanked by full-backs Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares.

They have only given up four big chances, although they do rank joint-fourth for the most penalty area attempts conceded with 28.

Mauricio Pellegrino decided to name Hoedt on the bench for last weekend’s goalless draw with Huddersfield Town, but is likely to turn to the Dutch defender sooner rather than later.

Looking at the underlying statistics of the three central defenders last season, Hoedt only averaged a clearance, block or interception every 13.2 minutes.

That was inferior to both Yoshida (10.1) and Stephens (12).

However, standing at 6ft 2 in tall, Hoedt did win an incredible 84% of his aerial duels, which was considerably better than both Yoshida (57%) and Stephens (43%).

That alone could be enough to warrant him coming straight into the starting XI – Saints have conceded more headed chances (14) than any other side so far.

At the other end of the pitch, Hoedt averaged a shot every 94.1 minutes, superior to both Yoshida (138) and Stephens (367.25).

Hoedt has scored six goals in senior football and may well provide more of an atacking threat than Stephens and Yoshida, although the latter has caught the eye so far, registering four shots already.

As the senior centre-back, and having just signed a new contract, Yoshida may be the more likely to retain his start in central defence.

But the Japanese defender has played all three matches this season as the left-sided centre-back – the position which Hoedt should take up, which perhaps offers a little hope to Stephens’ 0.9% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Yoshida and Stephens owners could be best advised to hold for the time being, until we see who Pellegrino chooses for the Gameweek 4 home meeting with Watford.

Matters are complicated further by Van Dijk’s failure to see a deadline day move. Reports today confirmed that he was back training with the full squad having been forced to work alone in solo sessions to this point.

The article speculates that Pellegrino will provide an update on his status prior to the Gameweek 4 meeting with Watford. It also states that Van Dijk will require reserve team action before threatening to be a factor in the starting XI. Even so, with the possibility that he will be an additional option, it is clear that the situation in the centre of the Southampton defence is far from certain.

Their schedule remains very favourable (WAT cpl MUN sto NEW WBA bha BUR) all the way up to Gameweek 11, so owning one of their back four, or even Fraser Forster in goal, looks advisable.

Hoedt has been priced at 5.0 in FPL, in line with Yoshida, Stephens and Cedric, with Ryan Bertrand more expensive at 5.5.

That has us lean towards Cedric at right-back as the best option right now, both in terms of value and as a more assured starter than any of the centre-backs.

The Portuguese international has also offered a strong attacking threat so far, registering four shots (three from inside the penalty area) and producing more crosses (16) than any other Saints player.

In the Sky Sports game, Hoedt is priced at 7.5, cheaper than Bertrand, Cedric and Yoshida but more than Stephens, who has provided excellent value so far at just 6.5.

Given the significant outlay made on the Dutch defender, there appears little doubt he will eventually be considered for starts by Pellegrino.

While the Saints boss is a firm advocate of the 4-2-3-1 formation, he did use a five-man defence on nine occasions while in charge at Alaves last season, so there is a chance he is considering starting with three centre-backs.

Vice-chairman of football Les Reed spoke of Hoedt’s signing adding flexibility to Pellegrino’s centre-back options, so with Cedric and Bertrand appearing well-suited to the wing-back positions, such a change can’t be ruled out.

The next few matches – along with Pellegrino’s comments on Van Dijk – should reveal more on the prospects for Hoedt, Stephens and Yoshida. However, it’s unlikely that any update will prevent us from prioritising the Saints’ full-backs from this point on.

We've had RLC , JWP and now Brady . RMT'S are hilarious with so many gravless copying and tipping up the bandwagon player who just happens to be most mentioned on here

Brady's underlying stats and upcoming fixtures point to a good budget 5.5m pick. RLC and JWP were never good picks to begin with, especially JWP when he's never got an extender run. If anyone had RLC as anything but fodder they were doing it wrong.

Aye i'm taking Bailly's points and running to Jones and banking 1.0 with my first FT next week then it gets complicated.. i can ditch Lukaku for Kane for another FT or ditch Jesus and Chicharito for Kane and Tammy for a -4..

