Rate My Wildcard Team Surgery

Welcome to the latest in a series of regular Rate My Wildcard Team articles that will be published at key points during the season when Fantasy Premier League managers are most likely to consider using this chip.

This article showcases the thoughts of two of the Fantasy Football Scout moderators and contributors team, Andy and Greenwindmill, who are wildcarding. Hopefully some of the key issues facing them will mirror your own.

Feel free to use this article thread to put forward your wildcard teams and to help others with their wildcard related issues.

Andy’s Wildcard Team

Key issues

  • With Manchester United’s Phil Jones (5.5) being his most expensive defender, Andy wonders whether he needs to spend more in defence to give him the flexibility to transfer in emerging, pricier options such as Chelsea’s Cesar Azpiliceuta, who has strong form and fixtures.
  • Will an improved fixture list signal an upturn in form for Andy’s pick of Romelu Lukaku, who historically thrives against minnows? Or will the Red Devils striker continue to deliver only average returns for his hefty price tag?
  • With Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata, Spurs Harry Kane and Lukaku in his frontline is he spending too much in attack?
  • Should Andy consider transferring in more Manchester City attackers? Currently he only has Raheem Sterling, who is not even guaranteed to start. Huge returns from the likes of Sergio Agueo, Leroy Sane or David Silva could see his rank nosedive. If Andy opts for one Sky Blue, would Sane be better?
  • Andy has waved goodbye to Christian Eriksen, ahead of a nice run of fixtures for Tottenham. Will he regret this decision?
  • Stoke’s Eric Choupo-Moting and Watford winger Richarlison are Andy’s preferred third and fourth midfielders, but should he be considering Wilfried Zaha instead of one of this duo?
  • Is a Burnley defensive double up of Nick Pope and Ben Mee wise, considering there is continued speculation linking Clarets boss Sean Dyche with the vacant Everton manager post? Furthermore once usual number one Tom Heaton returns from injury, most likely in January, will that leave Andy having to make an avoidable goalkeeper transfer?
  • Is Scott Dann a ‘magic bean’ too far? Crystal Palace have failed to earn a single clean sheet although the centre back’s fairytale attacking statistics do provide good reading.

Greenwindmill’s Wildcard Team

Key issues

  • Greenwindmill is keen to spread his budget well across all outfield positions to give him a strong 15 to cope with the busy winter fixture list. This involves two heavy hitters in midfield, two in attack and at the back representatives from three of the top four sides. Is he right to do this or should he look to focus more cash in one area, such as midfield?
  • Value for money has driven his selection. He believes that all 15 will justify their price tags. Are there any other well priced gems he should be considering?
  • Crystal Palace’s Julian Speroni has emerged as a strong budget stopper to be fielded alongside Newcastle’s Rob Elliot. Is the Eagles keeper really nailed on, or will Newcastle fan Greenwindmill be forced to field Elliot every week?
  • Like Andy, Greenwindmill has been entranced by Dann’s strong fixtures and attacking statistics. But with just 12 points so far will this magic bean ever become a double digit scoring beanstalk?
  • At home Liverpool’s defence is a work of art on fine canvass but away a mere scrappy sketch on the back of a napkin. Should Greenwindmill be putting faith in a Reds defender who cannot safely be fielded on the road?
  • Greenwindmill has shunned the Burnley defence. Is this a disastrous move, considering their clean sheet potential at home and strong bonus potential?
  • With Reuben Loftus-Cheek involved Greenwindmill has tripled up on Crystal Palace players? Is this too much coverage for a side that is already battling relegation? And what if Wilfried Zaha becomes a must-have asset?
  • Swansea’s Tammy Abraham is his favoured third striker, but should Greenwindmill be considering even cheaper options such as Everton’s Oumar Niasse or Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson or Josh King? Or should Greenwindmill instead opt for a strong premium priced frontline as Andy has?
  • Lukaku is in place as a potential short term move, to be replaced by Morata in Gamweek 14, when Chelsea’s fixtures improve. Is this a sound strategy? Will he regret not swooping for the Spanish striker earlier?

