Scout Notes – Gameweek 12 – Sunday

Richarlison ends his Vicarage Road goal drought as Will Hughes catches the eye against West Ham. Elsewhere, the heroics of Heurelho Gomes helps the Hornets to a rare clean sheet as David Moyes’ tenure at West Ham begins with defeat.

Richarlison ends home drought

Such a reliable source of goals and Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points on his travels, Richarlison finally found the net at home after failing to produce a single effort on target in his previous five at Vicarage Road.

Owned by 18%, the young Brazilian’s home output was of particular concern bearing in mind that his next two visitors are Manchester United and Spurs in Gameweek 14-15.

Yet Sunday’s strike maintained a remarkable run of consistency – he’s now delivered attacking points in six of the last seven Gameweeks ahead of next weekend’s trip to Newcastle United.

Heightening his appeal for that Magpies clash is that, away from home, Richarlison has averaged 7.2 points per match and is the league’s top player for shots inside the opposition box (20).

On the downside, he also has a testing trip to Burnley directly after those United and Spurs matches. But the case for holding is very convincing, with the fixtures turning in his favour from Gameweek 17 once again.

At a price of 6.5, Richarlison is now the top FPL midfielder for value in terms of points per million and sits fifth in the midfield standings on 66 points.

Despite that, his inability to claim bonus points continues to dent the South American’s captaincy potential. He has scored or assisted in eight of the first 12 Gameweeks but has earned bonus points on just two occasions.

Today’s BPS haul was limited by two shots off target and two fouls conceded, while he was also tackled twice.

Hughes impresses in tactical tweak

Handed a central support role alongside Richarlison as Marco Silva moved to 3-4-2-1 against the Hammers, Will Hughes overshadowed his more popular team-mate thanks to a goal, assist and maximum bonus.

But Watford’s form on the road suggests that Silva could revert to his usual 4-2-3-1 at St James’ Park – only Man City (16) and Chelsea (14) have scored more away goals than the Hornets’ 12.

Regardless of formation, Hughes (4.6) now looks likely to be on the teamsheet for the trip to Tyneside after months on the periphery.

Handed just 10 minutes in the opening 10 Gameweeks, Hughes has now started both of Watford’s last two. However, Roberto Pereyra made a return to the bench and replaced the former Derby County man late on; he will doubtless threaten Hughes’ start in weeks to come.

Andre Gray was again a starter up front as Troy Deeney served the second match in a three-match suspension. Gray’s scuffed assist for Hughes’ opener was his second in as many matches.

Gomes keeps it clean

Silva can thank Heurelho Gomes for their first clean sheet in eight attempts after he denied Cheick Kouyate and Marko Arnautovic with superb stops.

Indeed, David Moyes can at least take encouragement from the fact that his side had three big chances today – they had managed just six in their previous six road trips under Slaven Bilic.

For the hosts, the decision to bench Jose Holebas came as a surprise as Marvin Zeegelaar (4.4) earned his first outing of the season at left wing-back. Holebas had played every minute of the previous 10 matches he had been available for, only missing the Gameweek 3 encounter against Brighton due to suspension.

Ranked top for crosses (82) and successful crosses (17) among defenders, Holebas is second only to Ben Davies for key passes (15 to 22) at the back.

Watford’s primary corner taker over the first 11 (he had taken 33 of their first 50), Holebas’ absence saw Hughes also claim dead-ball duties, taking all three of Watford’s corners.

Zeegelaar impressed on his first start, picking up two bonus points on his debut having won three tackles. Kiko Femenía – our preferred option among Silva’s defence – picked up a single bonus point but hobbled off late on with a knock.

Elsewhere, Adrian Mariappa – a 4.0 option in FPL – also earned a notable recall in Silva’s three-man defence having been dropped for the previous two outings.

However, like Hughes, Mariappa will surely have strong competition for his starting role with Sebastian Prödl returning from injury to figure on the bench on Sunday. Younes Kaboul is also on the road to recovery, with Silva likely to go into the busy Christmas period with the option to rotate his centre-backs.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Thoughts please fellas....

    Ederson

Is it worth a -4 to get Alonso in?

I think TAA started because Matip was injured. Klopp didn't want to use all of the rest of his CB's (Gomez, Lovren, Klavan) in the same bench with no cover.

Not great. Backed out of Salah (C) to go with Kane (C). And didn't do Aguero to Lukaku. Lucky enough, some defensive points has saved face and not a huge red. Dunk/Choupo points today and I may squeeze a green so I'll take it. It's been a week of what could have been.

Wildcard has been okay. Looked at Wilson which would have funded Sane and Alonso but didn't...

Not the end of the world, easy to have hindsight after a wildcard, especially when you've eyed up just about every move.

Otherwise I've started well with the wildcard, got myself 14.5 starters (Sterling) and changed up my defence/GKs as well as front lines.

