The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 4

Are Harry Kane and Romelu Lukau about to make this season very dull?

Many of us marvelled at the array of attacking options we faced prior to Gameweek 1 and, even today, the choices showed up; goals for Alexandre Lacazette, Gabriel Jesus and Alvaro Morata demonstrated that.

But there is already a feeling of inevitability about the fact that Lukaku and Kane have dominated as the top two captain picks for four successive Gameweeks.

The Spurs’ striker’s “mini drought” ended today at Goodison Park – perhaps the least likely venue for a haul when we studied his opening four Gameweeks. But the Toffees were poor and simply folded to an impressive Spurs display.

Now, with the next four fixtures looking so favourable Mauricio Pochettino’s side, Kane’s bandwagon will surely gather pace, stalled only by the fact that 30% of Fantasy Premier League managers may be otherwise distracted by replacing the suspended Sadio Mane in midfield.

It now seems only a matter of time before Kane’s 26% ownership rises and starts to reach levels similar to that of Lukaku.

The Manchester United striker was hardly spectacular at Stoke but, again, he found the net and could have scored more. Owned by 58%, if he remains free of injury, it’s feasible that he could even span the entire season as the go-to captain option for the majority of managers; 37% backed him today, with Kane back on 11%.

With the Wildcard active, I pondered losing one of this pair – temporarily gambling on Lacazette outscoring Kane today and paying the price.

I’m not sure I want to taste that medicine again. Fortunately, the funds have been reserved to bring in the Spurs man ahead of Gameweek five, and he’ll be locked in from now on.

Indeed, I’m now wondering if that means that the scope of my attacking changes this season will be limited to my third striker and an occasional shuffle of three big-hitters in midfield.

My faith in Kane is pretty much unshakable once the goals start rolling. Meanwhile, Lukaku looks likely to keep scoring merely by turning up to lead a United attack powered by Paul Pogba’s physicality and fed by Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s guile.

We can flirt with alternative options, even experiment with the captaincy from time to time, but giving up on the security on offer from Lukaku and Kane won’t be easy.

The aforementioned Jesus, Lacazette and Morata all have their merits. The latter is now the top scoring striker but, presumably surrendering spot-kick duties to Eden Hazard, I’m not convinced he or even Jesus can live with the “big two”.

I’m preparing to watch Kane and Lukaku dominate, push 30 goals and battle for the Golden Boot. That would tie up 24 million of my budget over the season and restrict my ability to react to the big-hitter bandwagons in midfield.

My season might be limited to switching Spurs, Liverpool and United midfielders to form, and shuffling some defenders according to fixtures.

That doesn’t sound all that appealing, but I’m not sure when I’ll next have the balls to change it.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Salah's first four hauls: 11, 1, 11, 1

    Firmino's first four hauls: 12, 2, 12, 2

Happy days for owners next week!

Something I remember the winner of FPL saying in his interview last year - captain the big scorers in away fixtures against weaker opposition.

May seem obvious, but if for example, the choice is Lukaku at home to Burnley or Kane away to West Ham you can guarantee Burnley would just sit back and defend, whilst the home team rarely sits back - they are always more open.

Even the top teams score more at home and concede more away. I don't really buy into the logic of that strategy.

Sanchez was a prime example of this last year - he was lethal away from home, and by far the best captain option in those games.

Wouldn't this make more sense when playing away against midtable teams? Weaker teams will park the bus regardless; ie. Sunderland at home against Spurs last season

The guy who came second said that. It was for teams who play on the break. Also don't always assume the home matches will give the most points. Players like Sanchez last season it worked for.

sometimes sitting back and inviting pressure is disastrous, and most teams still concede less at home on average.

It was his instagram page with the "focus" post, I suddenly felt he was back in the grove and couldn't wait to get on the pitch. I didn't think Kane or Lukaku would do so well. Turns out they did and Sanchez could wait until the 80th minute... I'm currently 18 points down including captain decision and 4 point hit. Stupid. I'm glad you think I have profile though, that makes me feel better 🙂

It was the "masterstroke" comment in the captain sensible article last night that convinced me.

I'm really quite happy to have him in my team though. Looked lively today, good fixtures after Chelsea and 2% ownership is crazy!

That's what I'm telling myself too, in reality I could/should have wait until GW6. I also worry he looked a little more solid than usual... I hope it won't take him long to get up to full fitness. He's certainly got the potential to be an explosive differential.

That was for the OP but yes same sentiment to you too. Still, that's a HUGE pick having him in your team, and just the type that would suit my formation ideally but for me the price is WAY above what I can carry and not prepared to butcher what I've got to get him in so my hat goes off to you.
Once fit and playing the full 90 he's going to be immense, had him for a while last year and was very happy with the results 🙂

Now that it's quietened down a bit, what did you make of Choupo-Moting and Gross? Are they viable enablers?

