Dugout Discussion – Saturday

Kane delivers 13 points for a third successive away match to reward the 17.4% of managers who gave him the armband. Now it’s over to Romelu Lukaku to step up.

It was reported this morning that the Belgian was a doubt heading into today’s clash with Crystal Palace but, presumably, he has shaken off a knock sustained in training to start.

Expectations will be high and he is backed by over two million managers with the armband – his biggest total of the season so far.

Lukaku has scored in each one of his outings for Man United, aside from the Gameweek 3 win over Leicester City, though he missed a spot-kick in that outing. He collides with a Palace defence that have conceded more goals (13) and more shots on target (37) than any other team.

Phil Jones and Antonio Valencia also start, despite concerns on their fitness heading into today’s contest. They will go in search of a sixth clean sheet of the season, though Eric Bailly is benched and looks set to miss out on that possibility.

Old Trafford is undoubtedly the main focus this afternoon, with little Fantasy interest elsewhere.

Jamie Vardy is the top owned attacker on show in the other four matches; he’s backed by 11.6% of managers ahead of his trip to Bournemouth.

Meanwhile, Ahmed Hegazi’s 27.4% owners will be relieved to see the Egyptian retain his start in a West Brom back four at home to Watford.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Alli and Eriksen blanking could've been the best thing possible this week even though I have Eriksen in my team.A lot people in my ML doubled up.

Even better I own Davies and Kane.

xG is an 'objective' measure that compares against the finishing abilities of the average player. The top strikers tend to do better than their xG because they're better finishers than the average player.

Still rubbish - Kane makes his own goals and the stat does not take account of ... err ... goals or even shots on target

It's not what the stat is for - a player may score a screamer from outside the box but it wouldn't be an expected goal because the average player wouldn't score that most of the time (in fact nobody would most of the time).

Exactly - an expected goal stat that does not predict expected goals lol

It does, just that those screamers are rare and you should be well aware that Kane can score those on any day anyway. You still don't captain Kane against Chelsea, for example, just because he is capable of scoring screamers though.

It doesn’t though, a player may get 100 great chances, miss them all because he is rubbish and have the best xg ever, the deadliest finisher in the game who has 2 half chances and scores both has the worst xg ever ... emperor’s new clothes me thinks ... any one each to their own

The xG is measured by how an average player would do in a goal scoring situation.

If you think a player would get 100 great chances and miss them all, you're saying that he's 100 times worse than the average professional footballer, which cannot be true 🙂

It's just to predict the likelihood of goals to follow. Of course you're not supposed to blindly base your decisions on it. The quality of the player comes first. But it's still a much better stat than say, shots on target, because it doesn't take into account the quality of shots. It could include absolutely shite shots from impossible angles.

                      things xG doesn't consider...
                      shots on target
                      goals actually scored
                      quality of player (Messi? Kane?)
                      quality of team
                      hitting the woodwork

its as useful as a chocolate teapot and as accurate as a blunderbuss and people blindly lap it when some one comes on here quoting it in support of some 5.5 mill midfielder who scores one goal every 10 games

I am WCing and getting rid. He doesnt look as sharp as last year. In that spurs side there is no doubt he will score goals and get assists but taking quite a lot of money in my team and I have kane and Davies so enough to cover.
