The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 8

Manchester City are threatening to break Fantasy Football.

An irresistible attacking force, they appear to be capable of skittling any defence that stands in their way and, in doing so, they are presenting Fantasy managers with an extraordinary array of options.

The challenge, of course, is to exploit their incredible form to the full. This becomes a more thankless task with the passing of each and every Gameweek.

Today’s 7-2 victory over a shell-shocked Stoke City took Pep Guardiola’s side to a total of 17 goals from their last three home matches and 24 from the last five Gameweeks.

I had to go back and re-check those numbers, leaving me wonder if we’ve ever seen a single team provide such a relentless avalanche of Fantasy points.

The underlying statistics are even more staggering.

A tally of 103 shots, 73 of which have arrived in the box with 28 big chances. Guardiola’s side have fired a shot every 4.6 minutes over the past five Gameweeks.

Three City players scored double figures in today’s victory, with Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva also fetching nine and seven points respectively. And this without Sergio Aguero in the mix.

Indeed, the array of choice available has become bewildering.

Raheem Sterling’s 15-points surely underlines his potential during this, his most prolific spell of his career. The “winger” has now scored six goals and supplied two assists over five starts in the last six Gameweeks.

Sterling has been in Guardiola’s starting line-up each time when available from Gameweek 3 onwards and, priced at just 8.0; he surely justifies his rank at the top of our midfield Watchlist. He is already the top transfer target ahead of Gameweek 9’s visit from Burnley.

Then there is Sane.

Perhaps a more traditional wide player, less inclined to tuck inside to flank the central striker, the German has produced four goals and three assists from the last five Gameweeks. However, he has only made the starting line-up over the last three.

De Bruyne and Silva remain the creators. Less explosive, they are nonetheless consistent points scorers that also scream for our attention. The latter struck his first goal of the season today, while De Bruyne chalked up a fifth assist.

It’s difficult to separate the pair, but Silva’s price, at 1.5 cheaper, is surely a key factor. Crucially, as today’s goal indicated, the Spaniard also appears to have upped his direct threat to opponents, adding a new convincing string to his creative bow.

These are just the standout midfield offerings. When we start to contemplate the situation up front, our decision process becomes even more cloudy.

Gabriel Jesus reacted to Sergio Aguero’s return from injury with a brace and a 13-point return today. We now have to consider how Guardiola will marry the pair.

He will surely want to avoid disrupting the almost perfect blend he has discovered, and neither Sane nor Sterling can really warrant exclusion.

Could that lead to Guardiola rotating his two central strikers, or will he revert back to pairing them in attack, sacrificing one of his support attackers?

Jesus owners will be counting today’s points but also looking ahead to the Gameweek 9 meeting with Burnley and wondering Pep’s next move.

But surely we have to question whether Jesus and Aguero warrant our investment regardless.

Even if their minutes are managed from here on, while City’s thirst for goals remains unquenchable, perhaps we just can’t lose.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

So I rage sold Mkhi last night for Sane and I'm already regretting it. Can see him being benched next weekend. Hate pep.

Sane will get you points but you will be praying couple minutes before seeing team sheet

Well it's true that Sane may not start every game, but he has shown he can be clinical off the bench. City have so much scoring power that 20-30 mins can result in nice returns. Relax imo.

The move is not bad in itself but I don't understand why you would do it now when there is a midweek game and a week of training.

The way to go with City assets is have 2-3 of them so you can afford to swallow the odd benching. They'll all more than justify their price in the medium term. Personally I think Mkhi has been poor value since the Pogba injury.

      Arsenals defence can't be trusted.

Utds tough fixtures proved Jose will park the bus which doesn't help attacking players like Mkhi to get points. But he has hud coming up I suppose....

True, but they haven't had the easiest of beginning schedules.
Daniels will get attacking returns and up against those fixtures I guess it at least increases his chances.

All fair points, just looked up his fixtures and Bournemouth are yet to get thrashed, max they've conceded is 3 goals, worth some thought for the reasons you gave, I had considered doing it for gw11 (clark to Daniels) but thought Bournemouth defence nah, maybe I underestimated them a bit

I guess it's a st least a calculated risk because we can hope for some attacking returns against the easier fixtures, even if he does miss out on a clean sheet.

If he drops to 4.8 he would be a real bargain.

Also MUN have overperformed in terms of cleanies so far, they really should have conceded vs LIV

Nothing casual about it, Mourinho defence, cheapest pick who’s always fix and nailed

Always easier to degrade to the 4.5 that becomes evident for the season - which has not really happened yet

I’m not a casual and had him since week 1. First ever season I’ve not had two 4.5 rotating keepers and it’s liberating! Not getting annoyed at picking the wrong keeper each week, you should give it a go!

DDG and Jones is the way to go from GW12, you get two for the price of one Lukaku and will be a 12 point week for most games, pretty much matches Lukaku as C.

Morning dzz, average week despite having sterling and jesus. thoughts on this below? 1FT and 0.2m itb...any need to use a WC? my team is TOO flex at the moment in terms of formations

    Forster
    Valencia • Bertrand • Wimmer
    Salah • Ritchie • Mkhi • Sterling
    Kane • Joselu • Jesus

Elliot • Kolasinac (eve) • Carroll (LEI) • Mee

A: Save FT, do 2/3 transfers next gw. but means enduring mkhi price drops
    B: Mkhi >> Antonio/Chopu-moting or anyone upto 8.4m.
    C: Mkhi >> RLC..upgrade joselu >> vardy next gw..will stick a 4-3-3 then
    C: Something else?

Those with triple city attackers (jesus sterling silva) how long do you plan to keep them?

Next 5- BUR wba ARS lei hud

I like liverpool fixtures after next gw and want to double up on their mids. Not sure i want to sell any of city assets. So looking at a midfeild of Salah Coutinho Sterling Silva . (Coutinho over Vardy in a 4-4-2)

getting silva this week then switching him to coutinho next week. thats the plan at least

yh that could be a good strategy as well since coutinho have greater goal threat than silva

      team would be

      Elliot (4.0)
      Bavies Jones Daniels (Ward Naughton)
      Salah Coutinho Sterling Silva (RLC)
      Kane Jesus (4.5)

I have Jesus, Silva and Sterling

Was planning on Jesus to Morata (I did the opposite this week) once he's back and Aguero starts ruining Jesus.

And losing Sterling eventually (Silva is the season keeper)...probably to Richarlison.

Not sure I want to move any on now though!!!

You shouldn't. Those are crazy assumptions. Morata has hat trick against laughable Stoke defence because of injuries No Kante Chelsea clearly have problems

Have my eye on Coutinho for Mkhitaryan for GW10 but also a little uncertain as the fixtures are not traditionally good Liverpool fixtures

    Lukaku > Aguero gives:
    Sterling Richarlison Eriksen Salah
    Kane Aguero Abraham

That front 7 spells points for me

I'd be pretty cheesed off if I was left out of a side that had just scored 7. Especially the attacking players. No justification for it at all.

Who would you rather have for the foreseeable, all things considered:

    Coutinho

    D. Silva
