The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 4

Are Harry Kane and Romelu Lukau about to make this season very dull?

Many of us marvelled at the array of attacking options we faced prior to Gameweek 1 and, even today, the choices showed up; goals for Alexandre Lacazette, Gabriel Jesus and Alvaro Morata demonstrated that.

But there is already a feeling of inevitability about the fact that Lukaku and Kane have dominated as the top two captain picks for four successive Gameweeks.

The Spurs’ striker’s “mini drought” ended today at Goodison Park – perhaps the least likely venue for a haul when we studied his opening four Gameweeks. But the Toffees were poor and simply folded to an impressive Spurs display.

Now, with the next four fixtures looking so favourable Mauricio Pochettino’s side, Kane’s bandwagon will surely gather pace, stalled only by the fact that 30% of Fantasy Premier League managers may be otherwise distracted by replacing the suspended Sadio Mane in midfield.

It now seems only a matter of time before Kane’s 26% ownership rises and starts to reach levels similar to that of Lukaku.

The Manchester United striker was hardly spectacular at Stoke but, again, he found the net and could have scored more. Owned by 58%, if he remains free of injury, it’s feasible that he could even span the entire season as the go-to captain option for the majority of managers; 37% backed him today, with Kane back on 11%.

With the Wildcard active, I pondered losing one of this pair – temporarily gambling on Lacazette outscoring Kane today and paying the price.

I’m not sure I want to taste that medicine again. Fortunately, the funds have been reserved to bring in the Spurs man ahead of Gameweek five, and he’ll be locked in from now on.

Indeed, I’m now wondering if that means that the scope of my attacking changes this season will be limited to my third striker and an occasional shuffle of three big-hitters in midfield.

My faith in Kane is pretty much unshakable once the goals start rolling. Meanwhile, Lukaku looks likely to keep scoring merely by turning up to lead a United attack powered by Paul Pogba’s physicality and fed by Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s guile.

We can flirt with alternative options, even experiment with the captaincy from time to time, but giving up on the security on offer from Lukaku and Kane won’t be easy.

The aforementioned Jesus, Lacazette and Morata all have their merits. The latter is now the top scoring striker but, presumably surrendering spot-kick duties to Eden Hazard, I’m not convinced he or even Jesus can live with the “big two”.

I’m preparing to watch Kane and Lukaku dominate, push 30 goals and battle for the Golden Boot. That would tie up 24 million of my budget over the season and restrict my ability to react to the big-hitter bandwagons in midfield.

My season might be limited to switching Spurs, Liverpool and United midfielders to form, and shuffling some defenders according to fixtures.

That doesn’t sound all that appealing, but I’m not sure when I’ll next have the balls to change it.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

You have to keep him for long term(6-8 weeks) for good returns. So decide if you have that much patience or not...

His goal threat is meh, so paying 10m for him doesnt feel right

I do, I do... Atleast at this stage when you have only 100m to play with

Paying 10m for occasional hauls and not being a captaincy contender isnt my cup of tea.

I kept kdb through and i m thinking of selling.

He was fantastic ytd. His 1st touch is fantastic, on corners and freekicks, and attempted alot of through pass which 1 of them was scored by aguero. Heart of the attack as most of the balls seem to pass to him and silva.

However, he only had 1 long shot attempt saved and another off target. Hardly seen inside the box.

      10m is debatable

Theory behind it is if you're captaining Kane every week (or 90%) there's no point getting any other 10m+ players. Also, it's looking the best value could be in the wing backs in defence and mid-high price in midfield this season

Very nice team. Almost identical to mine. I would prefer lukaku in place of chich. That means downgrading eriksen and mkhi as you would then have better capt choices from the same teams as theirs. There is great value in small team playmaker/set-piece taker MFs. Eg: mooy, ritchie, shaqiri, gross, etc. they would enable this move. Further more i belive firmino to be better kop cover to salah purely due to price and pens. Perhaps u could also look at ditching Jones and raising funds for kolasinac as some sort of access to arsenal pts

Stay clear, team has a heavy schedule and both are young, will probably share mins.

Not only him but Salah may be an issue soon if Klopp gets silly with rotation, in 4 games he's been tested once and taken off at HT.

Are people not gettng Haz in? Seemed like he was on form yesterday right. Thinking of swapping Yoshida and Mane. Options are Alonso and Gross/Jese/Chopo, which leaves 2.5 ITB for Kaku-> Kane and Alli/Eriksen -> Hazard down the line. Otherwise Hazard and a 4.5 defender? Both would be for a -4 hit which seems inevitable.

What are your thoughts, would you get Haz in for next week or hold out a while longer.

U need decent enough budget midfielders n defenders to fund that

11% who captained Kane stole a mach on the others this week.
The game is condensing now having seen the top 1k averaging 29 points.
Really still none the wiser with Jesus, laca, Kaku, Kun, Morata, Firmino and Kane all possible scorers next week.
3 4 3 seems the old story once again.

Depends on how well you can manage overall team with them

Having 3 premium forwards will surely have impact on other positions

I recognise there are different ways to play the game, but I'm really surprised any Kane owner would ever consider not captaining him. If you own him, you captain him. To me that's the whole point - he's fixture proof and will earn you around 460-500 points as captain by the end of the season as long as you stay patient. Trying to second guess when he will blank and who you should captain instead seems like a nightmare. I brought him in this week for the first time after his price dropped and I never considered captaining anyone else, even though lots of managers were talking about alternatives or even keeping money in the bank to buy him next week instead. Seems like madness imo. It's Everton, not Barcelona. I imagine he will now be my captain until he's injured/suspended.

What about Hazard? Or Jesus? Or Sanchez? He isn't the only player that has infinite quality.

No but he's the most reliable over the course of a season. To me it comes down to one question: Do I think that Kane (C) for 38 weeks will outscore a combination of me trying to second guess who will haul when? I think it will. If you keep swapping your captain you might go on an amazing hot streak if you keep getting it just right, but you might go on a shocking cold streak too where you keep just missing the hauls because you're constantly swapping captains. I guess it makes things more exciting, but I doubt it works out more often than accepting the highs and lows of your best player over a whole season and being 100% certain of doubling ALL their season points.

Understand what you are saying, but in game week 10 when Kane is away to Man United, Lacazette is at home to Swansea and Morata is at Bournemouth. If I had one of those two, I would captain them over Kane that week.

Very less chance to win I guess?

    Opponent: 18+ Van Aan, Lowe

    Me: Fabianski, Fernandez, Brady, Mouniex2

Mane, Yoshida and Hegazi to Sigurdsson, Davies and Alonso for -4pts?

Mark would currently have 48 points if he kept the same team as of last gw. Instead he used WC and is on 29 points

Guys, any ideas what to do here:

    Foster
    Bertrand Yoshida Trippier
    Salah Mikhi Willian Brady
    Firmino Kane Lukaku

    Elliot Carroll Suttner Gamez

    1 FT, 0.4 ITB

Any advice please? I'm thinking Yoshida is the likely one to go but who for?

    Thanks

Despite the assist Trip is fighting to keep Aurier out, sideways maybe but Trip>Davies maybe the move as it's not entirely clear if Yoshi has been dropped or rested

Yoshida does have to go...hoesdt and vvd rot risk. Try getting alonso or kolasinac in his place by shifting funds from your midfield. Ur team looks really good but you are totally exposed to chelsea/city/arsenal scoring big.
