Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Chelsea Impress in Defeat

Chelsea are knocked out of the Champions League, as expected, but their performance in Barcelona is a reminder that their key players still have much to give as the season nears its completion.

The 3-0 scoreline flattered Barca as individual errors – in particular from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois – scuppered an otherwise excellent team showing by the Blues, who out-shot their opponents 14-8.

Coach Antonio Conte made two changes from the side that beat Crystal Palace at the weekend, with Antonio Rudiger and Victor Moses replacing Gary Cahill and Davide Zappacosta.

That meant a second straight start up front for Olivier Giroud at the expense of Alvaro Morata, who only replaced him after 67 minutes last night, which in turn could be a significant development if the 1.5%-owned Frenchman retains his place for Chelsea’s domestic run-in.

Giroud’s inclusion has brought a genuine balance to the attack, freeing up Eden Hazard and, in particular, Willian.

The Brazilian was again excellent at the Nou Camp, firing in two shots and causing the home defence all manner of issues with his direct running.

Hazard was more subdued, but still managed three attempts and produced two key passes as Chelsea offered a consistent threat throughout the match despite going a goal down in just the third minute.

The most likely Chelsea player to score on the night, however, was Marcos Alonso.

The wing-back hit the post with a free-kick, one of a match-high four shots he had in an eye-catching attacking performance.

Blues defenders have been consistently sold by Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers during a six-Gameweek spell in which they’ve kept just one clean sheet.

Alonso has been no exception – he’s lost around 400,000 owners in that time frame – but his offensive threat remains undeniable, and it would be a surprise if he is not part of many Wildcard plans despite his budget-busting 7.2 price tag.

Short-term, there is little Fantasy interest in any of Conte’s players, however.

They have a blank Gameweek 31 as they’ll face Leicester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals and follow that up with a huge home match against Spurs once the international break is done.

After that, though, their assets should return to our radars.

If Chelsea get past the Foxes and into the cup semi-finals, they’ll have two double Gameweeks to come.

The first, likely to be in Gameweek 34, would involve trips to Southampton and Burnley, while the second would probably feature home matches with Liverpool and Huddersfield in Gameweek 37.

Fixtures at home to West Ham and away at Swansea City and Newcastle round out their generally attractive league schedule.

On paper, Chelsea’s form – they’ve lost three of their last four matches in all competitions – doesn’t warrant investment in their players.

But the defeats came against both Manchester sides and Barca, all away from home, and last night’s performance was as positive a showing as a 3-0 defeat can be.

The defence remains a concern and Hazard’s 10.6 price means he can’t afford too many more off days – he’s served up consecutive blanks in the league – if he is to find a way into our Wildcard midfields.

Willian (7.0), however, offers value and fine form, while Alonso has the potential to deliver returns at both ends of the pitch – since returning from a two-match absence in Gameweek 28, only the Brazilian and Giroud have fired in more attempts than the wing-back’s six.

And if he continues to be handed starts by Conte, Giroud could be an interesting differential option up front, particularly as Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero are currently injured, and the latter is likely to be a rotation risk when Man City finally wrap up the league title and can concentrate fully on their Champions League ambitions.

Used my FH earlier in the season and kicking myself now.

Got 4 players playing so far and 2 FT.

    Current

    Daniels VVD
    Salah Mili

    Which one do u choose?

    1. Baines, Stan, King, Firm (-8)
    2. Baines, Stan, Firm (-4)
    3. Stan, Firm (no hit)

Would be -4, no? That's a tough one (having a similar issue after bringing in King and now thinking about Stan/Zaha for a hit)

So you only have 8 players with an 8 pt hit? Wow. I have 11 players for a 4 pt hit playing 3-4-3. Not sure why you didn’t plan more for this gw. I know most of the teams are rubbish but still.

Becuase you would have carried a bunch of awful players at dreadful teams (Liverpool aside) through the last four or five weeks. When most people will be getting 8/9 out at best I would imagine.

For example, I could have got Wilson in two weeks ago with this week in mind. I went for Auba who has returned 18 points in those two weeks. Is Wilson going to score enough this week to cancel that out?

I would definitely get Stan and Firmino in, are you wildcarding next week or no? If yes then I'd be tempted by a -4 or -8 for sure. A Bournemouth striker would be first pick for a hit.

    A) B) or C) Managers?

    7 players so far (for -4) :

    VVD
    Stanislas Shaq Salah
    Firmino Wilson Mounie

    A) Save - 7players are enough

    B) + Vert to Baines (-8) 8 players

    C) + Obiang to Zaha/ Walcott (-12)
    9 players

I'd only do one more hit. Think -8 is fine if the right player, I'd be tempted by Zaha for the punt - Baines is a good move but think -12 is pushing it, especially if only going there for a defender.

Currently in for eight players at teams with GW31:

    Lossl
    Robertson Francis
    Walcott* Salah(c) McArthur
    King Firmino

Any value in getting rid of Rambo before WC on Saturday afternoon? If so,

    A) Zaha
    B) Stanislas (reckon it would be the first time I've maxed out on Bournemouth!)

What if you do a transfer early doors, taking price rises in your newly selected player. Then at the last moment you free hit. Do you lose the price rises? Do you alsp take the price drops of the player you sold?

Saturday. I’ve got three draft WC teams and they are all within 0.2 of budget. FPL statistics will be bent out of shape next week due to a deluge of wildcards so impossible to track price changes. Too marginal for the players I want.

Guys, have 6 GW31 players and not FH.

Looking at hits in BGW net pts if they all get 2 pts

    1 transfer +2pts
    2 transfers 0 pts
    3 transfers -2 pts
    4 transfers -4 pts

So if I go for 4 transfers (-12 pts) I need one of the four players I get to return (CS,assist, goals).

The advantage in going 4 transfers is to widen the pool of potential returns.

So that being said is a -12 too much for BGW31 (Looking at Mane/Baines/Stan/Zaha).

Depends on what set up you want go with. These are the 5 strikers I’m considering for wildcard.

      Auba
      Kaku
      Firmino
      Vardy
      Murray

Will get 3 of them. Auba looks a certain.

He's got a lovely next couple of games, then can always move for the double. I'm wildcarding this Saturday, and will probably keep for 32 and 33. Auba certain to be in mine, think Firm will go to Lukaku for the DGW. The other striker will be cheapie as maxing out midfielders.

I fancy Everton to beat Stoke (even though away form says otherwise) and exciting to have someone a bit different in this week. Mounie and King the other ones I considered.

Bournemouth most attacking team (other than Liverpool) and against the worst team in the league 😀

No gambles allowed. You must follow the crowd.

Has anyone got an actual real differential this week or does everyone just have the usual suspects.

Yeah I think so. Anyone that hasn't been mentioned on here ad nauseam is considered one.

PVA and Zaha are couple good ones. Dont think many will go for them (non FH teams). Rondon could do well

      -Choupo, Butland maybe

Surprised King looks so much more of a better option than Wilson in the comparison stats over the last 4 GWs.
I think that decides it for me.

Yes devastated! He has it in him no doubt.
Like I say just surprised how much the stats veer to King.

Don't worry about def focus on mid and upfront.
