Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope Returns

Five Gameweeks into the season, we felt it was time to add our regular Suspension Tightrope widget.

This is now available under the Watchlist rankings in your right sidebars or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet.

For those unfamiliar, the Tightrope keeps a tally of cards accrued from all domestic matches across the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Premier League fixtures.

The table is updated after each Gameweek, and we aim to share the Fantasy implications of the latest yellows and reds collected in articles like the one you are reading now.

We’ll bring you news of all the latest suspensions, along with updates of the yellow card totals of the most regular perpetrators as they edge towards a domestic ban and clamber onto the ‘Suspension Tightrope’.

Crucially this season, it appears that the FA have changed the curfew rules for accumulating five and ten yellow cards.

Previously, players had to avoid collecting five domestic bookings before New Year’s Day, when the “tightrope” was extended to 10 cautions. They then had to get to the second Sunday of April and avoid receiving a two-match ban for 10 cards.

However, presumably to make this fairer for teams who played more matches before those curfew dates, the FA now specify the following in this season’s handbook.

A Player accumulating five cautions will be automatically suspended for one first-team competitive match if he has accumulated those five cautions in (up to and including) the number of matches in the relevant League as set out in the table below:

LeagueLeague Matches
Premier League19
EFL19
National League23

A Player accumulating ten cautions will be automatically suspended for two FTCM if he has accumulated those ten cautions in (up to and including) the number of matches in the relevant League as set out in the table below:

LeagueLeague Matches
Premier League32
EFL37
National League37

This effectively means that, regardless of when their fixtures fall, players have to avoid five bookings over their team’s first 19 Premier League matches and ten bookings over the first 32 matches.

In Fantasy terms, this means that Gameweek 19 – on December 23 – is currently the curfew for five yellow cards. Gameweek 32 on March 31 would be the second curfew, although, for some teams, that will be disrupted by postponements around that period.

The FA Cup Quarter Finals fall in Gameweek 31 currently, while the final of the Carabao Cup will take place in Gameweek 28. Those teams involved in either of those will face a postponed fixture and, therefore, their players will have a curfew for 10 cards extended.

I have contacted the FA for clarification of this.

As it stands, already two players are just one yellow away from a single-match suspension and look destined to serve a ban unless they can somehow navigate another 13 Gameweeks without a caution.

Crystal Palace’s Jason Puncheon and West Ham United’s Pablo Zabaleta are those two players. Both have received four Premier League bookings and were understandably omitted from last night’s Carabao Cup ties with that in mind.

That pair walk the tightrope against Manchester City and Spurs in Gameweek 6.

Below them we have eight players on three bookings and these include another Palace player – Christian Benteke. A suspension for him would be a major blow given their lack of options up front.

Newcastle United’s Matt Ritchie is perhaps the key asset in that list. He’s produced four assists so far this season and has earned over 93,000 new owners ahead of Gameweek 6. Pick up a yellow card at Brighton on Sunday and he will be just a single caution from an untimely one-match ban.

Of course, throughout this article we will also update you on existing bans and their progress.

Chelsea’s David Luiz is our article’s poster boy, having been the latest to be served with a suspension. A three-match ban has him sit out tonight’s Carabao Cup clash with Nottingham Forest along with Gameweek 6-7 encounters with Stoke City and Manchester City.

Elsewhere, Liverpool’s Sadio Mane, along with Newcastle’s Aleksandar Mitrovic and Miguel Britos of Watford can all make returns after Gameweek 6, having served out their own three-match suspensions.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I am already 75 points off the current leader who has been unbelievably lucky so far. I have no choice but to WC.
    How does this look?

    Fabianksi - Elliot
Dawson - Yoshida -Jones - Naughton - Lascelles
    Caroll - Alli - Silva - Gross - Atsu
    Morata - Kane - Lukaku

    0.2m ITB

I am trying to get Ben Davies in but am lacking funds...need at least another 0.5m from somewhere. Any idea who could be sacrificed for him, if he is worth it?

    Thanks for your help people.

Yoshida -> another 4.5. Very easy. If you've gone for that top heavy set up you might as well do that, plus Yoshi is in trouble with VVD and Hoedt threatening to be the first choice CB pairing

True, but many of the usually high scoring mids are not delivering except for a few exceptions!

