Captain Sensible – Gameweek 17

With just a few hours remaining until this evening’s 6.45pm deadline, it’s time for our pre-Gameweek members’ article as we analyse the armband conundrum for the upcoming round of fixtures.

We get underway by assessing the main players in this week’s Captain Poll, then turn to the Opta numbers and check up on the Rate My Team ratings before considering a couple of differential options in light of the data analysis.

The Captain Poll

After serving up a second double-figure haul in his last four at Wembley, faith in Harry Kane’s captaincy potential is on the rise once again.

With Spurs set to entertain Brighton on Wednesday night, their top scorer – who has been the number one armband pick in Fantasy Premier League in each of the last two Gameweeks – leads the way with over 49% of the votes cast in our Gameweek 17 Captain Poll.

His team-mate Son Heung-min delivered the top score of Gameweek 16, bettering Kane by 16 points to 12 after supplying a goal and two assists in the 5-1 hammering of Stoke.

Subject to more transfers in (76,000) than any midfielder in the Gameweek, the South Korean international has started each of his side’s last seven home matches but is backed by just 1% here.

A home clash with West Brom ensures that Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (16%) is regarded as Kane’s closest contender.

The Egyptian’s opener at home to Everton was the eighth Gameweek in succession that he’s provided a goal or assist. Salah also claimed maximum bonus against the Toffees to return 11 points – his seventh double-figure haul of 2017/18.

After being used from the bench on Sunday, Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino seem set to be unleashed from the start against a Baggies defence with a single shut-out on the road all season.

Selected by just 5%, Coutinho is shaping up as an explosive differential – he’s delivered double-digits in four of his eight league starts and netted a Champions League treble against Spartak Moscow last week.

Firmino, meanwhile, has persuaded only 2% backers, yet has produced five goals and two assists in his last four starts across all competitions.

Chelsea’s Eden Hazard claims third spot with 6%, despite an underwhelming display at West Ham on Saturday. The Belgian’s form on the road has been nonetheless impressive, with 39 FPL points over his last four away appearances.

Rested for the weekend derby win over Man United, Sergio Aguero (4%) is regarded as the stand-out Man City option ahead of tomorrow’s trip to struggling Swansea.

The Argentine netted twice in the corresponding fixture in 2016/17 and is favourite to lead the line at the Liberty Stadium, having started three of the previous four Gameweeks.

Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez will also be hoping to echo their output from last season.

Having scored just one goal in the last nine Gameweeks, the Man United frontman earns just 2% of the votes ahead of a visit from Bournemouth. Yet Lukaku netted four times at home to the Cherries while playing for Everton last season.

Meanwhile, Sanchez makes his way to West Ham, where he racked up three goals and an assist in the previous campaign. Unlike Lukaku, he boasts productive form for this one, with a goal or assist in four of the last five Gameweeks.

Four goals in three starts under Mauricio Pellegrino has earned Charlie Austin over 104,000 transfers in since the weekend. Up next, he entertains a Leicester City side with a single clean sheet on their travels.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

A), but I think Gomez might be benched by Klopp, so the decision will be taken out of your hands.

What are people doing with Burnley defenders after Stoke? Fixtures get a bit difficult, I can't see many clean sheets from between GW18-27

For the price they're always worth it as a squad player since they can grind out a cs at home.

I'd be weary of doubling with Pope/Burnley defender though

They face Brighton away after Stoke. After that gonna cash in on Ward and get Masuako for the double dgw and upgrade Elliot to Adrian with the dgw in mind also.

I'll definitely be cashing in on Ward but I still think there is value in the Burnley defence,. They've been very strong at home and only conceded 1 at Anfield, Wembley and at home to Arsenal. What's the alternative though? Watford, West Ham & Everton defenders? Their fixtures are good but how reliable will their options be?

Chances of Big Andy Carroll starting against Arsenal?

I'm tempted to sell Kane next week to Big Andy in preparation for the double. He's cheap enough to be benched during the blank.

Would allow me to upgrade RLC to Sanchez (or any mid), and then sell him and Firmino to get Kane back for the double.

Seems like a grand plan, but it's not that complicated, and it's reasonably flexible too, since I could buy and sell other players instead of Sanchez.

The biggest worry is actually whether Andy will be alive and kicking on the 2nd and 4th of January.

There's quite a bit of chatter on Man Utd forums about Lukaku being rested/taken out of the spotlight vs. Bournemouth. No evidence of this of course, just people supposing and assuming. What's the feeling on here? Ibra to start instead?

I'm weighing up Morata to Lukaku for a -4 but that's only worth doing if he's going to start this week. Otherwise I can just play RLC. But if he his going to play, he's surely a better option than Firminho and worth a -4.

    1. Clintymints

Ibra is only capable of playing 15-25 minutes, so if Lukaku is rested Rashford will probably start as a striker, but don't think Lukaku will be benched.

Ibra is probably ready to start now and Kaku could definetly use a rest. He's played 90mins in every league and Champs league game this season bar one game think he got subbed on 70mins. Wouldn't be one bit surprised to see him benched

With Morata out, I think now might be a good time to finally get Hazard. There's a consistency to Morata, but he doesn't tend to hit double figures.

    So, two thoughts:

    A) Morata, Gross & Azpi ---> Austin, Hazard & Christensen (-4)

    B) Morata & Gross ----> DCL & Hazard

    What do you think?

I can bench Morata if Mee plays and go 4-4-2 with Diouf as sub but I’m not sure Davies will play either which could leave me short...

Having brought Morata in for Firmino and sold Silva for Coutinho I might reverse this and get DCL in then Silva back for RLC in a rotating 3-5-2. I’m just not convinced on Morata and don’t feel that confident owning him. Not having Silva and therefore my double City mids worries me! Still have wildcard to fall back on too!

    Foster
    Davies Otamendi Kolasanic
    Salah Coutinho Sterling Gross RLC
    MORATA Kane(c)

    Myhill Diouf Mee Suttner

Davies probably won't play. Sterling could be rested. Morata is out. Mee is a doubt.

Yes I have to do something with Morata at least. I think I’ll go DLC and reassess on Friday.

If anything like my cheeks, I wouldn't expect much of a performance.
      Take the shit.

I am in the same position. If it's just for one week I would gamble on RLC.

If he's going to miss more than one game, though, now will be the time to transfer him out.

That's the thing...I don't...otherwise I would have made my decision.

          It's a gamble either way 🙁

Only "safe" choice is to just forget Morata and get someone else long-term.

i guess its safer just t put firmino in.but I really dont like -4

I don't fancy Firmino long-term. He's a rotation risk and has long dry patches.

I also don't want to spend 2 transfers and a hit just to do Morata->Firmino->Morata.

I might still do it, though...if Morata is out long-term, I am screwed.

There's no reason to conclude he's out next gw.

Who is injured and comes back after 4days?I thought Mee would, but not,I thought Mustafi would but not.

It always takes longer,or he will slowly be introduced to minutes..
