The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 7

Suddenly the field has cleared again.

Having appeared to be awash with options and configurations up front, Harry Kane is now surely established as the undisputed primary target in attack.

And while Romelu Lukaku toiled in another four-goal victory for Manchester United, the other contenders for our frontlines have lost some ground.

Alvaro Morata’s early withdrawal against Manchester City has temporarily de-railed his burgeoning reputation and Fantasy ownership.

Confirmed as a hamstring issue by manager Antonio Conte, we must now wait on a further prognosis before we can be clear if this is a setback that will knock the Spaniard out.

Thankfully, Conte appears to be playing down the problem but the Morata bandwagon has hit the buffers for now.

With Sergio Aguero sidelined with a rib injury, Kane and Lukaku seem largely unchallenged heading into the break.

Despite his seven goals in as many Gameweeks, that’s a scenario that flatters Lukaku.

With news breaking post-deadline that the Belgian was struggling with a knock sustained in training, the initial thoughts were that he could miss today’s meeting with Crystal Palace.

He started and completed 90-minutes, but was subdued and failed to deliver the anticipated threat to a beleaguered opponent.

Kane, in contrast, was a menace from the first kick against Huddersfield until Spurs shifted down the gears in the second period.

But, typically this season, Lukaku could and should have matched Kane’s two-goals. He rolled a big chance wide before converting a tap-in from Anthony Martial’s centre.

Maybe the Belgian wasn’t fully fit but, in terms of the “eye-test” and pure performance, Kane demonstrated that he is on a different level at present.

My captain selection – switched to Lukaku overnight – was steered by the fears that Palace would capitulate, with the Terriers perhaps presenting a tougher opponent to Spurs.

To an extent that was true. United had more shots and had five big chances to Spurs’ two.

But Lukaku simply did not expose the Eagles frailty and help himself to the big score that I and many others hoped for and expected.

With United’s schedule now stiffening, Lukaku will doubtless suffer some sales, but those losses would be far more severe were it not for the setbacks for Morata and Aguero.

He may well survive in squads with Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus perhaps the most viable and “secure” alternative left standing to partner Kane in our forward lines.

With talk of Aguero returning in four weeks or less, a move for Jesus could also be a short-term measure, aimed at capturing Man City’s plum home encounters with Stoke City and Burnley.

But given that they sandwich a Champions League tie with Napoli, it will be interesting to see if Pep Guardiola attempts to manage the minutes of his only out-and-out striker.

Arguably, those jostling with Kane and Lukaku for our attention have failed to build their case heading into the internationals.

Kane looks untouchable, and while Lukaku is nowhere near as devastating, he continues to prove effective. That might be just enough for now.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Any early thoughts?

    A) Save FT
    B) Eriksen > Hazard
    C) Mkhi & Chicharito > Fellaini/Shaqiri/6.0 & Morata
    D) Other

    1FT / 1.0 ITB

    Elliot
    Davies / Monreal / Jones / Cedric
    Eriksen / Salah / Mkhi
    Kane / Jesus / Chicharito

    Foster / Carroll / Mbemba / RLC

I can't think for the life of me why you'd want to bring in Alli right now. So many better options...SIlva, Sterling, Sane, Salah, Coutinho, Mane, even Miki may be a better shout. Hazard not ready to deliver the goods either. DeBruyne looking a better pick in that spot or Eriksen.

Keep Alli for Bournemouth at home or offload for an in form mid?

Thinking of saving next GW and then doing..
Bavies in for Yoshida + Sane (8 or other 8.9m) in for Alli.
    WC in GW 12.

    Fabianski.
    Kolasinac, Yoshida, Mee.
    Atsu, Alli, Choupo-Moting, Eriksen.

Is goal involvement more important than actual goals/assists?
I've done a small analysis of all the main forwards.

Jesus 22% - Low goal involvement, but I expect him to become more involved with Aguero out. Also hasn't player every game so far, thus skewing the %. Man city have good fixtures and will likely keep scoring freely like they are currently.

Lukaku 38% - Comparably low involvement. Because of United's favourable run of fixtures, Man Utd have been free scoring. Now that United's fixtures have turned for the worse it will probably reduce Lukaku's output.

Kane 42% (60% in september) - Great goal involvement after he got over August. Fixtures aren't that great, but probably the most essential player in the game, and the goals will keep on coming.

Lacazette 44% - Fixtures aren't great. Alright goal involvement, could be higher if he player more minutes.

Vardy 55% - Good fixtures, Leicester won't score a whole lot of goals, but when they do, its likely to come from Vardy.

Morata 66% - Good fixtures, high goal involvement. If he is fit he should be a great pick.

It depends also on how many goals a team scores. Man City have scored 22 while Leicester and Arsenal have only scored 9 so far.

I dislike Lukaku but I guess his involvement will increase against the bigger teams given the way Jose sets up his team against the big boys. We'll see lot of Lukaku goals in 1-0 United wins. Typical Jose Mourinho scoreline.

Yes and no surely? The ideal player is one with high goal involvement in a team that scores loads. Possibly the closest player to this definition would be Kane. But more likely you'd get a player with low involvement in a team who score well (e.g. City or Liverpool) or higher involvement in a team that don't score as well (e.g. Chelsea).

I think you have to weigh up the specific teams. For instance, City are likely to blow away lesser teams (at least at the moment) 4 or 5 nil. So even if Jesus or Aguero have "only" 30% involvement, they're still likely to do better than forwards who hog the team's goals, but who only win 1-0 most of the time.

Danilo is right footed, Delph is left footed. More importantly, Delph played as an inverted fullback - something which Danilo might not have pulled off that well.

Talking about Fantasy prospects, you shouldn't be going anywhere near Delph even if he's nailed.

Guys, need a little help from you guys. FPL provides me the monthly top-scorers in a particular league. Now, while calculating the scores, does it include all games as at the start of the month or games occuring in the respective months.

For example, like today, all of today's points will get added to the September scores or that for October?

    Thanks in advance 🙂

Since the gameweek started in September, they will be added to September. Do check it once after the gameweek scores are updated.

    Best of these?

    A. Otamendi (STO, BUR, wba, ARS, lei)
    B. David Luiz (cry, WAT, bou, MUN, wba)

Don't have money for more expensive ones, and don't expect too much attackingwise, so cleansheets crucial to get value for money...

    Thanks.