Was gonna go Wilson but was put off by certain people mentioning possible rotation with Defoe and Afobe ! 😉 Still my wc went well (despite captain Kane fail ) and smashed into top 100k so pretty chuffed

Well rotation is still there! But Wilson has to be first choice for the majority now...surely!

75pts on my wildcard and a nicely balanced squad for the fixture congestion ahead - as demonstrated by the 23pts I left on the bench.

Very nice scoring that! Must have had a good captain?

Salah is so consistent! Hoping for an assist at least against Chelsea then the points can resume as normal after that

    Morning All,

Hope you all have had a good gameweek so far. Been an awfully frustrating one for me having moved the armband from Hazard to Kane in the hour before the lunchtime kickoff. Final score: 64

Feedback appreciated with the rut I find myself in. Thought I was being intelligent bringing Bailly in for Davies as Jones was injured and no mention of any injury to Bailly my Jose - that worked (NOT).

I know my team right now is extremely top heavy, midfield light but I do not want to take hits to amend that right now.

With that in mind, do you think it's okay to hold my transfer this week in the event Bailly is passed fit for the weekend game?

    Team:

    Forster
    Walker - Daniels - Trippier - Bailly - Maguire
    Sane - Hazard
    Kane - Morata - Vardy

Bench: Elliot - Surman - Carroll - Carrick

I wouldn't call that top heavy, back heavy. I think Baily worth holding. Whatever love you make I'd wait to have 2 FT so you can downgrade one of the defenders and upgrade a mid probably starting with Carrick ? Unless you plan on still playing 5-2-3

No, no intention of continue with a 5-2-3 been trying to get out off it but this gw i needed to sort out my defence so my 2FT were Cedric+Davies >> Daniels+Bailly

I think unless he's announced injured I'll keep Bailly and then use 2FT next week to sort it out, alongside a 4pt hit if needed perhaps..

        Thanks

Ye sounds good. I'd be looking at the likes of Moreno, burnley defence, 4.5s that fit best for you. You may need 2 downgrades to afford to upgrade any of your mids to the ones you probably want

The Stones injury is the most frustrating thing for a while. Cost me 5+ points, and now I either have to rely on Dunk (Mun), or Ward (ARS) next week, or shift Stones and block myself off of any other transfers

Worth moving Stones on with an FT, or wait to see if Sterling plays CL and shift him for Pog?

I'd play Ward personally, Burnley are resilient at home and it would be just like Arsenal to beat Spurs and then go and mess it up at Burnley.

True, can afford Stones to drop 0.1 anyway.

Sterling to Pogba just feels more exciting than Stones to Yedlin

Stones is relatively a long term injury (FPL wise) so I would be getting rid. Although I would play Ward at home to Arsenal too. Even if Sterling comes off the bench vs Huddersfield, you can expect him to return some points.

      Perhaps deal with Stones instead.

True, I also have a lot of value tied up in my backline so Stones to Yedlin or Mustafi/Smalling would free up a bit of cash

Mohamed Salah has scored 1 more goal than Harry Kane despite taking 22 fewer shots. One of them is seen as a poor finisher.

Why are people taking hits all the time?
4 points is a goal. 4 points is tens of thousand ranks.
I do understand if u need to do it wen players get injured.
But why are u taking hits when not needed cause one player had a couple of blanks?

When you have a poor rank in particular it is seen as worth the gamble to climb the rankings.

But while their can be rewards there is a far greater chance of it failing.

I did it alot last season when my rank was awful...it can get moreish too...but ultimately most top managers keep hits to a minimum.

You have to decide whether to stick or twist - it's a gamble either way.

This week I took -12 in hits but the players I brought in scored 20 points more than the ones I dropped.

Makes the game more interesting for me. This week I took a hit for Forster/Kun > Pope/Lukaku(C). Would have capped Kane otherwise so that’s a 10 point profit.

I’ve also had some poor ones like selling Kane for a hit before Everton but at the end of the season it will probably even up both ways. For me it’s just the psychological effect that a 77(-8) is better than a 69.

Ofc some hits was worth it afterwards. But often it was a mistake. The player u swap out might score evenly with the one u took a hit for over a longer period. I try not to take any hits if possible. Had to take 2 or 3 this season to swap injured players out tho. Before the kick off I want to do so many transfers, take hits and get the on paper best team, but I don't do that. I keep players for a longer time period and try to get players I can have for a long time. I also don't do early transfers when mid week games comming up. That hurts the squad value, but save points.

It works well this season. If I had put the captain on the right players more often I would even be up there fightng with the top 1k guys.

Basically to bring in Hazard next week I need to downgrade Bailly. Would it be worth doing that this week so I can get Mee (assuming he will price rise this week) or get the likely Bailly clean sheet points (if he's fit) and then get Lowton next week?

Have a look at this - filter by away from home and then look at goal attempts, chances and shots in the box columns.

Naughton can be on the bench for next week though
