Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope

The current lull in domestic action allows us an opportunity to check in on the latest band of miscreants to dominate our Suspension Tightrope ahead of Gameweek 8.

Essentially, the Suspension Tightrope widget keeps a tally of cards accumulated from all domestic matches across the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Premier League.

It is available under the Watchlist rankings in your right sidebars or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet.

We’ll update the widget after each Gameweek, and roll out articles such as this one, which go over the Fantasy implications of the cards collected.

This includes the latest suspensions, along with updates of the yellow card totals of the most regular perpetrators as they edge towards a domestic ban and climb onto the ‘Suspension Tightrope’.

As mentioned in our first Suspension Tightrope article of the season, the FA have altered the curfew rules for players accumulating yellow and red cards in 2017/18.

According to this season’s FA handbook.

A Player accumulating five cautions will be automatically suspended for one first-team competitive match if he has accumulated those five cautions in (up to and including) the number of matches in the relevant League as set out in the table below:

LeagueLeague Matches
Premier League19
EFL19
National League23

A Player accumulating ten cautions will be automatically suspended for two FTCM if he has accumulated those ten cautions in (up to and including) the number of matches in the relevant League as set out in the table below:

LeagueLeague Matches
Premier League32
EFL37
National League37

Basically, players have to avoid five bookings over their respective team’s first 19 Premier League matches in order to sidestep a suspension.

Similarly, they must steer clear of 10 cautions over their side’s 32 opening top-flight matches to prevent a ban.

From a Fantasy point of view, then, this means that Gameweek 19 – on December 23 – is currently the curfew for five yellow cards.

And Gameweek 32 – on Saturday March 31 – is currently the curfew for 10 yellow cards.

However, we’ve recently spoken to the FA for some clarification on this matter and they have confirmed that, regardless of when their fixtures fall, the 19th and 32nd Premier League fixtures are the cut-off points for five and ten bookings respectively.

So if Arsenal, for example, had a match postponed in November, which later fell after December 23rd (ie, the current date when 19 Gameweeks could be completed), then their players would still be liable to a suspension in that 19th fixture.

The second cut-off point is particularly pertinent, then, bearing in mind that the final of the Carabao Cup will take place in Gameweek 28 and the FA Cup Quarter Finals fall in Gameweek 31.

Those teams involved in either of those will face a postponed fixture and, therefore, their players will have a curfew for 10 cards extended.

Any ban to the current crop of players on four yellows – Palace’s Jason Puncheon, Southampton’s Oriol Romeu, Swansea’s Leroy Fer and West Ham right-back Pablo Zabaleta – would have minimal Fantasy impact.

Lower down, though, there are some big-hitters who currently sit just two yellows shy of a single-match suspension

Chelsea duo David Luiz and Marcos Alonso, along with Man City’s Nicolas Otamendi and Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, are among the 11 most owned defenders in FPL.

Worryingly, Alonso – boasting a 17.7% ownership – has already surpassed his tally of two yellows in the Premier League from last season.

Otamendi has collected a yellow card in three of the last five Gameweeks and, having earned nine bookings in each of the last two seasons, faces a tough task to avoid toppling off the Tightrope.

Potentially, once they have collected a fourth yellow, their managers could look to manage their respective fixtures in order to avoid picking up a ban for a “big match” against their league rivals.

So in Alonso’s case, Chelsea have a fixture against Manchester United in Gameweek 11. A booking in either Gameweek 8 or 9 could see him protected in the Gameweek 10 trip to Bournemouth.

For Otamendi, the clash with Arsenal – also in Gameweek 11 – looks the hotspot. So Pep Guardiola will be very wary of playing the Argentine in Gameweek 10 at West Brom, should the defender pick up a card in either Gameweek 8 or 9.

On the plus side, neither Otamendi or Alonso would seem likely to be called into action for their respective Carabao Cup ties which lie between Gameweeks 9 and 10 with this scenario in mind.

Or being cynical about it, back-to-back bookings in the next two Gameweeks would even allow them to serve out the suspension in the Carabao Cup, giving them the midweek off and getting the ban out of the way in advance.

Elsewhere, Newcastle United’s Matt Ritchie is the other standout name here, having served up four assists in the opening seven.

The Scotland international was booked three times in the first four Gameweeks but has now gone three league matches without incurring the referee’s wrath.

Finally, Brighton’s Tomer Hemed is the only player suspended from domestic duties in the Premier League. After serving the first of a three-match ban last weekend, he won’t return to action until the Gameweek 10 home clash against Southampton.

That match against the Saints is the first of four home matches in six for Chris Hughton’s side, which also includes a trip to Swansea City.

