The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 7 – Sunday

Sunday’s events did little to solve our striker problem.

We began the day scouting Alexandre Lacazette, who chose to blank in an Arsenal home match for the first time – frustrating the 265,000 who had acquired his services with the Brighton fixture in mind.

The Frenchman was also withdrawn early, with 20 minutes remaining, as Arsene Wenger handed Olivier Giroud some oxygen. That will always be an issue.

Clearly, Lacazette doesn’t fit into the same untouchable bracket as Alexis Sanchez; Wenger feels comfortable hooking and even omitting the striker from his starting line-up when he sees fit.

Combine that with the lack of away goals to this point, and it’s clear that the Gunners option has much ground to make up before we can consider him in the same bracket as Harry Kane or Romelu Lukaku.

Even as a third striker, we’d have to keep Alvaro Morata and Gabriel Jesus ahead in the pecking order for now.

So where does Roberto Firmino sit in those ranks?

His omission from Jurgen Klopp’s teamsheet was perhaps no big surprise; we were braced for it.

However, it arrives as another telling blow to the Brazilian’s stock at a time when we desperately needed him to show form and cement his status as a third striker.

Now we will surely continue to see his ownership and value plummet over the break, with the confidence of his 1.2 million owners broken by a run of blanks and Klopp’s selection.

Daniel Sturridge hardly passed his audition to claim the central role, and Firmino will surely be re-instated for the visit of Manchester United in Gameweek 8, regardless of his long-haul flight home.

But Liverpool’s attack are clearly faltering. They relied on the genius of Philippe Coutinho for today’s breakthrough, but it’s not the chance creation that’s broken – it’s purely their finishing.

The numbers show that Klopp’s attack have averaged 20 goal attempts over their last two Gameweeks, with three big chances per match. But only 20% of their efforts have hit the target, compared with 41% from Gameweeks 1-5.

Sturridge wasn’t the solution, and Firmino will return, but is the damage already done?

There will be some who end up holding Firmino just because of the lack of alternatives: we have Jamie Vardy and a cast of mis-firing, inconsistent candidates at 8.5 or below.

Just like Lukaku, we may look for a change but arrive at Gabriel Jesus as the only route.

The Brazilian is clearly an extremely credible candidate, with the fixtures to fly. But he’s also a player who – by his own recent admission – was playing the role of a “winger” or not playing at all when Sergio Aguero was fit.

We can settle on Jesus for now, but few of us will believe that it’s for keeps.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Is Hegazi, Mkhi, Salah > Otamendi, Silva, Sterling -4 madness?

    Ota could be Azpi too.

Don't think there's such a thing as City overkill given form & fixtures, though personally would prefer the attacking triple up.

Brought Ramsey in with my FT last week but didn't get to see the Arsenal v Brighton game. Anyone watch it and how did he play? Was he positioned in the double pivot or further up field? Disappointing he didn't get anything 🙁

Double pivot. Was very good and attacking, could've definitely got some points. Had a quality shot from close range miraculously saved. Keep for sure.

The problem with Ramsey is he always looks threatening and gets in good positions or has chances where he's "unlucky" or "should score". Quite simply, he just can't finish at the moment. Unless he starts rolling points in, I'd look to get rid. You could end up having him the whole season if you go by the eye test alone

I was at the game yesterday. He was very lively in the first half and was getting in to good positions but drifted towards the latter stages of the second half and gave the ball away a lot and consequently the fans got on his back a bit, unfairly in my opinion. I've got him and are definitely keeping. At that price he's well worth it, just don't rely on returns every week.

I know, just that Jones' fixtures aren't the best (though I'm sure they'll still keep a couple of clean sheets) and playing Fernandez might not be worse than taking a hit for Azpi (though I definitely want him long-term)

    Bench: Elliot, Hegazi, Mbemba, Chalobah.

Played my free hit this weekend and scored 94 points, which was 40 more than my original team. I stocked up on Spurs, united and arsenal players and it paid off.

I think this chip can do some real damage in certain gameweeks.