Mane Coutinho Salah Mkhi Silva Eriksen nall great options in the midfield tbh. Don't see why people are overlooking them so easily

Even with a big front 3 most will have 2-ish of them and even though you're right that all those players are good options they only represents 3 teams - my point being that most will have Kaku Kun Kane and would 'only need' pool coverage so one of Salah, Cout, Mane is probably sufficient.

But wouldn't you also need Pogba/Mikhi and Alli/Eriksen as well as a Liverpool Mid? Can't be done with the 3 K's.

Is there also a "Mini-League" factor where most of your rivals have 2 of the 3 and by having all 3 you can mitigate any damage?

      1. Pumpkinhead
        • 9 Years
        6 years, 7 months ago

Kaku is the big one - owned by 60% of the league. I transferred him out last week. Every time he gets points I'm sure to have a tightrope of a game week. Kane at 28% and Kun at 20% is manageable.

    9. raihak
      • 7 Years

Spurs mids are hit or miss. Alli and Eriksen are both 9.5+ and not delivering consistently. Chances are, if one of them delivers Kane will be involved (as the spearhead) for an assist or a goal. Id rather take a chance of Kane (also penalties) than flip a coin between Alli or Eriksen.

Mane and Salah are exactly the same, only Firminho is not Kane and can go missing altogether. Also there's Sturridge in the mix. I prefer Salah to Mane.

Mikhi has been playing rather poorly, never completes a game and was fortunate with his returns last week. Pogba's been playing deep and only comes to the party after Fellaini gets subbed in.

David Silva is a bit of a rotation risk.

Given the above most popular mids and their predicament, how is the following team decimated?

      Elliot (Krul)
      Davies, Kolasinic, Jones, Naughton/Mee/Lascelles, (Mbemba)
Atsu, Silva, Salah (Loftus cheek, Carrol)
      Lukaku, Kun, Kane

I know that some of these mids will come to the party sooner or later, it's very easy to downgrade an expensive player than the other way around.

Yeah completely changed my mind when seeing how it would decimate my team - don't want to lose Alonso or any of my 3 premium Mids, will likely keep Kane as he's playing away from Wembley this week. Will look at Silva and/or Mendy as my city coverage instead I think, I have 2 FT's and need to use at least 1 this week, what would you suggest?

It's a strong team on paper. I personally think that such a strong forward line presents too many weak links in the team as a whole, yet a 4.5 forward will not give you anything....

You've done well with strong options in defense and I assume you will be running a 4-3-3?

I don't quite understand the Tim Krul deal, but given the timing it must mean that he's starting on Sunday vs Newcastle. By all accounts played very well in the Cup last night at Bounemouth.

    0.5 ITB.

planning to go 5-2-3, or 4-3-3 as the wing back system big teams are implementing makes defenders far better value than expensive fpl midfielders.

    Suggestions would be appreciated, cheers.

I'd think about upgrading Gross to Ritchie.

That is if no issues after break and enough ITB. Also keep an eye on rotation for Kun and get Kaku back later

People are acting like it's guaranteed that City are going to destroy Palace and Agüero'll get a couple.

It doesn't always work like that. Agüero scored more away last year iirc, and City didn't always destroy smaller teams i.e. Boro.

Woy will have them playing two banks of 5, there's always the possibility of it turning into "one of those" afternoons.

Nothing's guaranteed - it's called playing the percentages. Otherwise, we'd just all click auto-complete and see what happens.

could be said when most of the big teams play the smaller ones at home. Just I think City have the ability to dismantle the park the bus teams, they move the ball too quickly for defensive teams to keep their shape

Aguero will get 1 or 2 probably. But so may Lukaku/Kane. Its important not to be biased in these sort of things. I don't have Jesus/Aguero but they will most likely get a goal or two each at the weekend.

Follow that logic through to the Utd & Chelsea games also and I doubt Woy would want to be in charge of a team with a big fat zero in the goals scored column after 8 games.

      Abraham, Carroll or Vokes.

Carroll is always a fun punt as long as you know you can pull out a WC if needed.

      Abraham
      Calvert-Lewin

It's between Abraham and Carroll for me. Think I might have a bit of fun and go with Carroll: Two home fixtures and on his day he can be unplayable in his own awkward way.