One of my WC drafts is identical to Andy's with 0.0 ITB. Another option is obviously to lose an expensive striker and strengthen midfield.

    Pope Elliott
    Azpi Jones Daniels Mee Duffy
    Salah Sané Sterling Richarlison RLC
    Kane Morata £6.5 (or £7 if Speroni>Pope)

Very difficult to ignore Lukaku and Aguero though. Would be easier if Niasse or DCL are nailed to start. Could go with Andy's team and replace Lukaku and a defender with a cheap striker and Alonso/Azpi before GW14.

Also Choupo-Moting has much better stats at home than away. 4 out of next 6 are away. Really like his fixtures from GW18.

I'm looking at a very similar team (Ward over Mee and Zaha rather than RLC) but with 5.7m for my third striker. The value doesn't appear to be with the forwards (currently). Sterling also allows a possible switch to Pogba. Have you considered Bald Silva over Sterling? His stats/ game time look promising...

Murray? I don't like many of the cheap strikers. Got Murray before his rise, then dropped him because I was sure I wouldn't keep him. Now I think he could've been an option for the next three gameweeks. Will probably try Niasse or DCL if I go with this team.

Yes, Sterling->Pogba or even Mané is a great option to have. Prefer Sterling and 0.3 more over Silva even though Silva's game time is more secure.

I don't intend on bringing in Murray, just that that's my remaining budget. Currently favouring DCL over Niasse. Silva appears to be more of an attacking threat over recent weeks, and that 'secured' game time is oh so sweet. I guess the 0.3m could be too. If Silva drops before the end of the IB it could sway me.

I see. DCL vs Niasse is a tough one. It looked like DCL was the safer choice but then Niasse started and scored vs Watford (DCL scored as a sub). From what I've read (not much) it seems that Everton fans prefer Niasse over DCL. Would be nice if someone knew more about this. And will Everton trust Unsworth or sign a new manager..?

Silva's minutes are tempting. According to xG Silva is underperforming while Sterling is overperforming, but Sterling gets in great positions.

Niasse or DCl will be gold if Unsworth is confirmed as manager, as expected.

Nice team ,same defence as mine (Francis instead of Daniels) and I have Lukaku up top with Murray. Morata would allow me Sane instead of 8.4 available and not sure how to fill that 4th mid spot.

Solid. 2x4.5 mids isn't optimal but could easily be fixed after a few gameweeks by downgrading a striker. Really want Dann as well. Crystal Palace look better now and Hodgson will make sure they get some clean sheets with their upcoming fixtures. Dann surely has to score in the near future.

The 2 4.5's are bench fodders. Will start 4 defenders each week unless they have bad fixtures.

Yeah, defence has great fixtures. RLC should deliver some points as well, as long as he keeps his place when Benteke returns. Will have a benching headache every gameweek after wildcarding but feels good to have 15 players who normally start

I think it’s now or never for Mr. Lukaku; good fixtures for a renowned minnows crusher.

Assuming When Zlatan comes into the frey next month Lukaku loses the only tangible edge over City attackers or Morata - Security of Starts and minutes.

As having never owned him this season I’m going for him knowing fair well that a Newcastle blank will cost me value.

All hoping ManU get that rude awakening this int’l break of their awful football boosted by a healthy midfield.

My expectations are low for him which can only mean an upside getting him now at his original price of 11.5

In general I don't think a big three up front is ideal, when they absolutely have to perform week in week out to justify their price tags... I think I'll be going 3-5-2, and not just because it looks so much cooler than 3-4-3 😆

I'd go one or the other - i.e. I would avoid a Vardy / Firmino type 3rd striker

So far this season I have stuck to 3 premium strikers but did have Firmino for a while (too long) - now back to my favoured Kane / Kun / Morata

Keeping an eye on my PPG averages - the strikers have been disappointing so far with only 1 gw where they have all scored additional points, but I'll take 2 out of 3 hitting each week

      Goalkeeper PPG : 4.45
      Defender PPG : 4.68
      Midfield PPG : 5.05
      Forward PPG : 5.06

Moving from 3-5-2 to 4-4-2. I believe its even better. I don't see many consistent midfielders or attackers for their price tag and i see many clean sheets from small teams with cheap defenders..