Gross seems involved in everything Brighton did, but then again it would take a lot of faith in Brighton's attack. Choupo-Moting would be great as a 5.5 OOP mid, but his touch map was mostly that of a left winger today. Anyone watched the games in their entirety?

Sure, but I would never have considered Xhaka - he's a defensive midfielder. Gross and Choupo-Moting are not.

      Didn't see Grossb at all.

But watched the Stoke / Utd game on TV and Moting looked great. Maybe a bit of a "confidence player" as he came to life after scoring, so would question his effectiveness when the chips are down. Was best player on pitch for quite a period though. Not only 2 goals but was involved constantly influencing the game.

      Got the MOM, deservedly imo.

So, how do I get Kane in?

    Elliot / Krul
    Cedric / Mee / Jones / Naughton / Holgate
    Eriksen / Mkhi / Salah / Brady / Carroll
    Lukaku / Lacazette / Firmino

You're very close to being able to afford Lukaku, Kane and Firmino so I suggest you pursue that.

No. Naughton has good fixtures after the Spurs game and you would need a Spurs clean sheet at the very least to make up for the hit.

Will hold the transfer... 2 free transfers next week to then maybe go Eriksen > Alli, Naughton > Holgate and Bertrand > Davies (probably 5.7) for a -4.

No bonus but Eriksen remaining a joy and a breath of fresh air to own as he has since BUR last season.

Alli still getting into cracking positions. Owners should keep faith and even consider bypassing Kane in favour of the value both offer along with Bavies.

I've been an Alli owner from the off but eventually looking to own Kane AND Eriksen instead.

Iv made 4 transfers this season.

2nd week milner out (clean sheet) to bavies (no clean sheet)

3rd week alonso (clean sheet) and willian (blank) out for a -4 hit to trippier (no clean sheet) and eriksen (blank)

4th week danillo (clean sheet) out to cedric (blank)

How on earth im sitting 1900 overall currently when all transfers iv made so far have worked out so badly is beyond me. Has anyone else made all bad transfer decisions like me so far but still getting on ok overall?

Thanks buddy you too, i see we both went for similar captain and vice captain picks this week, your risky selection payed off for you in spades, great shout with Kola. We also both activated our wildcards too, you had the same thoughts on wing backs all pre season also then?

Uncanny captaining for us both, just figured if I can't captain him in that fixture when can I. No real stand out option so thought I'd risk it, so happy it payed off (unlike in GW1 with Alonso lol)
Yes, started the season with the wing back malarkey but just wasn't happy with KDB and Redmond (to Mkhitaryan and Salah) as the mids, just not enough return for the money and that position is key in that formation.
Wasn't happy with the Defenders either, Danilo and TAA had to go too. I know some have played their WC and it hasn't worked out immediately maybe their returns will come further down the line, but I was happy to get some immediate returns tbh. Kept Kola, Alonso and Hegazi (who I'll cash in on after Monday's game) and brought in Davies and Cedric.
Jonty was kind enough to give me some advice the other day, he makes some valid points regarding Kolasinac and the midfield.

Iv had the same thoughts as you im moving towards your strikeforce also that appears good to go for a long while yet as a template. Getting alonso back in for my wildcard too. Trippier and jesus are too rotation risky for me and was considering Salah even tho he played great today, alli just appears far more nailed on after salah was removed at half time after havin otamendi on toast for most of first half. If zapacosta can usurp moses too, when stoke and evertons fixtures turn kinder there is also bellerin pieters and baines id happily take a poke at if it felt right. It might seem potentially dull season for mark but im looking forward to seeing how these different defender/midfielder strategies compare over the course of a season. This week certainly felt like we were vindicated regarding the extra premium defenders, but im sure it will swing in roundabouts. The only concrete argument im convinced by ditching premium defenders is the lack of flexibility if it goes awry.

Wanna go to bed can't be priced out on Davies. Which move more sense.

    A) Hegazi》Davies Free
    B) Lukaku》Kane Free
    C) Morata Alonso》Davies Kane-4

Midfield: Alli Salah Atsu Mhkit Loft
    Forwards: Lukaku Morata Firmino

    Thanks

And if his teams scores heavily next few weeks he'll be a genius 🙂

It's mainly a game of luck in the short term; logic, stats & watching players play only pays off longer term.

Wildcards are over rated anyway, im sure their influence is over rated as people draft in fashionable players that go out of fashion a week or 3 later.