I know Jones has been a solid pick and I'm glad I own him but at some point I see him coming unstuck but I suppose till then he's great value.

Not sure how keen I'd be on Tammy Abraham taking up one of my striker spots.

I'm mailing them down up top and sorting out the rest.

I'm thinking next week I might get Naughton in for Ben Mee. That's pending anything major.

Jones looks good for another few weeks then i'm looking at big Harold Maguire.. beast of a man.. just with having Alonso Bailly needed a downgrade to balance things up a little..

I like what i see with Tammy i can suss him out further and then see what the story is.. by getting him i'm retaining Lukaku so have to consider that

Naughton looks sound alright but have other stuff to sort first

Lukaku is a must have for me anyway.

And that's big defensive spend so can see why your cashing in there but you know me I wouldn't spend Christmas at the back. 😆

Well this is it in a nutshell i don't think i can lose big Rom so Tammy means i can accommodate Kane Lukaku Mane Alli Mkhi and Alonso on top of that.. i can then add another goal threatening mo fo like Harold Maguire and smash FPL to bits lol

                        I do agree.

I think he's potentially unbelievable value and going without has risks. I get all the 7m defender v midfielder stuff too.

It's just at the minute I don't know where to save the cash and I think Chelsea really good run of games is yet to start. That's when I think I'll get him if I'm not forced to before.

Who knows by that stage maybe we will all have an idea of the obvious value in the game that will make a really big team possible or I gain some TV.

Yeah so many options right now that could hurt us all in some way.. i fear Pogba he is peppering the goal these days but Mkhi could well give Pogba owners food for thought when he finds his scoring boots too.. same sort of thing with Mane and Salah.. Hypothetically if Alonso racks up another double digit score this weekend and is looking at a potential .1 or .2 rise what would you do? Who could possibly make way?

I'll have to look at fixtures and for now anyway I hadn't planned on moving for him for say GW5 I'm thinking ride the wave until GW8 earliest.

There is a big of a fixture shift where United's turn pretty heavy and Chelsea's become the best.

At that point I'll have to consider how often I'd captain Lukaku. If it's a case that I feel not very often maybe I should be growing balls bucking the reactive group thinking and shifting Jones & Lukaku or for say Alonso & Morata.

Both good combinations but with better fixtures your imagine the Chelsea options score better?

Couldn't argue with a move like that.. Alonso for obvious reasons and Morata is going to score a lot of goals in that side no question.. United will be a different side in the big away games Jose will never change that set up the key difference will be how much more effective we will be on the counter and Lukaku will be central to that..

Definitely Lukaku will still return in hard fixtures.

But it'll be key calls like that which will define my season..like a vs pairing like that at which point in the game will which pair do better. Sometimes there can be a big swing or run of good scoring for making a good move.

Too often I've played the safely safely but I want to get back to mixing it up enjoying the game having fun and winning my money. No balls no glory.

        Repost, for the late folk.

I'm back with another article. This time, it's a comprehensive analysis comparing Mkhitaryan and Pogba, followed by a comparison between two budget midfielders in Brady and Mooy. Includes all the important stats, heat maps, average positions and all. Do give it a read.

Can you summarise it here as I can't be arsed to click the link and read the whole article?

Click the link so his efforts do not go to waste, but to summarise, close between Mkhi and Pogba, however, Mkhi is preferred. Brady over Mooy

            TL;DR -
Very close between Mkhitaryan and Pogba. Close to nothing between them. My preference is Mkhi, but only just.
            Brady > Mooy.