All these WC-teams, and I never saw Mahrez popping up. Jonty spoke about not having too many magic beans. But how about punts? I've got 2 in my book, mahrez and christensen. Here's my WC team
    Pope - Speroni
    Jones - Christensen - Gomez - Mee - Francis
    Salah - Mahrez - Sterling - Zaha - Richarlison
    Kane - Kün - Murray.
Might play 3-5-2 al lot of times. Mahrez > Pogba&upgrade Christensen if he doesn't keep playing are moves I consider.

Much prefer GW's team here, but some general thoughts:

    1. Three big-hitters up-front makes no sense to me. We know that defenders and goalies score more points-per-million than their similarly-priced forwards, so the idea that 'Vertonghen is a luxury' but, say, 'Choupo is a great enabler' is just daft. Azpi, the Spurs' centre-backs, Otamendi/Stones ... they will all outscore the Gross/Shaqiri crowd, but people are terrified of investing in a strong defence. Why? Mathematically, it's bonkers. Vertonghen will out-score Gross by the end of the season (assuming they both stay fit), so pick him. I'm reminded of (I think, apologies if wrong) Jonty saying on the scoutcast a few weeks ago that he didn't want a premium defence because it was no fun hoping for clean-sheets. For me, it's no fun scoring fewer points than I could. Also, you can't captain all three big-hitters, so their value is further reduced. It's bad risk-management. The more 10mil-plus players you have in your team, the more it hurts when they're injured/rotated - and this season there are soooo many great 8-9.5 mids instead. With an evenly-balanced squad which 'leans back' a little, this risk is reduced. I think people are so keen to cling on to 3-up-front because in previous years there has been a decent mid-priced bargain. Unless Vardy finds some consistent form, there simply isn't one this year, so surely that template has gone?

    2. In both these teams, there seems to be too much relience on players who look to have decent fixtures for the next month or two, but then most of the squad (in particular the cheap defenders) will need to be replaced before Christmas, which will inevitably mean hits. Surely the point of a WC is to pick as many first-choice players as you can from good teams? On which note - yes, three Palace players is clearly too much. Scott Dann is only going to score points when he actually finds the net, which obviously hasn't happened yet, despite his stats.

    3. Speaking as someone who has flitted between mid-priced mids all season with dubious returns, I don't know why people are so keen to have two, sometimes three, of them in their starting 11. They are, by nature, inconsistent. Burnley defenders, for example, are cheaper and seemingly more solid and, again, you get more bang for you buck in defence.

    4. Unless Pep goes to three-at-the-back like he did at the start of the season, Jesus and Kun will be THE most-rotated City players this season but, apart from possibly Bernado Silva (who really didn't impress during his recent run), the mids are going to be paying at least 80% of the time each, which is fine. I know that neither of the teams here has a City forward, but sooooo many WCs I see here do, and it just seems like an exercise in self-inflicted frustration. Pick two mids and stick with them. Will save a lot of bother.

Sorry for the essay, peeps, I guess it felt like the right article to brain-fart in. Food for thought, etc. Good luck.

Good points. I've had some of the same thoughts, especially on number 2 where it's easy to overestimate good-looking fixtures.

Aguero and Jesus will be rotated but don't forget that Aguero has three more points thank Lukaku in 388 less minutes. Was injured for two matches and played 24 and 0 minutes when being benched. Maybe not the best captain option because of this (and some reduced value)

Point 1 - I completely agree. This to me is a mentality thing - people are always attracted to, and scared of missing, the big scores. If logic dictates, however, that there are better PPM among cheaper players over a reasonable period of time then those need to be given stronger consideration. At some point you can't think about pure value though, of you had the best value picks in the game, you'd only spend 80M or so. Then it's about how many big players you can stuff in as captaincy options or whatever. Which means I somewhat disagree with point 3, because by nature inconsistency does not necessarily mean bad, especially when you are spending very little.