I agree, it could be a really strong chip in the odd week. But I would guess that most on here scout a few weeks ahead and would have cover lined up for weeks like that. e.g. this week you would have had Arsenal in for a week already after (WBA) and would be looking to get/add to Spurs for (hud) followed by (BOU)

Top work. I had drafted a free hit team this week and would have scored 98 and was very close and would have gained nearly 30 points but I just thought that it might be more profitable when there are hardly any fixtures. Although I'm not sure it will gain more than 30 points or indeed 40 so I would take that and run, Lovely stuff

Firmino should start against Pool so give him another week although it's frustrating to own him

Liverpool's set piece defending is bad so mkhi could nick an assist by chance. Probably will ditch Mkhi after the Huds match

Sorry about this dumb question, but when is the best time to play your free hit? When your team's fixtures are bad, to catch a dgw?

Probably the xmas period or the FA cup gw with many blanks

      Idk tbh.. it's subjective!

    Morning,

    thinking of a mini-wildcard for -4 here.

    Foster Elliot
    Kolasinac Davies TAA Suttner Prödl
    Mkihtarian Salah Ritchie Brady Carroll
    Kane Lukaku Firmino

    2 FT 0.4 ITB

    A) Firmino, Lukaku, Mkhitarian > Morata (if fit), Jesus, Sterling
    B) Firmino, Kolasinac, Prödl > Vardy, Luiz, Daniels
    C) Firmino, Mkhitarian, Prödl > Vardy, Sterling, Jones

Would you like any of those or have other considerations?

    Foster
    Davies,Jones,Naughton
    Silva,Mkhitarian,Moting,Groß
    Kane,Lukaku,Morata

    Elliot,Carroll,Lowe,Mmemba

    Thinking Miki > Hazard maybe
Lowe > Bellerin or Azpi and play 4~3~3

    Should I WC?

    Hart/Elliot (Like both of those)
Jones/Dawson/Daniels/Mee/Suttner (Not sure on Dawson or Suttner)
Alli/Mkhi/Ritchie/Mooy/Carroll (Alli will come good, Mkhi is on watch, not sure on the rest)
    Kane/Lukaku/Firmino (Not sure on Bobby)

I keep trying to convince myself it's Sterling but if you don't have Silva then he is the safer option.

Really thought he would go to 5.8.

Suppose he is in the casuals squad.

I'm more tempted by Courtois tbh as neither as likely to get big hauls.

It looks good but I couldn't have that mf. Sterling not nailed and could end up having to play two of Ritchie, Fellatio and King. Looking though, I can't see where funds could be freed up to improve, maybe GK?

    (1) Firmino + Mkhi to Kane + GroB (-4)?

But I don't have any City which worries me a lot. Have Morata and Eriksen.

    (2) Kaku + Mkhi to Kane + Silva (-4) will give me that.

      1. Ward not just because of his assist against Everton. I have watched Burnley a few times. He goes up a lot. Even Brady having to cover him when they were both on the left.

Thoughts on this WC team appreciated:

    Fabianski
    Stones, Jones, Trippier
    Eriksen, Sterling, Coutinho
    Kane, Jesus, Vardy

    Elliot, Ward, Fellani, Hunemier

A few risks due to prices but have tried to spread the cost across the team to maximise value. Will hope for a Morata, Luiz and RLC fall at some stage to consider them

    Fabianski
    BDavies Jones Simpson Kola
    Miki Atsu Eriksen
    Kane Kaku Morata

    Subs: Elliot, Carroll, Chalobah, Mbemba

    GW8 Kaku to Jesus
GW9 Miki to Sane (If he starts GW8)
GW11 Eriksen to Mane (fixtures turn)

    good plan?

Sounds decent.. though im not sure about Eriksen to mane.. spurs fixtures already toughens up from gw9.. nyt you have plenty of time..

Monitor the city situation..Silva might be a safer choice

Thanks mate 🙂 About Eriksen... the idea is GW10 he has United and then Arsenal while Pool have good fixtures. Its like with Kaku Im getting him back after the Chelsea game, same with Eriksen after fixture go back to normal 🙂