Good work! As i am fond of statistics when contemplating on the players to get, it is also a main factor to add those numbers to an extended analyse regarding what we see on the pitch to get a broader picture

I read that Salah/Mane analysis and even though you can´t argue with numbers there are several ways to interpret them. Mané might be more involved, but Salah is the one in the box getting those 100% chances and eventually those will get in (agree that he is´nt the best finisher though). So missed shots will not show where those misses shots came from and that´s the reason i think Salah has a better chance too keep up the numbers, because he has more close range shots inside the box. We also saw when Coutinho plyed deep in pre-season that Salah was the one benefitting, and that should be the case once Coutinho is integrated in the team. The rotation issue could be read in opposite direction, Salah already got rotated which could lead to Mané, Firmino the next time, etc. Plus he is cheaper, which could make one 4.0 defensive benchfodder into someone who plays for example.

          Keep it ut, mate!

So Mbemba scored but get replaced at minute 59 for some injury.

I had a dream a few days ago where I saw Mbemba scored early on GW4 and then being replaced at minute 38. How strange.

I should be able to bench him easy enough vs Spurs so think he's in this week.

Otherwise I'm struggling. Other option is Gabbi to Abraham but think long term Stephens needs to go

            B) Jones
            C) Maguire

Rest of (WC) defence: Alonso, Hegazi, Mbemba
I really like all three as options so can't decide!

            Here's my defence :

            Trippier | Jones | Cédric | Mbemba | Long

I'm planning to hold this week and see what happen with Trippier and Mbemba but I'm a bit concerned.

Was planning to use my 2 FTs to sort this mess next week but if Trippier doesn't start and Mbemba is injured I will be down to 10 men.

I think I'll probably get Naughton this week and the better 4.4 def next week instead of Long. Could be Holgate, could be Wimmer, could be Lejeune if he's back.

I think I've decided to hold Kane even with the risk of his price dropping.

I have looked in depth at downgrading this week for Laca(could drop, Arse out of form, could also drop), Firmino or Morata.

My thinking was I could drop this week to avoid a price drop and get back next week anyway however that's 2 FTs used when I still have Benteke in my team.

Avoiding price drops just looks so important at the moment.

Anyone else in the same boat holding or selling?

I'll still need to take a hit to make that happen next week.

Kompany has to go this week, but would you use other free transfer to upgrade Willan or Tadic or even save and reassess next week?

Made 4 changes earlier in the GW for a -8 and left with this.

Would you WC? Wasn't really my plan but plans are for changing..

            Elliot.
            Kolasinac, Yoshida, Jones.
            Pogba, Eriksen, Willian, Atsu.
            Firmino, Kane (vc), Lukaku (c).

            Begovic, Carroll, Mee, Mbemba.

Nah - I wouldn't. Think we need things to settle down a bit before WC-ing.

I took a -8 last week to end up with this:

              Foster / Elliot
              Alonso / Yoshida / Stephens / Mee / Rosenior
              Eriksen / Salah / Mkhi / Fraser / Carroll
              Kane / Lukaku / Abraham

Note: Stephens / Fraser are issues I'll address with 2FTs ...

Cheers~ Not sure it's normal or people are being more cautious but there seems to be less certainty about which players to jump with this season.

Waiting a few more weeks seems to make more sense.
                Not many price changes too.

Yeah - I just think there's a bit of uncertainty still floating around. It'll be nice to see how teams line-up/play post closing of the transfer window, too.

Always the opportunity for new players to surprise & to better check form.

I think I would. You've taken a -8 and even if none of them gets injured I can see transfers waiting to happen in there (Yoshida, Willian) and others you'd probably want to make if you were to wildcard.

Best moves in order to get Kane?

            a) Alonso to a 5.0 mil def
            b) Davies to a 4.0 mil def
            c) Hegazi to a 4.0 mil def and Davies to 5.0 mil def.

            Rest of def is Jones-Zanka.
            Thanks all.

Davies is miles clear on fpl def creativity (assist threat) so a) although why you're so keen on Kane @eve is a bit of a mystery

Planning to get Hazard in later, but need to get 1.4 more for that. What would be the best option?

            a) Kolasinac->Mee
            b) Ritchie->Cork/Chalobah (already have T.Carroll...)
            c) Mounie->Quaner
            d) Ritchie->Atsu & Mounie->Abraham