Point 2 - yes and no, because you have the option of rotating players and also teams with smaller squads may be forced to rotate less. I think with good planning this is a bit of a non issue.

      Lots of good points here.

What would your WC look like if you were pulling the trigger right now?

2 big hitting strikers? I've gone Kane & Morata (prob switch to Lukaku) and Murray (may end up Niasse or DCL)

Midfield? I'm ignoring the Richarlison bandwagon at the moment as I've got Choupo. Gone Sane, Sterling and Salah as my big hitters with Carroll as steady eddy bench fodder (may switch to RLC)

Defence? I've gone 2 x Burnley to catch rises but am not 100% on this yet. Jones, Dann & Stones.

Had De Gea and Elliot since week one and see no reason to change.

      4. I don’t know what your point is regarding rotation of MC forwards. So what? We care about points not minutes played last time I checked. And last time I checked Kun has the MOST points for strikers. More than Kane (at a cheaper price) and more than Lukaku, who at 0.3 cheaper looks like a total waste of money in an offense that can’t score. I think you can make two informed decisions: Kane or Kun. Lukaku or Morata. I would not have 3 premium strikers because there is not enough value there in terms of squad balance.

      1. eder123

Captaincy i think is main issue with Man City forwards, never sure they will start or if they come on how much they will haul. I've had Jesus from GW1 and finally got rid last GW, of late been frustrating owning him. United locked up shop against the big guns, no reason why they can't have a go again with Pogba possibly back, Lukaku still a good option imo and easily downgradable to Morata if need be.

Interesting post, although I don't think point 1 is a true reflection of the realities of the fantasy game. I would agree that a direct comparison between the 6m defenders and their similarly priced midfield compatriots would show that the defenders are likely to score more points. However, we cannot play 7 defenders and 3 strikers, thus, the comparisons between players of different positions are never as direct as that. Instead of directly comparing Vertonghen to say Chuopo-Moting, a more realistic comparison would be to ask if one would rather have Vertonghen + Loftus-Cheek or Mee and Chuopo-Moting.

With the above logic in mind, if the goal is to maximise points, it is accepted generally accepted that big-hitting midfielders and strikers will head the points table come the end of the season (and provide the most reliable captaincy options). Should our priorities not be to squeeze in as many of those as possible, whilst maximising value with cheaper reliable options at the back such as the Burnley options you've mentioned?

It is much easier to find cheap defenders who will score well relative to higher priced defenders, than it is to perform the same exercise with attacking players. A look at the overall standings now is proof of the point.

      Sorry for the long post!

Oooh, I've gone green! How exciting.

Some interesting points above and, yes, how boring it woud be if the game was an exact science. I think, on reflection, I'm talking about an intended first-11, or the team structure. I'd rather play Azpi, Vertonghen, Jones, Otamendi and Mee than Ramsey, Choupo, Gross, Brady and RLC. So, yes, Vertonghen and RLC vs Choupo and Mee should be close come May but, in my first eleven, I'd definitely take Vertonghen over Choupo and, let us not forget, Jones is cheaper than both. I own both Mee and RLC, btw!

Regarding Kun - absolutely he's a great point-scorer but I guess my point about sticking to City assets applies to the strikers as well. Over Christmas, it's more than possible that he'll just rotate the two, which means that, every few days, we will be hearing the cries of those who have up to 11.8mil on the bench. For the sake of my mental health, I'd just urge people to remember that they all score well eventually so, for the love of Pep, just choose and hold!

Top-heavy teams still seems like bad risk-management to me, though.

Go get 'em, tigers. See you all in the top 50k come May!

Does point 1 not contradict with point 3?

You get more bang for your buck in defence with the cheapies so why not make the most of that and spend bigger elsewhere.