Having bagged two goals and an assist in his last two outings at the Amex, Hemed – at 4.9 – could yet emerge as a valid option for those on the lookout for a cut-price pick in attack.

    How's this team looking?

    Foster, Gomes
    Alonso, Kolasinac, Davies, Otamendi, Mee
    Erkisen, Richarlison, Moting, Mooy, Carroll
    Kane, Jesus, Vardy

    Thanks for any input.

Mee, Richarlison, Moting & Mooy are likely rotating for two spots dependent on fixture so 4 most of the time.

Midfield is too weak for me but I understand it’s an allowance that has to be made when going with a pricey defence and attack.

Going for a flexible 4-3-3 / 5-2-3 I take it? It’ll be interesting to see how the popular new formations work out.

Yes. I would try to get one more name in midfield.

Probably need to find about 2mil

Maybe Downgrade one goalie to Elliott.
      Mooy to 4.5m mid

Azpi instead of Alonso, Monreal instead of Kola would free some cash up.

If you're only playing 3 mids every week then you need one more premium mid. I would be tempted to drop Eriksen for Silva too.

i´ll follow you in the flexible 5-2-3 or 4-3-3 formation depending on fixtures and inside that premise i think your picks in defense are good but can they be even better in terms of value? Or to say, can you have players less expensive but with almost same chance of output?
For instance, Alonso vs Azpi? 0.4 plus
      Kolasinac-Bellerin 0.1 plus
      Foster vs Elliott 0.5

1m saved which you could either use to beef up Mooy which is not a good pick anylonger or you can downgrade Mooy also to a say Fellaini or Atsu even. Then you have enough to get Morata when he is ready or you could turn Vardy to Firmino in the meantime and at a later stage go for Morata/Laca

or you could spilt the money made on those and get Jones and Walker instead of Ota and Ward, then obviously leaning more towards 5-2-3 ofc? Just thoughts popping in my head when i saw your team

Only just read your detailed reply, thanks for taking the time to write all this.
I think Alonso will end up outscoring Azpi and the foster/Gomes rotation is amazing throughout the season.
I agree that Mooy is not a particulalrly good pick but he is compares favourably to Grob and other players of the same price.

i have a suspicion that Pedro is the closest beside Haz and Kante to be nailed, but he has had some niggles and stuff to deal with. Contemplating to give him a chance actually on my wc, due to Morata prob out and willian with a long flight coupled with easy fixture for Chelsea im leaning towards it. As he is 7.9 it wil make an easy swap if it fails.

    Foster Elliot
    Davies Otamendi Monreal Jones Mbemba
    Mkhitaryan DSilva Ritchie Carroll King
    Kane Lukaku Jesus

    0.8 itb

Tempted to get some Chelsea def cover, the cheapest being Courtois.
To do this, I'll have to downgrade Ritchie to a 5.7, thinking of Gross or Choupo.

    What would you do?

I think a chelsea defender is a good option now. I too would like a chelsea defender but at what cost.

Of your mids I think mkhi is the one who I would sacrifice for any change.

Not sure about Luiz but I see why you might think him (6m). Maybe cause I had Luiz and he stung.

Not posting this to brag. With an OR of 21k and all my chips and WC still in tact, what sort of finish should I be aiming for? Been a while since I took FF seriously and haven't been doing this well this early in many seasons. Top finish was 6k back in 12/13 I think?

Way to early to tell, 1 bad week and you could be down to 500k again.
It's really subjective but I've always aimed for top 1%, so with 5m players I aim to hit top 50k.
Obviously hitting top 10k would be excellent but top 1% and you should still be happy with your season.

that's so true couple of weeks ago i was 11k OR then in just 2 weeks of a just average score had a fall to 285k or something ,but know that it just takes a couple of good rounds to be back there which means couple of bad rounds and it goes the other way....to early to tell good luck 🙂

A decent OR whilst nice, is still fairly meaningless at this stage. Not enough points dispersal in the top million.

I always think November-December is the crunch period in terms of positioning yourself in the top 100/200k. Christmas in particular allows the more focused managers to gain big jumps.

Some of us have been fortunate thus far to avoid having to make fairly big decisions. It only takes a Sanchez at West Ham type haul for him to throw himself into the mix. We had one week of Aguero and Morata vying for potential 'essential' status before they picked up injuries. At some point in the not too distant future Sanchez, Hazard, Coutinho and a returning Aguero are going to warrant consideration with all the big hitters. It was around this time of the season last year that Alli began to hit form. Deciding between all these big hitters will shape our seasons.