The "x defender will outscore similarly priced mid" argument only holds so much - you have to take into account the second player in the scenario.

Point 2 - there's loads of GWs before xmas - plenty of transfers. Obviously I don't want to spend loads of transfers on defenders all the time but how far do you plan with a wildcard? Things change, you can't account for everything

Point 4 - Sane definitely in my thinking

How many magic beans i have in excess??

I'm still not convinced by King. I think the funds from a cheaper 3rd striker can be better utilised elsewhere.

Thkx. But king and kola are my gutpicks and will do or die with them 😉
for me this wc is prepared after you solved the haz vs morata, and 2 or 3 big uptop. It changes everything from there

Stick with this team. It has a solid defense to keep you afloat most weeks and enough big hitters and differentials. If you change Kola Zaha King into Jones Sterling whomever, it then becomes template. Resist that temptation if you really fancy this.

I have now essentially solved the GW12 WC so I am going to discontinue my blog.

This has nothing to do my current rank of 1.26m....

I also have WC to play and seeing the common denominators between the two, the one thing that bothers me is Sterling. Managers are worried about rotation of MCY, but nobody mentions Fernandinho (5.2), who has played almost every game and in good form. Does anyone know what to do with that extra 3.0? You are not expecting a lot, but could be your best (b1). With the heavy hitters both teams have, you'll never captain Sterling anyway. With that extra, you could afford Mahrez, Firmino, Vardy, DDG, Azpili, Stones, Jones, Pogba, the list is never-ending.

    Been tinkering with my WC team for hours and hours now but i'm set on this draft atm;

    Pope / Elliot
Jones / Stones / Azpilicueta / Moreno / Hunemeier (Hunemeier is there for the upcoming price rise)
    Sterling / Sane / Salah / Richarlison / Carroll
    Lukaku / Niasse / Kane

I personally feel it's a balanced team in all areas. Only worry i have is with Niasse and the fact i'l end up with 0.0 ITB.

    Thoughts?

Debating very similar things myself. Most of my drafts so far have included a big three up front, but I'm coming around to the idea that a spread of funds is optimal.

The main positives of a big three up front is flexibility, you're 2 moves away from any player in the game. Much harder to try to build back up to a big 3 if you go Niasse than it is to downgrade one of them when a clear alternative becomes availability.

The downside of the big three up front is imbalance. Means missing out on a Chelsea defender, missing out on a 2nd city asset (which is significant given their all top point scorers in their own right) etc.

My own dilemma is whether or not to include Lukaku or not, instead of yours with Aguero. That's causing me problems.

But given your two options above, I would personally go B, because I see the City strikers as the most likely to be rotated in the City team, and I just think 11.8 or so for Aguero is
a difficult to justify outlay ahead of this fixture pile-up.

Thanks for your feedback. I tend to agree. I've made a nice little profit from Kun so I might have to say good bye and looks at locking in Azpi and Vertonghen and bring in Sane for a City midfield double up. It does make sense.

Thoughts on my wildcard team(0.1 ITB)
    Elliot,Pope
    Jones,Stones,Daniels.Mee,Dunk
    Mane,Silva,Eriksen,Richarlison,Caroll
    Kane,Aguero,Abraham

    Can also do Stones+Eriken+Aguero+Caroll to Lukaku+(4.4 mid)+Azpi+Sane

Thanks for all the comments! I'll try and get in over the weekend to respond to some of them.

Some points I agree with, others I don't, I particularly want to address Bigbarn's post 🙂

Due to this season being different and playing my wildcard later than normal.
First time ever im looking to build a squad with elite goalkeeper and defender and not going heavy with three big hitters up front.
Aim to have a strong bench that will help out me, rather than cheap bench fodder. Going to be busy xmas fixtures, need regular starters. My formula likely to be 1x Elite Goalkeeper & defender, Jones & 4.5 regulars, 2x elite midfielders 1x 4.5, rest mid price. Up front 2 heavy hotters & Tammy.