    Chelsea defence

    Azpi 6.6 has 14% ownership, 630 mins
    Alonso 7.0 has 17% and 598 minutes
    Luiz 5.9 has 13% and 446 minutes
    Cahill 6.3 has 3.8% and 224 minutes
    Moses 6.5 has 1% and 431 minutes

Rudiger is 5.9, has 2% ownership and 540 minutes

Is Rudiger going under the radar here? 6/7 games he's had 90 minutes. His price is joint lowest of this lot and his ownership is really low.

Will he hold his place when Luiz and Cahill aren't suspended? He did play alongside them in gw1 where Moses missed out.

He gets forward a lot and picks up baps. In that sense he's as good as owning a Chrlsea mid.

Other than Hazard he'll probably outscore all their other mids, so its like having a Chelsea mid.

Dilemma and need opinions please! My team is here: https://fantasy.premierleague.com/a/team/594066

Firmino + Mkhitaryan OUT but who to transfer in? Options I am considering are:

    1. Sterling & Vardy
    2. Hazard & Chicharito

I'm leaning towards the latter, because we all know what Hazard can do when he gets in the mood. Has very good fixtures the next few weeks, potential to be a massive differential. Thoughts please?

I'm not sure about him either, but with Hazard in the squad I have Kane and Lukaku up top so plan that Cheech would be warming the bench. Does have some relatively good fixtures on the way?

But then I suppose if that's the plan then I should spend as little as possible on my third striker to free up funds for another upgraded mid from Man City?

Get Sterling and accept that you may have to switch him in 4/5 GWs. Anything extra is a bonus. Can see a big haul in one of the next two home games

Thanks, I'm sure no matter which option I go for it will be the wrong one 😉

Sterling seems to play more centrally and more of a scorer than an assister, so I'd say Sane.

Mkhit could be transferred out for a city mid..but if you don't fancy that then it's still gtg.

Not for a hit, looks decent without the -4 though.

    Current WC team; ratings appreciated

Looks nice. 3rd mid is a little weak. Hopefully Haz will start firing against CPL, but will be missing Morata.

The only reason I haven't wildcarded yet is that, if I do, I will go to 4-4-2 and basically forget a 3rd striker.

Never played that system before but the absolute dearth of any decent cheap 3rd strikers is making it seem an attractive proposition.

Genuinely nothing decent striker wise for less than £8.5M this season.

Either him or Calvert Lewin, but Swansea don't really look like they're going to score a lot.

I am seriously contemplating wildcarding, especially as my OR is atrocious.

    A Bailly to Stones?
    B Lukaku to Jesus?
    C A+B for a hit?

Fabianski instead of Forster and maybe upgrade RLC to Doucouré.

I want no part of any Palace players, they look doomed already.

What to do with this lot:

    Foster
    Davies - Jones - Bertrand
    Salah - Mkhitaryan - Carroll - Eriksen
    Lukaku - Kane - Chicharito

    Bench: Elliot, Hegazi, Mbemba, Chalobah.

1FT, 0.2M in the bank.. Thinking maybe Mkhi to Silva, but also want to get rid of Hegazi, Chicha.. Any ideas guys??

I too am looking to ship hegazi. There seems to be good value in that price bracket.

Simpson maybe worth a punt as would a burnley defender. A stoke defender may also be of interest for that spot in a weeks time.

I rhink taking out mkhi is a good idea. Silva or possibly pedro if you want to gamble a little.

Chicharito an issue for sure. I have abraham and he too is a concern but I too am preoccupied with takung care of hegazi and possibly salah to worry too much about abraham. Needs must

Mkhi to silva looks like a good move considering fixtures, be patient with chicharito, he still has good fixtures

A little early but looking for early feelers. Of coursed I would not pull trigger until deadline day.

    Forster
    Otamendi Naughton Davies Hegazi
    Salah Eriksen Silva
    Abraham Kane Lacazette

    Lossl Ritchie Mbemba Cork

    Salah > Pedeo/Sterling
    Hegazi > Simpson/Cedric/Azpil

    Another move

    1ft 1.3m itb

The Hegazi to Azpil would include the midfield move at a cost of (-4) to free up funds.

My only issue with azpil long term is I woulf like funds in 3 weeks time to upgrade abraham to lukaku ideally but may have to settle on vardy or the like

So should i just get azpil and worry about taking care of a 3rd striker later and not start getting ready now.

There is plenty of good value defenders anyway so do I really need a chelsea defender considering the cost. I think not but I am not great at this game

I would go lacazette to Lukaku in a few weeks instead, it's too much of a stretch to go Tammy to Lukaku

You've got a strong rest of the team, the cheap 3rd striker is the inevitable price you pay, but there's several decent options

Thaks for the feedback. If course getting lukaku for abraham would mean losing salah and eriksen long term

Kane the best captain option for the next gw?

I did a Mark and got rid of him in a wildcard before September, now I'm looking to get him back after his 3 hauls 😀
